The transitions with the spotlight shining on the stage are amazing. I've been trying to figure out how pace something like that before and I've usually just given up. It does a great job of building up tension which makes the whole experience that much more engaging.

Yeah. While I don’t like origami king too much (still has that bitter taste in the mouth that sticker star gave the series imo) but the music is PEAK and I’m glad the ttyd remake took notes for the remade music

@@CloakRyznNot exactly. Most are moderate upgrades of already good songs (as well as Grodus), or suitable sidegrades. The exception being the major upgrade with Lord Crump's battle themes.
One thing to note about the Gooper Blooper fight theme in Sticker Star is that if you successfully turn his own ink against him using the Sponge, the theme will shift into a very snazzy version of the Super Mario Bros. theme. I really love that part of the battle lol

That idea with the stagelighting as ranking is really fun and it shows the insanity, of regular mario enemies, koopaling, weird character from game 2 and 3 and then the household materials from origami king, paper mario bosses went through a wild tranformation over the years

Super Paper Mario has the most underrated OST ever dude. I know everyone freaks out over electric guitars + orchestra and whatever but electronic music deserves more love I think. Every song in SPM has such a unique composition and I kind of wish the TTYD remake sounded a LITTLE bit more electronic. Probably a hot take though.

@@Magic_Ice It's just that people don't really talk about it as much as the others. Heck, it's completely wiped off of youtube. Basically impossible to find a full SPM ost on there thats got more than 2 views.
Completely agree, and I think not nearly enough people talk about this. I have an issue with some orchestral soundtracks' tendency to become a bit samey-soundig because the intrumentation lacks variety. Continuing the hot takes: I think Super Mario Galaxy's OST falls victim to this in many places, and that it's not nearly as great as people hype it up to be.
I am by no means an expert on music theory or composition, but it always seems to me that electronic music is more versatile when it comes to covering and featuring certain individual instruments. Orchestra can fall into the trap of just becoming a difficult to distinguish mix of all of its instruments with one taking a distinguished lead, at least that's what I think sometimes.
Part of SPM's uniqueness in the eletronic music is that SPM doesn't try to do a Paper design, it does a Digital Art design. Doing that for TTYD would somewhat break the style.
SPM has the best sounding penis music on the market, woah zone practically invented the concept of penicular pieces
The Smorg battle theme makes it feel like it's telling you several lives depend on you beating this thing.

Haven't finished the video yet but for the thing with Spectacular Finale referencing the SM64 Wing Cap theme despite nobody flying, that version of the Invincibility theme is commonly used as a simple alternative, and even debuted as the standard Super Star theme in Yoshi's Island anyways.

Also, his tastes are in line with most of the fandom. Just the fact that more of the half of the Sticker Star songs are bad and the others alongside it are generic means he knows what makes good music in the Paper Mario series. His tastes are not that far off the mark from the average.
His top picks are respectable even if not the stereotypically popular. And most of his good songs are considered good.

Dual-bladed duelist to me, justifies the legion of stationary being bosses in a paper mario game
Facing what is essentially The Reaper of this world in a duel to the bitter end, with its rules and its guidelines is so exilerating, it feels like a battle for something far greater than what the final boss stands for.
I loved the Nagito appearances every time you mentioned hoped and despair lol. Great list, my personal favorite is Freeze!, so having it in the top 10 is good enough for me, I do think you did Morton dirty though, that song is quite the bop

The Grodus and Magnus von Grapple Battle Themes are amongst my favourite is the Renake version. Hoping we have a video talking about TTYD remakes OST because it is one of the best OSTs in gaming history.

Probably not many people will comment on this, but I want to say that I LOVE the way you eliminate each character from music to music, I'd say it was funny and exciting for me to see the number of characters decrease little by little, original and inspiring ! Very interesting ranking nonetheless, probably some hot takes compared to some popular opinions but hey who am I for juging, I have some hot takes too !

King of the koopas is different in the us version which is probably why you remember the solo as a guitar synth.
This video had amazing production quality and such a fun revelation of which song was the best with the stage revealing each placement one by one. The editing and intentionality that went into this must've been a lot of work, fantastic job man. Definitely subscribed after this great video

It's very easy to find it and mess around with by yourself. It achieved _meme_ status for being called "one of the worst virtual instruments of all time"... But still, some people enjoy it and make funny remixes with it.

