I'm running a 11.5" 1:7 twist on my little guy, but when I shoot my M4 I do have to say the 3 extra inches do make a differences. You will never notice it till your shoot them back to back. but I will not go shorter that 11.5" I'm with you on that!! Keep the vids coming
Food for thought, copper rounds like the Barnes 70 grain TSX will expand out past 200 yards with a SBR. They are designed to expand all the way down to 1800 FPS. While this is great for SBR’s, it’s just a great for a 12.5, 14.5, 16, etc because it adds on about an extra 100+ yards of expansion compared to your typical ammunition while still having excellent penetration. Downside, it’s expensive. Also, this was an excellent video. You hit the nail on the head when you said that they take more effort to shoot well. I once went down a precision SBR rabbit hole and found out what your said. Still accurate, just harder to shoot well.
If I didn't have a DI gas system length to worry about (I have my eyes on gas piston uppers), and I wanted something as short, and effective as possible, should I still go for an 11.5?
Two years late lol. But I agree. 14.5 with a mid length gas system is a real sweet spot. I still sbr/pistol it tho. Just like the look of the short flash hiders

It killed all who needed killed, just fine evidently. 2500 FPS is blazing fast btw.
My first SBR was a 7.5”, tons of fun (I still have the upper) but I went with a 12.5” while waiting on my can to clear as I wanted to stay within warranty restrictions, now I’m a big fan of my 12.5 with with a griffin Optimus in the mid length configuration for a patrol rifle/bedside gun. I’ve been tempted to try an 11.5 but I think I’ll just use the 12.5 as an excuse to get a dedicated 5.56 K can and then get an 11.5 later.
Thanks for the info. I'm older then you. Been carrying the AR since the early 70's. I like the 16" barrel length. Short enough to clear rooms and long enough to reach out. Suppressed is not in my future but a decent light system is. Thanks for the heads up on the surefire light pad. Will check it out. Stay safe, stay strong.
Well, I just bought a PSA 10.5 upper before seeing this video. The PSA is a first time build for me. When complete I’ll post my thoughts. Thanks for the video.
That's why I buy lwrc ic-a5 uppers in 10.5. Perfect dwell time with the piston system. Suppressed mode and no gas blowback. My specwar original suppressor on my ic-a5 10.5 sbr is the quietest suppressed 5.56 gun I've ever heard. I've also tuned it in the buffer tube and changed to a 10.5 govt profile dimpled barrel to save weight.
Next I'd like to hear your thoughts on all the different rounds being made to solve a non-existent problem. EG; .50 Beowulf, .224 Valkyrie, .458 SOCOM, 6.8, etc ad infinitum.
Lord Flannel, one of the few people on youtube that puts out amazing content every single time. I drop my pants as soon as I see a video uploaded on his channel cause I know it's going to be packed with detail and accuracy. I'd like to see him make a few vids with ballistics gel or testing and explain all that good stuff.
It was created to fit through doorways without getting hung up even with the stock fully extended. It fits through bulkhead doors on ships, fits through standard household doors. If you plan on entering a habitable structure, vessel or offshore platform while armed then it's the right choice. If you intend to be the bush bunny and never enter an enclosed structure again then definitely try to get another 3+ inches of barrel to get that extra energy available.
They were intended for cqb but be able to step out and touch someone further away then 9 and 10mm mp5. Mk262 mod 1 77 grain work awesome. We smoked tons of dudes in Afghanistan with the mk18
Thanks for all the great videos! On the length issue, higher velocity equals less time of flight to target, which equals less drop (and more forgiveness for distance estimation), and less time for environmental factors to affect the bullet (i.e. wind). So higher probability of hit with longer barrel (up to a point when the muzzle velocity flattens). Plus all the benefits of terminal ballistics. So longer is better... 😉
You can really see the muzzle flash difference with the 11.5 with a surefire warcomp and the 12.5 with the bcm birdcage. So if running a short barrel unsupressed maybe a 3 or 4 prong flash hider is a good idea.
11.5" better dwell time. I went with a 10.5"' for my first SBR. Then read what BCM had to say about the increased dwell time. The 14.5" mid length is a cool option too. But the 14.5" let's you mount your bayonet!
