  • No tea, shortly followed by getting on the wrong train. Is there a connection between these two things? Back on track at Worksop, and time for some light reading followed by a ride on brand new Pacer. Just time for a visit at another brand new station before pushing on to Peartree.
View the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations....
ROUTE: Spondon, Derby, Nottingham, Worksop, Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby, Willington, Tutbury & Hatton, Longport, Peartree.

All The Stations I believe so about the Hereford line. Are you going to do the penistone. 144012 is the best pacer and that's one u travelled on but the pacer you went on is the most unreliable pacer is the updated one. It's top speed is 75mph but only can do 50mph max

Up until this point in the series I was just caught up in Geoff's enthusiasm and knowledge of railway technology and infrastructure, and Vicki's joie de vivre, but the start of this episode made me realise what hard work this project was, especially until tea could be found. And that reminds me why I weaned myself off caffeine - that early morning feeling, the headache, that's caffeine withdrawal and it's very unpleasant. Well done for carrying on and still smiling about it.

Can't believe I never saw you at Longport Geoff! My local station, commute daily from there to Manchester lol. (One of the most annoying places to commute to, with only two direct trains to Manchester in the morning and no direct trains back, even though the Northern services stop at every stop but there during the afternoons and evenings. Glad to see it get a mention! :)

    • @haywoodbadman10
      @haywoodbadman10 7 років тому +1

Following on from that, I've asked the conductors on the Northern stopper service before and they were never told why Longport's service was cancelled aside from the two in the morning, as it used to receive a full Northern rail service to Manchester. But annoying having a half an hour wait at Stoke everyday for the East Midlands train on my way home lol

I have been watching all your videos out of order for the last several weeks and VIA Rail (Canada’s National Rail Service) acquired several trainsets of the unused Dreamliner from the UK a few years ago to complement their aging fleet (most rolling stock is 20-40 years old). Seeing those on a North American line with platforms that are not raised to the same height as the doors is awkward.
VIA is also embarking on an ambitious modernization program that has them buying bi modal sets from Siemens for the Quebec City - Windsor Corridor and eventually cross country trips, creating their own electric right-of-ways to avoid the freights (which tie up timetables due to the length and frequency on the mainlines.
Would love to have you and Vicki(y) come across the pond and take a look at the Corridor service and the GO Train service and the Montreal area

An interesting, yet tedious little piece of information for you all to ignore.
After passing northbound through Newstead, the “ Robin Hood Line “ goes through a short tunnel under a small hill. This, believe it or not, is part of a range of hills called “The Robin Hood Hills“. At the time of when the line re-opening was being planned, some marketing wonk made the connection between the medieval thief/robber/folk hero of that name and the range of hill through which the line passes.
In fact, on some really old maps, there is a mark denoting the site of one of the many larders of Robin Hood.
When transposed onto a modern map, the larder would be directly above the tunnel.

Another interesting little piece of information for you all, this time with regards to Langwith-Whaley Thorns station.

The reason why Peartree has a limited service of Peak Hour only trains is because it was on the Derby - Sinfin branch which is where the Rolls Royce factory can be found. The branch line opened in 1978 and there were only four trains a day on the Derby - Sinfin branch and these trains were not conveniently timed for workers at the Rolls Royce factory.

Worksop, my home town! The Robin Hood line was a (fairly) recent addition in the late 90's when they reinstated passenger services between Worksop and Nottingham, and the whole area has long been associated with Robin Hood (Major Oak, his supposed hiding tree, is only a few miles down the road in Edwinstowe). Worksop was also the setting for the children's TV show Maid Marian and her Merry Men! Interesting to see you mention the High Marnham test track, I was in the area the other week when I cycled down to see Fledborough viaduct, which the High Marnham track used to cross when it was still a passenger line to Lincoln. It's an impressive structure that is now part of the national cycle network.

