  • A comparison between some of the music from the original GameCube and Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. The remake has the ability to switch back to the original soundtrack by equipping the GameCube badge. This video is intended for anyone unsure of which soundtrack they'd like to hear in-game. Obviously this doesn't cover every song but hopefully its enough to show which version is preferable.
The Switch version also has multiple variations of various songs, the main battle theme for example sounds different depending on the location of the fight. But if you prefer the GameCube soundtrack you probably won't want to hear them while playing anyway.
As mentioned in the comments, Rogueport has multiple sound channels that change dynamically so what you hear in-game will likely have better mixing and sound better overall. The other songs in this comparison do not have dynamic sound channels to my knowledge so it should sound exactly like it does in-game.

the new soundtrack to this game is genuinely so genius. Taking the techno sound of the tracks from the original and mixing their sound with the color splash/origami king sound that more heavily relies on orchestration works perfectly.

Woah, now actually comparing the songs (beginnings for me) I feel like the remake did an incredible job.
But I feel like it changed the music style a lot. GameCube versions sound more uncanny to me, whilst the switch versions sound more like festival versions / versions you can listen to without playing the games it feels like… I guess I’d compare it to when I hear old songs and decide to look for a hardstyle version. I really like the song, but the hardstyle version is just enhanced, sometimes losing what they wanted to be, but differentiating themselves enough that it doesn’t bother me. (because most songs that are covered by the hardstyle community are older or like childhood songs for me. I feel like it’s the same medal but enhanced and sometimes interpreted differently.)

This is a neat comparison video! They really went all out on the Switch remake of the soundtrack, didn't they.

I adore the new OST. The Switch version was my first time playing, and I tried out both versions with the nostalgic tunes badge, but I just enjoyed the vibe of the new soundtrack too much not to go with that.

I think I might be a bit biased but the new ost is definitely a major update, The old one was and still is a great soundtrack but taking that and blending it with the style of Origami King’s style is something I can’t reject.

Rogueport is a bit of a downgrade. It doesn't sound nautical enough.
Edit: Nevermind. Apparently there are a bunch of channels the game can toggle; nintendo EU twitter showed a much more faithful version of the track.

You're right. I think there are four channels that dynamically toggle for Rogueport. I tried to be fair with the comparisons but I had a feeling something was off with that one. I wasn't going to include it but I felt Rogueport was a bit too nostalgic not to include. I'll make a note of that in the description, thank you for pointing it out.

Why does it sound like you’re exploring the final dungeon

I like the old OST better. The Switch one might have more detail to it, and its well composed, but I feel like in the case of Paper Mario, less is more. The new music is a bit too much, it doesn't really set the mood of the scene like the old music does.
