And before him ofcourse the line of teachers back to the Buddha. Unfortunately the current Shaolin temple in China is a tourist trap. I mean no offense, it is a great wushu school but the essence of Shaolin was almost eradicated from China in several instances from before the fall of the Qing dynasty and especially the cultural revolution. Fortunately the arts live on outside China and in China itself several Daoist schools still maintain a very high level. For those genuine in their searching, when you are ready a master appears. Don't limit yourself - genuine yoga, kungfu, Taoist arts - different brands but the same essence. They are humanity's greatest treasures.

I remember going to stay at Shaolin Temple in 2000. Hard training. Bodhidharma's Cave is up on the hill above the Temple. We can say that Shaolin was the first Zen Buddhist Temple. This is a great connection between India and the Far East. Also, later the Chinese Monk Xuanzang in the Tang Dynasty travelled to India to collect the Buddhist Sutras. India and China and the Far East share strong spiritual links.

The important part of this story is that bodhidharma had laid the foundation of the patriach lineage of his teaching called Chan Buddhism, which illuminates the Mahayana and vajrayana teachings. However, because the Chinese had not understood the meaning of his visit and had not listened to his wisdom he had only left them written teachings, which later had to be translated into Chinese by another Indian monk that was in China at that time. Bodhidharma continued his journey back to central Tibet and taught the Tibetan people his wisdom of the vajrayana teachings.
One of the most recently invented and familiar of the Shaolin historical narratives is a story that claims that the Indian monk Bodhidharma, the supposed founder of Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhism, introduced boxing into the monastery as a form of exercise around a.d. 525. This story first appeared in a popular novel, The Travels of Lao T'san, published as a series in a literary magazine in 1907. This story was quickly picked up by others and spread rapidly through publication in a popular contemporary boxing manual, Secrets of Shaolin Boxing Methods, and the first Chinese physical culture history published in 1919. As a result, it has enjoyed vast oral circulation and is one of the most "sacred" of the narratives shared within Chinese and Chinese-derived martial arts. Chinese Martial Arts was not quite given to it by BodhiDharma, Shaolin monks were incentivised to practice martial arts from then, in China, martial artists were everywhere, Even in First Emperor Q'in era, a lot of generals and kings were already well versed in it. Shaolin martial arts were also given by a lot of other contemporary artists, so it has many styles and forms and shapes

I've researched the history of the Chinese & Japanese Martial Systems years ago quite in depth. From an Historical scholarly perspective, or any other for that matter, there are a great many versions and accounts of these histories, depending on WHEN/WHERE & from WHOM these "historical re-accountings" are sourced. The vague & oversimplified story here is a popular one and asserts the Indian Buddhist connection/origins of contemporary popular Martial Art systems throughout Asia. Yet, here is so refined and condensed so that it is almost non-sensible.
Buddhism is hinduism only. rebirth, karma, meditation, dharma, postures.100% of Buddhism is hinduism only. buddha spread hinduism. but his way of teaching hinduism is called Buddhism. in reality there is no buddhism.
I always thought it was to buddhist monks, carrying around stuff as they hurried along the monastery corridors to attend classes and services, but who still needed to salute and greet teachers respectfully along the way, that the one-handed gesture was attributed. But then, if these ancient monks was taught Shaolin kung fu as part of the obligatory training so they could protect themselves on pilgrimages, I guess there's no real difference anyhur.

The Chinese have their own Chinese Internal Intrinsic energy fighting systems; however these systems only show great results after long years of practice. The yogic system Bodhidarma introduced brought more immediate results, but have undesirable effects in old age whereas the indigenous system had no such . The Buddhist monks at Shaolin were impressed with the “ fast results “ and paid no heed to the undesirable effects at old age as the younger ones were impatient. Later on, the Shaolin experts were able to incorporate the original Taoist qigong system into Bodhidarma’s system. So it is wrong to say the Bodhidarma brought kungfu to China. The iDravidians have their kalaripayat, but the Chinese had their own authentic native qigong and internal martial arts. The Taoists are not showy, and their system do not produce the athletic musculature which enthrals the impatient youths who looked for quick instant noodle results but might contain pitfalls at advance age.
Bodhidharma ‘’達摩‘’ went to China to teach the Zen meditation method, we consider him the first patriarch then came down to 6th generation where it blossomed. Before Bodhidarma left Shaolin temple to leave for pilgrammage he left some yogic breathing exercises for the monks to practice to strengthen body and for protection, e.g. "Bone changing classics" 《易筋經》and "Washing tendon classics" 《洗髓經》. Then over the centuries, martial arts developed on its own inside the two Shaolin temples, and likely some travelling monks (even laymen) across China when visiting the temples should have also contributed to the volume of these Shaolin martial arts.

