Here are 12 subtle differences between Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Nintendo Switch and the original for the Nintendo GameCube.
Nintendo changed A LOT of things, including interface, interactions, animations, and also curious things like the time it takes for Mario to fall asleep!
being able to whack anyone with the hammer is something that truly enables my intrusive thoughts, I genuinely think I've done that to everyone in the game now
Zess T. will feel my wrath.
I did that to that blue koopa from chapter 3 because he called me a idiot for not eating the cake
it's actually kind of encouraged because hammering everywhere helps find star pieces from the ground
I think Sticker Star/Color Splash invented that. Huh, the game that everyone (not me) hates.
@@AGZhark oh I'm well aware it's a modern paper mario thing but it's just better with TTYD because they have proper reactions to it instead of just getting crumpled up
The partners have sprites for when their backs are turned to the camera. In the original, only Mario had them.
Making matters better, several of the NPCs are more expressive! They really pushed the animation for this version of the game!
One thing I disliked, is how Mario and Goombella turn and look at the Piantas pummeling that dude in the background. I liked it better when no attention was drawn to it, and it was more like an Easter Egg, and it gave a vibe like no one notices or cares; Goombella because she's used to this place, and Mario because he grew up in Flatbush. But, it's in no way a deal breaker, and I do love to see the back of Goombella's head, it makes the character seem less... _two-dimensional._
@@Wendy_O._Koopa Wait, they really had a look at fight occurring in the background? I either wasn't paying attention or I unintentionally didn't allow for the game to load the specific reactions for Mario and Goombella. I may have to take another look to confirm what you meant.
@@Wendy_O._KoopaAnd right after, Goombella makes a comment how she hate it's in Rogueport cuz of the "weirdos" and "freaks" that are literally getting jumped in broad daylight.
@@Wendy_O._Koopa they still kept the fact that no one cares tho, Mario, the hero, does nothing because of not caring enough, and Goombella is like "Yeah... This place sucks, anyways"
Mario in the og game:👋
Mario in the remake: 👍
I read apparently because the 👋 in the OG looks too similar to the Nazi salute.
@@thewhitewolf6715Yeah it does seems like it XD, but to be honest i wasn't thinking about that until people start talking about it. Wasn't it censored to in the EU version btw ?
@@thewhitewolf6715What tf
At least they kept the wave when he appeals in battle.
@@hitasuperkevin64icies65 Pretty sure it was censored in the GC EU version, yes.
1:47 I appreciate how the game shows the picture of the 64 crew in the same position as the opening cutscene for Super Paper Mario cause this does take place before that game
Gotta say, the remake feels like a perfect blend between the original and The Origami King in many ways.
Origami King is so vastly underrated.
and that's all I've been asking for man
I didn't want this blind hatred for the paper aesthetic, we could have both and I'm so glad this remake did it and then some!
You're so right!
@@monster25mangotta wonder why people hate paper aesthetic in paper mario…. Like thats the base premise of the aesthetics.
@@cocolanfofolan2508the hate came likely from the plot being paper related as well. And so it was like a side effect. Because as much as the paper is beautiful, the villain being black paint or origami is much less interesting. Now that we have a game with a plot that’s really good, the paper aesthetics just make the game pretty. At least that’s my belief. I don’t necessarily know..
The fact that npc sprites have models to act when they're being attacked by Mario opens a lot of possibilities for modders, they could make any NPC an enemy now. Let's go!

Some corrections for #1 & #2:
The opening cutscene *does* play before the title screen, but only after a file has been started.
When the opening cutscene is played in this way, dialogue still progresses automatically, complete with dialogue sounds.
I'm trying to think on what could make that difference and my only theory is that if the introduction automatically starts, there's a chance you could just skip by it. If for your first time though you're already actively interacting with the game, that means you're giving enough attention to see the intro through for the first time on your merits.
Dunno if this reasoning makes sense or what they were going for, but it's just a guess.
@@TheCapitalLetterM I think it's precisely that. Many small things to ensure people understand the whole story and don't accidentally overlook stuff.
Also making dialogue more interesting via little emotes and more unique music themes such that people are less incentivized to skip past it
They even added more facial expressions to the characters!
I noticed it immediatly after the prologue scene ! And also when Mario flips a little when a question is asked
@@dasilvaolivia6559 Yeah, I like Mario flipping when a question is asked!
And his looking up is fucking cute
@@nekogamer2508it is!
@@dasilvaolivia6559I love it when Mario flips a little when a question is asked!
