It's Called Manchester Air - Episode 35, Day 66 - Chester to Liverpool
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 лис 2024
- It's Tuesday 11th July, it's Day 66, and we've hit the north! Manchester, Liverpool, and all the places around, there's loads of stations to do here, so let's get on with it and do them!
Whilst in the area, we also catch up with Emma from local Transport App based company Mapway!
Mapway - The world’s number one in public transport apps. Have a look at their website at: www.mapway.com/
If you want to contact Mapway about work experience and apprenticeship possibilities, email them at: support@mapway.com
You can also download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.c... (other stores are available....)
Geoff and Vicki are visiting ALL 2,563 national railway stations in Britain - view the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations....
ROUTE: Chester - Navigation Road - Manchester Piccadilly - Manchester Airport - Styal - Handforth - Alderley Edge - Crewe - Liverpool Lime Street
Hi Geoff & Vicki, I live in Crewe and Volunteer at the Heritage Centre. I didn't realise that no-one had contacted you about visiting the centre, I had assumed that someone would have tried to get in touch, but it seems not! The entrance to the Heritage Centre is about another 5 mins down the road from where Vicki was, the entrance is through Tesco's car park. If you would like to come back some day, please get in touch - I would be happy to pick you up and take you to the centre. The APT is currently being repainted and other exhibits are being restored for the 30th Anniversary of the opening of CHC on 22nd & 23rd July. We'd love to see you.
All The Stations I just wanted to make sure you'd seen this! :)
Another amazing video! I cant imagine the withdrawal symptons everyone will get once the journey is completed.
They could always come and do All The Stations Australia :)
Considering the distances involved, and the cost of the Indian Pacific and Ghan, I get the feeling that would be a very expensive endeavour. Would watch the hell out of it though!
Dylan Plant now that would be quick🤔

If you use Reddit, feel free to check out the unofficial AllTheStations subreddit at reddit.com/r/AllTheStations!
TopTechTips thanks, since it's not part of official ATS media i want to make myself clear that it's not run by them.
I WANT TO HEAR GEOFFs MUSING IN FULL. I MUST KNOW THE FULL COFFEE/TEA SITUATION IN EVERY STATION!
I was disappointed when it kept fading out at the interesting bits. Maybe the full segment will appear on Geoff's channel.
adotswan I hope so
James Arthur - Ding! Tea counter required
I have been inspired by ATS and am about to embark on an All the Costas expedition ... However I fear caffeine poisoning might set in around the end of the first week :-)
@@malcolmelliott1876 ⛧⛥😅
Acton Bridge is weird it is the only station in the north of England to be managed by London Midland. It is also the only station outside of London with the name Acton!
thanks Geoff for introducing me to such an amazing company I did work experience there and I really enjoyed it
As for where the North/South border is, I believe one Jay Foreman has a video about that.
APT - a train that failed because the press got drunk the night before and ended up blaming their hangovers on the tilting.
lcmortensen is that legit
dan b kind of is. And all the stupid politics in BR at the time. Pity. Does that APT ever run or is it just an exhibit? I recall seeing it on a test run when I were a lad. Very impressive.
Some people say the tilting mechanism worked too well in that it basically completely cancelled lateral forces. So you're eyes saw you going round a corner but you didn't feel it, and that discrepancy caused nausea for many people. The tilting mechanism on the pendolino is derived from the APT, but it doesn't tilt quite as much, so there is still a small amount of lateral force so you still feel like you're going round a curve.
dan b hehe,I Guess The Train Was Always Drunk
Maybe the Class 390 was 1 degree less drunk!
And little did we know how infamous Handforth would become in the future...
READ THE TIMETABLE! READ IT AND UNDERSTAND IT!
Welcome to the north, what London railway would of looked liked in the 1970's.
I do enjoy seeing all these quaint English towns :)
I love how you include snippets of Geofftech's 20 minute talk, as well as keeping the lense-cleaning bit, and also (nearly every time) how Geoff can't start or continue talking because of the PA's. :))
Loved the APT through a bush thorough a bird through a tree 😂🤣
Can we have Geoffs musings as a bonus video? Or maybe as a series
I am relatively recent big fan of Manchester (the city, not any of the football teams). It used to be grim, bloody grim, but these days, it's a wonderful vibrant city.
Crewe, if I am correct in thinking used to be a major station for changing trains.
If I think rightly still is for many directions.
Yes, still is. Lots of connections there, making it a station busier and more significant than you'd expect from the size of the town.
We've made it to Alderley Edge which is apparently a very posh part of Cheshire.
*shows a Waitrose*
Britain defined!
North of Manchester they have Booth's, which makes Waitrose look positively shabby
Viki: Who are we?
Geoff: points at self Viki points at Viki and Geoff
Can't believe you went through Goostrey 9:27 and didn't get any shots of the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope!!! :)
Can I get a bank account there!
