I have something like 5 pups around the original plant and I think it's an ice cream, because in 2017 I bought an ice cream and a iholena and the guy who does the yard ripped off the two separate labels and broke one of the two little plants before planting them each in the back yard. The surviving plant I named "Barney," and he's brought forth quite a few suckers. I think I can tell which is the water one by the huge leaves early on in its growth. But my Barney plant is nowhere near 15 feet high and yet he's finally making bananas for the first time ever. They don't look as blue as the blue Java seems to show the skins of ice cream bananas though. Barney is still an amazing plant. Here in Southern Florida, it's nearly impossible to determine what's the right "season" to start looking for specific things to happen with a plant. We say, here in the tropics, we only have 2 seasons: wet and dry 😜
My 3 ft tall ice cream banana plant has 10 pups. I did not realize it would get so big. I live in north Florida and get a killing frost every year. I will need to build a Victorian style greenhouse to protect it from freezing. I do have two dwarf banana trees, maybe I can build a big enough structure to protect those.

Hello Mcfirefly2. So far I have tasted the Blue Java (Ice Cream), Manzano (Apple) & Goldfinger on my property... and Blue Java is by far the most productive, best quality & flavor bananas. I'm giving the other 2 varieties another year or two to earn my families approval, otherwise they will be replaced by the Blue Javas!!! They are the very best!!! Charles :-)

Once temperatures fall below 50-55 degrees fahrenheit the plant stops growing-- So it's best to not shock the plant in anyway when it cannot recover and grow from the process. Mine just produced a lot of pups and only grew about 4 feet. Finally cut the pups and repotted them…so I’m waiting another year to see what happens….they just don’t produce like the other specie banana tree I have.
That banana plant put out its last leaf already, you can tell because the last leaf is always smaller than normal. After that leaf comes the flag leaf.
Hello ThePlanetSaturn, I thought so too-- however, that banana plant continued to put out a new leaf just about every week until the first week of September. It seems like the blossom is now emerging from the plant. I live in zone 8 (zip 36877) and have purchased 9 ice cream banana plants this year. Out of the 9 two just turned brown and died in the pot. I planted 2 directly into 2 of my compost bins. One reach nearly 5 foot then the leaves wilted and eventually the plant fell over. The other one is thriving and already has 2 pups. I have 5 left in planters and another one has leaves that are wilting and is already showing signs of leaning. I know it’s late in the season but I just put it in the ground and gave it a good watering. Not sure why this is happening. I’m also not sure what to do with the remaining 4 in the pots. I was going to try and place them on my porch this winter where they can get sun and to try and keep the frost away from them. Then I can plant them in the spring. Any suggestions on the 4 in pots and what’s going on with the wilting and leaning? All are roughly 3-4 foot tall. Thanks
OK, I just got 2 Ice cream Banana pups from a gardener friend, and I followed your video instructions to transplant each in their own pot. They are almost 3 ft tall. How do I know when they are ready to be transplanted into the ground? And, any instructions on transplanting from the pot to the ground? Neither had much in the way of roots when I planted in to the pots, just nobs. I trust they will survive until they are ready for transplanting to the ground. And, what time of year is it best to transplant in to ground in South Texas (Zone 11)... it's fixing to get super hot here soon...

However, I have purchased bananas on-line from places such as Ebay and Amazon; however, double check to make sure your source is from a reputable nursery to ensure that you are getting exactly what you order. Note, I have paid as little as $3-$10 for some very small (less than 4 inch) banana starter plants that would reach maturity and support fruit in under 24 months. Your label says it can take temperatures down to 10F/-12C. Really? So they could be grown in the UK? (ie weather like Seattle/Vancouver but with less rain)
Banana trees need a lot of sun, and so that could be a problem in UK, as it is in Vancouver. You might be able to grow them, but it's unlikely that you would get fruit. I get fruit in Los Angeles, but people in northern California have trouble.