One change I am surprised, and kinda confused about, but is ultimately pointless, is that you can no longer name your save files. It's the first thing that I noticed, and like I was, "Maybe they'll let us name them later, when we get to a Save Block?" but they didn't.
I noticed this too! I thought I was misremembering but you’re right! Unless it’s further in the game, (which would make less sense, I suppose) you don’t name it anymore. But it’s still fun either way! Enjoy playing! 😁🔥
I suppose there’s no need for a feature like that anymore cuz different people would be playing on different Switch profiles now. Naming save files used to exist to keep track of which files belonged to which person. It’s a shame they removed it but I get it
The cockroaches in Rogueport are also hammerable, and will drop a coin upon being squashed
1. I LOVE being able to whack NPCs. It's just so silly.
2. I'm sad the 180 camera turn when going to the back of Rogueport was removed.
I didn’t care for the fade to black in the alley. I wanted to see the full rotation on the Switch!
I'll admit it's a bit jarring for me, too. I'm used to how it was in the original.
Yeah it’s small but it makes it feel… wrong
Same here. Also I miss the exclamation point and the text bubble, I liked the simplicity of it. Very minor gripes though for a very near perfect remake
@@JerginBootwyler Yes, I find the original interaction icons more charming than the text and button prompts we have now. While this remake is indeed solid, it will never fully replace the original.
I can understand the reason to change it. It does look a bit disorienting. Yeah, it does sorta subtract from the quality a tad bit, but it’s a change that can be justifiable.
While I love this remake...I miss the high-pitched, "EEEE!" audience members make when whacked.
Same, the crowd is way too quiet
yeah and why is everything so quiet when you get a freaking Bingo??
@lif6737bruh (to you, not the game)
@lif6737those are nitpick's though
@lif6737literally? Telling me THAT alone LITERALLY ruins game? You are very picky then if THAT there makes it lose 5 pts of rating... Or you're just misusing that word...
I'm not against your take, but wowie...
When I played the original as a kid, I used to pretend I was hurting NPCs with my hammer, and I would hit everyone I ran across for laughs. So glad this remake made hitting people more entertaining. Brought back my inner violent child! 😄
I'll admit there is at least one character I would love to give a clobbering to. I couldn't help myself when I confronted him at once. Thankfully, nothing happens for relentlessly whacking him. I can't say if there are other NPCs who are just as passive.
also cool thing about Mario's house is that it has a portrait of Mario's past partners in Paper Mario 64
It also has a portrait of the TTYD partners in the ending cutscene.
@@frazercowan4030and in super paper mario
The developers knocked it out of the park with the remake’s visuals. The game now looks on par with the visuals from Color Splash and The Origami King which I am a huge fan of. Those games looked stunning in my opinion.
But without these big white outlines on every character.
These white subtle parts on the characters are way better in my opinion.
And that's the problem, way to bright for the vibe of the game
@@miwer1000 If you think TTYD is "dark" you're kidding yourself. 💀
@@timotheatae actually you're the one who's kidding himself if you think TTYD is 'not' dark.
The similarity to its more modern counterparts make it stand out much less on its own tbh. Feels like
a direct downgrade for the sake of 'modernizing' the visuals.
And CS and OK were nothing to write home about visually. Especially with the neurotic hyper-focus on paper aesthetic.
I will admit, I miss the exclamation points and speech bubbles. I think it's a more charming way of denoting when something is interactable
I agree.
Agreed !
I actually think the black cut with the 180 rotation cameraspots is way more jarring than "clipping" into the buildings was before.
Especially since they do actually still show the camera rotating for a split second and then just go black.
If I had to describe TTYD fans with one word it would be...picky. No offense intended but it's kind of a recurring theme.
I hate the new "Cleared!" Instead of "END OF CHAPTER!" It was so much more dramatic and really felt like I was accomplishing something. Now it feels like i just beat 1-1
agreed. really hurts the vibe of the game for me. this and like 50 other things kind of bog it down for me overall, almost to the point where i'd probably prefer the original
That change was weird to me too, it just feels incomplete, like the old Dark Souls YOU DEFEATED message
I could see the change if it was "CHAPTER CLEARED!" but as it is now, it's odd
@@carnage0685 the original is still far superior. The handcrafted artstyle of the original is gone in favour of a computer generated look. Everything is shiny for no reason. Idk how anyone likes it.
@@CR-og5hoBecause nostalgia doesn’t blind everyone. I still own the original GC version but this is a really good remake.
