  • Kalaripayattu - The Orient's treasure trove, a gift to the modern world and the mother of all martial arts. Legend traces the 3000-year-old art form to Sage Parasurama- the master of all martial art forms and credited to be the re-claimer of Kerala from the Arabian Sea. Kalaripayattu originated in ancient South India. Kung- fu, popularized by the monks of the Shoaling Temple traces its ancestry to Bodhi Dharma - an Indian Buddhist monk and Kalaripayattu master.
Crafted in ancient South India drawing inspiration from the raw power and sinuous strength of the majestic animal forms - Lion, Tiger, Elephant, Wild Boar, Snake, and Crocodile ........ Kalaripayattu laid down the combat code of the Cholas, the Cheras and the Pandyas. Shrouded in deep mystery and mists of secrecy Kalaripayattu was taught by the masters in total isolation, away from prying eyes.
Following the collapse of the princely states and the advent of free India - Kalaripayattu has lost its significance as a mortal combat code. In a Phoenix-like resurrection, Kalaripayattu is today emerging in a new avatar - an ancient art form - a source of inspiration for self-expression in dance forms - both traditional and contemporary, in theatre, in fitness and in movies too.

alternatively..the indus valley civilizatio is considered to be a proto-dravidian civilization..and there is no signs or aryan invasion in india. indus valley predates the other civilizations in the fertile region where intellect began. sanskrit and tamil were both developed by the indigenous people in which case we must strive to preserve and promote these arts and not let it die.

I am from London England, I didn't say north Indian though there use to be martial arts practised there before such as Gupta Shastra from Bengal and many more, most of them are extinct coz of the British Raja's ban. But some are still around like Thang-Ta from Manipur, Sri searat and Butthan from Bangladesh. I do not doubt u, just a correction unless u can prove me wrong. But all I am saying is that the north Kerala uses un-armed techniques much as the south but I stated the difference.

okay soutihes.....what we are today..our language tamil or malayalam or kanada or telugu, our intellect, our psychology, our arts everything can be owed to Agasthiyar and a class of other siddhars. but is agastiyar and other brahmin class people different from our race? as in are they aryans and we are dravidians? if thats the case there is no point in claiming these arts to be our own becoz it was given to us by a different race.

Now do the math and come to the full realisation that not only will people think that if every city was like an Indian city (as an example, there are other countries we can use) that would indicate the end of the beginning, they would have a front row seat. FYI google New Zealand or Fiji and Beach to find out what they are really suppose to look like.

This must be the funniest fucking joke that I am hearing - that Kalaripayattu is the mother of all martial arts, that Shaolin Temple traces its ancestry to Bodhi Dharma. There is absolutely not a single shred of historical evidence to support that claim. And no present day indian martial arts bears any resemblance whatsoever to Shaolin kungfu.

@@truthseeker3536 when we say the martial arts of a country originated from another country, surely there must be lots of close similarities between the martial arts of the two countries. The fact is, Indian martial arts don't even look like Chinese martial arts. Now, let me give you a real example of a martial arts originating from another country. Do you know where Karate comes from? It's from China. Japanese karate first came from Okinawa. In the old days, there was alot of trade activities between Okinawa and South China. Through these activities, the Chinese brought South Chinese martial arts to Okinawa. The type of Chinese martial arts that speak to Okinawa is called White Crane martial arts which was invented by a nun of Southern Shaolin Temple. If you observe, Okinawa karate is very very similar to Chinese white crane martial arts especially the Sanjin moves of karate which are identical to 三战 moves of white crane. After the Okinawa japanese learnt n modified the Chinese white crane martial arts, they spread it to mainland Japan. There are lots of youtube videos that explain how white crane martial arts spread from China to Japan, and some of these videos are made by Japanese. The Japanese themselves acknowledge that the roots of Karate came from China. Try looking for a video on the Grandmaster of Gojuryu Karate in Okinawa where he visited South China to trace the roots of Karate. In the video, he and some Chinese masters demonstrated their skills and you will see how similar karate and southern Chinese martial arts are. However, if one compares Chinese and Indian martial arts, there is ZERO similarity.

