  • One of the most mislabled bananas in Florida - Ice Cream bananas. Here we show the difference between Blue Java and Namwa bananas - both sold as ice cream banana here in Florida, though most labeled ice cream are a Pisang Awak banana like Namwa. We grow around 65 varieties of bananas here on our farm.
    Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

    I remember thinking I bought a blue Java only to find out down the road it was namwah. However many people said the namwah was better and it certainly turned out to be excellent.

    I love that you note the difference between blue java and nam wa are the knuckles on blue java hands vs the collared nam wa hands. I purchased a banana plant labeled ice cream banana from a local nursery and one labeled blue java from home depot here in long beach. Sadly, both were collared; nam wa and so I have yet to experience an actual blue java. Great video..thanks for the info

    Ahh…now I get it. Years ago I bought an ‘Ice Cream’ banana plant. I have since grown many clumps and transferred them to through 4 home purchases. I’ve also given many to family and friends. Then a few years ago I began hearing Blue Javas were Ice Cream Banana plants but my bananas have very little blue color. You helped me out a lot to u swear and my plants are actually the Namwa variety. Thank you much!

    If it has green apple flavor it's not ready, you want blue javas to be super ripe because bananas more they are ripe more they are tastier. A super ripe blue java is going to be incredible. Also how identify Blue java banana plants from Namwahs
    1:Check the underside of the leaf, if the strip aint magneta, it's BJ, if Yes it's namwah
    2: check for red stems, if it has no red coloration it's BJ, if yes Namwah
    3:touch the fruit, it should have some glacuous bloom, if not it's Namwah
    4:pick a hand of fruit and see if they have knuckles, if they are collared they are Namwah
    3 and 4 for fruit and 1 and 2 for plants bought from a nursery

    I also bought a Blue Java that turned out to be a Namwah. The Namhah needs to be brown. I absolutely detest the taste of brown store bought bananas, but that is when Namwa's hit peak flavor. Absolute best is to leave a hand on my dashboard in the morning and by lunch they are warm and all starches converted to flavor and sugar.

    I bought a banana pup online that was advertised as blue java. 15 months later and 3 more pups later it produced 2 bunches that looked exactly like the one you identified as namwah so I was a little ticked off. Now I am in my 2nd year and the pups from last year are producing bunches that have no nuckle and look exactly like the blue Java.
    This year I got 3 bunches and on one bunch I seem to have a mix of both. All these plants all come from the original pup.

    How interesting. My husband opens bananas like yours. I thought it strange, first few times I saw him do that! Probably said it was the wrong way too. 😂He prefers it that way, and in the end we both get our bananas. 🥰
    Pretty sure I have a mis-labeled banana that is a Namwa. Red on stem, not blue under the leaves. If we can ever figure out how to get it to fruit before frost/freeze kill (South Carolina), then we can be sure.
    The way we eat grocery store bananas is the soonest from green that can be broken into, the better. Even one spot of brown usually means we will dis-like the flavors. Best eating banana to me is the one with green still on the base, that is difficult to peel. My husband likes them the day after that. Short window. We don't even like the spotty bananas in sweet cooking. That harsh ripe flavor is too much in banana breads and such.

  • @jamesmeador3982
    @jamesmeador3982 3 роки тому +3

    I totally disagree about the blue Java being less preferable when it gets more ripe. The farther ripe the blue Java get, the more vanilla ice cream flavor that comes out. If you’re getting green apple flavor from a blue Java, it’s not ripe enough. That’s my 2 cents.

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  3 роки тому +1

      Are you sure you aren’t eating nana? Blue Java breaks down quickly when over ripe. Seems to have a very short time frame for optimal ripeness compared to namwa

    Blue Java banana's are over rated. They grow too tall. The leaves have poor wind resistance and look like crap. The plant itself is just skinny looking and the fruit taste is waaaaay overrated. Dwarf Namwah is the way to go. The look beautiful especially the pink P-Stem. The leaves are very nice. Very vigorous grower that consistently produces nice bunches.

      Blue javas should be not considered as a ugly machine, the leaves and fruit have a beautiful sky-blue-greenish color, the plant is much more bigger than namwah making so that it can provide more mulch and looking more like a palm appearing majestic in the garden not counting the thin stem,they also do not have the problem of namwahs becoming seedy if they are pollinated by fertile pollen. The problems are, that it needs propping,the leaves are not wind resistant, the fruit is not as good as namwahs and some others but don't forget to grow it
