How to See The Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn December 21, 2020

- This video covers how to observe the Great Conjunction.
The Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn will happen on December 21, 2020 when they form a double planet by coming within 0.1 degrees of each other. The rare planetary alignment hasn't occurred this close in nearly 800 years.
Saturn will appear to look just as close to Jupiter as some of its own moons.
The event is observable from anywhere on Earth - assuming the skies are clear.
This will be the 'greatest' Great Conjunction for the next 60 years, until 2080. The two planets won't make such a close approach again until sometime after the year 2400. - Наука та технологія

You can add your scope and lenses in Stellarium and it will show you how the planets (or any object) will look in your camera. Your fish head nebula project looks incredible!

@@ChucksAstrophotography You could even use your phone to create a 360 photo of your backyard. It can then be used as a custom landscape in Stellarium showing you exactly when obstructions will get in your way for any object. Nice. I checked a spot near the top of my neighborhood where I can set up my scope, and I should be good down to 2.5deg off the horizon. It certainly helps that the 21st is about the shortest day of the year to maximize viewing time!

I’m using the asi533 mc pro ( I hope yours gets there on time😬)paired with a redcat 51 I live in a bortle 5, would you use any filters with this setup like an L-extreme or L- enhanced ?

I’m hoping for clear skies right around that event. I picked up an ASI533mc a few months ago, I hope yours arrives in time. It’s my first dedicated camera and I’m loving it so far.

Btw, as someone else suggested to add your scope and camera details will show you framing. You can also do a custom ground / location and add your own place This helps a LOT with seeing where obstructions will be and when they'll clear them :)
Right, Stellarium has all those features, I just need to take the time to set it all up.

FYI: You can calculate FOV using Stellarium, it's nice because it will also do EQ orientation.

Random question. I have a Polaris 130 it's not the best it was less than $200. Should I just get a better telescope or is there eyepieces for instance that I can buy for this to make it better. I feel like it should have more power for how large it is
Have you ever looked at Saturn through it - can you see the rings? If you get a 2x Barlow, that would help. Not sure about the eyepieces since I never use them.

Chuck, given any though to planetary camera settings. Saturn is always very dime and to bring it in may blow Jupiter out.
Exactly, I'm wondering the same thing and just thought I would have to experiment when I have them in the same frame. I'm not sure how to solve this yet.
Another question I have is does anyone use the app called Skyview? I feel like it's a couple degrees off obviously but how do I fix that problem or is there a better app that I can download just for quick reference purposes
In my case, when I use Stellarium, it doesn't matter if it's off. I went outside and l saw how low the planets were first - and then I looked at where Stellarium said they were. So if Stellarium says the planets are 10 degrees high (whether or not it's off by a few degrees), I know exactly how low they are in the sky when I look outside.

Chuck, right where you can choose object, right beside where you chose M1, there is another for solar system objects where you can any planet in our solar system.
How to have seen the Great Conjunction? By having been in some other place than Austria.
Who knew that I was this Lucky to see this Event. Just so you guys know, the Closest Jupiter and Saturn will come to Each other on December 21st is 0.1 Degrees which is the Closest in Solar History. The Last time we saw this Double Planet was in 1226 during Medieval Times

An important question, what gain and exposure to use in order to capture both planets?

@@ChucksAstrophotography in that video you set 40 ms and 139 gain for jupiter and 240 ms and 200 gain for Saturn. I'm planning to imagine both planets in the same field of view during the conjunction. I wonder if I'll be able to find an adequate set of parámeters, not to burn Jupiter nor underexpose Saturn.

I'll be using my Canon 90D with my 70-300 zoom lens. While it may not look as awesome as your photos turn out. I should be able to make out the rings of Saturn. Even if just barely.
I plan to shoot at the full 32.5 megapixels in RAW+Jpeg. Being a cropped frame camera my zoom will get a bit more push at 480mm. Not that that will do much in astrological terms. But the closer the better.

I actually bought the ASI533MC for the RASA when I saw it for $100 off. Are there other advantages for the ASI294MC camera?
@@ChucksAstrophotography That's my problem - I want to buy an astro camera (I'm using a Canon T6i DSLR now with a Celestron 8" HD Edge) but I really don't know how to select one - there are so many different models. I'd like to do both planetary and deep sky. I've heard that small pixels are good for planetary so maybe the best solution is the more expensive one - get two different cameras. I wanted something better than the DLSR. The 294 has lower resolution than the 533 if I remember correctly. Not sure how to decide about resolution and pixel size. I would think that higher resolution and lower pixel size would be best for everything for a given sensor size. I've enjoyed watching your videos for several years now. Thanks!

@@ChucksAstrophotography I might have the opportunity to see it for 20mins or so when it's sunset. Or I'll try to photograph it during the day, which should work too :D. Just picked up a C9.25 as well, with my ASI 183 I might actually get a decent image, with a FOV of 0.32° x 0.22°
ow your altitude is much lower i see, the path of the planets are much lower here in my house.
After the planets the helix nebula will be there also.

Jupiter and Saturn will collide. Jupiter will consume Saturn and form a dwarf star that will be our Second sun.
It's like a sunset with the moon and stuff but with planets which is a lot more rare. The last time something like this happened was mediabel times 900 - 1300
