- Recently I have discussed the numerous potential benefits of regular cold exposure. I have shown you how to start taking a cold shower every day. For those of you more daring people wanting to experience the benefits of cold exposure, I have shown you whole body cryotherapy, spending up to three minutes in a tank exposure to very cold air.

In this video, I show you another method of regular cold exposure you can try at home. It is one suggested by Wim Hof, better known as the “Ice Man.” I show you my first experience putting my hands in a bucket of ice water for two minutes and offer my thoughts on how you could use this and other cold treatments in an effort to improve your health.
Always talk to your doctor before trying this or any health treatment. If you are interested in cold exposure, try it and see how it works for you.

Is it possible to get frostbite form leaving a hand or something in a ice bucket for to long?
Dip your face at 20 sec intervals
Should really do Wim Hof breathing first if you don't want it to be such a painful experience, lol. It releases adrenaline and dulls the pain.
One of the secrets of the Hollywood stars is to immerse their face in ice-water, and then use petroleum jelly on their skin!
Are you aware of "cooling gloves" for "workouts"? It is supposedly more efficient than steroids in repairing muscle, The gloves create a "vacuum" so the blood vessels stay at the "surface" of your hands making the cooling much more effective. You should look into it...
I had to laugh, because you reacted to this the exact way I did; it almost makes me feel nauseous, and two minutes is an eternity...I have Raynaud's syndrome, and I am doing the Wim Hof method everyday. Doing this once a day for a week now, it has improved the cold issues with my left hand, but the right is still more susceptible to the Raynaud's effect, i.e. fingers turning bone white, and being uncomfortable. I suggest everyone give it a try, and breathe deeply when you do it. It's another way to challenge your body to adapt!
4 months on, just wondering how did this go for you?
Great video!! thanks for sharing.
I love open water swimming here in NC..I am now continuing into the winter months for the first time and am in 47 degrees for an hour each time I go...I can tell you that my mood is better..feel very energized the rest of the day once I get out.
Where in NC are you I would love to try
Im going to try this lol 😆 I already been doing cold showers for 2 monthes love them so much 💓
@@GVH1305 i started maybe three weeks ago and since last week i went back to starting warm and finish cold. starting cold showers with cold water it's more challenging but i think ice bath is easier
Yep, done this one many TIMES< however I am revisiting it now with your video because I have arthritis from diet that formed in my left hand...so I will now be able to use this for one of it's intended purposes. I have done hands and feet at same time also....yet often it's just easy to do one or the other...
Here is an interesting fact...when I used to do it with the three sets of breathing what would happen would be that the ice would feel like steam/electricity alternatively...and that was just like really cool, it's one of the more neat things about this, how your body can't tell the different between hot/cold when you do this with the breathing after a few sets, and the feeling is really hard to describe.
Did you do the breathing before putting your hands in ice water or during? Also, did you do the whole 30 breaths, hold on the exhale as long as you can, inhale and hold for 15? Or just deep breathing? Thanks.
Second one to like, second one to comment. NICE! I've been watching your videos couple of times.
Managed 3 minutes tonight with my hands constantly swirling and they were numb by the end but it felt good enduring the pain and being at ease.
I did this and I took it out at five minutes because I was bored. Within two minutes the water became nice. No lie I’m a bit freaked out
Your hands should be numb buds...or get some more ice...it SHOULD hurt initially...then as the blood restricts, the pain should fade...
Was there still ice in the water? After I was swimming in close to 0 degrees for like 30m I couldnt take my car key out of my pocket. My friend had to help. But I have naturally very cold hands. (I mean really fucking cold, whenever someone complains about cold hands I let them touch mine. The good thing is that I have never felt a cold hand lol.)
Add salt. Salt will drop the freezing point and decrease the temperature. You can do the same with ice chests if you want really cold beer or drinks.
@@LockenJohny101how is your hand now?
@@user-td3sl7wj9v Its fine, my comment was 2 years ago. Since then I was constantly adapting to the cold. Now I can still be comfy at 15 degrees with shorts and shirt. 10 is ok and 5 is cold but not freezing. With a backpack even colder temperatures are possible with just shorts and shirt. My hands have improved drastically, 3 years ago I couldt go without thick gloves for 20 Minutes even at temperatures below 5°C, I could barely move my hands and would need to warm then up for 10-15 minutes water when coming home. My hands are still rather cold, but I dont have any problems that are worth mentioning. Simply by wearing less clothing and NO GLOVES other then extreme conditions like cycling at -5°C(That was a year ago, I expect improvement here aswell, I think I could do that now). I would still wear only shorts and shirt, but that is only possible because moving creates heat.
