How to View the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn

  • In late December 2020, the two largest planets in our Solar System, Jupiter and Saturn, will be so close in the sky that they’ll both be visible through a telescope eyepiece at the same time. Such close passes are known as Great Conjunctions. The Great Conjunction of 2020 will be the closest in almost 400 years.
This video explains what Great Conjunctions are and tells you how and when you may be able to see the Great Conjunction of 2020. It also describes what you may expect to be able to see by eye, using binoculars, or through a telescope.
In late December, astronomers from the University of Exeter are also planning to try to live-stream a view of the Great Conjunction from a telescope over the internet. For more information, sign-up at:

The simulations of Jupiter and Saturn in the sky were produced using the Stellarium software, which is free, open source, and works on a variety of computer platforms: stellarium.org
The animation of the orbits of the planets was produced using a modified version of the Python code written by ChongChong He and available at: github.com/chongchonghe/Pytho...

You to eh? There's an eclipse in north Africa later this decade, a really good one, totality over 6 minutes near Luxor. Now Luxor is a famously hot and sunny place but if you hear on the news that it was cloudy there on the day then you can be quite certain that I made it to the event.

I notice this event several months ago when playing with Stellarium. I realize it is all simple mathematics, but whether it be a sunrise, an ISS flyover, or a once in 400 year conjunction, it never ceases to astound me how a prediction so much earlier can come to past

It is a great beautiful animation for any layman to understand how Jupiter and Saturn align with each other in a particular line of sight. Have not seen any other work depicting this concept so clearly so far. Thanks for bringing this out. In our educational channel as well, my little son and I have posted a general awareness quiz covering Dec 2020 events including this great conjunction. Interested ones can watch our works as well. It is great to be on this learn and share youtube platform where we can all form a like minded continuous-learning community around us. Our best wishes to this channel as well.

If these two planets are visible in the night sky in southern hemisphere for months, then what's new about the conjunction of 21st? I mean, we see the planets and it means they're close to us and will just align in that day, why people make conspirancy theories about that day? Thank you, Dr. Bates. And thank you for your animations of star and star cluster formation. I have used them (with attribution) in several presentations I have made over the years for my astronomy club.
In California, our window of opportunity on the 21st will include Ganymede in transit across Jupiter's disk. Ganymede's shadow will begin transiting when Jupiter is just above the horizon so we will probably miss that part. I still need to check other nights either side of the 21st for other planet and shadow transits.
With the UK eight hours ahead of us, your window of opportunity on the 21st occurs before the transit. I didn't check other nights, but you will probably have some planet or shadow transit worth catching.