We live in South Carolina. I just received three suckers from a friend in which I gave her from the parent tree from our old house. Now I put them in pots as to not be so invasive in our yard, is the care of them any different? Also my friend has seen banana's on her tree but never make it past that here in the south due to hot temps then they die back. Any tips would be helpful. Hello Kathleen C Saunders, I somehow missed your comment... but here is the answer.... For your potted plant, make sure you use potting soil mix (not just any soil mix). Make sure you water your potted plants thoroughly between watering, and allow the plant to almost dry out between watering s, but never bone dry. With regard to the hot temps killing your fiends banana, consider the many microclimates that exist surrounding your home. There is always one side of your home that gets the most morning sun, another side that gets the most afternoon sun,... for example, the most southern part of my garden (living on a hillside) it typically shade all of winter & soil nearly continuously moist... the northern part of my garden is sunny nearly all day, year round... the western side gets the sun starting at sunrise... the eastern side gets the later-day afternoon sun. So, using my above example, the most north & eastern side of the garden would be the coolest place with the least risk of summer die back. I would recommend planting the banana in different zones on your property (also try different varieties) to learn what works best for you & your friend. I've heard that I may have to wait until early spring for ripe bananas when the process should only take 60-90 days to mature after bloom!? Anyways, when I lived in Boynton Beach and Boca Raton between 2007-2012, I ordered a variety of small bananas (only 2-4 inches tall) in the early spring and some went into fruit production that same year. Her are a couple links where you can order smaller and cheaper plants.... But I recommend that you wait until February to order as even in the Florida warm winters, bananas grow better in spring, summer and fall. Hello That_Guy89 x, The goal is to apply organic fertilizers that are high in nitrogen (N) and potash (K)-- And lower in phosphorus (P). So the N-P-K numbers should be something like: 5-1-5 or 10-2-10. However to achieve this I would add products such a fish fertilizer which has an N-P-K of 5-1-1 with Espoma Potash which has an N-P-K of 0-0-6. Liquid feeds should be repeated more frequently (up to every 14-30 days -- See directions for details) compared to granular fertilizers that can continuously feed the plant for up to 3 months (see directions for details). I also like to mix different organic fertilizers (kelp meal, blood meal, some bone meal, etc), compost, compost tea ,etc.... with the goal of getting as many macro and micro nutrients to the plants that will ultimately support fruits loaded with these same nutrients used to feed the plant! :) Let me know if you have any other questions! Hello Skibrzy, The sword is not male nor female. Both sword & water suckers are identical clones of the parent banana plant. The sword is more likely to develop into a fruiting plant in a shorter period of time. The water sucker typically produces other suckers that dominate it's self to product the fruiting plant. My first ice cream banana plant purchased created a sucker that quickly grew taller and with much more vigor than the original plant... therefor, I pruned the original plant to the ground to give all the resources to the sucker that within 1 year produced the flower & fruit... and know I am enjoying new fruit on a new sucker each year! Pups are not created equal. You have sword suckers and water suckers. Although you did remove the water sucker as you should your explanation of why is not correct. The sucker you choose to leave should always be a sword sucker and not a water sucker.

Hello Chris Dann. Agreed! The bananas in this lesson are all self-fertile; however, the general rule with fruit trees (even seedless/ parthenocarpic varieties) will typically have heavier fruit set & better fruit quality than those pollinated by self. Thanks for the clarification. Charles :-)

PSA: That is NOT the Blue Java banana. If label does not state it explicitly then it is likely Namwah banana, not Blue Java.

i have a ice cream banana but it prob won't fruit cuz i live in zone 4b and i experience winters and keeping it indoors will be tough

Liquid feeds should be repeated more frequently (up to every 14-30 days -- See directions for details) compared to granular fertilizers that can continuously feed the plant for up to 3 months (see directions for details). I also like to mix different organic fertilizers (kelp meal, blood meal, some bone meal, etc), compost, compost tea ,etc.... with the goal of getting as many macro and micro nutrients to the plants that will ultimately support fruits loaded with these same nutrients used to feed the plant! :) Let me know if you have any other questions! The sword is not male nor female. Both sword & water suckers are identical clones of the parent banana plant. The sword is more likely to develop into a fruiting plant in a shorter period of time. The water sucker typically produces other suckers that dominate it's self to product the fruiting plant. My first ice cream banana plant purchased created a sucker that quickly grew taller and with much more vigor than the original plant... therefor, I pruned the original plant to the ground to give all the resources to the sucker that within 1 year produced the flower & fruit... and know I am enjoying new fruit on a new sucker each year! Pups are not created equal. You have sword suckers and water suckers. Although you did remove the water sucker as you should your explanation of why is not correct. The sucker you choose to leave should always be a sword sucker and not a water sucker.

Hello Chris Dann. Agreed! The bananas in this lesson are all self-fertile; however, the general rule with fruit trees (even seedless/ parthenocarpic varieties) will typically have heavier fruit set & better fruit quality than those pollinated by self. Thanks for the clarification. Charles :-)
@@IVOrganic I agree in all but bananas. I have 9 varieties and the big difference in the crop is water and fertilizer and not cross pollination. It is a difference in blueberries which I have 24 plants and 12 varieties. Thank you for the response.
