Tom’s acting in that Clark and Lana scene is so sweet. It’s hard to buy a 25 year old actor as a 15 year old kid shy about his crush, but Tom plays it with innocence and naïveté that really work. I almost think his lack of acting experience was a plus. Best Clark Kent actor after Christopher Reeve

      @craigrussell3062 2 роки тому +16

@@MKPiatkowski Dean Cain did a good contrast to Reeve's take on Clark - confident and assertive instead of meek and weak - which is closer to how Tom played the character. Dean Cain's Superman was a little goofy, though. Christopher Reeve is the only one in the history of the franchise who actually convinced me that a pair of glasses and a different hairstyle could be enough to fool people into thinking Clark wasn't Superman. (Which is why Smallville's choice not to have Clark actually become Superman over the course of the series was a smart move.)

@@craigrussell3062 Agreed that Cain's Superman didn't quite gel, yet he's my fave Clark. I loved his wittiness and intelligence. And you're right, Tom played that line as well. It would have been very hard to convince anyone in the Smallville world that Clark wasn't Superman.

Rosie is the MAN. Think about this. As recent as roughly 7 years ago, Tom was not going to comic cons. Crowds for years wished he was there, as he was core of the show. Rosie not only showed him the way at cons, but if you asked smallville fans that Tom would actually rewatch episodes, but do all of them in order, then talking with Rosie about it. Hell would freeze be4 I saw that coming. The best gift to us fans. Rosenbaum rocks, support all his shit, and sorority boys is criminally underrated.

Yeah, I'm not sure how anyone addresses the crimes she was convicted of in a light-hearted podcast like this; it is probably for the best that they just not bring it up, but they shouldn't feel bad about discussing the character Chloe or how she contributed to the show because at the time, Chloe was beloved. They can separate their comments about the character from the actress. I am very sad knowing about what Allison Mack did, but she's confessed and serving her time now, and I hope she's learning from this mistake so she will be a better citizen and member of society in the future. Chloe was a great character, and they should feel free to mention her without feeling obligated to discuss Allison, imho.
I'm also enjoying this podcast. :)

It is a little funny that they haven't shared any real behind the scenes stuff about her, although Tom has already praised her acting as someone who knew what they were doing really well, I forget exactly when but something like "she could do 10 things at once when I was still trying to figure out what was going on". So it's not like they're avoiding mentioning her name or saying anything positive about her, her scenes, or her character. But, I'm sure it is just emotionally unpleasant to casually bring her up unless they have a specific point they're trying to say. Michael has talked about her criminal troubles on his personal podcast once or twice - was it the one where he had Tom himself on, I forget? - and I would be surprised if a similar conversation didn't happen at least once on this show.

i loved this episode of smallville. the ending is one of my all time favorite endings. the song by Binocular playing, Lana meets Clark on the field and he tells her his reason for playing wasn't there anymore (as she wasn't a cheerleader anymore)
this felt like the first time Lana and Clark really connected

I love this episode. I know yall joke about freak of the week episodes, and Season 1 was largely comprised of these. But I think they really work, they provide action, they built up the lore in the show, and set up opportunities for call-back appearences in later seasons.

I really enjoyed some of the early freak of the week episodes because it allowed for more episodic story telling, something you don't see in a lot of modern TV, and it gave the show that horror sci-fi feel, similar to The X-Files, and I also love that Mark Snow did the music for both Smallville and The X-Files, his music really set the tone for me.

Hi, Michael & Tom! Not only did young people watched Smallville, but a mom of 5 watched it as well. Never really knew Smallville was on TV until my son mentioned there was a show about the life of Superman was on. Ok, I am a fan of Superman. I would watch the reruns of George Reeves, The Adventures of Superman. My dad took me to see the movie with Christopher Reeves. Believe it or not I was 16 when the 1st movie hit theaters, the same age my son was when Smallville came out. I just want to say, the Smallville family of actors did an excellent performance honoring each character. Since I had a few teenagers back then, it was just a few TV shows I would let my kids watch. If there were a few PG moments, it was an excellent time to discuss with my kids to keep our communication open.
A funny note to mention: Back of the first of this year, my adult daughter who still lives at home, binged watch all seasons of Smallville with me. It took us 4 1/2 months to do it too!! It’s great you’re doing this podcast. 😝🤣🥰🤗❤️

You may be right that why Smallville was a hit was that people wanted a hero. But the hero we identified with wasn’t Superman-it was Clark Kent, this guy who was just trying to figure out the world and himself. And though he sometimes made wrong choices, he always found a way to do the right thing. And that was the hero the world needed.

One of my favorite S1 eps.
    1) Music : Zed Renegade Fighter, Sum 41 Motivation, and Binocular You. Three of my faves from the show.
    2) Dan Lauria was a great guest star and played Walt really well.
    3) Great action with multiple saves from Clark with Kwan and Chloe and the fighting with Clark/Walt.
    4) Good humor moments like Clark catching the football to protect Chloe and zipping it back into the guy's stomach as well as Lana's mishaps at the Beanery and Lex's "Not even close" when asked if it was his order. LMAO
    5) Clark/Johnathan scenes in this are really good and it also establishes Clark's desire for normalcy and the burden he has to carry of being different.
**Also really good Clark/Lana moments in this too. The end scream on the field with "You" from Binocular playing was really awesome.