Say what you will about Origami King's boss design, I for one think it's cool that a tape roll with a greaser haircut is using a dispenser as a motorbike.
Though the OST is commonly agreed to be peak and that's what matters here
as someone who actually really adores the boss design in origami king, i find it amusing that he clearly isn't a fan of it himself but can't help but begrudgingly admit that yes, even so, origami king's OST is peak
I loved The Legion of Stationary. While it would have been cool to have something more unique than just the stationary itself (like an origami samurai wielding scissors or something), the fact that you’re just straight up fighting these tools is both comedic and cool, since placing yourself in Mario’s role allows you to see how dangerous these things can be if you’re made of flat paper (like having parts of your body removed in less than a second with Hole Punch or actively being ripped to shreds by Scissors). Tape barely had a presence in chapter four at large yet his personality and music alone make him one of my favorites. They also make great use of what each member of the legion would do in the real world to create genuinely fun battle mechanics. And regardless of your stance on them, you’ve got to admit that they at least have more personality than bosses like Lava Piranha or Smorg.

I’m surprised you ranked spectacular finale lower than I expected, mainly just because you said it was the wing cap theme, which the wing cap theme is actually a remix of the Star theme, which actually fits a boss phase in a Mario game where you power up enough to defeat a foe with nearly invincible power, I felt that affected your ranking so that is why I was confused
And what is known as the "Wing Cap version" of the invincibility music actually premiered in Yoshi's Island.

That was a great video! I loved the in-depth explanations, and mainly how each part of your explanation for each theme was done precisely while the section of the theme was playing.
And hell yeah, The Ultimate Show is SO GOOD.
Putting the Cortez's theme above Fracktail is mind-blowing to me. I'm super biased since I played SPM first, because that theme was really memorable for me. But Cortez's was just... so weirdly unfitting. So many things they could've done for a UNDEAD SPANISH PIRATE and they went with... that.
I love how this came out like five days before the TTYD remake completely remixed the entire soundtrack, including new main battle theme remixes per chapter and sometimes per location a la Origami King. Got it in before your whole job got like fifteen times harder.
One thing I loved about each of TOK chapter boss themes was that each of them fit the theme of their chapter and/or their personality PERFECTLY
Great job! Always love to hear opinions that are so different than mine! A note to the editor - those censoring beeps every time Gxxywod7's name is mentioned are absolutely deafening compared to the rest of the audio. Maybe consider replacing it with something softer and relevant to the chapter they are in, like the oink of a pig or the soothing lullaby of the Amazy Dayzee.
Shifty Sticker is unironically my second favourite video game song, ever. It's genuinely insane how much I love it.
As a whole I absolutely love the boss music in this series and TOK especially just took my already high expectations and blew them out the window.

Duuuuude there are soooo many hot takes in this video. Only reason I haven't closed it is because I'm starting to doubt if the soundtrack for these games is so stellar that many bangers had to be put so low.
Edit: i watched the whole video now and yes, its mostly because there are so many epic songs in the series that many get buried in the back. I still feel like theres around 15 hot takes but thats ok for a 90+ song tier list, cant agree on everything

I disagree with the notion that Cortez's theme doesn't suit a pirate ghost. It's just doing it in a much more original way than the "Shiver me timbers and/or rattle me bones" soundfont most composers would default to.

These ranking videos are just exceptional. The presentation, the genuinely insightful commentary, the little bits of personality and humor. I’ve been meaning to get up and go do things for the last 40 minutes and I’ve been rooted in place watching this instead.

I wonder if you realized you used the JP version instead of the US version of King of the Koopas, which doesn't have the guitar thingy, but rather the light vocal-like notes, which imo sounds cooler.
My personal favorite has to be Freeze!, I think it just works so good at making you feel like you are in an isolated cold place in the middle of nowhere but you can hear the sound of the way to the stars beeing really close, even sounding like a rainbow road theme at some points
It's also nice to hear a song for the boss of an icy area that doesn't sound like you are battling evil Santa Claus or a generic snowman.
I love Origami King a lot, and its soundtrack really helped sell me on it. I really wasn’t expecting as much electric guitar as it ended up using but it works so well.
I actually view the final phase of TTYD's final boss as a sort of cautious hope. You've reached your lowest, unable to do anything to her while the droning bassy music plays. Eventually you break out of that despair as one of the most hopeful songs in the series plays, We Believe in you Mario. Then you can actually damage her again as the final boss music plays and it feels like you have a chance. She can still demolish you if you aren't careful, but you have a glimmer of a chance if you keep fighting.
All of that to say that the song is much more emotional and driving in context than just by itself.

