      I do this all the time, but not by mistake. If I miss input a move, I wanna remind my brain how it should be done. If it leads me to lose the round, so be it, I can live with that. My goal is to improve, not win.

      I used to do that in Melee and I still do it in Tekken lol. You have to adopt the "zen" mindset. You must not make a plan to act, you must instead REACT. Empty your mind of all intentions and just play the game as it happens. If you stop to plan then you will get left behind.

      Can confirm as a mid level orange player. Lot of people who've climbed ranks relying on gimmicks that lowers don't have the knowledge to deal with, or people like me who are improving but still occasionally fall back on bad habits (personally I'd call myself an inconsistent player). Vids like these advising the lower ranks can still be useful for better but still incomplete players. Concepts to keep in mind, and new perspectives on the game that you might not have considered. Or simply basic things that might have slipped your mind.

    This is the rank I thought I would just get to reach my whole Tekken experience. I had humble expectations.
    Still, guides like this helped me avoid that fate and I came away with 2 things that immensely helped me with improvement. Peter mentioned these but focusing on them really helped my fundamentals at the time.
    Firstly, this is the rank where mostly people would love to combo incessantly and throw out launchers left and right. So, take advantage and practice your block punishing of df2's, hopkicks and things of the ilk.
    Secondly, start getting used to blocking seeable lows. Bit hard to do depending on connection quality but that may help with reads as well. To add to this, since you have blocked the low, go for gradually improving punishes.

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  4 роки тому +7

      For sure. Definitely something to watch out for launchers and seeable lows. Though seeable lows can be tricky because at 4 bars even 25-27 frame seeables can be difficult to react to.

    • @mitomidou
      @mitomidou 2 роки тому

      @Si0NE somewhat good would be generous. Started 2018 and it took me about 2 years to get somewhat decent. Everybody's style and improvement curve is different, but personally I thought I started understanding the game when I could start making adjustments against opponents rather than just impose my playstyle on to them. Guides like this video and discussions by Swe, BlastedSalami and such helped out with building context on how to approach the game in general and with a specific character.

      Throwing out moves works if you know they will too. Hitting a whiffed launcher with another launcher in neutral has won me a lot of rounds. It's not safe though, you should just give them space and bait it out. If you have the life lead then dont go in, just watch them struggle to throw out big moves.

      law has a kinda fast low poke that I like to almost spam, so my opponents ducks more (also to evade my high pokes) and eats my mids. and I found that dragon tail (law's snake edge) works as a low parry counter (?). that's because they get used to trying to parry the low poke and immediatly standing up to block a mid, and a slow low messes up their timing completely. it's rare to pull it off but it is absolutely hilarious (and kinda cruel lol)

    Proper spacing has always been one of my weaknesses. Way too often, I'm either too close, I'm at range where I can't land anything significant, or I'm too far away to capitalize when someone else whiffs.
    I may have said something similar before, but I think a lot of green ranks will come into a match with one gameplan, launcher into big combo for example, and won't deviate from that plan even if it isn't working.

    After years of being in the silver ranks with Steve in Tekken Revolution and part of Tekken 7, another couple of years in the blue ranks and a few months ago in the green ones, I was only able to reach Warrior rank today. It has been a very long and tortuous road of many, many defeats, to reach that yellow rank. I know I'll rank down at some point, but I know I can rank up again. The Tekken fundamentals content on your channel helped me a lot. If I had known earlier, perhaps I would have ranked up much faster. As well as the content of ThatBlastedSalami and its long videos, especially one with Steve who helped me get to know the character in depth and TheMainMan for shaping my mindset in each fight and rank, all of that helped me grow as a player. Again, very grateful for the advice in your videos, they have helped me a lot, I hope you're doing well.

    • @mrman-yj3bn

      I am newish to tekken 7 and only play steve. I just hit brawler for the first time today after about 275 wins. Getting stomped on by people who I knew were worse than me but relied on cheese moves infuriated me. How many wins did it take for you to get out of blue ranks?
      I will never forgive lucky chloe or king.

