I generally shoot my Beretta 690 III field gun with 28” barrels for sporting clays and hunting. While the auto safety of a field gun is a downside for target shooting, I like having the consistency of having the same gun for practice and field.

You’re right , it’s all down to personal preference , I shoot clays with a Benelli 828U Silver 30inch with 1/4 and 3/4 extended chokes . It’s a very light gun but it works for me . Took me a Miroku MK38 , a Webley and Scott 951 sport and Hatsan semi auto before I found the right gun . Should I have gone to a shooting school and saved a few £s , yes that would have been a wiser decision rather than using my gut instinct or direction from my local gun shop . You live and learn 😁👍

I rarely shoot clays, however, as a sporting lay out replicates the flight of quarry birds and some of the stands are referred to as such, The springing teal, high pheasant, the wood cock, bolting rabbit, it makes sense that a game gun is perfectly suitable. When I shoot clays I treat it as a preseason warm up, so I never call a clay with my gun in my shoulder. I shoot ever clay as a game target, to ensure a good gun mount to the shoulder.

I’ve been able to successfully hunt almost every type of game bird here in TX and other neighboring states. My trusty go-to is a 1st gen Beretta 3.5 Xtrema w/ a 26” barrel. It works for everything but the balance is noticeably front heavy due to the mechanism. Shopped for the last 10 yrs for an O/U that might fit my 6’4” height and I finally settled just this year on a 30” Belgium made Winchester 101 Sporter which I’ve already taken birds with. The balance, lighter weight is a welcome change even with the 4” longer barrels (I know, semi auto vs…). Can’t wait to take her to a clay course!

I shoot American skeet - roughly 20,000 targets a year - practice and competition. My skeet gun is a Krieghoff K80, 30 inch barrels, with a Briley tube set for the sub gauges. The gun weighs approximately 9 1/2 pounds with tubes. My gun has an adjustable comb, with an aftermarket adjustable butt plate. These features are very useful to make sure the gun fits me properly - every time I mount it. Further, my K80 has a parallel comb - unlike field guns, which have some drop in the stock.
For bird hunting, I use one of two guns - either an early 70's vintage Browning Superposed, 26 inch barrels, choked skeet and skeet, or a Krieghoff K20 Parcours, 30 inch barrels, with Bailey thin wall chokes. The Browning is terrific for quail - the relatively light weight and the "quickness" of the gun work well for this sport. The K20 is better for wing shooting - mourning doves, etc. - the ability to select somewhat tighter chokes is an advantage.
Skeet scores in the U.S improved significantly with the widespread adoption of sub gauge tubes - and the corresponding increase in gun weight. A heavier gun is not only better with regard to recoil, but (once you are accustomed to the feel of the gun) it is very helpful in facilitating a nice, smooth move on the target, and a good follow through. After years of shooting my K80, if I take one of my field guns to the skeet field it feels like I have a kid's air rifle in my hands - the gun is too "pointy".

If a gun fits you well and you are consistent, doesn't matter what it says on it, my go to gun is a 1970s miroku 700 game, and i wouldn't trade it for any new sporter that i have tried, people get too caught up in what brands and models olympic level shooters use, sales patterns for them to make you think you need both

We are all talking about different guns and the preference we have, at what point should we consider POI ? A 50/50 vs 60/40 vs 70/30 and so on….A purpose built 80/20 trap gun is not a good field gun. A 50/50 field gun could double as a good sheet gun or 5 stand. Point is that there is more to consider then just weight or appearance.

      @trap_skeet_clays_2867 2 роки тому +2

Yes, I agree there is more to picking the right shotgun. My Citori CX has 60/40 POI which works fine for me when shooting American Trap but then I switched to American Skeet and needed to buy new Midas skeet choke tubes. I am still learning something new everyday.

