It took me so much trial and error and time to configure Mr Burns' image last year. Recently my micro sd card became corrupted and when researching on how to rotate the screen i ran across the Smithers script. It was alot easier than I had expected. Now i'm loving my vertical cab so much especially with the classics like Ms. Pac and Donkey Kong and all of my fav Shoot 'em ups like Raiden II. Thanks!!
So I was moving some rom files around a managed to corrupt my Mr Burns image again. So had to reformat and re-image. Your video again was invaluable to install the smithers script! thanks again!
This video helped me out. I was having issues with the original image and button config. Formatted, reconfiged (had to add another button as A) and now my mrs Pacman countercade is LIT :) many thanks !
Thanks for this vid, this is exactly what I wanted! For me Attract Mode is now sideways but I'm one of the weirdos that prefers not to use Attract Mode, just ES. Thanks again!
My way of using the burns image is to load up the arcade text document and simply add (*) to the start of any game I don't want to see in attract mode. I mapped the player 1 and player 2 buttons to move up and down a letter in the game list. I like the attract mode look, just needed to thin out the game list
Please help every time I power my countercade I get a black screen and sound effects. I have to ctrl alt del the raspberry Pi or cycle the power to get the image to load properly every time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
WOW - so much more easier than the other "How To" videos on making this work right. Thank you so much for sharing a simple way to make it work.I'm brand new to retro gaming and learning a lot. I'm using this image on my first bar top arcade and it will be great if there was a a way to power the pi down in software without having to type. I have a pi 3B+. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!! I learned a lot!
You can use the Start menu and Shutdown to turn it off. Another option is to connect a button to the GPIO pins and install a script. I am considering adding GPIO to my next version of the Smither script.
I am going to do this update tonight. I found you on fb, thanks so much for this and your work. I seem to remember the original image was oriented properly for my screen, as I am not using an A1UP screen. Would you recommend exiting ES and editing the script if this update for orientation? Or does ES offer an orientation option? And is the ratio going to stay the same after the update? I am really looking forward to fixing this image, I built a second bar-top just for a vertical image right around the time of the original release of Mr B. Thanks again!!
The /boot/config.txt sets the rotation for Emulation Station with display_rotate. You can try changing this value if it is upside down for you, and switch to display_rotate=1 instead of 3.
My script does not impact the sound settings. However I usually connect my speakers to the HDMI board and all seems to work with defaults. I have experienced issues when switching the audio settings back and forth, so if you get stuck, it might be worth reflashing your card and starting over.
I would suggest using the keyboard and hitting tab, and then either adjust the volume db in the menu or map keys to volume up and down and adjust. I am not certain if it saves the volume level on exit, but if it does then you should be good.

I always get black unused space and my games don't fill the screen side to side, do you know what setting I need? I've been trying all the resolutions in the config but no luck.
If you are using a fresh copy of the Mr Burns image and the Smithers script you should not have such issues. It sounds like you have an option in the RetroArch config different than I am using. I would suggest to start over on a new SD card or reflash your current one to get back to a known state.
I am using a 4:3 screen and had black bars on the side of games. I had to go into the retroarch settings to change the X coordinate and also the aspect ratio and resolution. The mr burns image is preconfigured for a vertical 16:9 aspect ratio so it needs adjusting in retroarch to make it fill the screen on a 4:3 or even a 16:10 monitor. Here is a video of someone doing the opposite as he is restricting a full screen view on a 4:3 monitor but you can just change yours to match the settings he starts with. ua-cam.com/video/FlVmV3rtKmc/v-deo.html
I am using the Mr. Burns image but I have already figured out how to rotate the screen. I mainly use attract mode. If I add the Smithers script, will that give me the favorites option? And do you know if that favorites option would be visible in attract mode as well? That is what I'm most interested in. Thank you for the video!
No, this script does not enable favorites in attract mode. It does not support attract mode at all. Attract mode was set up in such a way that splash screens are fixed to a different orientation, and this script will move around the media files as well.
Hello. I’m a complete novice with molding and need some help. I have a similar machine (Pacman); unbuilt. Want a similar mod without any drilling or adding buttons. Was planning on using a 4 or 8 GB Raspberry Pi 4. Is that good? Also, is the “image” the same term of the “ROMs?” I’m also unclear of where to download this image? Thanks! Liked and Subscribed!
You will likely need to add some buttons because PacMan doesn't have that many to start with. A Raspberry Pi 4 is better than what I am using in this video, but the Mr Burns image is a Pi 3 image and I don't think it will boot on a Pi 4. You will need a different image for that one. Search for Arcade Punks and you should be able to find the images.