I was 5 yrs old when I first watched this show obsessively, and by god did i love it. Tom as clark was legit my hero. Special effects and stuff wasnt common so watching those scenes were soo awesome. Maybe its cuz I was a kid but I absolutely never had a problem with the freak of the week in fact I looked forward to seeing who the villian would be in each episode and how clark would save the day. I just remember always squinting my eyes everywhere I'd go acting like I could see through walls and don't get me started about my relationship with the color green. Lmao I would always act like any rock-like substance with green on it was kryptonite and would act accordingly as the kryptonian I thought myself to be. Oh god I was such a wierdo lol I'd even try to mimic clarks mannerisms like clenching my teeth for the jawline emphasis. This podcast brings back alot of... funny/cringe/obsessive memories, but hey I was 5-12 during these moments. I mean guys I was soo young I didnt even know this was a show about superman until the end of season 2 beginning of Season 3 (I was 7 or 8) where Jor-el Branded Clark with that mark on his chest, which made me go hold up a sec, lol & after a little bit of research I felt soo dumb lol. Jeez I was a true smallville freak

Also: in defense of Ryan mentioning socio-political commentary; I think the show was steeped in it, not just regarding 9/11. I mean, one could easily discuss the allegorical comparison between Clark's powers and say homosexuality, gender dysphoria or various mental conditions and disorders or more simply people just going through puberty and dealing with the physical and emotional aspects of that - in that he represents what so many people go through in attempting to suppress or hide these conditions due to social AND political pressures. I think Ryan was on to something a little broader than he realized.

Smallville was always my family's favorite show when I was growing up. My dad was a massive Superman fan for his whole life and got me and my brother into Smallville as soon as the pilot dropped. For all 10 seasons my brother and I would make sure to never make plans for the day and time that a new episode would air so we could sit and watch it with our dad.
As soon as the seasons came out on DVD my dad bought them all and we would rewatch them together for years. And when he started succumbing to Parkinson's we would still go to his house and watch it with him, even as he had a harder and harder time remembering what happened in each episode.
So now that he's gone, he passed the DVDs on to me and I haven't had the heart to watch them again. But listening to you two go through them brings a smile to mine and my brother's faces every week and reminds us so much of all those years watching our dad's favorite show. Why did people get in the show and stuck by it?
For our household and friends that’s got us into it. The characters of Lex and Clark was very compelling. Tom Welling is a great looking Superman, his demeanor/body language /facial expressions are very interesting, plus the character of Clark going through his changes is a metaphor for everyone’s high school experience.
Clarks mom and dad and the dynamic between Clark and his Dad especially was great to watch because, if you are a fan of the comics you know what’s coming. And in my household we loved Lex Luthor, and loved how much of a nice friend he was knowing how it turns out.
Yes, freak of the weak in a small town requires one to suspend a lot disbelief, but whatever it’s an entertaining show. We felt like every episode in season one started out like X-Files then the credits and Title intro hit, then watching the dynamic of the actors above was the core for us. Allison Mack was also an amazing actor in this show. We were half to see they changed her slow-mo in her credit in the title intro. Who picked that scene to use 🤦🏻‍♂️ haha.

The "villians" and challenges are creativ and great to watsh. 4. It is a action series with human aspekts of beeing a "hero" and doing right things even they dont look right to other people. 5. It is about beeing you stay to you, build your own personality and not just with the main character. Lex Luther, the newspaper girl (sorry dont know her name), Lana, etc. You grow with them and see how they became how they becam.

Is it just me or does Ryan have a crappy attitude? Not about any one thing in particular, just in general. He always seems like he doesn't want to be there, and he gives all these thinly-veiled insults about the show barely disguised as compliments. Like during the Favorite Scene Game at the end he says "Scene 2, fencing with your dad. That was...over-the-top." and then "Scene 3, fire sprinklers, cause, what a weird effect." Neither over-the-top nor weird are positive descriptors.
I mean, no offense to the guy, I'm sure he's a good dude and all, but if he doesn't want to be part of the podcast he shouldn't be. And who knows, it could just be that he's not comfortable in front of the camera. But either way, I feel like SOMEONE should recognize that fact and put him back behind the camera.

I think Tom knows this episode overall, is an average episode. Or slightly worse than average. But he doesn't want to potentially hurt anybody's feelings. But a first time watcher wouldn't see it or realize it. Only a person who's watched the whole series a few times would realize it. I gotta say overall, minus the series premier and the season finale was kind of slow. Smallville didn't really get kicking until season 2 imo. Due to the Whitney/bf storyline part of season 1, it bogged season 1 down alot, I think.

Love these episodes, look forward to watching them each Wednesday morning while starting up my day at work. One thing you guys gotta get over though is the freak of the week, especially in the first few seasons basically every episode is a freak of the week episode. Just how it is

A few months back I found Smallville series on Prime video. After watching a few episodes with a different meteor freak in each one I stopped watching. I found the theme repititive and a bit boring. However, I gave it another try and finished the entire series in a matter of weeks. And I am glad that I did! The journey of Clark during his teenage years to early adulthood until he becomes Superman is what I loved most. And now I am rewatching the show along with your recently discovered podcast. I like how honest and open Michael and Tom are while reminiscing about the series. Keep up the good work.