Thank you father Thumb for this video, I've been wanting to build my AR for a long time ever since I purchased the lower and I've been tossing ideas about barrel length and not ever making my mind up and I'm glad I found this I now figured out what I want
I have an 11.5 with a mid length gas system. Short dwell time, and I had a lot of gas until I switched to a blue sprinco spring with a cyclic reducer buffer and it runs great suppressed and unsuppressed. My second favorite which is becoming my favorite quickly is a triarc 13.9 upper and it’s a dream to shoot
I have an 11.5 mid length pistol with an adjustable gas block carbine spring and carbine buffer and it runs super smooth and clean no issues ever. It’s probably my favorite gun that I have. I like how little recoil the mid has and on an 11.5” it’s a dream
i generally consider sbr's 7.62nato/5.56nato are made for inside 300 yards. there are more practical options for reaching out than the ar platform. but sbr's imho should be between 10-13 inches, regardless of chamber choice. they are designed mainly for cqb, so that is the setup. if you think clearing rooms with a a 16inch barrel is a breeze, you've only cleared sprawling mansions lol.
I’ve had AR pistols in 10.5”, 11.5”, and a 12.5” and my favorite is 11.5”. As long as it’s correctly gassed, 11.5” was the Goldilocks for me. All were suppressed. For unsuppressed, I like 14.5” with midlength gas system.
@@flawless_Cowboy yes. If the muzzle brake/flash hider is “permanently” affixed. That gives you an overall length of 16” making it a rifle and not a SBR. Most 16” barreled guns are really 17.5” if you add the A2 flash hider. They just pin and weld the thing on. A gunsmith can get it off if you ever wanted but you can’t just spin it off with a wrench like you can on a 16” barrel. Tons of companies sell 14.5” pinned and welded barrels directly from the factory. Mine is a BCM and that’s how it came from them.
@@stampstepper2393 you don’t need a stamp if the muzzle device is permanently affixed making the overall barrel length 16” so I have a normal stock on it
I agree wholeheartedly. If I had a choice of only one barrel length for an AR, whether suppressed or unsuppressed, it would be the 12.5”. I happen to love Triarc’s 12.5” middy. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@DTreatz I ended up selling it and have a Criterion Core 12.5 to replace it. For reliability, carbine gas properly ported will be great suppressed and unsuppressed. A mid length gas 12.5 has to be more finely tuned. I could do a A5 and A5H1 buffer both suppressed and unsuppressed with Triarc. It was smooth shooting, but I preferred going with a tried and true gas dwell time over something that is a less recorded in terms of reliable functionality. Simply put, if you can only have one, I’d recommend a carbine gas. Also check SOLGW 12.5 barrel.
One time while serving a warrant I bumped my mag release button on my rifle in the van. (I'm left handed) As I made entry into the hous,e the target of the warrant was bringing to bear a Ruger Super Redhawk, but dropped it immediately. As I was raising my rifle to address him the mag fell out.
12.5 is probably overall the best and shortest sbr/ pistol upper length; less than that your dealing with major performance issues on most calibers, yea 300BO does well in a 10.5 but without suppressing 12.5 is where its at if carbine lengths are just too much for ya. This comes from 2 gunsmith conglomeration, 45 years combined experience 100s of builds and 750k+ rounds; dope books are worth your time folks
Shot an M16 in boot camp 1975, bought my AR15 in 2016. Slapped the mag in with the bolt closed, cycled the rifle and the mag fell out. I thought the rifle was broken until a 13 year old kid (kidding) who ran the place told what had happened. He was very respectful and taught me a few other things as well. They just keep getting younger dont they? He was one of the good ones for sure.
I have a Faxon 11.5 mid length and it shoots so crisp and smooth very little recoil. You need an adjustable gas block for it to work properly but when it does it’s the best shooting rifle I’ve ever shot especially in semi full auto.
Honestly 14.5 seems applicable everywhere, still makes that 556 good out to about 300 meters and that’s a good intermediate rifle to me while still being short enough for most cqb applications.
I was used to a fixed stock 20 So a 16 inch with adjustable stock feels like cheating But to be honest my favorite is a 20 upper with carbine stock get that maximum effective muzzle velocity!....and bayonet lug I like that option