    • @Fco2k7
      @Fco2k7 Рік тому

      @@mrman-yj3bn I don't remember how many wins it took me to get out of the blue ranks, but I had a win rate of no more than 30%. Surely there were many defeats that I had. The thing about learning the basics of Tekken with Steve is really hard, because you don't have all the options that an average character has. So in order to move forward with Steve or with a difficult character, you have to learn 3 fundamental things:
      1.- Learn the fundamentals of Tekken.
      2.- Learn to use your character and its gameplan.
      3.- Learn the matchup of the entire roster of the game.
      There is no other shorter way to do it. The third point can be somewhat overwhelming. At first it is not necessary to learn all the matchups in the game. Just focus on the things your opponents throw at you the most and annoy you. Then, go to the lab to find out how to punish or avoid them. Experience will give you the answer to get around the different matchups as you learn them. Now that I've reached Genbu, I can say that I "understand the game", but I still can't get good at it, nor with Steve. As long as the character gives you satisfaction, no matter how difficult it is, it is worth the effort to continue playing it.

    • @mrman-yj3bn
      @mrman-yj3bn Рік тому

      @Fco2k7 Thanks for the tips man really appreciate it.I am mainly struggling with 2 things at the moment. 1 is doing efficient damage when I punish. Every time I look up how to do steve combos and juggles, it's like learning how to solve the davinchi code.
      And 2 is low attack spam and mix up, choloe Katarina law and King and even heachi have been rolling me. With that being said, I have gotten a lot better at noticing laws lows and pressuring chloe so much that she can't set up low combos.
      How many matches do you have before finding a new player? I usually go for best of 3 or 5 but sometimes I feel like I'm just wasting time, other times I look for a new player and the new player ends up being sombody with 500 kazuya wins and I get demolished.

    • @Fco2k7
      @Fco2k7 Рік тому

      @@mrman-yj3bn 1.- More than learning how to do good damage with combos after punishing, learn Steve's gameplan. This consists of 2 things:
      a.-Make a good poke game, for later:
      b.-Perform Counter Hits (or Frametrap for the most Tekken characters).
      After you master that, all you need to know is any basic Steve combo on Counter Hit, nothing fancy one.
      The important thing is that you manage to make a combo that is easy and consistent. With more practice and confidence, you will be able to implement more difficult and damaging combos.
      Believe me, the hardest thing to learn with Steve is his game plan: have a good poke game to cause irritation on your opponent, to see his reaction and analyze what he throws at you. When you have studied your opponent and know when he is going to respond to you, launch a Counter Hit Launcher at him.
      2.- One of Steve's weak points is being attacked with lows, because Steve attacks most of the time with highs and mids, leaving his lower zone unprotected because he has slow lows to poke.
      The only thing that remains there is to learn to block low, when you have the "read" that a low is coming. You do that when you have analyzed your opponent and know their game patterns or flowcharts.
      You can choose to make a low parry to have more options, but it is better to know when you are going to be thrown one and evaluate if that low is punishable or not.
      The best option is to worry about blocking visible lows, which go beyond 22 or 23 frames and up. Any low below 23 frames, it's better to take the hit and keep blocking back normally.
      When you know you're getting the same fast low after a string or every so often, you can guess and make a low block.
      The best advice to get out of low ranks is: If you don't know your opponent's matchup, just backdash and wait for their reaction.
      Check out ThatBlastedSalami's video of the almost 2 hour overview he did about Steve Fox lol. There I learned a lot about the character and how to use it.

    • @Fco2k7
      @Fco2k7 Рік тому

      @@mrman-yj3bn Before I only played to win 2 matches and then I left to play with another one. The problem with that is you don't learn your opponent's matchup, no matter how good he/she is. If you want to scale fast on ranks, you can cherry-pick an opponent to choose the matchups that favor you, but sooner or later you will get strong opponents and you won't know how to deal with them if you don't know their matchup. Now I don't fight for ranks, I fight to learn how to surpass my opponent. If I don't understand how to beat him, I go to the lab to find out how to punish his most used moves.

      Jabs and d/f+1 for the most part are "nearly" unlaunchable on whiff except when you got a hard read on your opponent. The recovery is so fast that when you see them, it's hard to confirm that they whiffed. None the less capitalizing where you can is very important.

