VOLTRON is celebrating it's 40th anniversary! Are you feeling old yet?
In celebration, Playmates Toys has released a new set of Lions that combine to form the mighty Voltron! But, don't these look familiar? Well, yes - Playmates Toys actually first released this set back in 2017.

I wouldn’t call it affordable. The collector scalpers are selling them for like 100 a piece. I wish I had that much free time to camp at stores but I have a life, family, and career. Sometimes I think toy companies are shipping directly to these scalpers to take in bigger profit. I will just get my boy the shirt.

I got so lucky back in 2017. Target had put the Dreamworks Voltron Lions on Clearance. But somehow the 2nd wave classic, were on the same SKU, so they went straight to clearance prices. I got them for $9.99 a piece
Same story as my experience. I was worried about being late to the party but reaped the clearance rewards this time.
The '84 Voltron set was being sold for $60 at Walmart 4 years ago 😮
I really wish I had picked them up years ago but I didn't have the money back then. Oh well.

@@RoyalKnightVIII well they are also smaller, so maybe they could release them by team, so basically air team 5 pack, land team 5 pack. You get the idea, how much would they cost? Depends, I can honestly see them only charging a little more for each pack if needed
I wish they'd recreate the original diecast Voltron and put that out.
Yeah looking at these in person with the gray plastic when I'm so used to seeing diecast makes them look really cheap and crappy

Blitzway,Bandai and Threezero have had there diecast voltrons but the catch is there expensive.

Playmate was upfront from the beginning and said they were reissue. It’s just a great chance for people who couldnt get the original release to finally get it. Although most likely at a higher price.

@@Rob-z7k I thought it looked cool, but never picked it up because I’m not a fan of the connection points for the arms. Look too damn flimsy and breakable. But since you own it, how do you feel about the connectors?

It's actually at the same price as the earlier release.
Arms aren't pegged all the way.
I was thinking the same. I have the original release and the arms are pegged in all the way with no issues. It also balances better.

I remember back in 18 I could not find the red lion to complete my set, I finally found it online on Walmart and when I went to pick it up I got an unexpected surprise… two boxes with my name on them… I tried to tell the nice lady that there must be some mistake and she said oh don’t worry just take them they have your name on them and they had to be shipped here from another location and there was some issue with returning them, so I took my boxes and got lucky. I keep one mint in package as it looks great
Pixel Dan I want Playmates Toys to make action figures of the pilots & villains from the original 84 anime show we haven't gotten merchandise of the characters in a long time.
Easter Egg… this is exactly how the lions were packaged back in the 80s when Matchbox released them.
How much is this one going for? I love the Voltron robots, the Lion Force & The Mobile Force but at this point collecting has been difficult due the price tags on these gems.
Leave it to Pixel Dan to mistransform this toy. Giant robots really aren't his forte.

These are Target exclusive from my understanding. That means it is hit or miss as I have been on their website to tell me none where available at any nearby location only to go to nearby location to find what was said they did not have.

I always loved how regal the black lion always is, in every iteration. And tbh blue lion is always the second best
Didn't SOC put out a Voltron? I wonder how it compares to this one.
The SOC Voltron is very nice, probably my favorite toy iteration. The price point is around $300. It has a nice transformation, very similar to the Matchbox figure with a better face sculpt and lions that are very poseable. It also comes with a slew of weapons for both Voltron and the lions as well as a weapons rack for them to be displayed upon. The Blitzway may be even nicer, but it's also more than twice as expensive. And I stand by the SOC also due to the fact that there is a SOC Vehicle Voltron in the same scale, which is great for display purposes.

God I remember having the metal ones as a kid. Voltron was probably one of my top three favorite shows that with thundercats, GI Joe, transformers. Those were like to go to is when I was a kid kid.