11.5 is best length for all around long distance and short. Alot have done test and used a very Long barrel and cut some off each time all the way down to 5 inches and they all found 11.5 is best over all for not losing alot of velocity and being functional perfect.
I love how he ripped on the navy with the short barrel comment. I fell out my chair😭😭. You know what they say about the navy 5000 men go out to sea, 2500 come back as couples....
Ran a 10.5" suppressed 5.56 for years, no issues. But I'll never go back after doing a 13.7" pinned and welded. I get better velocity, the sweet spot for that caliber, it's a rifle, not an SBR, and it's just as maneuverable in a house yet way more affective at long range.
Interesting. My 12.5 BCM stopped cycling on me in the middle of a rifle course. Sent it back to BCM and they did fix it, but never told me what went wrong. My theory is the non-pinned gas block (BCMs are set-screwed) came loose. For the money of BCMs, I really wish they would pin the gas blocks.
I think some of the short barrel effectiveness issue can be resolved by using polymer tip hunting bullets like Vmax that will expand even at lower velocity
Myself I had alot of experience for years running a 14.5” barrelled M4, I agree longer guns are tighter shot groups at farther ranges however being able to drive a shorter weapon feels better to me when in cqb situations for sure.
Don't mind this comment or give it anytime pls just greatly appreciate these videos. WOW! Awesome points that the common shooter and even expert level experienced (albeit in limited weapond) can learn greatly from. Plus love the humor and the whole 'cue in dude that says OH YEAH WOULD YOU WANT TO STAND IN FRONT OF 10.5' you crack me up brother
I built a 7.5" range toy, even with the adjustable gas block and swapping of buffers/buffer springs, it has been a tough gun to deal with. Outside of that I'll take a 12.5" or a full on 16", unless it's suppressed.
I have had a 7.5" build for some time now with no issues at all? Seems to be very handy and stores very well in small bags and other places. Unless you are LEO or Military on-duty, I am seeing for me encounters at 100yds at most with the vast majority at pistol fighting distances or a bit more? Not really mad at anyone more than 100yds away! I'll just leave or sucker them in closer?
We started making 12.5" barrels with a mid gas system for suppressed use in 2010, we could not keep them in stock. 5R rifling, 8 twist and Wylde chambers.
Planning my first AR "build" gonna be a pistol and am going with a 12.5" because it makes the most sense to me, based on years of shooting/ reloading.. glad this video/ comments confirmed my choice ;)
Paul Harrell disproved your concerns about accuracy and velocity up to 200 meters, as well as effectiveness at 50 yards against the new and improved meat target. don't hate the chodes
Why not 300 Blackout?? It was designed to solve the short-comings of a SBR 5.56 (suppressed). YES it’s more expensive but non of you shoot enough for it to matter.
Joshua Bressel - so you don’t like it... the rest is opinion and my mileage varies greatly with your summary. I have 3000+ rounds of supersonic through my 9.5 300 with ZERO A-typical fouling. And only a single failure to feed due to a bad mag that once tossed... never another fail. Reloading or not is irrelevant- everyone makes economic choices on ammo. I shoot commercial 300 for no more than 50-60c a round and I will reload... but rarely unless cost is north of 75c. To your point on cost - here’s my math. One of garands fully set up BCM’s optics et all is going to be 3K.. My math says that’s 6000 rounds of feed for my 300Blk 9.5”... After years of shooting - my shortest 556 AR is now a 14.5” just because “insert random reasons proven in 30other videos and barrel inch by inch chop off velocity tests” (and my opinion too). Ever wonder why the 3 gun champs use 18” AR’s... cause they straight up work for 556 to cure MANY things AR centric.. But I also blast off 400 rounds of 20c surplus 7.62x39 in my PWS diablo if I just want to shoot steel inside 100yds... I’ll take 125 grains of lead inside 150yds all day long vs 556 in short barrel
In SBR, my wife likes 12.5. I like 11.5 because it flexes less and you can still get good dwell time and muzzle velocity as well as distance . If I am going concealed carry but not commando I like 10.3 because it's really more maneuverable, comfortable, and more easily concealed so my wife doesn't get jealous and I get to go shooting more. But to be honest, if you are point blank where most of the action is at, you'll get plenty of action if you are sporting anything above 10 I think.