I also once took the wrong train. We had a tight connection from a rail replacement, but I didn't know there was an amended timetable because of the maintenance works (that also caused the rail replacement bus to run) and just hopped on the only train that was in the station. And that was obviously the wrong one. The conductor told us to alight at the next stop and get the next train back, which we did. But to defend myself, it was in the Czech Republic and I don't speak Czech. I don't know if Derbyshire English is so different from London English, but who knows... :P

For all the Pacer lovers/haters out there. As many may well know, they were based on the same bodywork as the Leyland National bus and used newly developed jig manufacturing techniques on a production line assembly. Now, things have gone full circle and there is a company taking old Pacers, refurbishing the bodies, adding an electric drivetrain and turning them into..... BUSES! Crazy but true. It also goes to demonstrate the robustness and longevity of the Pacer, which really is the Marmite of the train world. You could say they are a little like the train equivalent of the Routemaster bus.

Yeah I saw that, In think Vivarail were able to identify the source of the fire and it was due to a maintenance error or something. So I don't see why the program of replacement wouldn't continue, but who knows...

I'm sure it will continue, Mr Shooter is a savvy individual and he's got a lot of money tied up in the project. They've got a year or two to play with though so there's plenty of time.

Cameron Amoils Northern trains are being replaced with new stock built by CAF in Spain. The leasing companies weren't prepared to adapt all their pacers to the new disability requirements in 2020.

GWR and ArrivaTW only have a few pacers each and they are owned by a different rolling stock company that owns the Northern ones.

They'll be back that way, there's Meadowhall for the two difference services to Leeds and the trains to Doncaster. They'll also be popping back to visit Dore & Totley and the Hope Valley. Sheffield could have done with a little more, there are two Pumpkins for tea on the platforms!

GNR is the correct answer for the UK in 1879, but that made me wonder who actually first came up with the idea, which was not that easy. It would seem to be the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad (eventually a component of the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad) in 1862.

Derby became a city in 1976, (I was 4, I only know the following learning retrospectively), when Derby swallowed up Spondon I believe, giving Derby the more than 250,000 population requirement for city status. I bought a second hand Amstrad 464 computer in Spondon.... Circa.... 1997......

I know a million people have already commented, but the Welsh train your thinking about is explained here: www.nwrail.org.uk/nwgoods.htm
It is actually quite interesting: It's called "Y Gerallt Gymro" and was introduced for the Welsh MPs who live in Holyhead and work in Cardiff. They don't use it that much (I hear), but it makes for a very interesting loco-hauled journey across Wales. I'm planning a trip on it in July - hunting out the remaining loco-hauled trains in Britain! I can't wait!

"It's absolutely..." (pauses long enough for everyone to think "pissing down") "... raining." I don't know why--probably because on the inside I still am and always will be 12--but I love a well-executed crypto-profanity in a family-friendly show. :)

So will you be having a special celebration at station 1282 - marking the half way mark? Looks like you aren't too far off!
Enjoying the series very much - it's a great idea for a project. I grew up in the UK and travelled by train a fair bit (looks like you've still got to do my original home station of Bridgwater in Somerset); but live in Sydney these days though.
Have you got many more stations you can do in day trips from home? Or is it all now multiple days away?

Watching the videos waiting for either a shot if Spondon (where I grew up) or Skipton (where I live now). First one ticked off I guess...i just hope you got to enjoy the "Spondon Pong" whilst waiting for the train. There is a quaint castle awaiting in Skipton!

I think that they gave the Nottingham - Mansfield - Worksop line the "Robin Hood Line" name mainly because it originates in Nottingham and passes not too far away from the nature reserve historically known as "Sherwood Forest."
It's one of Beeching's "reversals", becoming freight only in the sixties, leaving Mansfield without a train service. It was reopened in stages as recently as 1993-95, first to Newstead, then to Mansfield Woodhouse, then to Worksop.

Is it bad that I'm a wee bit excited to see you come up North? Glasgow can be a bastard to get round all the stations as no service goes to them all (as far as I'm aware). To get from my local station to another just a mile away takes two changes! Pity you won't be stopping at (the ambiguously named!) High Street station, you get the best bacon butties in town from there.

    The upgraded/accessible Pacer sounded interesting.
Do you have anyone that knows the details about who did the exemplar upgrade, exactly what they changed, and how much it would cost to make sure that all the Pacers (...sorry - All The Pacers) were converted to be wheelchair compliant, etc?
