Hey Peter, great video as always! Even in higher ranks, I find whiff punishing with Bryan to be difficult just due to his launchers covering different niches. JU is quick but high, f4, 1 is slow but mid and long range, qcf1 hits evasive stances, etc. By the time I’ve made the right decision they’ve already recovered lol.
This will be something that gets refined over time. Also something you need to keep in mind when playing a particular match up. Against characters with 13frame launchers I rarely throw out f+4,1 against character with terrible 13fr punishers I throw out f+4,1 more frequently. Also something to think about it just have 1 punisher right now. If you are in the yellow ranks, just focus on whiff punishing. Don't over complicate it. If it's too slow, then you just need to react faster.
For the "Not whiff punishing" part, I'm suffering from this as well, but I can definitely put into concrete terms why: About 20-30% of the time it's because I don't react to it, and the majority of the time is because I don't know how to gauge an attack's active hitboxes and when to punish. I know most moves in Tekken are only active for about 1-3 frames give or take, but it's still tough reacting to punish during a move's *active* frames rather than the recovery frames, which means I'll likely miss the punish.
I just recently got to orange ranks for the first time and I can see I'm not making these mistakes so often anymore! (that's also thanks to your teachings ;)) Looking forward to the next video!

Thank you thank you Itsoeasyafterall :) I appreciate you keeping an open mind despite being at a high rank. I think it's this great attitude of looking to improve that has really brought you through the ranks! Keep going man! Best of luck!
PeterYMao you’re very welcome , as long as we keep the mindset with play to learn, then we can enjoy the game , tekken community is considered less compare to many other games, there’s no point for players to be toxic. It’d just drive players away, people chose to learn the game because they have passion and you notice that and find ways to help them, that’s actually pretty cool
PeterYMao I upload my gameplays from time to time , if you like you can check the recent ones too, I just recently got to Emperor, so happy I finally did it 🥰
A few giant swings when your backs to the wall and a few punishes what struggle are you speaking of 🤣 I don't even use king but I have friends that play king....fujin is where people actually start breaking giant swings you got so many other grabs and you don't even need em 😂 "struggle"
ReversalixationYT well as I mentioned, if you main king you’d understand, as soon as you hit Fujin + most players can break Kings throw , so when throws games becomes less of an option we have to play king mostly without grabs ,otherwise our play style becomes predictable. Most characters are faster than King when it comes to poke games or close range game, so playing king at high level require good spacing game and defense. Well if you think there’s no struggle , you can try get a King to emperor or maybe Yaksa yourself, and tell me if you find it easy 😁
Been waiting for this one! Thanks for the tips Mao. Have friends in Yellow ranks and a lot of them do the exact things in this video, especially the button pressing and not respecting wake-ups 😂😂

