at first I thought this was going to be just a regular (but fun) video on AVUS, but wow, I did NOT expect you to actually go there in person and show us the remnants of the unfinished South Turn! That's amazing!
@@BSport320might it be one of the reasons you started this channel in the first place? If you need someone to hold the camera/microphone/light.. just let me know, trips to historical places sound very good 😂 And I just subscribed even 😎
As Italian, it’s a shame that the old circuits like the old Hockeneim , this and the old Monza are now just a memory. They could be used for historical racing, at least 😢
@@adrianzanolinot if they just use them for historic events like Goodwood. They still use hay balls and are allowed to do that because it’s a private historic event to show the cars!
Given the circumstances I'd say they did a pretty good job preserving at least some important parts. Shame the banked corner couldn't at least be partially preserved but it is what it is.
I went there today with my dad! We walked around the south curve banking foundations, and saw the model but I wish we had seen this video to see the original sudcurve at the petrol station. Great video, thanks for showing us everything.
As a local, driving on the AVUS fairly regulary, i am always conscious about the history of this place. But still i learned new things about it in this video, which is really quite impressive. especially the fact, that there is the banking for the Südschleife. Too bad i'm too young to ever been there for DTM, my father has been there in 94 or 95 for one of the last races.
So awesome to see this highspeed wonder. I love that they build a scale model next to the track to work from. Incredible that it's still there and some parts still in good condition.
I drove along the AVUS' straights just a month ago. It astounded me that my friends aboard the car weren't annoyed at all by me letting the motor racing history nerd hang out for three minutes per straightaway!
Great informatve video. When I visited Berlin from the UK in 1992 I hired an Opel Astra and drove the 2 remaining lanes of the AVUS. 20 years later I took my Toyota MR2 for a few laps of the Nurburgring. The only race circuits I have ever driven on. I have walked the Brooklands bankings though.
This is my absolute favorite video of yours and it is a commendable capturing of this track's history. Walking around the woods so we could see the remnants was epic. I'd love to learn more about the aero on those GP cars.
Tolles Video.
I'm still awestruck by Denis Jenkinson's report in 'Motor Sport' of the 1959 German GP at Avus, that I read in 1959 as a ten-year old. I still remember the newspaper photos of Jean Behra's Porsche going over the top of the North Curve banking during the supporting sports car race and reading how he died when, flung from the car, he hit a redundant WW2 flak gun emplacement.
Good stuff mate. Plenty of videos out there about these old tracks that are pretty light on information, but you wen the extra kilometre on this one and taught me plenty I didn't know.
What a wonderful in-depth presentation, which shows unknown facts and views. Even I learned new details, although I watched races right at the embanked Nordkurve around 1966.
I live close by and every time I drive next to Tribüne I have a huge nostalgic feelings and sense of history happening there, even though I never participated any races at this track. Still, it feels so powerful.
Very interesting - I need to go back and watch my DTM videos from 1990-1992 (big Audi V8 fan) as I recall there was always big fights at these turns. Its nice you can still visit the hotel and tower
Danke =)
Great video! This is a track I had basically no knowledge about besides heard one time is exists. Your vid gives a nice overview of what happened and why. Great to see the remnants of it recorded! If I go to Berlin by car, I will surely drive the A115 and go to the curves
Hopefully going back to Berlin this year, I'm a big fan of Wim Wenders "Der himel uber Berlin" and have been to many of the locations but also love motorsports, this is now on the list, danke.
Wirklich starkes Video!
It's a shame a place like this doesn't bring more tourists. It would be nice if they cleaned up and repaired that model in the forest for people to visit. I think I had seen photos of that before, but I never had it explained what it was.
Thank You! Great as allways. Maybe just one proposal for next video from a historic location - could be useful/practical to add also map/illustration with Your actual position at the location at the corner. While some places are easily recognisable, some are not as much, hence such map/illustration could help viewer/s to orient themselves...
Brilliant video - I learnt many things that I didn’t know before. Generally articles and videos about AVUS focus on the banked North Turn, there don’t seem to be many images of the original South Turn, fewer still of the unfinished banked South Turn. It’s astonishing that after 85 years there are still visible remains and you can even see this on Google Earth. One question - had it been completed, would the banked South Turn have been identical to the banked North Turn? Thank you so much for producing this.
Thanks a lot! The new south turn would have been lower but with larger diameter than the north turn, so overall much faster than the old one. So that would have possibly increased average speed to more than 300km/h.
Another question - does anything remain of the hairpin used for the 1959 German GP? I used to be able to see (on Google Earth) one of the two concrete “lay-byes” either side of the dual carriageway which together formed the South Loop on the shortened circuit. I can’t see that on current Google Earth.
Le Mans proto type 24 hours....speed dedicated lanes on the corners and with 9km long straight aways there is room for at least 15 classes of vehicles....
I wish avus still existed. It was so unique and interesting. But people nowadays, especially non-americans, want more "interesting" (geometrically complex) tracks. Ebenfalls danke für die amerikanische einheiten ;) Tolles video
Fascinating, I’m surprised how much has survived. Last better than the Brooklands track which, extremely ironically, has been partly obliterated by Mercedes-Benz. 🙂
I visited Berlin in 2022. Was blindly following satnav instructions on the way to Leipzig. Imagine my surprise when I recognized the race control tower!

Amazing to see the remnants of this very important racetrack. Excellent video!
Thanks a lot!

I worked at DRM AVUS races in the 1980s, but did not know about the bits of track in the woods. Very informative and nicely made video.
