    Seeing Geoff on the floor and Vicky with the wheelbarrow actually moved me to tears. I'm a massive oasis fan!!! You should get a still of that and frame it :-)

      I'm not even a big Oasis fan, but seeing them get so excited about being able to re-create the record cover was just delightful.

      As someone who never really into English-language songs before, this is where I discovered Oasis.

    I think - a month in - this project has now gotten fully into its stride: relaxed on-camera presence with its good mix of whimsy, humor and charm. This, and good editing, have brought it all together: a good natured paean to the UK's rail infrastructure, with the harder underlying message that it's something to be valued (and worthy of renaissance.)

    Stowage : a place where you put things that you may need to access quickly
    Storage : a place where you put things that are not needed so quickly

      Or to put it another way, stowage would be somewhere you stow something, not store it.

    Geoff's glee at 12:48 was so infectious. I'm glad that, a month in, you're still just as excited about this project as when you started. It just wouldn't be the same with that genuine enthusiasm.

    So UA-cam recommended your channel this week and now going all your videos. Absolutely loving the way you bring to life the little idiosyncrasies we casually take for granted not just on the trains, stations and railway but just life in general. Such a cool brilliant adventure. Can we come up to the Highlands to see you arrive at your final station?

    This channel is a great example of what happens when you step outside your door. Yes, there's a plan. Yes, there's skill involved. But the best moments of this channel happen simply because you were there. I love travel, and trains and seeing people out there enjoying life. This is what makes youtube so great - too bad the "suits" don't get it on "regular" TV.

    I read about you both in yesterday's online Guardian Australia 12/06/2017, and your All Stations expedition. The article also mentioned Michael Portillo's journeys, which I watch on SBS. Yours have the huge advantage of a total absence of Portillo pomposity. Keep up your cheerfulness.

    Cromford is one of my sponsored stations, it is one of my favourite areas in the UK and I used to love going on holiday to there. I agree with the train ride between Derby and there being beautiful, I haven't been on the train to Matlock Bath but I have walked along the river to there.

      I can only recommend strongly to use those privileges, they are worth a ton, and the UK is a great country to tour by train, there's some great scenery outside of the window, lively cities, quaint (yes!) villages... And if you have them, use those privileges on the continent as well, they're great. A Belgian railwayman.

      Near Chester Cathedral (a bit further on foot from the station), there is a staircase of locks on an old canal, which goes under a railway. Unfortunately, when we were there, no trains ran over that line because of engineering...

      Rolleston didn't used to be a nothing station. It was once known as Rolleston Junction and you changed there for trains to Southwell and Mansfield, albeit a long time ago. The locks are on the River Trent, that flows past the castle, Hence it being called Newark-on-Trent.

    My grandparents used to live not far from Matlock. The park there has a boating lake with little motor boats. 10-year-old me was very happy.
    Also, Whatstandwell no fall down.
    EDIT: Oh, and something that may be of slightly more interest to this audience; the park also has a narrow-gauge railway that runs in a straight line for maybe 200 yards, and then reverses back to the start again. Once again, 10-year-old me was thrilled.

I rewound and realised that she had got on the train with you at 4:22 and also got off at Lincoln (4:57). Norbiton Flyer That was your 'hack and slash' period, right? In the States (and Canada), we got it slowly after Amtrak Day (1 May 1971). The public purpose of Amtrak was to divest money-losing passenger operations from the railroads and nationalize services, but secretly, to eventually shut down all passenger services and be rid of them. Fortunately, they haven't killed all the trains, but compared to what was running on Amtrak Day, today's services are a shadow of what once was, to include on-board services. Consider, if this series were done in the States, Geoff and Vicki would have covered the entire country and be finished already.

    • @barvdw
      @barvdw 7 років тому +1

      If you compare to what had been running before the advent of Amtrak, there was even more axed before than after. I'm reading 'When The Railroad Leaves Town' as my bedtime story, and the number of states that had not one, but multiple lines through them, which have no Amtrak service at all any more, is just baffling.
      Compared to that, the UK isn't doing too bad, I'd say, yes, Beeching has been a little bit too enthusiastically trimming stations and lines, but the network it still possesses is nothing to sneeze at, and often, service levels aren't that bad either, on the contrary, many are better than they have been for years.

    I really enjoy watching "All The Stations". The videos are always well made, informative, and entertaining. Was just wondering to myself how long it would take to do an "All The Stations", if all the lines and stations closed by Dr, Beeching where still in existence?
    A good deal longer that's for sure.
    Now there's a challenge, for someone out there with a fetish for old railway timetables to work out the answer!!!

    • @hamstreet658
      @hamstreet658 7 років тому

      The first phase of Beeching cuts was around 55% of stations and 30% of route miles. I'd hazard a guess that before the second and first cuts the project would have taken around 24 weeks.

    Best video yet, maybe because you have to been to my favourite places when I was a child, and also where I grew up. Vicki is right though, Lincolnshire needs more railways. My nearest station growing up was Grantham, and to go and see my friends in nearby towns I would have to get two or three trains just to go 20 miles or so, plus having to drive to Grantham from my village, so it is easier to drive, or get buses.

    While in Cromford did you have time to explore the High Peak railway inclines? If not, it's definitely worth going back. There's a catch-pit at the bottom with the remains of a steam-era 10-ton coal wagon that ran away down the 1-mile 1:8(?) rope incline and reached 140mph+ when the rope broke. Also a very nice walk along the old railway formation to Wirksworth where you can travel on the heritage line back to Duffield.

      Racing Stripe A/V It's not about how any trains there are. It's calculated on the number of people boarding/alighting at each station.

    I've enjoyed all the videos so far, but that was one of the best. I have to say, Matlock Bath and the Heights of Abraham look like good places to visit. Keep up the good work. BTW it was good to see you two featured in The Guardian (www.theguardian.com/uk-news/shortcuts/2017/jun/12/meet-couple-visiting-every-railway-station-britain).

    Here in Devon we have so many stations which people hardly ever use (can't see why they're open myself)

    Quite weak to take the cable car up to the Heights of Abraham. I walked all the way up (and even higher than that) earlier this year. :-)

    • @cephalopod7300
      @cephalopod7300 3 роки тому

      It's a reference to Emirates Air Line, the cable car over the Thames in the Docklands of London, which is integrated into the public transport system but doesn't get huge numbers of passengers.