@@PeterYMao I can't thank you enough I'm now at vanquisher, orange ranks have been literally my aim from the start back in 2017 and I even when I started, I couldn't commit to rank since I had college and played only in vacations Now after I started from expert because of rank rest, I actually continuously was able to reach vanquisher in 2 weeks and I can't thank you enough your videos are awesome
Yeah, Yoshi is unorthodox like that. 6 frame flash means you get to challenge a lot of stuff that traditionally a lot of characters can't. It's what makes Yoshi different from a lot of the cast.
Good video. As a experienced player who started with Tekken 1 arcades I had only two minor issues and that was about the "attacking after being hit" and "whiffing" parts. From my experience on TR, Tag2 Online, and even 7 online it's not necessarily bad to whiff even though it could depend on how your character works. Like for instance Asuka has f 1, d 4. The way it works is after the f 1 you get a +1 on movement then you do d 4. I lost track on how many times green to red rank players misjudge the range of the d 4 because of the +1 movement it was given from the f 1. From some of the cases that I saw in the vid yeah those were cases of whiffing going wrong like the attack by Marduk where he shouldered, got +1 on movement then did the second attack which didn't help. Alot of characters have stuff like that it's just it needs to be properly used and would depend on the intelligence of your opponent. Regarding attacking back I am 50/50. The vid did give a good example where the Miguel was "staggered" (term used by my guide books) after a low hit and attacked after the hit and ate something after it. Granted yeah after being "staggered" it's best to recover and regroup not attack back. But for some other attacks sometimes it would be best to attack back despite yes it being a gamble. Like for instance as Asuka I did f 1, d 4, db, d, db to cancel and got hit by Paul's low punch. Yes I got hit but it unphased me and I wound up doing a ws 3 to get the win after the hit. Agreed it would take knowledge on when to attack back after getting hit but from my experience it's something you should know by green-red ranks regarding your character and common characters you face. But still nothing wrong with learning as you go because you may find out yes for certain attacks after being hit it's ok to hit back while others yeah just keep blocking like Noctis's nonstop 2's or Alisa's chainsaws while others like hits that lead to "staggering" worry about recovering instead.
I advocate players learn while they play for sure. Learning during a session is by far some of the best learning because it takes trial and error in conjunction with practical experience. However, I really don't advocate beginner players press buttons on hit as it leads down some really really bad habits that can be extremely hard to break. I've seen Red, Purple, and Royal Blue rank players lose games where they pressed buttons when they didn't need to. As a result, they lost the round and the game due to a counter hit. I think players should only press a button when they really need to, like if they are about to lose the game anyways, or if they know exactly what they are trying to disrespect the frames on. That's my 2cents on the matter. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions of course. Everyone's learning experience is different. That's what makes fighting games interesting :)
@@PeterYMao I fully agree with you. While sure I haven't gotten to royal blues and purples online but have hit reds online (TR though) but yeah TR, Tag 2, and 7 I see people make the mistakes your talking about. I had cases myself where yeah their almost losing but instead of trying to make a comeback as you said they get impatient or desperate and throw attacks which get stopped by a string or a counter hit type move like Asuka's b 1 counter hit grapple. I have even done it to A King and King players with Leroy's b 1 counter hit. I would bait them with something simple then they would start mashing then eat his B1 counter hit and lose. I have done that to various King or Dragunov players who instead of doing something safe they get overzealous and fall for a counter hit type move. If they low poked or low launched me into something I may have been the one to lose not the other way around. Frankly I see where you're coming from. I was just thinking from the start of the match or both players still have plenty of health left so the match could go either way. I admit I do take chances when I shouldn't but sometimes my efforts have paid off. As I said it's 50/50. Sometimes it's fun to to take chances. Sorry if I sounded rude. I wasn't trying to be rude. I just wanted to give my two cents from my experience. I have seen this video and another video and I feel the advice is great because beginner to top rank players make alot of noticeable mistakes that I feel need to be fixed so players can rank up and top ranks won't be demoted.
First video that I watched from your channel and really helped me, you got a new subscriber. I'm new to tekken, I've been struggling to find a video related to moves that forces crouch on hit, I don't understand the point other than frame adv and on defense what can be done. Kudos!
Thank you Arthur for the sub. As for moves that force crouch. Do you mean moves that force you into crouch on block? On hit? Moves that when you do it put your own character into crouch? The main reason force crouch is important is because it limits the amount of moves that can be performed. When an opponent is in crouch they have access to WS attacks as their fastest options. They have a harder time also moving from full crouch since they will need to cancel the crouch first and then move.
Can’t wait for orange, I usually play for a few months then jump up a full colour, had 3 months at usurper and jumped to overlord recently, red ranks here I come
Challenging on hits is one of my biggest mistakes ima asuka main and she has alot of safe and panic moves that make u believe u can beat out the next hit when its not your turn
Don't get me wrong, there is a time and place to challenge, but if a player is challenging all the time usually it means they are lacking in defense (knowing when to backdash, when to sidestep, when to duck a string, etc..) Take the time to block a little more instead of parrying, using b+3, SS+2 etc...
Still very informative. I gotta admit i still carry some things you pointed out on this video. Time to practice with my older brother. Tuning up for a tournament soon. A game console is on the line.
Usually if you’re stuck it’s most likely something fundamental you’re doing wrong. I suggest asking yourself honestly if you’re playing your character to the fullest, are you whiffing, are you punishing hopkicks, are you pressing buttons on wake up, are you whiff punishing, are you sidestepping and creating opportunities etc... usually there is something that’s missing that I covered in my other top 5 mistakes videos.