I started with a 10.5" but couldn't get it to run 100% reliable while suppressed. Tried adjustable gas block and heavier buffer, the problems persisted. Switched to a 11.5" BCM barrel on the same receiver and it runs great with and without the can. Haven't looked back.

Love the convenience of pinning/welding a 14.5 and not having to deal with a pistol brace or form 1.
Not 10.5"? I get the gas, cycling, feeding for the 5.56mm x 45mm. The .300blkout caliber seems a bit more forgiving but I dont shoot rifles a lot...

@13:47 "Read... Reading.. Important" lmaoo you really slowed it down for your marines right there, thank you for that Semper Fidelis i think i get it.
RIP
Voice is sounding hoarse, kinda like Christian Bale Batman. Now just need you screaming "Swear to me" before shooting.
This needs to happen!
He already does that about 20 minutes every day.
Why do you think his voice is raspy in the first place?
He had pneumonia. Just like I currently do. Now I’m not saying it was transferred from him to me....but I’m also not NOT saying that...

“I have to try so much less with a longer barrel”. So.Damn.True.
I have a Faxon 11.5 mid length and it shoots so crisp and smooth very little recoil. You need an adjustable gas block for it to work properly but when it does it’s the best shooting rifle I’ve ever shot especially in semi full auto.
Absolutely love the 12.5 I just put together.
I want a 12.5" and am looking for a 10 or 11" handguard. I'm using a Aero precision M4E1 upper and lower. Which did handguard you go with?
Longer barrels help to penetrate things much better. ;)
thats what she said

My wife has never told me 6inches is alot...
@@Rob_Nasty If it looks like a pile of Arby's roast beef down there then yes she probably is...
would like but it has 69 likes
Your camera guy must be a beast being able to sprint around after you, keep it mostly steady, and still take a good shot.
Honestly 14.5 seems applicable everywhere, still makes that 556 good out to about 300 meters and that’s a good intermediate rifle to me while still being short enough for most cqb applications.
I was used to a fixed stock 20
So a 16 inch with adjustable stock feels like cheating
But to be honest my favorite is a 20 upper with carbine stock get that maximum effective muzzle velocity!....and bayonet lug
I like that option
Yay! Garand acknowledged that he’s a living meme.
the best is when that unseated mag lands on your bare foot
I always run ops in my bare feet for maximum sneaky powers. The foot ouchies hurt, but the stealth makes it worth it.
Sure my Airsoft operator salomons are squeaky-weaky. gotta go. moms coming
Daddy thumb with the extra raspy voice today
Chris M he sounds more like Christian bale Batman today
Grown ass men calling another guy daddy. Smh
11.5 is best length for all around long distance and short. Alot have done test and used a very Long barrel and cut some off each time all the way down to 5 inches and they all found 11.5 is best over all for not losing alot of velocity and being functional perfect.
12.5
I love how he ripped on the navy with the short barrel comment. I fell out my chair😭😭. You know what they say about the navy 5000 men go out to sea, 2500 come back as couples....
Actually its 2501.....theres always at least one cheating scumbag...
i don't care how shaky your cam is! you don't scare me!!!