@PolInKenexel Haha, that's one way to do it. I grew up on the og but I absolutely adore the remake too. I do admit them using cleared for the end of a chapter was a bit odd, but it's really minor and not much else. People often talk about small changes like it ruins everything
I dont like the fade to black when the screen rotates because that actually helped you see hidden things before
Well, that just sounds like cheating.
No wonder they fixed that.
@RJS2003 it was intended. It's to make you wonder "how the heck do I get that?" Or "where is the path to that side?" Kind of thing.
In many areas where you enter a building and the room moves, it still does it. Like the shop in West Rogueport, when you enter, you can see the stuff behind the wall in the alleyway as the room turns.
It was a fix to help with the frame rate to reduce any lag or choppyness during that transition because that part of Rogueport has a lot of intractable tiles, npcs, etc.
@@mistahkrazy805 The difference with the West Rougeport shop is that the sideways shot into the alleyway actually _looks_ intentional. There's a Star Piece. Go get it. Clear and obvious why they kept that.
The back alley transition shot in the OG though, what does the player actually gain from seeing into the wall of the Toad shop? A nice look at a clipped wall model? It's _in_ this video. Not gonna lie, it looks less like it's intentional and more of an afterthought.
Also, forgive me, but I find it hard to believe that not only clipping through the wall but the player having to ever see it somehow helps the game's frame rate. Surely there was a more elegant solution, like just... not having to see that.
@RJS2003 I don't think they were thinking about that back when the made the game in the early 2000s. Nintendo has to do things to make sure their games run smoothly when they update them for today's technology, even the Switch isn't some major upgrade.
But what I said before, they just had the entire portion of center Rogueport as one "map" screen. In the Switch version, they made the Alley it's own map screen, that's why the fade to black. Separating the two saves power/date for the game. Which doesn't seem like much, but it does help.
You can do a glitch by stunning the seventh partner (Ms Mowz) twice while moving away from her, then quickly hammer and use mowz's ability to do the glitch. (This is called "Text storage", and you have to be far enough from mowz to make it so she has to teleport to Mario to use her ability.) The glitch basically allows you to move in Ms. Mowz's dialouge.
I honestly don't like the fade to black when going to the back of Rogueport plaza. It makes it feel like two independent areas
Yeah it feels like a loading zone. And they made it way too long
@@TheRealBatabii Ye, and the camera rotating clashes with the fade to black. The camera rotating under the fade effect actually makes it look like a fake rotation effect, thus making it feel more like two different areas
A simple and quick fade to black without the rotation would've looked better imho
@@ddnava96 that's not what "ye" means.
At least it doesnt do these ugly artefacts
I know zero about animation, but maybe they could have had the screen itself do a horizontal flip of some kind? That's how I'm imagining it.
While I like a lot of these changes, I have to say the new "hammer thwak" sound really doesn't have the "oomph" of the original, and I prefer that one in that particular case.
I noticed that they changed it from two sounds to one
A lot of the new sound design lacks oomph. For example, the appearing letters for BINGO or the "chapter complete" text.
And he's already on it making the differences video!
The crowd sounds worse in the remake. In the original with a large crowd, they would whistle and it sounded great! The remake crowd is quiet
I prefer most of the subtle changes beyond the obvious graphical upgrade. Thanks for showcasing these!
#3, this "Chill Music" is actually the same theme used on the S. S. Flavio, I honestly think its better without that theme playing

I was hoping you guys would do a comparison and as usual you deliver! Looking forward to this series :)
I also noticed that the “end of chapter” message has been changed to “completed” instead. They kinda disappointed me a bit.
Um... I'm not seeing much of a difference... it's kinda six of one, half dozen of the other?
Some people don't like the fact they made that guy who stayed up, fall asleep to luigi's story. So much for a hobby lol. Not as bad as censoring the catcalling goombas.
Oh, it's only a minor change. Don't sweat over it! .... Only kidding! Your opinion actually does make sense. I mean, for a game modeled after a paper storybook, you would think they would preserve the "End of Chapter" message at the end. While not a dealbreaker, I wish they kept it in the remake.
Anyway, I'm not sure if you have noticed, but there are a few folks who would like to jump into these threads at random and criticize the folks expressing less favorable opinions towards the remake. "Nitpicks" is what they would dismiss them as. I should know as I had a lengthy debate with one such person in a different comment thread.
