"just running the tool back and forth hoping it works" is an absolutely valid technique called 'raking' and at least two of the tools in your pick set are designed for just that.

I grew up doing this for people, and masterlocks are always my favorite, the little hole In bottom was perfect for bending the pick, getting a decent tension wrench was always the tricker part
Now a days I either have a full set with me of actual picks or I keep a mini set in my leatherman pouch,
And if you turn lock wrong way , use a flat head and twist it super fast in the opposite way , it'll work sometimes, I always have my leatherman on me

Me and two of my friends learned how to lockpick a simple padlock like the one at the end of your video in a single car ride. We just brute forced our way to finding out how to do it. Kind of scary how easy it is to get by some of the things that we rely on so heavily.
it was very helpful. Really I am proud of this trick as it saved me from a huge problem. I was not able to open the lock of my bird's cage as it's key was lost. And then I saw this video which really inspired me gave me courage. I got really afraid when I was nit able to find the key.

I’ll tell you what everyone wants, a retry at learning to backflip, we NEED to see it man
4:05 Trying to make the Raking pick (what you called a hook), you might be able to do it easier by bending one of the paperclip "u" apart and together again until it snaps. This gives the pick shape without needing to bend one of the ends specifically into that shape and struggling to find something strong enough around you to bend it (or chipping a tooth). That's how I used to make my raking picks when experimenting with paperclips and bobby pins.
But then you get a very sharp and "bite-y" edge on the tip of the pick that gets caught on pins and probably other parts of the lock. It's better than a chipped tooth but I think it's better to just use the lock to make a hook at the end of the pick

Wow, you made this really complicated! I used to pick locks with a paperclip or a pair of compasses when I was in first year secondary school. They were cheap locks, and I could only do a few of them, but it was pretty easy when it worked. No pre-bending of wires or anything.

So for the technique you're describing, which is raking essentially. Your best bet is to make a wave rake. Simple, yet effective.. for most locks. You made a hook which is mostly for single pin picking which takes a lot of practice and finesse. Better for tougher locks, but much harder to master. You did very well considering.

Im over the moon rn. Just managed to unpick the lock to my uni room after locking my keys in there, used two hair clips from a friend and couldn't believe it when it opened, never picked a lock before today but remembered this video from last year and it worked!

I tried using paper clips as my first lockpicking tools and thought I was just bad at it because I could never get the lock open. It's honestly really good to hear that I wasn't the issue, so many people recommend them that I thought they really were an "easy" way to get a lock open.
Paperclips are good for tension wrenches imo, but I prefer Bobby pins for making hook picks.
The teachers lounge is extremely comfortable

i watched ur first lockpicking video and went to school the next day and picked the lock in the bathroom on a toilet paper safe or whatever and had never picked a lock before. it took me about 10 minutes

I know it's been three years, but the best paperclip tool to make IMO are rakes, at my school I could open every single lock with them.. People and teachers asked my help when they had a lock they couldn't open cuz I would just enter and exit fast with a rake and the lock would open

I've never had a lockpicking set or had the real tools to practice with. Paperclips or bobby pins are the only thing I've ever used. The fastest way I've found is that you want both paperclips to be straight as possible and use a raking/rocking technique where you push all pins down and slowly pull it out letting each one fall into place. I'm not at all skilled at it yet but it definitely gets the job done.

dude you are probably the only guy that i would want to try and pick my front door lock when i leave in a hurry you'd just end up locking it.
A few years ago I came home from school to find I had lost my house key, it was freezing cold and if I hadnt gotten inside I would have had to go to a neighbors house, but I sat out there and picked the lock with some paperclips in my school bag and got in! this is a good skill to know if you get locked out and only have limited resources.
when i was a kid i was in my brothers room wit a random stick i found outside and my brothers door had a key hole that was the same type as a vintage key (search dat up i u want ) and my little brain was like
"hey, leme shove that stick up that hole and twist"
low and behold i somehow look the door and the key that my brother used to keep was not in his room so mah parents had to go on a hunt for a key for 2 hours before unlocking the door

I had an idea for your next skill. I’ve been boxing for quite a while now and using and learning the speed bag was one of the harder things I had to do. I think you would be able to get it down quickly but I would want to see if you could do it for 30 consecutive seconds.
