    Love those twin detroits! I want to hear it working! I lived at grandma’s house in md from age 2-4, I remember the early morning sounds of a detroit wound up and working, the smell of juniper and honeysuckle, and the fresh milk in the glass bottles with the paper tops in the cold box on the front stoop. I was up at the crack of dawn and would drain one of the bottles all by myself every morning.

    I got to ride on one as a teenager. They where using it to cut a road over a mountain. One of the radiators had to be removed to repair they had to use a small crane to take it off.

    I don't know the reason for splitting them but they did in Arizona. Ashton const. of Tucson az had one. That particular tractor was used in the film " Lilies of the Valley" operated by Sidney Poitier ( do I have that spelled correctly )

    These guys are 30mins from me ,they have a Komatsu 575 on display, it was used on a coal.mine west coast south island New Zealand, I was short listed to operate one of these bout 15 years ago , they needed.3 operators for shift work on the 3rd 575 that was.being setup at the time ,Dozers were set up for remotes so if they fell into an old workings drive the operator could be.on the hill out of harm's way

    • @SteamCrane
      @SteamCrane 2 роки тому

      Sure don't want a seat belt on this job! With no roll cage, loading overwidth on steel on a high trailer, your only hope is to jump if she slides off. On a low disconnect trailer, she would probably just end up cattywampus off the side, but on a high trailer, over she goes. A spine trailer would be good for this job.
      Outriggers with planks on the trailer would help. I've known of several fatal loading accidents, and personally seen some close calls. Always think about that when we drive by one nearby farm, previous owner died loading.
      In the US, they used to split these for weight and overwidth.

      Those fold up ramps must weight a couple tons each . I ran D10 T a few years back and it was $8k to break down just cab & blade /cartridge then just short haul was $8 to $ 12 k so you don’t see them back in the yard very often .
      If I recall it was close to 200,000 lbs or 100 ton and the trailer was 9 axles including the two jeep trailers
      it didn’t take long for the novelty to wear off ripping solid rock 14 hrs 7days for 6 weeks , I think I pushed dirt for two days of 45