Same goes for shoes, I only wear shoes if broken glass can be expected or more then 4km of rocky ground (or social reasons). Even -10°C is bearable bare foot, snow too, but dont get your feet wet at such temperatures.
I work in fisheries off the coast of Greenland. My hands are in freezing saltwater 5-6hrs a day...this is good therapy. However, there are many, many nerve endings in the fingers and hands. It makes sense that they would be one of the most difficult parts of the body to train for cold exposure. In fact, I find full body in ice exposure to be much easier! (Try putting your elbow in the water after your hands have been in and see for yourself -that its much simpler...)
That is a hell of a tough job I salute you for doing it.
How long do you take ice baths for if you don't mind me asking? Thanks.
Put hands in ice water for 2 mins.
It’ll be painful.
Do it daily.
It will improve.
After some time, it feels warm.
It hurts so much , the feet was easier
I did the hand ice plunge, yesterday. OMG. I was not able to go the full two minutes BUT, I did not do the breathing. Will do, today. Ask for a couple times a day. No way. I will do it once a day until I can do this.
I always wondered if you did just your hands in cold water and then switched to full body... what would the affects be?
Thanks
I just started doing this for my raynauds (cold hands) & it seems counterintuitive; my hands will get warm about 10-15 minutes AFTER I soak for 1-2 mins. It's been really helpful!!!! Starting to end showers with cool-cold water for 15-30 seconds!
I have raynauds too. This is interesting
I agree wholeheartedly! The showers if expanded in time, seem to help as well. Good luck and keep trying.
Any updates if it helps raynauds
@@tylermoth9837 it does help to warm up the hands...also added ashwagandha, selenium and b vitamins this past winter. It did help with the severity of reynauds attacks.
@@hollyphelps5755 when do you do it exactly
Hello! It can be helpful for boxers who want to prevent hands pain and arthritis?
Would this help with the muscle pain in my back. It's there for 2 years now. When it just happened I use warm water. I understand that I should have use ice when it just happened. Now I can hardly exercise just pain.
Could this help for cubital tunnel syndrom symptoms?
I am just guessing here, but since cold is a vasoconstrictor, wouldn’t they turn red AFTER taking them out because the warmth increase causes vasodilation?
would this be good for preventing carpal tunnel?
My experience with right hand in ice water was that after around 2:30 min, my LEFT hand got hot and I felt (because of the berathing) ants in the left hand and also in the right hand. That was when the pain got much less and it was okay. With my left hand I was not so successfull at first. I also tried with my feet and there the left foot was better than the right one...
I usually soak in a hot bath but with advanced arthritis I find more relief in alternating temperatures because the heat soothes but cold reduces swelling.
Lately I'm cold all the time, even taking levothyroxine. Thyroid level was so low that honest, I was hospitalized in both Fort Worth and Anaheim, CA for bradycardia.
Anyone have hints to increase my metabolism at age 72. Just started cycling again.
I discovered this today washing the dishes then I watched this vid to see if my theory is true
In order to feel the heat in the water, you most do the breathing method. When you are holding the breathing fucus on making your heart nit slower, and bloodflow.
You don't have to focus. It is a mechanical process and happens whether you want it to or not. It's not a magical affirmation manifesting woo woo metaphysical goulash thing. All you have to do is not take your hands out until it stops hurting.
@@finstereric1695 its all about breathing
Don't know. But right now I could do that. It's so hot. Plus without air unit not working well.
I used to blow my ankle out two times a year skateboarding and I would have 5 gallon buckets filled up to my knee. Now that shit hurt.
Can I do this if I have morton's neuroma on my feet ??
Has anyone got a study was done to check health levels and life longevity of people living in a warm climate (say QLD Australia, California, Florida) vs cold climate (say Sweden, Siberia, ...)
Also, I have a feeling that cold is great for the vascular system but there may be a threshold for nerves so as not to damage?
I lived in qld and alot of fat ppl amd down in vic much less
Dr..... I am unable to bend my knee as before I used to.... It's paining... I can walk, run... But unable to squat, kneel down and bend with my left knee....does it requires surgery? Will it heal on its own... Or it's a serious one?
