Michael is finally able to assess the latest classic Beast King Golion / Voltron chogokin, this time from Blitzway, and there's a LOT to discuss.
Their timing is pretty good in one regard; this being released during your tenth anniversary made for a really nice intro! Excellent video, and if you feel that this is the end of the journey, I say so be it. I'm not a Voltron fan, but all of your videos on it are really entertaining, and I've been in construction work more than long enough to know that not everything that works on a two-dimensional surface is going to translate into the real 3-D world. It looks like they've really done the job right with what can be done now, so enjoy it and great job all around.
Simply amazing. And, how ironic that a near $700 item didn't need to be crowd-funded in order for it to be produced and successful. That's just weird.
I didn't know Blitzway was worth a billion dollars
@@bh47 it's not. Hasbro is the billion dollar company.
@@retroblasting OK I get it now.
Has the level of success been established? I hope it does, but they have to sell-through.
Except its not sold in stores....They don't have to ship large quantities to retail, they only have to worry about 40 year olds finding a website and ordering it....Hasbro does a lot wrong, but there is a massive difference between something sold on the internet and sold at retail.
I collect things, but I can also grasp that some things just aren't made specifically for me. Some toy lines are literally meant to be toy lines for children and not for the rude, idiot adults that rush out to the store to buy 13 of each thing so they can sit on them....But in reality kid doesn't care about He-Man, kids doesn't care about 1987 TMNT, doesn't really care about Original Trilogy Star Wars toys or that they have 65 POA and a display stand...I'm also not a garbage parent so I don't tell my child what he is going to be into like some "special" adults
My kid literally just wants to play with things, doesn't want to pose things, doesn't want to display things, doesn't care that something maybe if sat on it long enough and not touched might be valuable in the future...YES toy companies and the lack of toy stores have ruined some things. BUT so have the god damned adults. I cannot count the number of things that I cannot get my kid because the imbecile adults have rushed out or bot purchased 25 of them....Its not just the "billion dollar corporations" as some people love to proclaim are the only problem.
I was on the fence about this version mostly because I couldn't get Soul of Chogokin but then it was reissued and I picked it up. But when I saw videos of Blitzway battery issues it was the second turn off for me. The first turn off being that nearly $700 price tag. The third turn off was the panels that cover legs of the red and yellow lions in Voltron mode wasn't executed as well as I'd hoped. And last but not least he's not big enough for the price IMO. And like you I'm most impressed with the flight stand but it wasn't enough to sell me once the Chogokin version became available again. But I didn't think Soul of Chogokin was worth the price till I held it in my hands at toy show one day. Great video and commentary as always!
This Voltron figure, looks straight up....beautiful. I love action figures,I truly do but this figure is a masterpiece. It's out of my price range but I'm more than content with the Legendary Defender figure and Voltron 84 figure that are sat on my shelf.
Wow $700! It looks fantastic and I suppose we should all treat ourselves now and again. Delighted you are happy that you got it. And that's all that counts. You do however have a headache on how you will display it. The lions on the stand, standing with the characters on top or in full robot mode all looks brilliant.
Its a beautiful expression of 1980's childhood nostalgia. I have an original Matchbox with box, but I would sell it to have this one! Great review piece Mike!
Great video! This might be the most informative and detailed toy review I've ever seen. It's really well done.
Awesome review and toy. I was never into Voltron, but I am always impressed at the engineering of them
Just got mine! Really impressed with the tech and engineering. Nostalgic value pricless. Great review.👍
Your display idea, with the robot raised and behind the lions, should be stunning. Excellent review of a beautiful toy.
Living vicariously through your collection and videos, it’s nice to get a chance to enjoy figures I love but could never budget for or have space to display.
💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Can't do the $700 price tag but credit where credit is due, it looks FANTASTIC!!!!
Awesome review, I should have known you were already on top of it too!😁😁😁
I never really got into Voltron, but I did have several friends that had Lionbots. Your video was very informative Michael as usual. Thank you for your great expertise to this line as well as the toy industry. You my friend, hit another home run with this one, makes me want to go out and get into Voltron!
I just got my GX-71 a few weeks ago, and couldn't be happier. Ticks all the right boxes. It's just perfect. I have no desire for another Voltron.
Great job and well said. As a fellow collector myself who loves Voltron but also collects other pop culture items, I agree with you 100%. My Blitzway Voltron is on its way. I LOVE your idea for a display, and I may just do the same but again the Blitzway Voltron looks really good as Voltron as well. The fact Blitzway gets the Bandai Namco seal of approval to me is also a big deal and makes me think this might be Bandai's unofficial answer to a DX version of their own GX-71 Soul of Chogokin Voltron. This really is a dream project.
With so many amazing representations of iconic 80s robots including this and the mind-blowing, self-transforming Robosen Optimus Prime, I really hope someone gives us a collector grade combing Mighty Orbots figure. If they did that, I would happily add it to my collection and I would own amazing representations of my most memorable robots from the 80s. The fact that we have what we have more that 40 years later is not lost on me. Again, well done and thank you for sharing.
Maybe in a REMASTER Blitzway will add in the opening of ears for the Yellow Lion & the head opening up on the Blue Lion 🤔
Those 2 additions will make that Voltron, the ULTIMATE Voltron to get 🤔🤗
I can see the happiness in your eyes. It's like watching Capt. Raymond Holt doing a toy review. 😄
> Let This Be My Last Lionbot
Until the next one.
This is extremely nice Michael. Congratulations on the purchase. You are very very right when you say that Voltron was always an expensive toy. My parents couldn't afford the official thing for me so I was another kid that ended up with Lionbot, purchased from a local (and shady) mall store named "Winner Toy and Hobby". But, it was excellent I thought. This is something however well beyond any other Voltron I have seen over the years....but that price tag. I know this is the way toys are headed, but man, it's half of my rent. If this trend continues I don't know how I will be able to continue collecting years from now.