I could’ve sworn my target store got them for the 35th anniversary in 2019 could just be my area getting these a year late to actually coincide with 35yrs and were their version of matty right I only had panosh place Voltron but I’m collecting them now
Bought the first release, wish it was a tad smaller. It's just too big to play with, doesn't hold its own weight well and even with little playtime the joints has taken its toll and become terribly loose on mine.
Okay, I've watched so many of Dans videos, I have ignored it till now, why are his hands constantly covered in wounds? If that's from a cat, kill it.
I like this Voltron. I don't care about the electronics. I always turn those off or take the battery out. I wish they had engineered the shoulder joint better. I can't stand how the entire black lion shoulder rotates instead of those locking it and have the socket rotate.
I can't stop Reminisce about my Past. I loved Voltron Cartoons in the 80s since I was a Kid. I love the New Reissued Voltron Lions Toys. I'm glad they brought it back. It's Definitely a must have. Thanks Pixel Dan for the Info. 🤩😃😁👍👍
What about the one Wal-Mart released in December 2020. I'm guessing it's the same as well? All 5 lions came in one box for $59.97. Now the price is $109.99.
It makes absolutely ZERO sense how this product rollout was handled. Initially ship two cases of two of the same figure, that's 4 black lions on wave 1. Then ship one case of 4 different figures, that's red, blue, green and yellow, on wave 2. Thus you're left with 4 collectors at each location looking for the same single case of figures to complete their Voltron.
Those who purchased the black lion in wave 1, basically locked in their purchase of the rest of the set, that's 4 other lions. Instead of understanding this and releasing wave 2 in a 1:1 ratio, that's one case of wave 2 (4 lions) per 1 black lion shipped.... They opted for a 4:1 ratio, one case of wave 2 (4 lions) per 1 black lion shipped.
At the end of the day Playmates could have potentially shipped/sold 2 cases of wave 1 and 4 cases of wave 2 per store. Instead they chose to upset, potentially, 3 collectors per store. Created, potentially, 3 unnecessary returns per store. And turned off, potentially, 3 collectors, per store, to your brand.

I am personally disappointed with this figure. The figure can’t even stand up on its own and pose without slumping or falling over, it’s really frustrating. Great idea, poorly executed. It has all of these wonderful extras with the sounds and quotes, but falls flat with its actual functionality and posing ability.
why you guys never say the truth it's trash plan and simple, but I guess that's how it is when toys are giving for free...

The voices are not the original voice actors from the show. Disappointing! Probably a copyright issue, playmate’s didn’t want to pay for the original voices or sound effects. So the cheaply made their own.

You don't have the arms in the ports all the way. Try snapping the arms in the ports more, that's why you're having trouble with the sound effects and the arms keep coming out easily.
It's a great inexpensive Voltron and I have the 2017 one and the Threezero version for a more high end. I keep the Playmates one in my classroom!
I went to three targets picking a few of the classic tmnts that i missed out on. I didn’t see one voltron lion. The hunt continues in Maryland. They dont even show up on the target app yet. I sold my previous set new in box years ago and kept the dreamworks lions. I am noticing the larger companies are releasing throwbacks with no updates maybe for business reasons and to get guaranteed money on older products. Which is good for classic toy collectors. Not so much for innovation though.

Yeah / it could silver paint especially on the grey plastic parts on the Lions / for them to look better / & on the weapons to / maybe they will do it in updated version & also add the eyes in the Lions to light up /
I will pass on this version and wait to see what they do with a new version in the future
Side note the tail doesn’t go fully inside the Lion / maybe they will fix that with a updated version & last but not least have a set that has all the robot Lions in one box set
I got the Voltron from 2017. They could have gotten the voice actors from the show for the toy.
No die cast . Pass. One thing transformers did right was if they reissue anniversary of original toys the release the old mold of original toys .
Are the lions numbered, they don;t look like they have the numbers on them. And the Lions that are the arms, on the old Voltrons the tail was the peg.

They just reissued it because they know they didn't have to create a whole new toy, but all the collectors will still go out and buy it again just because it has the 40th anniversary logo on it. They'll probably put the exact same thing out in 10 years with a 50th ann. logo and people will still buy it too!!
It is a sound business strategy, and it has worked well for them with TMNT for the last 30+ years.

This 40th anniversary release of Voltron is exactly the same as we got in 2017. The only difference is the packaging.

2024 is a re-release of 2017. If you missed 2017, now is a good time to pick up a very reasonably priced Golion/ Lion Force set. Pick it up if you have kids around (i.e you're a parent or aunt/uncle) and keep it somewhere the kids can manhandle it. It's not the good Blitzway set that costs a kidney and testicle that you don't want small hands breaking.

Nice looking figure for the price. However, I can attest that the sound effects are not original voice actors from the show; they are clearly recreations.
My Voltron toy experience. Back when we got the diecast Voltron here in the states I was getting $5 a week in allowance. Voltron was $60 and I saved up for 12 weeks to get him. In that version the Red and Green lions used their tails to attach to the black lion. After a couple times of transforming him the retainer in the shoulder of the black lion broke and the tail of the red lion couldn't ever peg in again. Saved for 3 months and the toy broke in about a week.