I have heard that Prince Narendra of Kanchipuram, third in line for the throne, became a Buddhist monk. He is not from Mahabalipuram but could have roamed around in his pet elephant and horse. Perhaps he walked north and reached China via Tibet. I was wonder stuck when a cultural show there about 30 years back had Silambam demonstration. I knew the same movements and twirling of the long stick. I understood immediately that it has travelled from Tamilnadu to China. Hail Tamil, (Thamilh), one of the ancient living languages. There are palm leaf manuscripts about this martial art still in existence.
Kalaripayattu is great and super, its the origin of shaolin kungfu but shaolin kung fu little by little developed into different forms that are unique. Base was kalaripayattu. From kalaripayattu and Buddhism shaolin kung fu also got the influence of self awareness, energies etc. Later from shaolin influence wudang kung fu, tai chi developed.
Shaolin records of Kung Fu do not mention Bodhidharma or learning martial arts from Indians. This Bodhidharma Kung Fu story is only a Taoist myth from the 17th century. 🤭
An Indian tradition regards Bodhidharma to be the third son of a Pallava king from Kanchipuram. This is consistent with the Southeast Asian traditions which also describe Bodhidharma as a former South Indian Tamil prince who had awakened his kundalini and renounced royal life to become a monk

The chinese already have their own fightin techniques(like everybody else) and they have the taoist on wu tang mountains and elsewhere doing their various chi kung(with different names) Bodhidharma brings buddhism in his Chan (in japanese Zen,in sanscrit Dhyan) current, wich requires a lot of discipline and self enquiring and doesn't keep in much consideration the holy texts. He teach the basic stretching of the southern Indian martial arts, and the chinese during centuries have refined it a lot.
so it's true India is the origin of all martial arts, I've already heard before, that's so amazing how India has a big contribution to humanity, since from martial arts to numerals and so many other things...All I hope is India can become a greater nation than China one day. Indian people are much better than CCP. Now the question is: Why India stop developing martial arts? I mean basicly all martial arts is chinese or japanese, why India didn't develop like those countries the martial arts?

The way so many Indian and yogic philosophies permeate his actions, and how they are understood by others is so interesting.

That this story is clearly a twentieth-century invention
Background sound is unlike Isha. Please dont make it so loud, we can keep it subtle as in previous videos. 🙏🙏
We should thank A.R.murugadoss, director of "7am arivu". Bcoz of his movie world realised the origin of kung fu, especially India.
Kungfu is not kalaripayattu, bring ur kalaripayattu fighter come spar with Shaolin & proof ur art more superior
@@HugeDíck-y9s no one is claiming kalari is better than kung fu. Its a historical fact than kung fu evolved from kalari. Its their origin story that many historians accept.
Why u guys always want to fight over something?? 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
This is the best historic summary, I have read, watched a lot of Chinese TV series and movie of DalaiDharma( or BodhiDharma), he had blue eyes and he himself only practised Yoga.

Thank you much Sir Sadhguru; there are great men in India
Nice to share the story to the world. Let’s me obtain the mother of martial arts now
Me too. I am planning to do the same as well