5 mins later... 10 mins later... priceless. Geoff and Vicky are lovely, and their humour is just spot on. I missed all of this while it was happening, I'm rather enjoying the binge watch.
fewer Waitrose north of Manchester / Leeds but then there are Booth's, the Waitrose of the North.
Manchester Air - thick, noxious, opaque smog
I got an Avanti train from Crewe to Euston last month - and I swear to god that pipe/pillar at 11:15 was still dripping then. 3 years and no repair works... welcome to the North's railways!!
I love the way the Class 323 sounds when accelerating.
Suppose you hear it all the time.... You are such a lovely couple. Who would not want to experience what you show us.
Woo! Pacer shot! Am I the only rail enthusiast in the world who actually really rather likes Pacers?
Also, a shame y'all didn't have time to check out Chester. That's where I was based on that Study Abroad I mentioned a video or two ago. Nice little city, very pretty. Gorgeous cathedral, nice high street, the river is lovely, and I got a real kick out of using the city wall as a short cut to the shops.
Ive just discovered this series after folllowing Geoff. Loving the series and its great to watch chilling over a beer! Northwich station is very different now, as the roof collapsed a couple of years ago! That made the news too!
The Destination kit on the Class 319 Northern units is TrainFX and the reason why 'Manchester Air' was shown is due to the version of the station names used on the system - There's a long name which would show Manchester Airport and then a Short version 'Manchester Air' - they'll be a number of these quirks as you travel around the Northern network where TrainFX kit is installed class 15x too
What happened to the Thomas the Tank engine annoucement ?????
So yer telling me it took 20 minutes to make the journey between Goostrey and Holmes Chapel - I can believe that Geoff can go on about tea and providors of tea like beverages for a lot longer than 20 minutes... on a clear day you can see those 2 stations from each other - the journey takes about 3 minutes - on a slow day.
Great video as usual.
Great to see Navigation Road again; the station by home, until I moved to London.
Strange to see some old Thameslink trains at Manchester Air(port)
sudo apt install advanced-passenger-trains 😉
sudo apt-get remove advanced-passenger-trains

R.I.P Advanced Passenger Train (APT) 1972-1986

Such a shame that it never worked out but other high speed trains were developed from the project
Somewhere in Chester station is a little Penguin key ring I bought from the zoo on a school trip, circa 1980, and lost before I got on the chartered train back to Lincoln. If anyone finds it, let me know.
That’s my local station (navigation road I live about 10 mins walk away) I met you at kings cross and we got a photo together, I’m a huge fan and it was great to meet you and so glad you have visited my local station
Navigation Road has been single platform train, single platform tram since Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992. Birkbeck went that way with London Tramlink in 2000. I've visited both :)
I live on the Metrolink
I can't wait for them to visit Huddesfield. I hope they have time to meet Felix!
Missed my home town out, Sandbach - not a lot to see near the station though in any case as the town centre is some distance away.
Really love how beautiful and well kept many of the British stations are.
Here in Germany, especially smaller stations (like my local one) are in very bad shape with destroyed shelters, graffiti, vomit and pee all over the place. On newer stations, they don't even install benches anymore, because they would be destroyed after a few days anyway...
Scheuner
That is not my experience of Germany. It is a very clean country and much cleaner than the UK.

When I flew into Manchester I needed to get to Birmingham so... I waited a few hours and caught the very cheap bus to Heathrow (stops in Birmingham) because the train was too expensive. Shocked at how good the bus was...
3:01 When you say what time it is and the people around you MUST check their watch/phone to double check they're within a few minutes of yours.
And its Emma from mapway you see a few seconds later.
yes please come back to the Crewe Heritage Centre i work there i would love to meet you both open Saturday and sunday im from Liverpool
Hopefully you'll get time to sample coffee and more at The Coffee Station at Hebden Bridge.
Superb video. Vicki's plea of 'but I want to see more art' was really sweet. Nope, you've got a train to catch. :-)
If you go to Kirkby there is a freight line on the Kirkby to Manchester going to the Knowsley freight terminal
Patrick killen
That freight branch will be off Merseyrail 3rd rail if Skelmesdale is put on Merseyrail, as proposed. Most likely they will use Merseyrail battery trains to Skem.
Hello Geoffa Vicky love the way you love trains just like me
Vicky you are so diplomatic!
Two costas in York Station, one in the old signal box
Perfect editing !
I went to Crewe on the train. The APT is at the Crewe heritage centre and it is a 15-20 minute walk from the station, right next to a huge tesco.
I can understand it isn't easy to find, but it is worth it if you can find it
I don't think was the APT Vicki found I think that Might have been the EWS/DB Locomotive Dump that they have around Crewe ETD one of the Class 90s has been there so long it has grown roots! Literally it has a Tree Growing out of it! LoL!
Yes the best city in the world. CHESTER! And you went through Delamere one of the prettiest places ever.
Are you going to go to the railway museum in York? it seem apt.
Did Vicki find the Platform 9 3/4 sign in the white-on-orange sign, in the style of a 1960s BR sign?