Same :/
Have to agree, I preferred the End of Chapter instead of the Cleared
Admittedly the scripted cutscene for Peach in the intro is so much better. The music was made for it and set the tone of the story _PERFECTLY_ while the remake looped before they get to the ominous section of the music and I know it's because of them going with manual control over the dialogue.
The paper thing actually scared me once. I wasn't expecting it and it was JUST close enough to the camera to take up a significant part of the screen.
You can whack anybody in the remake? Somehow that makes Thousand Year Door even cooler
I kind of like the 180 rotate in the original gives it more of a paper effect
Not really

The baby yoshi has no running noise when you're riding it
He does actually, it’s just very subtle. It’s not the original of course.
I miss the the GC version's sfx. Like the walking noise from baby yoshi. Or the scream when you hit an audience member. Sfx in the Switch version doesnt have the same oomf. Other than that, its a great remake
Yeah I noticed they removed the ‘wind up’ noise when you pull the stick back for attacks. Not into that. Decent remake otherwise
@@mredbadger i know it was done by a different company but SMRPG's remake was significantly better than this one. this one is just decent to good, while SMRPG was fantastic.
@@carnage0685yeah I feel that. While this is still a great way to experience TTYD, the SMRPG remake went above and beyond
Like here I’m having a good time, but I’m kinda like, “aw they changed that” and “oh that sound effect is gone” whereas there I was super excited to see everything they recreated
@@mredbadgerin fairness, mario RPG was a game on the SNES with limited aesthetic capability, so obviously a remake of it would totally bolster things like the visuals and soundtrack
Some people still wanna call it just a remaster, but there's so many changes that its clearly a remake
Of course its a remake. It was made from the ground up. How is there any doubt? A remaster would've just made the textures look better.
But ironically a remaster would have been better, because at least it would have kept the 60fps.
@@davion4777it truly hasn't mattered in actual gameplay
@@wetalkinb0utpracticereal
One thing I don't like about the remake is some of the graphical choices, especially in Rogueport with its rough exterior and criminal underbelly. This is the first time I noticed that they polished the ground so Mario is literally reflected in it, which doesn't improve my thoughts. It's style versus substance, I suppose.
The substance is literally heavy weight magazine paper. Full colour magazines have the same reflective sheen in real life, that’s what this is mimicking
I get how they wanted to make the world look as if it's a paper world; however, I would go for some rough, stained paper for Rogueport. Have some of it peel off a little to show the dingy cardboard used to construct the town.
Agreed, if Rogueport is gonna get the paper aesthetic, no part of it should look like clean, shiny paper lol
Yeah, this and the new sounds that play when someone is talking are the only things that kinda annoy me. I liked the old "text" sound better.
@@Laytonmario I'm surprised there isn't a badge for that tbh
I prefer the old alleyway camera shift to the new fade-to-black one.
As much as I love the new voice grunting, I wish there was at least an option to change it back. That text sound is a little nostalgic for me
Think my favorite subtle (or... not so subtle?) difference is the addition of metallic/chromatic/glossy paper effects in the remake. Kinda like fancy origami (heh) paper or business card paper.
Boggly Woods being the *biggest* example of this; in the original the ground was a static purple-blue-green gradient. Remake? It's a chromatic rainbow that *shifts* depending on where you walk.
Other favorite is the Crystal Star Pedestal; you can see the lines sort of *gloss embossed* into it before it glows.
Best thing about the changes is definitely the hammer!! I felt such Joy hitting that toad with the eye contact blocking the west side!🤣🤣🤣
5:53 Oh no! Remakes are in the habit of changing some sfx people like isn’t it?
Admittedly, the hammer sounded a lot more forceful in the original. I liked it!
It feels more like paper and cardboard sounds now
@@RaviaVee Indeed it does. till, I wish the sound had some more punch to it. I mean, the hammer is dangerous.
Actually, I’m kinda a sucker for environmental sound effects, and hitting the hammer on all sorts of different ground makes the kind of sfx you would expect, like hitting the grass or hitting a brick bridge. I just love that sort of small detail in the world
@@williord3050 I will give the remake one thing for the sound design for the hammer. It is satisfying to hit certain background object to make them rattle and emit an expected sound effect.
The title screen at 0:36 changes throughout the game to add each of your partners in
can t beleive idiots called this a port and not a full remake. its a 1000% remake.
Who called it a port? Everywhere I went everyone’s calling it a remake, because it is.