Thank you. I hope these tips will finally bring me out from Vindicator, I've been stuck in Vindicator quite a long time I'm actually giving up in ranking up online. At first I thought maybe it's just timing where I can find easier opponents at certain times. But unfortunately it's not, I sometimes encounter bad connection players or just bad matchup (I main Leo) every fucking time I would promotion. This actually disheartened me to rank up and just play offline Tekken. The tips like not sidestepping is totally me because I have a habit to mash and hoping a hit would land. So maybe this time I hope to play even more cleanly and finally bring me up not only away from Vindicator, but even beyond. Once again thank you and I will try again ranking up after these times again 🙏😁
Pressing Buttons on hit should be included in every video from this point honestly lmao. Even offline and at TGP ranks, maybe not to the extent of Purples and below, it still is fairly prominent
ive been trying to train myself to stop doing this. feel like i'm gonna have to make some sort of training routine to remove it. such a horrible habit for me. maybe keep vocalizing it everytime i do that for emphasis
Though this video is five months old, I wanna expand on the whiffing. Whiffing is not necessarily a bad thing to do (most of the time it is) BUT you can bait your opponent to approach you and with that strat you can get a a counter hit and get big damage on your opponent. You a.) have to be perfectly spaced to do this and b.) have to be knowledge about your opponent. Since this video is for yellow ranks most of them are inexperienced which is fine but as you advance up in ranks you will want your opponent to come to you. Up until the red ranks spacing, punishment, and a good keep out is very important so baiting your opponent by whiffing is kinda a good thing. It’s all about mind games.
I don't necessarily thinking baiting is that important at this skill level yet. Players should keep to fundamentals first. Once they get the fundamentals down then they can start incorporating the baiting aspect. It's much harder to learn to not whiff, than it is to learn how to bait in my opinion.
I get giddy and anxious at the same time when these Come out. Proud to not be in whiff section and the whiff punishment section this time. Though amazed at not being in 2d tekken. I often get too 2d in my matches if I don't remember to sidestep. I think it is also a skill that you need to build muscle memory for. I was showing a friend Kazumi's ff4 combo and even though I haven't played her in a while I was always doing a SSR from muscle memory. So building sidestep muscle memory and sidestep block muscle memory often -1 to -4 on block moves is also important I believe.
Whiffing buttons from LONG range is just players trying to catch people moving in. We think, "yo, if they just move in or do anything, I'll catch them with their pants down."
if i successfully side step my opponents attack with bryan, what moves should i be looking to land for follow up? obviously jet upper but that can be somewhat difficult and i feel like doesnt always work. f4 is slow.... f2,14 unsafe if they end up blocking.... idk boys
This is where things get hard. You can sidestep into f+2,1,4 if the opponent is close and you don't have time for JU or f+4,1. But you should be sidestepping and seeing what your opponent whiffs. If you are ever unsure use your 10fr punish or 12fr punish by that I mean 1,4 or 4,3. If they whiff something big cause you side stepped it then use JU or f+4,1.
My peak right now is red ranks & mighty ruler. I would say a big mistake is being too predictable, not utilizing your character's non key moves. Sometimes, throwing out an attack your opponent hasn't seen is enough to catch them. I learned a valuable lesson in this video. I don't make the best decisions with my Oki (especially with far knock downs). I need to be more patient, and check for whiffs!
Jack’s sidestep is not that garbage. You just have to know when to step. Watch my video on top 5 bad Bryan habits. Number will show you just what you can do with Jack’s sidestep.
8:50 Yeah me too I don't sidestep when being pressured cause everytime I do, it's just not the right time. ☹️ 11:05 But I'm glad you explain this part very clearly 😆
My best advice is to start sidestepping and sidewalking as much as you can. See what you can get away with. I know it's scary to let go of the block button, but at the same time... so is getting backed into a wall. When you discover the power of sidestepping you'll be amazed. Trust me :)
Also if you're trying to get your hands on sidestepping keep in mind that there's a huge difference between the following two sequences: sidestep into any attack and sidestep into a block. During the first sequence, your hurt box will grow bigger and you might still get clipped with attacks that are relatively linear. So instead try sidestepping into a block, confirm the opponent whiff and then do some follow up action. With the exception of course if your sidestep attack has some built-in evasiveness, like Asuka's ss2, then go ham at it, it might a really good panic tool :)
@@PeterYMao I have this weird habit of always hopkick if I get one of those. It works more times than not, since most have the habit of not changelling those kind of lows.
@@PeterYMao sure. I'm ESL so I can still improve my English. While I play and my character gets hit by a quick, high crushing low, I tend to hopkick right away. It usually works since the opponent is at minus and in crouch. I know it is quite unsafe (the opponent can always block and punish), but it has a good risk/reward ratio in my opinion.
@@unciervoenciervado depending on the hopkick the risk reward is usually always in favor of hopkicks. So if you have the read hopkicks can definitely work. Against better players it won't work as well, but this is something you'll learn as you play more and more.
I'm in yellow ranks, and when it comes to whiffing and whiff punishing I've been having a hard time. Its not that I'm not looking to punish whiffs (I admit I'm slow and suck, otherwise I would probably not have this problem), but I'm missing a lot of character knowledge. Folks will whiff parts of strings badly looking to counterhit with a delayable extension or just finishing a string, and its hard to tell when its just a single button or the start of a string. On the flip side against greedy players I get away with this for the same reason I think. Besides labbing more, any advice?
Unfortunately, no. Labbing is just part of it. However, during a fight you should keep tabs of the animation that started a string, and the extension that you got hit by. If that's the case that you got counter hit by a string, chances are the player will throw that same string out again. So be on the look out, and play with intent. Pay close attention to the attacks your opponent is using.
For the advice, other than labbing which is the real answer. Longer range attacks with faster frames are usually risky, but in certain matchups are harder to punish, usually being punishers themselves- Those moves can outrange and outspeed and gain respect for stopping opponents from using their safer and shorter range options like dash pokes(or gimmicks like whiffing strings to hope for a ch on the last hit), so look for some of your characters fastest longest range moves, the time will inevitably come when they will win you matches, but without matchup knowledge most characters have risky ones.
Are some mistakes of the purple ranks "smashing buttons, when u get hit" aswell or is it just peter loving to get CH from my jin's magic 4?:^) Jk, Yasugoii here btw :'D