    Well.. I lost my saves files, and started from beginning. 1 evening - purple ranks. So top 5 of my personal errors:
    1 Do not labbing - just fight and you’ll be best. But if you dont labbing you doesnt know 80% of game.
    2 Backdash and wavedash? - i dont need that technic. Just def. But if you dont need that - eat lows mate.
    3 I thinked that high and low pokes is a ”pressure”. But high and low pokes is a same moves - all that my opponents needed is a duck.
    4 I learned combos first and thinked that ”hell yeah! Lets rock!” But right way to know character - find his mid moves and strings with mid, find all ch moves, and find his launchers. After that you need to know his safe moves. And only after this - his combos.

    hey peter, thanks for the video!
    I'm actually guilty of throwing a lot of those snake edges
    I understand that its a bad habit, but to reconfirm, should I completely cross myself out from ever using it? Like ever?
    I spent about a year stuck in green, no doubt partly to my fault, but there have been many times I came across turtling players that are so well guarded against highs and mids but not lows, and using snake edge has helped me beat them. I might as well admit that I tend to see snake edge as a panic move as well against characters I dont know how to deal with (alisa, yoshi, josie for instance).
    As a bryan, what can i utilize to move away from relying on snake edge to beat those kind of obstacles I mentioned above? Other than throws I mean

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  4 роки тому +1

      Beating those players with snake edge doesn't mean much since let's face it if you were to play in a real tournament, most of those players would be able to block it. So if that's the case, then the question I ask you is this. How would you deal with a player who can block snake edge? The only answer you have here left to deal with players who just guard against highs and mids would be to use hatchet kick, d/b+3 and d+4. It's not possible for your opponent to completely ignore them. How many low kicks would it take for them to press a button? That's for you to find out and then capitalize on. Also, don't forget about throws. No one is 100% perfect on throw breaks.

    whiffing is my bigest issue so far..as alot of chars have built in evasion..like king jump back spin..or all of yoshis movelist...i find bryans 3 plus 4 if used point blank and is blocked creates pushback where at that range most of my mids will conect at tip range...but not if the oponent has evasive moves to use like even a hwoarang back one or any chars backswing blow...how do i lockdown oponents so i can make shure that i wont whiff my followup...bonus question...i like doing a flowchart with bryan....down 1plus2,2 plus frame..into forward one plus two....into back one..into jet upper...is this totaly useles in high level

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  3 роки тому +1

      If your opponent is doing an evasive move after 3+4, then you can do some thing like dash up hatchet, dash up 3+4, dash up jab, etc... This is where the mind games, and reading the opponent comes in. You need to take notice of what the opponent is doing after your 3+4, and make a mental note. I did 3+4, what did my opponent do? Did they sidestep after? Did they dash in towards me? Did they back off? Did they press a button? Map this out in your head and play accordingly. Sometimes it's not about "locking" down your opponent, but rather getting a read on their tendencies and habits.

    A Kazumi player throwing hopkicks without confirming a sidestep whiff or a close range -15 block punish is not right in the head anyways.

    Who are the tekken most used character used in green rank? I'm asking so i'm gonna learn how to punish them, I saw a lot of Kings and that is great cuz he is my 2nd character, so I know how to punish him. I saw a bit less Jin and Eddy.

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  3 роки тому +1

      It really depends on when you play but I would say characters like Paul, Kazuya, Bryan, King are pretty popular characters.

    This video was spot on, only thing I’d change is when you spoke about 5 moves that bryan player wasn’t using - id swap the machine gun blows for df2/df2,1/df2,3 The first 2 stated options are 100% safe unless someone ducks the second attack of the df2,1 which they wouldnt in those ranks, and even if they do you can CH bait them with df2,3. Just a strategy you can throw out a few times per round

    • @Mirikashh
      @Mirikashh 4 роки тому +1

      Ah and this applies to yellow ranks more than green cos it becomes more of a worthy skill when you can properly whiff punish, but tekken is a 3d game. Dont forget to sidestep

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  4 роки тому

      d/f+1 is incredibly underrated and an amazing tool for locking down opponents. You wouldn't believe the mind games that go into using d/f+1. And I'm not just talking about will he do 1 hit 2 hit or 3 hit. There are a lot of things that go into it like baiting an opponent to pressing a button, and then counter hitting them or high crushing them.

    • @Mirikashh
      @Mirikashh 4 роки тому

      PeterYMao agreed but i think it has to be used the right way which a green rank player may not understand so quick, for example they might finish the string off even though the opponent is blocking which would lead to a free juggle - not an issue at the time but it would be an issue later on if it becomes a habit. With that said i think if they learn to delay punches it could serve to be valuable
