This is by far the best ice cream banana plant video I've watched for info. I traded a jackfruit for one that was about 6ft tall. I expected it to produce in about 9 mos. Here we are a going on 2 yrs later and lots of pups but no fruit. But now that I've seen your video I know they're coming soon! I'm so excited. And I may relocate a pup to start a bunch of plants in another area of my yard with more room. I want lots of these bananas. For me and to share with the neighbors. Thanks for doing this video. I imagine it took a lot of work to put together!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and found it informative. I have 2 other varieties, Cavendish and Naine, but the Ice Cream is my favorite. I’ve also relocated some of my banana plants in order to get more, can’t have too many. Best of luck with yours. Thank you for visiting and happy holidays!
Love all these ice cream banana videos it really inspired alot of people to start growing some and it's getting very popular now . I planted alot in my yard now I got a little nursery growing and hopefully I'll have alot to harvest this year .these ice cream plants are beneficial in so many was they clean the atmosphere and clean the pollution and create air and heal the ozone layer good for mulch and produces alot of fruit once established very nutrient able to make a income by propagating and very therapeutic speacialy when ur in the garden and u see all the joy it brings like bees hummingbirds and your able to share 😀 gods gift to earth 🌎
I completely agree. It’s been a lot of work getting here, but well worth all the effort. I enjoy spending time in the garden. It’s great to be able to walk thru your garden and enjoy the day while picking healthy fruit that can be shared with friends and family. Thank you for watching and happy gardening.
I’m also growing a couple of other varieties (Naine and Cavendish). So far, the Ice Cream is my favorite. I might try to pick up another variety like the Apple Banana (AKA: Manzano). I’ve read that it has very good flavor so I might give it a try. Presently, I’m not selling any plants, but I’ll keep you posted if that changes. Thanks for watching!
@@Zone10aBackyardOrchard That sounds great! I just got an apple Monzano, and a Musa Mysore. I put them in containers yesterday, and I’ll put them in the ground in May:) good luck with your bananas!
Thank you for the great video! I like all your videos. If possible, could you, please, add as well more information about pest and desease control , if you have any with your plants.
That is a great topic to cover. I’ll keep that in mind for future videos when appropriate. Thank you for watching and I’m glad you are enjoying the videos.
Great video. But I noticed that from the early stages of the formation of the fruit till the harvest, there is no hint of the blue color as its other name suggests, Blue Java.
That is a good observation. From research I’ve done it is supposed to have a slight blue hue just before ripening. I currently have 3 other plants that are at various stages of fruit development. One of them is close to being ripe and there is a slight variation in color, but it’s not blue, least it doesn’t look that way to me. All other characteristics of the Ice Cream banana, or blue java, are definitely present. They are relatively small and a bit more plump with a sweet vanilla like flavor. The length of time to start fruit production (2 yrs) is also consistent with the blue java banana. As I mentioned in my video, this one was purchased from a big box store. Hopefully, it was not mislabeled and it is a true variety. I might at some point in the future purchase another blue java from another nursery just to compare. Regardless, I will definitely keep growing the one I have which has excellent flavor. Thank you for visiting!
That banana heart/flower bud is edible, look up recipes in Thai, Vietnamese & Filipino cuisines. I'd suggest a Filipino dish, Kare-Kare, which is kind of like vegetables (banana heart, noodle beans/yard long beans, eggplant & bokchoy) in a mock curry made with peanut butter &thickened with ground toasted rice grains & colored red with anatto. By itself it's a bit bland, kinda sweet from the peanut butter but you eat it with a bit of salty shrimp paste, which seasons it. The stew can be made with beef oxtail & beef broth or full on vegan maybe sub the shrimp paste with another vegan condiment as long as it's something salty, savory & a bit funky.
I’ve heard that the heart/flower is edible, but I’ve never tried it. I’ve also heard that the leaves can be used to wrap and cook meat and other dishes. I’ll have to try that someday. Thank you for sharing and thanks for watching!
@@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Using the leaves is the easiest. Like organic saran wrap or just lay them out on a table like you do newspapers for a crab feast or something but this one's actually waterproof & smells nice. Just remember to singe the leaves first to make them more pliable & less brittle. Pass the over an open flame on your stove until they turn from matte to glossy. They say you could also freeze them for later use. But have not tried that yet.
Generally speaking, yes. The mother plant will produce several pups as it matures. The best ones to keep are called Sword pups/suckers. They are the ones where the leaves are narrow when they start to sprout. Once the mother produces fruit it will die off and the next generation will continue the fruiting cycle. Thank you for visiting!
I have a few that are in pots and they are doing well. The ones in the ground tend to grow a bit faster and produce fruit more quickly. Either way they both will do well, just a matter of preference for me.
@@larryhoover9365 I’ve grown Cavendish bananas in pots before and they did very well. The difference between the container and those that were planted in the ground was that it took a little longer for container grown bananas to fruit and the growth was a little less. Also, keep in mind that the container size will impact growth rate significantly. The larger the pot the better. I expect the Ice cream banana will do the same, a little less growth and longer period before fruiting. Thanks for visiting.
They will do okay as long as they are properly fed, however; taking out some of the pups is best. The mother plant will do better if some of the pups are removed. Remember, once the mother plant bears fruit it will die off so you need to leave pups for your next crop. Also, when removing pups, try removing the water suckers first. Water suckers will eventually produce fruit, but will take longer vs the sword pups, which are more vigorous and will produce fruit quicker. You can tell the difference when banana plants are young (leaves on a water sucker are much wider than the sword suckers). My plant should have been thinned out much sooner. I will be thinning mine out when time permits. Hope this helps and thank you for watching!
I only use organic fertilizers. On the 1st seasons application, I use - Dr. Earth Flower Girl Premium Bud & Bloom Booster 3-9-4. After that, at 2/3 week intervals, I use - Lilly Miller All Purpose 10-10-10. I only fertilize during the growing season (spring thru late Sept early Oct). Also, if the banana flowers during this time, I stop fertilizing. Both of the above fertilizers can be found online via Walmart or Amazon. Banana plants have a fast growth rate so they are heavy feeders. I’ve recently started using a stronger first season fertilizer - Grow More SEA Grow Flower & Bloom 4-26-26. I’ll post banana plant updates on future backyard orchard video tours. Thank you for visiting!
In areas with cooler temps they tend to take longer to ripen. The flower for the bananas in this video began to emerge in December. Since the flower developed during winter, that may have contributed to the long wait. I presently have 2 plants that are developing bananas. The flower off these began to develop in April. They seem to be developing much quicker. I’m hoping these won’t take as long. We’ll see. Thanks for watching!
It could very well be that it was mislabeled. I’ve had 5 harvests off this banana patch and none have shown the blue hue that they are supposed to show just before ripening. Thanks for the info!
Congrats on your banana harvest. My ice cream is about 8ft+ now and i cant wait. Hopefully it fruits next year. Anyway feel free to check my videos out.

is that Bill Evans playing in the background?
Not sure. It’s from the pre-loaded music software used from the video editing tool I use or from the free background music via YT.
Do you not to remove the the majority of the pups or do you think with enough nutrients they can all thrive?