Just discovered this series and loving it! I used to live in the flats behind Chester station at 0:56
Thanks for stopping at Handforth, my grandmothers local station!
I still remember reading a class book in English at school, "The Weirdstone of Brisingamen," by Alan Garner, based around the Edge in Cheshire. Fantastic children's fantasy book, with a great wizard! I'm feeling nostalgic. :)
For North/South-Divide check out: MAP MEN by Jay Foreman and Mark Cooper-Jones as well as the Park Bench by Tom Scott and Matt Gray.
yup, we tweeted it several times.!
9 and 3/4 earings! Love it Vicki!
Crewe Station silly trivia. Presuming Vickie left via the main entrance and hence would have exited on the bridge. But what many don't realise is that its actually two bridges; you start on bridge 80 but once you pass the horse landing (downward sloping road) you're actually up on bridge 80A which cross the Manchester and Liverpool Independent lines.
So the bridges number plate is different at either end.
The boards say Manchester Air because that’s what only fits on the destination board at the front of the train
I wonder why they didn't call it Manchest. Air....
or Mcr Airport
How about Airy ManAirface?
I live a few towns over thank for this local video
Vicki is someone who is after my own heart. She thinks exactly along the same sort of lines as I would, as she goes in search of the APT.
we all love Handforth
Ha! Love the wacky bonus footage on this one! 😃👍
Brief glimpses of the Northwich end of the Middlewich line just before Northwich Station. Let's hope Geoff will be able to visit a new Middlewich Station before too long.
Alderney edge being posh is a understatement it’s beautiful and fully of rich people I don’t live far from it
What happened to days 57 to 65? Where is the North Wales line? The last episode claims to be Porthmadoc to Chester and the last thing we see is you leaving Llandudno Junction. What Happened to Colwyn Bay to Chester?
Milton Keynes Central has a Costa, albeit on the plaza near the entrance but that is close enough.
Another great video. Living in the south "The North" starts at Watford gap
From London. Used to go to a boarding school down the road from Delamere Station
I go there a lot
Did Manchester Airport - Piccadilly - Airport in October 18. Fine journey, but I have never so many railway staff before in my life, anywhere! The ticketing system was complicated and we had to be shown how to buy a ticket from a machine - oh, no, can't do that. You'll have to join that queue, I'm afraid... VERY NICE PEOPLE, though!!
Great acceleration sounds on the Class 323s
Lots of well looked after stations in Scotland Aberdour for example.
Yes you went past Gatley...were I lived until I moved to Holland ......
Nice video I like it
I love your comment
Surprised you didn't spot the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank! Or did I blink as you zoomed past?! 😁
Really enjoyed this video! cheers!
Another lovely video! Keep it up :)
Vicki the apt train is outside Crewe station at the heritage centre you could have got a taxi outside the station to Tesco's and there you would have got to the heritage centre and the apt train and you would have been able to board the apt as its open to the public
One of the classic North/South divide ways was How many Gregg sausage rolls you got for £1.00 - used to be 2 in the south but 3 in the north
Mapway are the Kings/Queens of the appmap world
Had never heard of them until I watched this. Nice bit of publicity for them. Might give their TubeMap app a try next time I'm in London.
I'd definitely recommend it - I use it any time I need a reference. The journey planner gives you quickest & easiest (less changes) routes.
Been using it for years now!
7:25 Handforth Parish Council?
Arriving in Styal!
Pace yourself, Pacers!
Sprint, Sprinters!
Derby station has a Costa! ☕
Alderley Edge used to be a great place to watch Woodford Air Show.
If chatting was an Olympic sport I think Geoff would be a gold medalist 😂
'Man. Airport' would make more sense if space is limited.
There's a Costa at Swansea station, Geoff
So you've both experienced Northern Trains..... Sorry about that...
Aww Chester is my home town ❤️
2:03 - I know that's "all the dialects", but it sounds like "all the Daleks" ;)
"what do we do?" "trains" - is it getting a bit much 😂😂😂
It is Geoff "Sir Humphrey" Marshall (10:00).
the only intresting thing in current times of scunthorpe is that the foundry (not so) shopping centre marks the geographic north south divide.
you won't have much fun if you have to stay for a bit in scunthorpe as their is bugger all to do apart from go to the cinema (their is also around 4 pound worlds/lands)
Hi Geoff and Vicki, Once again a great video. Unfortunately raining all day. 9 3/4 again. Geoff, its Railway station - we are not in the USA.
i know this is late but the reason why it said Manchester Air is because on some dot matrix's they shorten the names like sometimes on when i got to Liverpool it says "Manchester Ox Rd" on the dot matrix at my station
moving the picture was fun.
I use the Humber and connecting rivers as the border.. i.e. North of Humber Land... so I that is my definition.
Pacers No More
Surely you've been to Birmingham New Street a fair number of times? Or do you mean you actually got out and hung around there for a while waiting for a connecting train? I guess there are many lines into Birmingham New Street that don't terminate there and carry on through and out the other side?