Thanks for the video! Tips are always useful, from basics to "Omega god prime"
Lol, I doubt for Omega lul prime would be that useful. :P
I’m an Emperor rank King player ( if anyone main king would know the struggle to bring him up there ) and I’m still here to see if I miss anything 😁, I share your vids to my TGP and pro player friends too , it’s good to review what we might’ve forgotten.
3:53 lol I can agree to that. And amazing video, really good advice. Tyvm for this :)
Star Proxima thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Glad you enjoyed it! ^_^

Just hit yellow ranks today so hopefully I can use the tips mentioned in this video

Hello! Thanks Willy! How is Paris these days? And thank you for the sub :)
PeterYMao With the pandemic and incomprehensible actions from the gov, things aren’t good :(( But hey I guess Tekken makes me forget the hard times

As we gain ranks and grow, we find ourselves doing things we never thought we could. Great job Armor Wolf, keep on gaining them ranks and making progress :)
These videos are truly amazing bro. I am learning or refining my thought process myself for when I play rank. Really looking forward to checking out the orange and red rank videos of this series.
Glad you like them AcidLite. Ranked is one of those things players just fall victim to over and over again because players I find are not thinking and just "doing stuff"

I'm now at vanquisher, orange ranks have been literally my aim from the start back in 2017 and I even when I started, I couldn't commit to rank since I had college and played only in vacations
Now after I started from expert because of rank rest, I actually continuously was able to reach vanquisher in 2 weeks and I can't thank you enough your videos are awesome
Another great video, not looking forward to the orange rank reality check though for me lmao
:) working on it!
never knew i needed u without actually knowing i needed u btw will u be making the same vids with higher ranks?
I will be making higher ranks for sure!
I know its very niche but i am a yoshi player sometimes... i actually sometimes use flash after i got hit and im on - and it works fairly well
Yeah, Yoshi is unorthodox like that.
@@PeterYMao I guess you answered my question, I was referring "on hit". Hmmm interesting...this game is complex! Having so much fun though.