Regarding the "Spectacular Finale", that melody appeared first in Yoshi's Island, when baby Mario gets invincible
In fact, it would be the starman tune for that game, reused later as the wing cap theme in Mario 64.
So it's, in reality, a nod to the invencibility you get with Kersti being used.

Funny enough, Magnus Von Grapple’s theme being the second bottom, I agree.

Ill be honest: When this list started, I actually randomly picked one of the 96 choices to kind of be the one I was rooting for, which was Scissors. A little bit into the list I picked The Ultimate Show as my "actual" guess and Scissors was my joke guess.
I didnt expect both of them to be the top 2. So when we got to #2, I played a Game Show "switch doors" opportunity and decided to switch to SCISSORS as my actual guess.
Worth it. Scissors all the way and no regrets.
I was rooting for Scissors too ngl. Only difference was that I didn't think Scissors would be No. 1.

I wish this video came out just a LITTLE later. The new boss themes [in TTYD's remake] are great, and it probably would have saved Magnus von Grapple from 2nd worst.
The original would’ve still been the second worst (assuming original and remake would’ve been ranked separately.

Just a little side note about king of the koopas, you were listening to the Japanese version of that theme, and while your statements do certainly still stand, the "pipes" in the back sound a bit rougher and the guitar solo as well in English version

seeing Doopliss' battle theme at 4 actually makes me very happy, it was my favorite out of the ost, and i liked the chapter overall, with doopliss litterally being one of those ghost costumes you'd see at halloween, or bursting through the wall like it's literal paper.

The voice from disco devil is actually a formant filter synth from Omnisphere, its a really nice sound that's also been used in Splatoon 3 as well!
Dang, I didn’t realize it was an Omnisphere sound! I use a lot of their synths in my own work. Right under my nose this whole time.
One song I would rank higher than you did is Fracktail's battle theme. To me it works very well, both thematically and in terms of being catchy. Fracktail is a ancient dragon that was quite literally hacked in order to go against his purpose of delivering the pure heart to the rightful hero. The combination of both traditional instruments like strings and flute, as well as the chiptune/synth sounds, seems to be a reflection of Fracktail's conflict. Fracktail is represented by the traditional instruments and the malicious program represents Dimentio's control over him. Plus I just find it really catchy, so to me it's a top tier Paper Mario theme.

I like to believe that in brobot battle the goofy part is the real Luigi’s innocence showing out while Mr L tries to shut that back in snapping back into the main melody

I've been preaching for years that Kamek is the single best (and perhaps the only redeeming) part of Sticker Star. He's active in the story (with Bowser just sitting in his castle, he's basically the game's main villain), his dialogue is entertaining and his battle theme is the best track in the game. Glad to see that you agree with the last one.
Brobot Battle is one that I think gets too little praise. That one is frantic, energetic and just overall a jam. Glad to see it this high.
Love the apprechiation for I'm Not Nice's second section. I don't hear many people talk about it, but I love it to bits.
King of the Koopas is definitely my favourite Bowser battle theme in any game, not just Paper Mario. It's just that good, perfectly encapsulating the stakes of this fight.
Now, I haven't played Origami King. Color Splash neither, but I've seen a full playthrough of it, at least. So I have no connection or real opinion on any of Origami King's tracks; I simply don't know most of them. But that one section from The Dual Bladed Duelist you used in your Paper Mario Medley really is amazing. The rest of the track doesn't do it all that much for me, but that one section is super great.
Some people in the comments are going on about how they really like Magnus von Grapple or defend Spectacular Finale, but I think that my favourite of the lower ranked tracks here would be the Master Battle theme. I also quite like Hey You! and Go! Mario! Go! It might just be my love for PM64's soundtrack - if you asked me to pick my favourite overall soundtrack in the series, I do think I would go with PM64.
The fact some of my favorites were in the bottom parts(ex. Huffin and Puffin, Go Mario *GO* , Brobot L type, and Cortez theme with Missle Maestro)