@@BlindMelonLord when the trailer was first released everyone and their mother was calling it a port no one calls it a port anymore because they've been proven wrong but yeah during the very first announcement everyone was calling it a port
@@TheBobist OK. That makes sense then. This is the first time I haven’t watched anyone react to the trailer. Well… At least not a lot of people. I’ve seen a few people I’m subscribed to react to it, and they automatically knew it was a remake. But I didn’t go out watching every reaction so I didn’t know.
@@BlindMelonLord well I didn't watch reactions. I just read the comments on the announcement
Who the hell is calling this a port? It clearly isn’t one.
4:15 you said that no paper flies across the screen in the remake, but it’s happening right here as you walk up to the noose
It feels so weird not hearing distinct speech dialogue after playing the remake. That's something I am SO unbearably grateful to have. It just sounds so... delightful. I'm in love with it
I have a 3rd party Switch controller in the shape of the GameCube one.
The controls are pretty much one-to-one with the original since the Z buttons are where L and R used to be.
I'm glad Nintendo put the party ring on the extra button.
Hitting people with the hammer is the best subtle upgrade to the Switch version. I’m an absolute menace to society.
Dedede: HEHEHEHE LOOKADAT! DADOUSANDYEADOUGHGOTREMADE!
I wonder... what is the referrence exactly? Lol.
I like how you can freaking take your anger out on your party members
Graphics look good but the music and some sounds effects I don't agree. Like the music is too dramatic and the sound of the hammer lacks the oomph.
I think the original sound design lacked oomph in general tho, especially with attack and guard sounds, compared to PM64. I wish the remake improved this more, but the battle sounds do have a lot more oomph than in the original
Og sound of the hammer was also not that good
It peaked with 64
@@linus6718Nitpick but I hate the remake's End of Chapter scene.
I miss the text exploding and how bombastic the music was.
@@trungussplus “END OF CHAPTER” just sounds a lot better compared to “CLEARED”
@@TheDarkYoshi64 Yeah.
Cleared sounds like a hold over from Sticker Star and Color Splash progression.
Though, I don't actually care about the words used. It's just the old presentation with the explosion sounds accompanying the text blowing up on screen that I like.
Enemies also have a get ready animation, which I find extremely cool.
... Why did I think the intro to the game was gonna go into Clocks by Coldplay?
the fade to black takes me too much out fo the game, i wouldve preferred a smeared motion blur to mask the things, but still give you the idea youre in port town going to the back alley and back
Lets also note how partners have back animations, those were exclusive to Mario in the original version, the logo of the remake is more similar to the japanese version of the gc logo, anyway enjoy.
Love that they added the attack animation on NPCs. Made me feel a whole lot better after dealing with that scalper of a merchant in the pit of 100 trials and i needed a way to vent out the frustration on the smirking a##hole.😏
Here’s one for the next one. When Mario Gaurds or Superguards, there’s a new pose/animation he takes for the duration of effect, even if he fails the Guard or Superguard, holding his hand up for Superguard and crouching while holding his hat for the regular Guard.
This was a nostalgia trip to watch, my younger self oblivious to most of the in-game details, I now see that I'll have to get this game all over again just to find MORE details!
I just about lost my mind when I swung the hammer and Mario swung toward the camera. 10/10 upgrade
Another difference in the title screens is that the switch version is just Mario until side characters are introduced. The GC version has a fully-populated cast on the title screen.
All the partners have a back sprite now too, in the GCB they were always looking forward, same with new reactions for cutscenes, dialogs, hits, everything
To add to #9, You can swing slightly "left" and "right" when swinging the hammer forwards and backwards as well!
There are people that will somehow not want to play this game because of these 12 subtle changes, some people can't be pleased no matter what you do.

I don’t know how do I put this.. the remake, especially the beginning feels much more friendly and familiar to newcomers(not having other characters in title screen, sm64 peach’s theme in the letter), it’s like they are a bit worry introducing the original intro unchanged might turn off some for being too “foreign” so they try to woo you in with something more familiar so that the rest of the game feels safer and more up their alley for fans coming from the mainline series I guess
It's called adding more detail
It's still a mystery why the toad store clerks mouth is open like they've seen something shocking
That's... their moustache.
I miss the people in the audience screaming when Mario or his partners beat their shit in for throwing trash or rocks at him. They don't scream anymore in the remake
5:55 maybe its because of the games after the original
I didn't even realize this wasn't a thing in the original because I was so used to it
Another change in the remake to the intro is because there are voices now, a player can hear Beldam’s voice coming from the cloaked merchant.
I know the script reveals this later, but adding a voice clues you in early.