Try Moringa it’s helps a lot
Iam doing like that ,lot of change in body ,I feel better good chemistry
my hands swell a lot so im gonna try it maybe it Will work for them ?
What will happen if you expose hand in a cold water for a couple of minutes within a week (like every night) Thank you
Is there a side effects?
Your skin is glowing so much...... Plzzzz tell me your skin care routine 🥺
Sweat
Cold showers
Make up
Also Ice
Precum
I put some salt into the water. That way it wont freeze asfast but becomr even colder.
Hi I'm watching this video because my hands are warm but one of them are cold and I'm kind of scared do you think you could do a video of that I don't know what it is and I'm kind of scared but it's going to happen😢
Hey! Would you recommend this after rock climbing? Hands end up destroyed after a session and was thinking if this could be a good way to help the recovery!
I’m sorry, but I can’t legally answer medical questions and offer medical advice online. I have created thousands of articles and videos that discuss almost any musculoskeletal injury that should help you.
I would consider if any sport is worth wrecking one if the most valuable tools God gives us.
But I'm a professional violinist and protect my hands with gloves 24/7.
You might live longer if you took up another exciting sport!
Hiking in the Sierra Club we were sober every time we passed a place where a rock climber lost his/her life. You've proven you can do some very difficult thing, why not go hand gliding for a while?
I did and it was soooo fun!
Or try to accomplish one thing in each sport!
Well done!!💯
I couldn't stand the pain with my hands it hurt so much pain going up my arm but I did my feet for 2 minutes why is that ?
Can you get arthritis by doing this?
Has anyone tried this for de Quarvains tenosynovitis?
Can I do just my feet?
Hey, I was watching an old video where you talked about bio dissolvable screws a few years ago and i replied but i dont think you would have read dude to how long ago that was so im sending it here. Basically I had an articular cartilage lesion in my kneee and had surgery. My doctor said he put small disolving darts in my knee to stimulate blood or something. Is this what he was talking about? Or was he talking about a micro fracture in my cartilage
If you know you have Raynaud’s, peripheral neuropathy or peripheral vascular disease I would talk to your doctor before trying this and be very, very cautious.
Hello, i am here for a little advice. So i am 14, do a lot of sports, nearly every day. I have light knee cracking and rarely popping in my knees, especially when i stand up from the squat position. It does not hurt. It is mostly in my right knee. I cant remember any injuries whatsoever. Should i be concerned?
Better to see a specialist than having any injuries bro
Dude same my knees pop or crack when I stand up or something
you could look up kneesovertoesguy, but just cracking isnt enough to have knees beyond repair.
You might need an arthroscopic procedure.
The time I'm familiar with is 8 minutes, or until the pain subsides. Tonight, I did 39f. 8 minutes for hands. Last night was 34f 8 minutes for feet. Hands hurt more.
yeah, hands almost always hurt more...yet those feet can get pretty close after a good amount of time...feels like your bones get all brittle and you gotta walk like an elderly person for a few mins for sure...
I just tried for first time couldn't do the hands
Is it not bad to stay your hand in a cold water for a long period of time?
omg i did this for the first time today, sooooo painful i couldn't hold for 2 min only 1 min, it was like needles on my hand, but i will repeat it every day to see how it works, it's horrible have cold hands and feet every day (Raynaud's syndrome), good luck to everyone trying this!
SAME. It hurts SO bad I could barely make 30 seconds.
@@hjbaby7653 It hurts for us all but you have to let go and endure.
If you can make it over 60 seconds it does get easier.
I meditate prior upon doing it which makes the process a bit more bearable. Following your breath and submitting to what you're doing.
This is what i had to do. I had to dip 2 times and on the 3rd i was able to tough it out and breath it out to make it to 6 or more minutes i did not time it. I took a short 45 second video after i was able to talk and not twist around all over then sent some text to my wife. I noticed as long as i was able to lazer focus on something else i was able to keep my foot in longer. (Never at any point felt good)
I take full body ice baths for 15mins at a time, I love it so much.
Wow amazing
Holy grail. How to start? I ice my arms regularly because of occupational overuse and stress and it’s so painful every time ..I do it for about 10mins entire arms Ice water bucket. would love to do whole body but how would you even start ?

Anybody tried doing this over a period of time with better circulation in feet and hans? I have problems with cold feet and hands being outside in winter, and I'd like to fix it. Just tried this now, but don't know if I bother do it if I'm not sure it works. How many times must it typically be done for hands and feet to adopt?