I've never decided on my favorite Paper Mario battle theme until now, but my gut instinct is telling me it's The Shifty Sticker, so I'm glad you like that one too.
The opinion I disagree with most on the low end is Sticker Star's Bowser Jr Battle. I would've placed that one way higher. I love the way the song hands off the melody between the different instruments, and how it switches back and forth from left/right ear. The accordion countermelody they add on the repeat is fun, and the whole bouncy, vaguely swingy feel is perfectly fitting for Bowser Jr. I have no shame in saying it's one of my favorites from that game.
The one I disagree with most on the high end is King Croacus IV's theme. I guess I've never really understood this one? It sounds very disconnected and messy to me. I don't like whatever is going on in the background either. I do really like that Floro Sapien Caverns riff (it's genuinely intimidating), but that's just one part of the song. I'm not sure what to make of it. At least you found some value in it.

95: NOOO WAY. THIS IS BLOCK PLAZA ALL OVER AGAIN. Genuinely one of my absolute favorites from TTYD and while I accept that its basic and repetitive, I can't help but have a thing for the orchestral hits and the percussion makes this song hit right out the gate and bounces all the way until the fight concludes. It gives off such a potent energy that screams "not this guy again!" in the best kind of way. It's the perfect theme to accompany a boss who clearly isn't that big of a threat but is constantly causing problems for you and the gang. Oh well, better luck next time Lord Crump
93: I can totally justify this placement, but I feel like its a couple dozen placements too high for the song that would eventually inspire Mario Sunshine's Bowser Motif. Guess we'll see.
91: Mini-boss ass final theme. It honestly doesn't sound _all_ that bad, but yeah I can see where this comes from
90: Remember what I said about Lord Crump's theme encompassing the "Not this guy again" mood? Jr troopa does the same thing in the WORST kind of way. While Lord Crump builds hype and a sense of ego-boosted attitude that makes you excited to bring this loser down, Jr Troopa feels like it knows this boss is pathetic and is just playing to the feeling of making him a thorn in your side. (I hope this makes sense)
88: The intro of this one CARRIES. I LOVE those harsh cutoff, techno-y orechestral hits, but then it goes just kinda get goofy and fail to go anywhere. Totally vibe with this placement but its got some strengths in there
70: In the same way you think the yellow streamer is generically deserty, Lava Piranha is painfully "generically volcano-y. It feels like a really painfully forgetable melody and the original Paper Mario's sound font just doesn't sell this battle's intensity as much as I think it should
66: Damn, Fearsome Foe is a hidden Gem. I really vibe with this one's tone and I'm gonna have to remember this one
65: I could totally rate this higher, but I have a huge bias for disco so I understand my bias here. Insanely groovy song.
60: AYY YOO THIS SHIT FUNKY. SHY BANDIT GOES HARD BRO IS SPITTING BARS.
59: No capm Bowser's SPM Battle Feels like it could singlehandedly take the reigns of a final boss theme with only a minimal amount of changes. This goes hard and even tho its silly in a paper mario kind of way, it feels perfectly in-character for bowser and genuinely makes him feel like a threat
58: Weak song for a weak boss. I just don't feel any weight to this boss at all and I'd gladly listen to so many songs rated lower before this one
57: So perfectly full of evil magic mischief. The Shadow Sirens Theme is the perfect song for villians of uncertain background with weird patterns, a disfunctional alliance, and an unsupportive sister who won't stop yapping. I especially love the key change in the second helf. It really sticks the landing, escalating the weird melody of first half steps up. Probably deserves a mid 40 if I had to estimate
51: I was shocked at first, but then I remembered, yeah this song isn't the craziest. It feels almost decisive between wanting to be both pirate-y and ghostly. I'll never forget just how powerfully this theme hits during the standoff against the X-nauts, but the part of it that relevant during the actual boss fight feels slow-paced and way too focused on being spooky to really live upto the height of that intro
48: TTYD Bowser Perfectly encapsulates the mood of every single time you fight him. In a frantic ambush right where you feel least prepared to handle him. Its a unique vibe that couldn't fit the setting better!
39: An overall solid train theme. I think Smorg has both higher highs and lower lows but this is definitely solid and this this one does make the overall stronger piece
38: I.. forget this song exists... Closing Battle, in true SPM fashion, completely lands with what it does have to work with, but otherwise makes up a song I never find myself thinking about. I feel like its not too heavy of a stretch to throw this one all the way back in the same general area that Grodus's theme lands (tho I agree that this one is a good 5-10 entries better).
33: TTYD's battle theme slaps. Simple as that. Such a fun, upbeat and funky version of the mario Leitmotifs we've heard so many times and feels like the perfect twist on all of it in much the same way that TTYD is. I'd possibly have ranked it higher, but we'll see what lies ahead of it
30: DAMN THIS SONG GOES HARD. Feels like it has spanish influences and for a desert track that feels really fitting and welcome. Reminds me a lot about madrid drive from mk8dx with how much tension that guitar makes me feel
28: Oh wow I'd have never guesed that Roy of all characters could ever have such a complicated rich battle theme. This may even end up being a top 10 for me (look I'm a sucker fast tempos)
27: I'm sorry.... I just don't get this Hole Punch's theme... I kinda already have a hard time taking Origami King's bosses seriously and nothing about this song speaks to me in a disco-y way. I could only put this one up at like 70, it sounds pleasant, but I just can't get down with this one