I am also in the USA, I have the CXS. Very good field and skeet gun and reasonable gun for the other clay games except trap. Going away and rising clay prefers a higher POI. The BT 99 fit that need with an 80/20 POI. This all being said I’m sure some folks are awesome at everything with whatever gun they use. ;-)

    * There should not be much of a difference between the two, except that the clay target gun should be heavier to help mitigate the recoil from shooting many targets in a shorter time frame. A single trigger and a longer barrel can be advantageous for the target shooter. A broader rib can also be beneficial to the target shooter depending on shooting style or what type of clay target discipline is being pursued, ie. trap shooting, etc. As far as screw in chokes and adjustable stocks are concerned, these are important to have on any shotgun. The stock must fit the shooter whether it be by a custom stock fitting or an adjustable factory stock. The double triggers on a game gun is an advantage over the single trigger, due to the unexpected distances that a game bird will present itself to the hunter.
Wooing the crowd at your local gun club with a nice looking gun maybe important to some, but in the end it's all about your ability to break a target. In the field, there's not to many people looking, many times it's just you and the birds.

We shoot American Skeet with a Browning Citori CX 12g 30” or a Browning Citori CXT Micro 12g 28”. The CX & CXT are designed as cross over guns for American Skeet, American Trap or American Sporting Clays. I believe the CXT is really designed for American Trap with its heavier Monte Carlo stock and beaver tail forearm. I just want to have a fun day of shooting with my family and break clays at our club. Greetings from Naples, Florida, USA! P.S. We shotgun clays only not game. The Winchester 101 is also a great gun around USA $1,100. I shoot American Trap with a Remington 3200 with 30” barrels.

I started with a clay gun and then moved to hammer guns before recently upgrading (or rather going from 19th to 20th century) to a best London SxS. The only time I've wanted an o/u since then has been on flurry days when the difference in forend design becomes a burning issue. Then again, I do this for the enjoyment rather than the score, my shooting style (and temperament) are not suited for competition. Gun fit and a couple of lessons will have more impact on your score than barrel orientation or "type" of gun.

I have used s/s on clay completion days, and o/u sport guns on game days. I use the gun I want to use on the day. Granted on walked up days I will use the s/s as lighter, and if double gunning will use a sports gun due to the number of cartridges I will be putting through them. I am lucky though to have a wide range of guns in my cabinet.

I’ve got two shotguns. A Browning B2000 semi auto and a Remington 1100 semi auto. I have two barrels for the Browning, 30 and 32 inches, fixed full choke. My Remington 1100 is the skeet model with a 25-26 inch barrel and a fixed skeet choke. The Browning is more of a hunting gun for me, although I shoot a fair amount of trap singles with it. The Remington I bought specifically for skeet, trap doubles, and sporting clays. I don’t have too much preference either way because the Browning is kinda limited. My barrels are set up for 3 inch shells and won’t eject 2 3/4 inch shells. I use whichever works best for what I’m shooting. The Browning is better for ducks, but it’s pretty good for trap.

I shoot a Browning BPS Trap Model & an Ithaca Model 4e Trap Model made in 1918 at the trap range. I bring my field guns (Browning BPS Hunter Model & a Browning B-80) to the trap range prior to waterfowl season only to make sure they functioning properly. I have patterned all of my shotguns and shoot all of them equally well. BTW, the last time I had my Browning Double Automatic (field gun) to the trap range I ran 25 straight with it. I make a point of keeping a small notebook in my range bag to remind myself how all my shotguns pattern.

I'm just starting out at clays, and didn't wan't to spend a fortune, so I got an old 300 quid Varani Zanano game gun, with minimal vents, 70cm barrels and fixed1*/3* chokes. My instructor keeps passing me his big five-grand Beretta trap gun, but I actually prefer my old party-popper; It's got lovely engraving and woodwork, feels light and quick into the shoulder and it has a lovely 'click' when I break it (the Beretta just 'clunks'). I genuinely prefer shooting it, and I'm no less terrible hitting clays with it. It's fun, I love holding it and I can use the cash I've saved for other stuff (like a nice holiday to keep the 'missus' happy); Tell me I'm wrong!

A bit of snobbery? Yes. Will a Skoda get the job done? Yes. Is the Jaguar just better? Yes! You can’t claim it will be the same experience for both. It’s the same for firearms. Yes my less expensive Savage will knock down game just as my classic Model 77L will. But the later is just a better shooting experience period.