Rank reset tho
@@persondavis1294 it's not a real rank reset man. If you're in red ranks you'll remain in red ranks
Lovely vid. Thank you, Peter!
Thanks Urahara! Glad you enjoy it :)

Yo! DangerEnergy thank you so much for the vote of confidence and awesome support. I really appreciate that compliment my dude!
I've been stuck in yellow rank for 2 months constantly going up and down ranks. I occasionally get to browns but get demoted in 5 minutes lol
Lol. I don't think I can I feel like I would be cheating viewers of actual content if I did that lol. Even though... I agree with you. Hahaha.
ive been trying to train myself to stop doing this. feel like i'm gonna have to make some sort of training routine to remove it. such a horrible habit for me. maybe keep vocalizing it everytime i do that for emphasis
Literally everytime you post this videos I always hit the rank talked about in the video
Dang! You must be a monster at climbing ranks! Impressive!
Hey Peter, what's the custom map at 5:04 ? Looks very clean
Here you go. www.deviantart.com/shnuki/art/Tekken-7-Stage-Mod-Kinder-Gym-Futuristic-738707385
@@PeterYMao Thanks Peter, love the things you do for the community
I get giddy and anxious at the same time when these Come out. Proud to not be in whiff section and the whiff punishment section this time. Though amazed at not being in 2d tekken. I often get too 2d in my matches if I don't remember to sidestep. I think it is also a skill that you need to build muscle memory for. I was showing a friend Kazumi's ff4 combo and even though I haven't played her in a while I was always doing a SSR from muscle memory. So building sidestep muscle memory and sidestep block muscle memory often -1 to -4 on block moves is also important I believe.
Keep up the good work Bull_DozZzer :) I hope you keep improving man!!
@@PeterYMao I am trying brother. But do you some days feel that you have regressed in your game?

Oh my lord I needed to hear this

thank you for all your hard work Peter
No worries! Thank you for watching Soukio!
Whiffing buttons from LONG range is just players trying to catch people moving in. We think, "yo, if they just move in or do anything, I'll catch them with their pants down."
And then... whiff punished 😭
if i successfully side step my opponents attack with bryan, what moves should i be looking to land for follow up? obviously jet upper but that can be somewhat difficult and i feel like doesnt always work. f4 is slow.... f2,14 unsafe if they end up blocking....
If they whiff something big cause you side stepped it then use JU or f+4,1.
if you can manage to get to their back 3,3,2 is fully guaranteed
B4 safe mid knee and guaranteed ff2 follow up in the open with plenty other moves guaranteed at the wall
@@bloodbath10010 barring execution of course :)
Absolutely! Checking for whiffs is super important xD
Fantastic content, please keep it up

Yeah me too I don't sidestep when being pressured cause everytime I do, it's just not the right time. ☹️
11:05
But I'm glad you explain this part very clearly 😆
My best advice is to start sidestepping and sidewalking as much as you can. See what you can get away with. I know it's scary to let go of the block button, but at the same time... so is getting backed into a wall. When you discover the power of sidestepping you'll be amazed. Trust me :)
@@PeterYMao Alright I'll try to apply more during Online 😆
Thanks Peter 👍🏻
Also if you're trying to get your hands on sidestepping keep in mind that there's a huge difference between the following two sequences: sidestep into any attack and sidestep into a block. During the first sequence, your hurt box will grow bigger and you might still get clipped with attacks that are relatively linear. So instead try sidestepping into a block, confirm the opponent whiff and then do some follow up action. With the exception of course if your sidestep attack has some built-in evasiveness, like Asuka's ss2, then go ham at it, it might a really good panic tool :)
Awesome stuff!
Thanks whitezul!!!
Can you do red rank next
I’m going in order of the colors. Orange is next then red.
My mistake is being stubborn and sticking with lili when my asuka is just as good lol
I'll be usuper soon and then from there on to orange ranks
Hell yeah!
Some lows are minus on hit. It's good to take a moment and see which ones (especially if they are abused)
Yup. Some lows are minus on hit. Usually it's the fast lows that are 16 frames or faster to start up that are minus on hit last I checked.
@@PeterYMao I have this weird habit of always hopkick if I get one of those. It works more times than not, since most have the habit of not changelling those kind of lows.
@@unciervoenciervado Sorry could you reword this? It doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks Mokhammed :) glad you enjoyed it!
Longer range attacks with faster frames are usually risky, but in certain matchups are harder to punish, usually being punishers themselves-
Those moves can outrange and outspeed and gain respect for stopping opponents from using their safer and shorter range options like dash pokes(or gimmicks like whiffing strings to hope for a ch on the last hit), so look for some of your characters fastest longest range moves, the time will inevitably come when they will win you matches, but without matchup knowledge most characters have risky ones.