Pure gold.
I blew out my o-ring watching this video. Now it hurts to fart

😂😂
*cracks open a Monster* Man, 5.56 is barely lethal. Just use a Garand. Now that's deadly. Drops people in one shot.
AAAAAH, YOU WERE MOWING THE LAWN ON SATURDAY MORNING AGAIN!!!!
Heh, a Garand. Now THAT'S a rifle.
it's true, I play a lot of Call of Duty so I'm sure of it
Ok boomer
matty0234 boomers would be the kids of those that used the garand. I doubt anyone that used one in the war is using UA-cam lol
Ran a 10.5" suppressed 5.56 for years, no issues. But I'll never go back after doing a 13.7" pinned and welded. I get better velocity, the sweet spot for that caliber, it's a rifle, not an SBR, and it's just as maneuverable in a house yet way more affective at long range.
basic training 2007, FT Knox! 19 delta! happens to the best of us
Interesting.
I just don't understand...How come 12.5 in. never get any love? Thank you so much! You make me feel more secure with myself...
@pplebite because only in this case... the shorter the better. 😁
Folks figure if they are buying a stamp might as well go as short as possible. If their was no NFA 12.5-14.5 would be the most popular barrel lengths.
I personally prefer the 11.5"/12.5" guns in rifle calibers and 10.5" in 9mm carbines.
I run a 12.5 with a Troy Claymore. The recoil is not bad at all and the noise isn’t as obnoxious indoors compared to a 10.5/3
I think some of the short barrel effectiveness issue can be resolved by using polymer tip hunting bullets like Vmax that will expand even at lower velocity
I'm here dad
Konrad Sutherland so am I
That smooth roast to the navy. Beautiful
@Juno right lol?
We started making 12.5" barrels with a mid gas system for suppressed use in 2010, we could not keep them in stock. 5R rifling, 8 twist and Wylde chambers.
I searched through all of your videos to rediscover this one to help me decide on an upper. Thanks a ton

Finally, a Navy joke. Even though I don't understand it, you finally made one. Thanks Garand!
Planning my first AR "build" gonna be a pistol and am going with a 12.5" because it makes the most sense to me, based on years of shooting/ reloading.. glad this video/ comments confirmed my choice ;)
Six inches is a lot when you only have three!
It's not the size that matters, but the motion of the ocean. Lol XD
"6 inches is a lot" Thanks I needed this.
If you also get ASMR tingles in your head every time garand starts talking after the intro hit the like button.
Such fluid movements man its poetic
Paul Harrell disproved your concerns about accuracy and velocity up to 200 meters, as well as effectiveness at 50 yards against the new and improved meat target. don't hate the chodes
He's not exaggerating about the comment section...you have been warned my friend...

*Excited simp noises*
Wtf? It is a good length
I love watching these throwback Garands in a pitch black room with a 40+4Loco
Dude its funny to see an operator become flustered and almost blush discussing barrel lengths.
I just dropped a log as long as that barrel
local natives i bet you can take in a hog as long as that barrel
Uh oh, someone's jealous!
+1 fleet foxes
Damn. I have a bravo company 11.5" upper. Thanks for the validation garandthumb!
But to be honest, if you are point blank where most of the action is at, you'll get
plenty of action if you are sporting anything above 10 I think.

Hahaha my buddy dropped a half seated mag going up to a house on an operation.
Was about to leave for class. was.
We're all glad you understand what's important....
As another college student, I feel that so hard
I'm glad I'm not the only one.
at Valor Ridge this week for rifle I, tac reload before a drill, quiet on the line, bring my rifle to ready position, mag drops to the concrete and shatters the silence. 😕 subscribe button smashed
I started with a 10.5" but couldn't get it to run 100% reliable while suppressed. Tried adjustable gas block and heavier buffer, the problems persisted. Switched to a 11.5" BCM barrel on the same receiver and it runs great with and without the can. Haven't looked back.
Very informative. I've been researching this exact subject as I'm in the market for a new AR pistol. Thanks a million!
