That's Worcester's one-way system for you. The coach could not continue westerly down Lowesmoor as that route is restricted so had to turn south, at Aldi, towards St. Martins Gate, passing Asda, before reaching the City Walls Road and turning north again. Given the state of the city's traffic it is often quicker to walk, especially in 'rush hour'. The route does not pass the Cathedral.
Always nice to see some familiar places :) I came back back home to Belgium from Chester via this windy route, via Hereford, Great Malvern, Worcester and Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone. There are some great sights to see. Didn't make it to the city centre in Hereford, unfortunately, but I did in Worcester. Great Britain is littered with historic cities...

RE: "Bicester Village Station" well as far as a few of us locals are concerned it's still called Bicester Town Station as it was for so many years. Bicester is not a village but a Town ! Yes you are right - it's all car park for the shopping centre. We do in fact have a real high street called Sheep Street with shops where you can buy things for a pound.
Eeeugh the plague of problems at Worcester in 2017, I was commuting to Birmingham then and there was literally not a day when there was no delay, short form or cancellation, the bad days of London Midland. At Shrub Hill the signal gantry at the Birmingham end is magnificent and dates back to Victorian times. Great Malvern station is glorious and has a secret exit. Hereford again is a magnificent station, the second built in the City and has a little used Platform 4. Also if you stayed at the Travelodge, then that was then site of the other Hereford station.
This is like the walk between the two Yeovil stations. which of course doesn't have a connecting train at weekends...Which makes trips from Bristol to Lyme Regis that bit more challenging.
Yay happy 50 percent. Geoff, Vicki it is always a pleasure to watch your updates. You both bring an excitement to travelling by train. This summer we are holidaying in the west county and have decided to go by train. Looking forward to my second journey on a HST 😁 I have purchased one of your "All the stations" green T-shirts looking forward to wearing it on Holiday. Darren
Used to walk past shrub hill all the time, dad worked next to the station, and I walked 5 minutes to where I worked. Missed a lot of stations on this route like moreton on marsh, Evesham etc. Often used to do Worcester moreton, also moreton to Paddington
Rail Travel in Worcester is always hell, they've got perpetual signal problems at Forgate, and there's something wrong with those points at Shrub Hill. And of course London Midlands is pretty naff, never enough coaches, especially on the peak time trains from Hereford to New Street, where there usually a good 100 college students from Hereford Sixth Form who have to sit on the floor.
...and nobody mentioned, except me (just some Canadian guy living in Trieste, Italy...), that you went through the Great Malvern station where they shot some scenes for the 70's BBC series Survivors. We visited that station and other Survivors' sites back in 2009 and a few more in recent years as well. Yes, we took pictures of the station.
I have been to the Oxford station! I've never been on a more crowded train than Oxford to London in July 2012. As an American used to having trains to himself off peak(septa) it was quite the culture shock.
Sorry to be a car geek inamongst all the railway enthusiasts, but did anyone else spot the Triumph Stag convertible in the Hereford station car park at the end (15:45)?! Wow, what a day!
Bicester Village used to be called Bicester Town, a one platform station that marked the end of the line for passenger services that used to be serviced by a two car Turbo with First Great Western. The trip used to take about 25 minutes and only stopped at Islip.
Ahh, I remember when it was NSE Class 121s, before Islip was reopened, and it was a long walk from the station to any non-residential properties. I see from the video that the double-tracking has been restored - how far towards Calvert have they taken the double-tracking?
I think this story made one of the railway magazines a few years ago, a discarded seat reservation ticket found on the ground somewhere - Worcester Foregate Street to Worcester Shrub Hill, yes really !!
Don't know what the trouble with the points would have been but continuous welded rail, although providing a much smoother ride, makes the tracks much more vulnerable to buckling than the old fish plate jointed short sections of rail. The tendency to sideways buckling is combated by heaping the ballast at the ends of the sleepers to provide resistance to sideways movement. If that heaping up is reduced, possibly because of old ballast spreading or work adjacent to the track, the resistance is reduced. This often leads to the imposition of speed limits in hot weather (so a derailment is less serious). At worst, major track buckling can occur and stop trains entirely.
Thanks for the info. Do the rails 'unbuckle' straight again when the whether cools, and the sleepers get dragged back into place by thermal contraction of the rails, or does this have to be sorted out manually when it happens? And the range of temperatures in the UK is well short of what some parts of the world experience especially in the interior of continents. Do these places not use continuous welded rail or is some different solution used? I would guess high speed lines especially need continuous rails, but how do they avoid buckling in the heat? Just from better piling up of ballast?
@@cephalopod7300 Even if the rails straighten out a bit when it cools, there is no guarantee that this would be adequate. Also, the fact that they buckled means that the ballast needed to be topped up so re-alignment and more ballast is required. These days this is all handled by large machines operating overnight. As for other countries; you're right in identifying temperature range as the issue, not just high (or low) extremes. I don't have experience of what's done. I have seen rails painted white but I doubt that has much effect. I have travelled on the suburban railway in Yangon. Rails were all over the place, the trains travel slowly.