Im going to thelake with some freinds going to go into to ankles its freezing here its winter time here lol 😆 I love my cold showers
I only tried it once and my hand started to get really warm a couple of minutes after I pulled it out of the water. I only stayed in for two
Minutes and the temp was about 9 degrees Celsius. I would definitely try it if I were you.
It helps, after 6 weeks my hands and feet are no longer sensitive to the cold. I also have cold showers daily guess this helps
@@Evaselfmade thanks! Should try it out a little bit more than I've done.. I took cold showers for one month two years ago (only cold water, not even starting with a little bit warm water). Here in Norway, the tap water is very cold. Atm I can't do it, I always chicken out when I try it

Is cold exposure bad for diabetics? If so why? I have heard that diabetics do this often to help the blood sugar and it works.
Uses up sugar. New research said it could even starve cancer because it deprives them of sugars
I am washed on this way ice water not pain but effect health . Wash hot water hand good health and pain.
I’ve done this a hand full of times and it still so painful. What helps me is putting my hands and then taking them out when it starts to hurt a lot (10 secs) . I do that twice and then I can go the full 3 minutes
So what does it help with?
@@saahirahmed3323 swelling, pain
I do it over and over until I my hands can stay in the water easily. It hurts every time until the very last ones where the pain is gone.
I do this to cool myself down in very hot weather. Don't know if it will cause arthritis.
Oh my gosh YES it's sooO effective 😄
thats not how arthritis works, like you can get arthritis for example if you punch walls with your knuckles so much that all the small bones get so thick they cant move properly and that causes like constant inflamation in the joints, arthritis is inflamation in the joints, any joint..cold water doesnt cause inflamation, it supresses it, and sometimes inflamation is good bcuz its a way for the body to try to help the effected area so sometimes suppressing inflamation can slow down healing but if you for example condition your knuckles to much and get arthritist bcuz of all the extra bone facking up your hand then your not getting totally rid of that arthritis, its gonna flair up alot. Fighters condition their bodies and just bcuz you need to be more careful with the hand doesnt mean all conditioning gives arthritis, you can condition your shins without such things happening, thats just a big as bone without all them small bones with all those joints with fine motor skills. You can get arhritis indnthe wrist by keeping it bend forwatd all the time like sleeping on it bend or playing with a computer mouse all day everyday. Using the fingers too much like in climbing and not giving enough rest to the fingers and ligaments. Cracking knuckles doesnt seem to do anything to hurt you either in a normal person, its just gas bubbles between the bones that pop when pulled and then they refill again snd that doesnt cause arthritis. Using your thumb too much when swiping on phone can cause arthritis in the thumb (inflamation) it is advised to flick with another finger and more of a motion with the wrist instead off repetative short motion that doesnt even complete its full motion and therefor cause a lot of friction. People use there hands to much inwards and doesnt train the hand to open and extend backwards enough. Also to get stronger and fmore flexable wrist bending them backwards and forwards helps, also training forearms, wrist curls..Safe knuckle conditioning can be done doing knuckle push ups. Did this anwser what you asked? But if a person has extreme arthritis the i think those people hurt for from cold in general.
@@AckSnus Thanks so much for the comprehensive info. ❤
I keep my hands in super cold ice water everyday for atleast 10 minutes am I causing nerve damage or anything crazy like that my hands almost burn and they cramp like crazy but I’m willing to deal with the pain if it’s beneficial?
You only need to do 2 minutes to get the physical benefits. Anymore is more just for the mind than anything else.
I did put my feet 🦶 on the ice 🧊 and water 1 min , i was screaming so bad cold 🥶 and pain . I have very bad pain my foot 🦶 and very hot only when i go out walking or running...... I done the blood test and was good . But do anyone why i have the pain foot 🦶 and hot ???
arthrit?
I could only last one minute will try again tomorrow.
Does this have the same benefits as soaking the body or does it only benefit the hands
It only benefits the hands obviously because the hands are the only thing getting cold
why do I sweat immediately after my hands merged in ice water ?
Due to shock and stress. But overtime it will gone. Take small steps.
I'm the opposite. I immediately stop sweating.
I promise you that it get rid of stress headaches unfortunately it does not get rid of migraines
Why do it to the hands, your not saying how it benefits us? Is the only reason to get used to cold? We are hoping the Dr knows the answer, we don't...
