I drove a brand new r50 in 1972 and spent many hours hauling iron ore from a Minnesota mine. In the summer I drove truck and then in the winter went to college. This truck was so well built even I couldn't destroy it. Every so often the soot caught fire in the hallow box channels would catch fire and shoot flames out the back of the box. You needed to avoid driving near wooded areas or wood buildings tell it burned itself out. Then a few months later you would get another fire. I have many memories of the fine machine, too bad your truck is going for scrap.
well it was a 201 LD original down to the mud flaps, and i bitched enough to get my boss to look a little harder and find it a home where it works. thanks for the offer though! shes alive!
AH! That engine sound! I haven't heard that since I was a kid. My dad used to drive these and the R85 in Pennsylvania . Got to ride in the 85. That would have been 76 or so.
GM bought Euclid from the Armington family in 1953 and made dump trucks, bulldozers, scrapers and articulated loaders. In 1968 an antitrust trust suit against GM came about for having too much of the market according to the Government. GM sold Euclid dump to White Motor Corp. and couldn't compete against White Motor for a number of years. When White got into financial trouble Euclid was sold to Daimler - Benz who kept the co. for 5 yrs. before selling it to Clark Equipment .Both Euclid and Michigan loaders were sold to Volvo, thus the VME nomenclature. Eventually Michigan was dropped as a brand name and Euclid was sold to Hitachi, hence the end of the Euclid brand. As for the Detroit Diesels ,yes they were loud and smoky and set up right they would keep going. Also remember when the sulfur was the taken out of the diesel fuel a lot of the smoke went away. Also many leaks went away with new sealants. Remember these engines had a common rail system back in 1939! You're right, 1Euclid would put the ADT'S to shame.
Why the hell would anyone want to cut a fully working truck up for scrap? It will clearly out last anything made in the last ten years. Without question. It will also be cheaper maintenance wise. These trucks just keep going and going.
I believe you, this one was safe enough, the brakes worked well and it had a transmission retarder. however the dump cylinders you mentioned might have been an issue. if I remember correctly the one in the video shot hydraulic fluid over the hood out of the third stage seal. the other one I ran had a 600 horse cummins swapped in but the brakes faded throughout the day so you had to adjust the slack adjusters at least once a day. I hear ya man they aren't without problems at 60 years old.
Yeah it might crack your driveway! But seriously that thing sounds badass comin up that small hill with that Jimmy screaming! I assume it’ll haul 50 tons of rock and dirt.
Save these old trucks. there part of American history. these old Euclid's delivered most of the essentials materials 4 the United States to become the great country it is
Out with the old, in with the new. But the old equipment was very cool. Just the sound and raw power was awesome, before OSHA, EPA, and dweebs with laptops.
Having V-71 power, I would guess the build date would had to have been pre-1975 because anything later would've had a 92 in it; is that right? Anyway, it's a bitchin' truck. Thanks for sharing it with us -- and for saving it from the scrappers by doing so, evidently.
it was shot outside of Mission B.C. Canada at the old stave lake quarries, definitely pre 1975 I think its actually a 1969 but im not certain, I do know its a 201LD though so if you want to know more check out PAmining channel he has an excellent video with all the info on this model. its called 201LD Dcumentary.
I wanna see them pieces of shit in 50 years ha they will have been scrap for 20 years. thanks for the vid. My uncle had 2 of them hauling in his gravel pit in the 70s he would not let me drive them because he said if I ever got in one he was afraid that I would never get out. I was 16 and been around them big Detroits for a few years now I believe he was right.
Well that is half good news but far better than hearing it went to the melting pot. If you hear of more such old haul trucks under threat could you tell me about them? I have a decent home for them and a couple hours a day work for them to enjoy till my days to are numbered