He is a Buddhist😂
@@BallsOfSteel2310 Agastya Muni wasn't a Buddhist
Buddhism is hinduism only. rebirth, karma, meditation, dharma, postures.100% of Buddhism is hinduism only. buddha spread hinduism. but his way of teaching hinduism is called Buddhism. in reality there is no buddhism.
Buddhism is also Sanatan bro..Sanatan embraces every world..only to develop Ahimsa n karuna through tyaga
We need proud but we don't want to learn 😂
Totally appreciate the animation and background music😊
I always thought it was to buddhist monks, carrying around stuff as they hurried along the monastery corridors to attend classes and services, but who still needed to salute and greet teachers respectfully along the way, that the one-handed gesture was attributed. But then, if these ancient monks was taught Shaolin kung fu as part of the obligatory training so they could protect themselves on pilgrimages, I guess there's no real difference anyhur.
Proud to know the Origins of Martial arts
There is one person in Bangalore, who is The Grand Master and the founder of Sailum Martial Arts Academy.. Aacharya T Raghu .. who has done the in-depth study about the history of Kung-fa and Bodhidharma ( it’s not Kung fu).. he himself is an high standard Martial Artist, a writer and an example..
It’s good to know more about the GrandMaster Aacharya T Raghu..
It's not kung-fa either, it's 功夫
@@ShinysArc It's 武术
@@hamstring6792 It depends if you write it in simplified or traditional chinese. They're both correct
@@ShinysArc They aren't the same. 功夫 is gongfu and 武术 is wushu.
@@hamstring6792 Oh yeah my bad. When we say kung-fu we usually talk about how the chinese refer to wushu, but the characters for kung-fu are actually 功夫 yeah But I just wanted to point out that kung-fa doesn't make sense (from the original comment)

He is talking about Buddhist martial arts. Taoist martial arts in China are much much older than that.
Buddhism is older than Taoism
Thanks for helping us learn 🙏

Sadhguru really a great teacher for all❤
I have heard that Prince Narendra of Kanchipuram, third in line for the throne, became a Buddhist monk.
No, Wudang KF doesn't come from Shaolin or Kalaripayattu. It comes from Taoism and native Chinese MA that predate Bodhidarma by many centuries.
Same thing for Tai Chi. Zero connection to Indian Martial Arts.
@@alexdavid8545 it's easy to see... they just claim... just look at the origins of the martial arts
Taichi and Wudang ma have **nothing** todo w/ Indian, it's native Chinese ma developed over centuries.

Anything and everything is just the myth of India. No evidence, No historical record, yet Indians claim it as fact.
Shaolin Kunfu was influenced by Buddhism but kungfu in general existed in china already by the time Buddhism came. The concept of Qi, Ying and Yang came from Taoism.
Muito bom! 👏👏👏
Ancient India…full of Mysteries and At the same time involved with our Master as well before the spreading of the Shaolin way of the Monk with one of the Magi who came to see the Master, Yeheshua Hamachia as an infant.
I love you Sadhguru ❤️
The chinese already have their own fightin techniques(like everybody else) and they have the taoist on wu tang mountains and elsewhere doing their various chi kung(with different names)
Bodhidharma brings buddhism in his Chan (in japanese Zen,in sanscrit Dhyan) current, wich requires a lot of discipline and self enquiring and doesn't keep in much consideration the holy texts.
He teach the basic stretching of the southern Indian martial arts, and the chinese during centuries have refined it a lot.
A great storyteller….mix of fact with fiction. But Damo did influence the development of kungfu…🤗
so it's true India is the origin of all martial arts, I've already heard before, that's so amazing how India has a big contribution to humanity, since from martial arts to numerals and so many other things...All I hope is India can become a greater nation than China one day. Indian people are much better than CCP.
Now the question is: Why India stop developing martial arts? I mean basicly all martial arts is chinese or japanese, why India didn't develop like those countries the martial arts?
Unfortunately I suspect was the British empire, they banned rebellious opposition from even carrying weapons, only the nahang Sikh opposed by using wooden dummy substitute ones if I recall correctly
Kalaripayattu is a traditional martial art of Keralam which was confined to Keralam till recent times.
How come at the beginning of the video Sadghuru states that it was "Around 16 centuries ago" but when the video begins for real it changes to "Around 15 centuries ago"?
It's "around" & not "precisely". So it's around 15th or 16th century. It would be contrary had he said precisely or not said around. 😊
Because he is just lying. No evidence, No historical record, yet Indians claim it as fact.

It isn't true. History shows Kung-Fu in China is older than Shaolin. Shaolin being mostly myth.