How long can I do this for? You said 2 minutes, but I literally can’t find any scientific information anywhere about the true maximum. I want to do this longer than 2 minutes, will I damage my hands if I do?

I soak my hands for 5 minutes in ice cold water 3 times and 5 minutes in hot water 3 times. A total time of 30 minutes. Hot shower for 7 minutes and cold water 7 minutes. I wake up every morning refreshed.
I love ice water for arthritis pain in hands.
Makes sense. That's great to hear!
Hey Siri, my Siri popped up 🤣 technologies these days
🤣lol
How is this harder than a cold shower?
Why don't you try it out? I do cold showers every day and this is way worse. A cold shower is not full immersion in 35 degree water like this is; your shower in winter doesn't come close to this cold; just get a cup of your cold water and check it with a thermometer. Mine is about 40 degrees. Plus, a shower is not getting all over you at once, and the water heats up as it slides over you, so very different dynamic. I find it very painful but when you are done, a few minutes later your hands feel fine!
I don’t know, but it sure is!
Yes definitely, I can't do 2 mins with my hands it hurts so bad but could do the feet.

Ok, first, I have some problem (understatement of the year) with heat in my body. I feel uncomfortable at 20 celsius....room temperature, and up. I tried this, but I didn't hold my hand still, I waved them around and believe me, it's a LOT colder that way. And my bucket had a lot more ice than that. So I tried to torture myself to get my body temperature down....which is something I do six months a year; try to get my body temp down!! But when I've done this for seven minutes, waving around the cold water (I got bored), I felt uncomforable, but I never felt any pain really. So....am I a temperature freak, or what? I tried to describe this to my doc, but they don't believe me, or they didn't listen. So what do you say? I can pretty much sit with my hand in icewater until the ice melts. That can't be normal. But then....what's wrong, and what can I do?
(Summers are awful. Four or five months when I practically lie in bed, panting, day in and day out, and as soon as I move the temperature spike, and if I don't slow down there is a good chance I'll faint or more often get very close to it. I've learned over the years at what point I should just give up, and find the coldest spot within five steps, and lie down. I usually don't faint at that point. But what do you think? Thyroid? I know somethings up with it. Not cancer btw. I had a good day when I learned that! But why the hell am I this way? You shouldn't walk around in shorts, in sweden, in december (doesn't happen often, but I don't wear "long pants" at all until pretty much november)!!! Help wanted!
You seem to have more of the fire element in your body. Consult a good Ayurvedic doctor and find out about your body type and customize your diet accordingly. You'd need to eat things that cool you down naturally instead of stuff that produces more heat in your body.
Using WIFI and EMF radiation?
Do that if you want to develop atrhritis in your finger joints..
That's not how arthritis works
My cousin and i do a challenge were we put our hand in a bucket full of ice for 3-4min and what happens is that its so painful when we take our hand out, right now its almost 24 hours after we take that challenge and i cant sleep cause it still hurt so much even when dreaming i can still feel its pain. The pain is like a beating of heart? But in the hand and very painful
but its not dangerous, that time is nothing BUT you may have done too much too soon right? everything is like that, if you try doing alot of pushups now when your not used to it you strain yourself in all kinds of ways and may get a stabbing pain in the chest muuscles or near the ribs for example and then be extremely sore the day after aswell. Holding your breath for as long as possible too long and too often the same day makes your body really stressed and gives anxiety symptoms and your throat gets a little swollen cuz it had to work and strain not to take a breath. Lifting too much weight under 7 days can tax your nerve system too much and your body gets all wrecked and you get sick. So starting slow and progressing in a steady pace is the best aproach in everything. A little bit of pain and adrenaline is good for your health, it starts up your immune system, but when you have had your immune system started for the day then you dont need to continue to start it up beqause we need to get some rest from the stress aswell, but no stress at all makes us more likely to get sick. So if hands in ice hurts the same night then maybe 30 seconds would be enough for like a week, its like if i have too tight shoes then the same night i can get stabbing pain in the toes just beqause of the shoes like 12 hours before.
Discipline.
I broke my penis bone, will this help me with my recovery? I dont want to tell my parents and my girlfriend is coming over in 2 weeks so i need to be healed by then
Lol why
Try and submerge your junk in ice water, might help. Shrinkage is normal.
maybe not, inflamation is actually good for ya at the start of an injury, that means that the body has started to try to fix it, but chronic inflamation is another thing so if you have a chronic problem then its best to just cancel any plans.