12: For everything the shadow Queen's theme does, I'm a little sad to see it outside of top 10. Its incredibly grandiose and a welcome tone change from the rest of TTYD that is always a little goofy and that really serious and intense nature of this song makes it stick out for all the right reasons while still not feeling out of place for a paper mario game
8: Pyro03333s of the world be damned, this song is THRIVES on its tension and its callback to the theme that acompanies Mimi's transformation for the first time is something that one simply does not forget
7: Paper Mario 64's soundfont and/or style just fails to emerse me. Idk what it is, but this particular sound font just feels.. flacid to me. I'd be curious to hear what this composition sounded like with some different instruments, but I otherwise just feel like this theme is really basic
5: Koopa bros are one of the few songs I think I _get_ all the love for in the 64 OST. Idr have a whole lot to say beyond that. These bros are rad as hell and their theme fits that in every way

But yeah this might just be my favorite theme in the whole series. The slow buildup, the slowly increasing intensity, and finally that KILLER 10/10 drop. What's more the slight bit of unease after the climax selling all the more that something still isn't right before it loops back on itself. I'm happy to see it recognized as the masterpiece it is, but MAN 4th just feels low

I think a lot of your points can be viewed as comments on whether the song fits the boss (e.g. 95, 57, 12, 5), and I strongly agree with many of them. I think the Lord Crump theme and the Shadow Sirens theme are both heavily underrated, primarily on the basis that they fit the boss really well.
That's also why I can't really enjoy the Origami King ones. I'll admit I haven't played it yet, but the idea of stationery bosses is just too bizarre to take seriously. For example, Mimi is a fictional _character,_ and I have no prior "context" for her. So it's not hard for me to decide "she's a threat". Scissors are an inanimate object. My prior context for them is "this is not threatening, this is a pair of scissors, they will not attack me".
I still feel like SPM's Closing Battle theme was underrated, but I'm heavily biased, since the story really resonated with me for some reason.
Also, one specific thing - Jr. Troopa's theme was such wasted potential. It would've been cooler if, each time you fought him, they added a new instrument and tweaked the theme a bit to make it more threatening. He's practically stalking Mario because Mario trespassed on his playground - it totally makes sense that he's just a weak goofball to start with. But he learns to fly, gets a spike, swims across an ocean _twice,_ and learns magic as revenge. Right before you'd rematch with the (more powerful) Koopa Bros he just comes in and OHKOs them. Making him seem more threatening (using the theme) would be really cool!

@@bane2201 Scissors is an inanimate object brought to life that toys with you in horrifying ways, like the cutout soldiers and the buzzy beetle made of peoples faces, and treats the first phase of the fight like it’s playing with it’s food, which is you, only for the sheath to come off and the real danger of the scenario to become apparent as you are now facing something that was specifically designed to be able to destroy you in mere seconds.
Origami king is such an underrated game. The music is fantastic (best of the paper mario games imo) and the battle system isnt that bad. Anyway, great video!!
I am VERY happy with the placement of the Koopa Bros. That one main instrument that plays through the song that sort of sounds like "Bat-man!" is so awesome. I dont know if its synth or key, but its AWESOME.
Paper 64 is such an overlooked game in the series, which is upsetting due to this theme being a BANGER. I'm happy to see your not one of those who overlook it, lol..
Not just that, but as an Origami King Simp, Stapler and Scissors theme are AWESOME, so Im happy they scored so high.