Overall, I think the original had better music and sound effects to go with the story. The new visuals do not fail to impress, though!
Another thing to know with the hammer is that you can actually use the hammer diagonally, not just the simple up down left right
when falling asleep mario whistles too
i think instead of fade to black they should have done a gausian blur for the 180 degree rotation
Im still surprise that they kept the noose in the remake
This game and epic mickey rebrushed are such games that are masterpieceful remasters
"a tridimensional impression" lol
Too bad they retired the scream made by the npc when they leave the theater in panic.
YEAAA NEW VIDEO
Technically it only goes to the title screen at launch if you don't have any save files. This is to show you that the title screen changes as you play with your characters all showing up one at a time on the title. Once you have a save it'll do the storybook intro at boot up again.
5:53
"Front-facing Mario is not real, he can't hurt you."
Front-facing Mario:
- They murdered Mario Sleepy Time music and not even the OG Music badge will bring it back
- You no longer can make your file “name”
- Crickets became frogs
- You can no longer superguard projectiles to deal damage back to your opponent
-I’m almost positive Earth Tremor used to deliver 7 damage? That might be a “me” thing
Anything else I’m missing on “bad” quality-of-life changes?
The new sound effects are so quiet and bad in the remake...
On the remake, the Shadow Sirens are called the Three Shadows. The dragons appear out of the dark which makes it even more scary. Also, Bonetail is a girl instead of a boy for some reason.
Japan doesn't use gender-based pronouns for their animal characters, just these pronouns: they, them and it. In the Japanese version, Bonetail goes by they/them, due to being undead.
I really like the change to intro where now it’s not something I missed and didn’t happen to know existed until years later. I legit didn’t even know how Peach got the Map until like 2012
Thats your fault. It was right there at the start of the game 😆
i love that npcs react to getting smacked with the hammer now. any time an npc starts getting mouthy i just give em a BOP! very satisfying 👍
front facing mario is kinda cursed. also i liked the old 180 even tho it looks wonky.
I accidentally discovered that your partner reacts to getting hit with your hammer and npcs too. After that, intrusive thoughts invaded my brain, aNd ThEyRe WiNnInG😈
It is kind of a shame that the wave effects were removed during Peach's letter, but at least we get to hear her theme song to make it feel special (which is also very similar to the beginning of the first Paper Mario where Luigi reads Peach's letter to Mario, and music plays as he's reading it to him)! Also sad that the relaxing music is no longer present during the logo screen, but, oh, well... I do appreciate all the other subtle details that the remake added over the GameCube original though (although, I will say, I don't get why they kept the noose in the remake since you can't hang Mario like you could in the Japanese version of the original game. They did keep the interaction for all versions of the remake, but, this is not I had in mind. But I seriously digress)!
The fact that the HP and FP use the same modern recovering sound instead of having their unique sounds
Number 8! I knew it. I was playing it the other day and something felt off about that transition, had myself questioning whether their used to be a black out or not 😂. The same with the next one, I don't remember being able to hit forward and backwards and something felt odd about it 😂
I think paper Mario on caffeine is a message from the devs
Maybe it's just me but there are parts that the original game does a little better than the remake, it doesn't mean that it was one of the best Mario remakes I've seen so far.
The only real complaint I have is the silent crowd during fights
I like how on GameCube when you first see rougeport it’s a little blurry when Mario first opens his eyes 😂 my man has been sleeping for a while!
In the french version of the remake, Vivian is no longer referred to a boy
Now Beldam say something like "The three shadow sisters is not a very serious name" or something like that in the french version
Update: When I was about to get Vivian in my team, she said "it took me time to realize that I was their sister... and not their brother"
Now i'm confused is she still refered to a boy or not in the remake ?
Original Japanese: Femboy (adjective is for crossdressing male, pause menu says "actually a boy")
Original English: girl
Original Spanish and Italian: Trans
Remake Japanese: same
Remake English: Trans
Remake French: girl
That's all I know so far.
Original french : cross dressing boy (pause menu said the same thing as the japanese version. Goombella also reffered to this when describing her ...)
Remake French : Trans (only one phrase from vivian lets this through, same as the other versions afaik)
So they pretty much made each translation of the game the same on this topic and made it more respectful to trans people.
I honestly preferred the old transition to the rear of rogueport square
Just beat the remake and I still prefer the original. That new warp room was the best addition though.
One detail you didn't mention is that Mario and his partners now have a back sprite turn when they are walking north/north east/north west