The Railway Magazine reported on the opening of the Bicester Chord saying that it was the first brand new route between London and another UK major city since 1899 when the Great Central opened. The following month they actually had an entry in the 'Corrections and Clarifications' section about the article, because apparently they'd incorrectly said that Oxford would be unique in having trains to London departing in both directions, when Edinburgh also does, as do quite a few places in Kent
I used to live a few minutes from Great Malvern station and have spent more time than I wish to remember on the station. It is a lovely station though. I now live in Herefordshire and Hereford is my local station, not a patch on Great Malvern though!

I live in Melbourne Victoria Australia, and it's not uncommon to have 35-40 degree days during summer, but more uncommon are days from 40-45 degrees, and to top all that we did have a 4 day streak in 2009 where temperatures reached 45-47 degrees. I was on a train between Paddington and Newton Abbot and when we got to Castle Carry the train had to stop because the tracks were to hot so I know how I feel.
It's funny in france we have a similar thing like the Bicester Village thing, they call it Vallée Village, its full of luxe brands and such, they have a shuttle that goes from the Champs Elysée to that village, which is close to Disneyland. You can get to it by the RER A at the Val D'Europe station (Which is a big mall)
Does anyone know if there is a sequential list or map that shows the route, with all the reversals and multiple visits to the same stations? The 58 vids gives one a general impression of what went on, but necessarily leaves much out.

Congratulations on reaching Half Way There Day at Shipton-Under-Wychwood! It's all North from here! :D
Love your videos there great, they've changed the outside area of Hereford train station with new buildings and a transport hub which is still being done
It is a gorgeous view, the fact your'e still together after so many stations is amazing, well done.
Now, forget #allthecastles, how about #allthehotels?
Ah yes replacement bus from Worcester Shrub Hill, On return to Bristol from Stratford upon Avon with a group of 20 odd spaniards in tow. They laid a special bus on for us to Cheltenham Spa where we got a train back to Bristol. (we used a bus to get from Evesham to Stratford as of course the line was closed in the 60's)
only time I've ever been to Hereford is when I passed thru recently on a rail replacement bus so I was too annoyed to look at its beauty
45 people have checked trainline today for Appleford to Cuham! Not.as difficult as Geoff made out?
I want that British Rail/National Rail Reverse Arrows Flag at 13:47 from Malvern Link!
In Canada our local GO Trains get delayed due to FROZEN SWITCHES!. Oh, congrats on 50 %
12:24. I was in Worcester. :-)
EYYY!!! LOCAL TO ME!! Well Done on 50% too and this has got to be the best video yet!!
I live in Melbourne Victoria Australia, and it's not uncommon to have 35-40 degree days during summer, but more uncommon are days from 40-45 degrees, and to top all that we did have a 4 day streak in 2009 where temperatures reached 45-47 degrees. Yes, Victorians do get these heat issues and our trains do have problems in this heat also.
I live in Worcester and I’ve never looked in the Victorian waiting room at shrub hill
Have you had the chance to check it out since?
@@cephalopod7300 I have checked it out but sadly I do not live in Worcester anymore

I had to get a coach to Hereford from Newport or somewhere, I really cant remember, wasn't a fun trip home from Swansea
Love the Shrub Hill waiting room!
That giggle at the end was adorable
You guys pack very light!
To walk between those two awkward stations takes 65 mins so the best train is likely to be the walking express
Have you herd of the new plans to refurbish Oxford Station?
They have! Their Oxford guide told them (me :-)) [or to be more correct, I told Vicki, Geoff was in Hanborough!]
Honestly, if you ever want to go from London Paddington to Hereford, there's a direct service. Also, considering I get the Hereford-Birmingham train twice a day, I can confirm: it is always delayed. You get over it.
8m15s 8m20s Please tell me that you lined up BOTH camera shots on purpose. (the yellow platform line and platform edge with an extension to the rail lines).
Cheers
Chris
I was on a train between Paddington and Newton Abbot and when we got to Castle Carry the train had to stop because the tracks were to hot so I know how I feel.
You were on the Telly!! 😀
Ah, Culham! I know that area of Oxfordshire well.
"...try to take a train between Appleford and Culham". The trains I catch everyday do that :) 07.21 Oxford to Didcot Parkway and 16.59 Didcot Parkway to Oxford