@@truthseeker3536 Here's a long article explaining shaolin martial arts did not originate from India or anywhere :
there are many stories told about Bodhidharma throughout 15 centuries. Scholars have verified not a single story about him. Many of these legends are physically impossible or simply extremely unlikely. New stories are added to his biography many times throughout history, yet these are simply made up stories. The story about Bodhidharma teaching martial arts at Shaolin … does not exist. This is an internet-age misconception built, unfortunately, on Indian nationalism and lies to take credit for Kung Fu. What the Shaolin monks believe is that Bodhidharma, a zen teacher, arrived in the 6th century and taught exercises (not martial arts) to the monks, and the monks developed these exercises into Shaolin Kung Fu. This story first appears in the 17th century. It is not verified by any historian. In fact, Shaolin Kung was fully developed by the monks some time in the 16th century and its creation is attributed to Bodhidharma. Traditional attributions have happened countless times throughout history, all over the world.
There is a difference between Legend and History. If you know the history of Shaolin, you will quickly realise the ‘Bodhidharma founder of Kung Fu’ legend is not true and there are many historical and logical errors within the story. The true history of Shaolin martial arts is a lot different. I will explain the differences between the legend and history of Kung Fu here.
The SHAOLIN LEGEND. According to tradition, in the 6th century, Bodhidharma taught physical exercises to the monks and left behind a martial arts manual after his death. This manual was studied by the monks, whose teachings led to the creation of Kung Fu. This is why we hear stories that Kung Fu originated in India. This story is nothing more than a myth.
The YI JIN JING. This is the exercise manual that Bodhidharma supposedly wrote, which led to the creation of Kung Fu. However, there are a number of errors with this authorship.
      1) The attribution to Bodhidharma is a proven forgery - since the mid Qing Dynasty.
      2) The exercises in the manual are of Taoist nature, not Indian or even Buddhist.
      3) The composition of the manual is speculated to date to the 17th century, while the oldest extant copy dates to the early 19th century.
In addition to Taoist qigong exercises, there are possibly Indian breathing exercises included in the Yi Jin Jing, as speculated by scholars (such as Phillip Zarrilli and Meir Shahar). The Yi Jin Jing is also the earliest record to mention that Bodhidharma taught exercises.
The TRUE HISTORY. Shaolin Kung Fu is, historically, not nearly as old as the beliefs state. The martial art is commonly thought to originate in the 6th century. However, there is no record of the monks engaging in combat until the 15th century. Many may not know this, but the technical name for Shaolin Kung Fu is actually ‘Luohan-quan.’ This name comes from an exercise set in the Yi Jin Jing, called the ‘18 Luohan Hands.' Shaolin Kung Fu is based on these exercises and Bodhidharma is traditionally believed to have written the Yi Jin Jing. This is the reason that the monks venerate Bodhidharma as the ‘founder of Kung Fu.’
An INTERNET MYTH also exists, which is different to the legend believed by Shaolin monks. According to many misinformed online sources, Bodhidharma was a martial arts master who taught Kalaripayattu to the Shaolin monks, therefore, Kung Fu is a derivation of Kalaripayattu, and originated in India. This is a great deviation from what the Shaolin monks believe, and there are also a number of errors with such claims.
      1) No historic Chinese document has ever stated that Bodhidharma knew how to fight.
      2) Shaolin does not believe Bodhidharma knew or taught martial arts at all.
      3) Indian martial arts (including Kalaripayattu) being brought over to China is never mentioned in records.
      4) Kalaripayattu is only believed by historians to date to between the 12th and 14th centuries, despite the legendary claims that it was created by Indian deities thousands of years ago.
BODHIDHARMA is a primary figure in the legendary origin of Shaolin Kung Fu, but there are some reasons to doubt the stories told about him or even his very historical existence.
      1) There are no records of him in India, despite him being the son of a Pallava king.
      2) Shaolin does not hold any records of his name when he supposedly lived.
      3) There is no archaeological evidence of him anywhere, including his purported grave site.
      4) The first few documents written about Bodhidharma do not mention he visited Shaolin at all.
      5) In every Chinese record that mentions his name, his story changes, there is very little consistency here (as pointed out by John McRae, a scholar on Buddhism. Also, the Kung Fu origin myth only dates to the 17th century).
      6) Many legends told about him are physically impossible (eg. meditating and staring at a wall for 9 years without blinking).
SCHOLARLY RESEARCH. These reasons lead scholars to believe one of two things regarding his existence. Most scholars believe in the second theory.
      1) Bodhidharma was a completely fictional character from Chinese Buddhist literature
      2) Bodhidharma was a semi-mythical figure based on one or multiple Indian teachers to arrive in China to teach Buddhism.
The DIFFERENCES between the Shaolin legend, internet belief, and historical account:
Shaolin Legend: Shaolin Kung Fu is 1500 years old and was founded by Bodhidharma - a zen Buddhist teacher - through teachings of exercises and Yi Jin Jing. (Dates to the 17th century)
Internet Belief: Shaolin Kung Fu is 1500 years old and was founded by Bodhidharma - a legendary martial arts master - through teachings of Indian martial art Kalaripayattu, Ayurvedic medicine and yoga. (Dates to the early internet age)
True History: Shaolin Kung Fu is about 500 years old and its foundation was based on Taoist qigong exercises and Shaolin martial training (also possibly Indian breathing exercises).
The Popularity of the Bodhidharma Myth. One of the main reasons the ‘Bodhidharma Founder of Kung Fu’ legend remained alive for so long is because it is a great story, and martial artists like to read stories about the legendary origins of certain fighting arts. The legend is certainly more interesting than the true history of Shaolin Kung Fu, therefore this tale has been retold many times around the world.
The True Origin of Shaolin Kung Fu lies in Taoist qigong exercises, not Indian martial arts or yoga. If you are familiar with the true history of Shaolin, you would already know this. As the Yi Jin Jing dates to the 1600s, this means that: The story of Bodhidharma teaching exercises at Shaolin is only a few hundred years old.
Scholars and historians such as Tang Hao, Stanley Henning, Heinrich Dumoulin, Meir Shahar, Phillip Zarrilli, John McRae and Jeffrey Broughton who have studied Buddhism or Shaolin have all debunked the Bodhidharma myth. No scholar has ever verified this story - it is a myth and should not be considered beyond that.
