  • Abandoned F1 Track Nivelles Baulers Belgium 2023
In this Circuits of the past video we show you what's left of the abandoned race track of Nivelles in Belgium in 2023. We explore the lost track by car, by foot and by drone.
    About the Nivelles Circuit
The Nivelles-Baulers circuit opened it’s doors in 1971 as a safer alternative for Spa-Francorchamps. During it’s short excistence it hosted the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix twice, in 1972 and 1974. Both races were won by Emerson Fittipaldi.
However, after a lot of financial trouble the Nivelles circuit closed it’s doors in 1981. After the closure it was used for illegal racing.
In 1998, Herman Liesemeijer - the founder of the Circuits of the past website and UA-cam channel - visited the abandoned Nivelles circuit for the first time. He was just in time before the demolition started a year later.
His visits to the abandoned Nivelles circuit inspired Herman to start a website about lost race tracks in 2003. The name… Circuits of the past!
Today the old Nivelles circuit is a business park with the public road follows parts of the old track. Untill 2020 there was also a section of the track left for nature.
However, during his 2020 visit, Herman saw a lot of activity on the remained section. They are were clearing the remains of the old racing circuit in order to add this part to the business park. In 2023 Herman visited Nivelles again and explored what's left of the track...

It's nice to see that they have somewhat kept the layout of the old circuit.

Yes, that's because of the drainage system. It was easy to use the excisting system from the track.

Ayrton Senna competing. Micheal Schumacher spectating. That deserves a monument, but at least we have your videos

As a Dane I managed to look at races on the now abandoned "Roskilde Ring" for its last two years of existence, from 1966 to 68! We also had F1 races on this track, but before my time! It was a fantastic track in a hole in the middle of town, and mostly to be overlooked from all of the places around. Sadly it has now mostly been filled with buildings and it's hardly to be seen in the area any more.

Yes I know the old Roskilde Ring. In 2009 I visited the site. Here the article I wrote about it: www.circuitsofthepast.com/roskilde-ring/
A funny story: Dutch F1 reporter Olav Mol once interviewed Kevin Magussen and asked him what we should know about his hometown Roskilde. They didn't talked about the track. So I messaged Olav Mol and told him they forgot to mention the Roskilde Ring. Both didn't knew about it. So, Olav Mol told Kevin Magnussen and he also mentioned my website :)

Is it me or does the planned layout look like a heavily modified Barcelona?

Barcelona opened in 1991, Nivelles in 1971.

@@Circuitsofthepast I guess the designers of Barcelona wre inspired by the planned Nivelles layout then.

I don't thinks so. It may look on the map a bit similar, but it's totally different.