Wow, that thing is crazy! I love it!
Thanks for this video. Going with Blitzway!
Last one? Not anymore. Now you need the black version!
100% agree. I too will display it on Lion mode. Good idea on putting the Bandai GX-71 at the back. I will not use the light up feature after i messed up my Voltes V Volt-in box Crewzer 1 after the battery leaked. The display base and mini-figures made me choose this over the ThreeZero Voltron
I absolutely love the display box and flight stands , figures and presentation. But I couldn't buy the $700 fig as a deal maker. Not in a day and age of 3D printing. I will seek a comparable stand and figures out in third party market or make one myself for the ThreeZero figure.
Chogokin! I love that you compared the different versions by weight. There's nothing like the heft of a diecast Shogun or Gokaikin. Great review and very extensive. It looks like a beautiful toy. Your observation about the doors that hide the legs really gets at the point of how with modern tech we can make almost anything but do we want to if it gets too fiddly and complex. I only have the Popy/Matchbox version and the smaller ST version but I love your idea to display this in the lion form. That's a great display stand. Great video.
Lol! Awesome review as always! Personally, if the belt button was push and sounds came out. I probably like that more. Or just light up & sound display case with time showing. So every hour. Some sort sounds and light. Programmable.
A display stand for many Voltron figures . That shows time. Some lighting. And different soundscapes: roars, themes song, voices of characters. That can blue tube so you can program different things.
So probably at 6pm you hear Keith stating ready to form Voltron lol and at say 6am. Theme song lol Saturday morning lol.
Well now Blitzway is making Legendary Defender!
Are there enough people who like that version so much that they'd pay Blitzway prices?
@@retroblasting That’s a great question, and I have no idea. I am an 80s kid and prefer the original design, but I do like the Legendary Defender design as well. I’d probably pick it up so I could have both.
I justified buying the Blitzway Defender of the Universe because all I ever wanted as a kid was a Voltron and never got one!
Edit: Love your vids by the way!
I love all your suggestions. Maybe if they release a smaller SoC sized one, they can add Sven, add a hand stand Pidge, add the two head weapons on blue and yellow as well as the ability for the heads to go down. Remove all the light up features. Not sure if anything can be done with Black lion being able to sit. For this price point, I'm not sure why they didnt chrome all the lion weapons.
Now all we need is a company to make a few in scale robeasts
I think for LEDs they should do sort of like how the vintage liono required a separate battery pack to light up his eyes. Like have a remote batery box that plugs into a port somewhere on the figure to make it all light up. That way you can use regular batteries and not mess around with little tools.
I had only one gripe that prevented me buying this, but helped save my wallet and decide to stick with my chogokin:
The silhouette of the head which was of utmost importance to me (Especially since they got the face almost perfect),
Reminded me more of the toynami as the top of the head isn’t wide like the original bandai, or chogokin, but narrower, and was enough to sway me against getting this. It’s a beautiful robot, and I feel relieved that the head bugs me enough when I look at it, that the need to get this wasn’t as strong as it had been. Nice review!
I need get me a vintage voltron 1 these days
Never say never! Great review.
You seem to have ended the video with satisfying joy in your voice and expression. Yes.
Place the little figs in Boiling Water, then while still hot, dump in ice water. This should reset the plastic to original shape.
incredibly detailed review
I also have this one and love to keep this toy except my disappointment with one of features, lights & batteries.
I purchased this on Amazon just a month ago and after unboxing & assembled, I noticed the lights for lion arms (red/green) has defect batteries and not lit at all. I also have concern on the instruction for batteries for 2 lion feet (blue/yellow). Not only it was awful to remove the cover, the instruction on how to remove batteries could be confusing. It states "...press the metal plate of PART (A)..." and the diagram image doesn't show how to press the specific metal part so I ended up removing battery compartment by accident and cut the wire off. Then I requested an exchange for the whole toy and got the replacement. Now I have battery defects again for lion arms 😡. The only problem is hard to find new fresh BR-311 batts.
Good breakdown of the set. I saw this and I was amazed. I had bought the Toynami EX version because of how the Lions could sit in their cat poses. This one seems like an ultimate Voltron. If I were to get this one, it would be my last one. I really with the Matty Collector Voltron was better than it is. I think it's funny that the Matty Collector one is more expensive to get now than this one. I don't remember what the original Price was of that one, but I wanna say it would probably be about the same or a little more given you had 6 pilots and 5 lions PLUS you had to have a Matty Collector Subscription to even get it a "retail" in the first place. This will be my Voltron Holy Grail when I save enough money to get it. I appreciate your honest review of it.
The batteries in the red and green lions look like CR-316 which are used in fishing lures. Either that or CR-311 (hard to tell from a video).
They are already making a 23 inch version
I had been waiting for your review of this… last years Blitzway’s Inspector Gadget was one of the best figures I have seen in about 10 years… Their Waldo from earlier this year was a piece of garbage… meaning that I was very interested in seeing how they delivered this after a home run & a total fail…
GREAT JOB in detailing all the pros & cons including the price point historically always being a bit steep.
Lastly production value is spot on per usual and it was cool to see your trip down memory lane in the beginning of the video!
Well Done, Mr. French 👏 👏 👏
Love your videos Michael. Soul Of Chogokin was my last Lionbot. Maybe that company Fantasy Jewel that created the bootleg version of SOC will do the same for this version at half the cost?
I wish I met a woman like this, this man is so dam lucky
now just need the perfect vehicle voltron
Awesome 👍
Good for you.
??????
@@retroblasting I mean good for you having that Golion.
The lions look kind of cute/funny.
Hi Michael, great review! Question, why do so many versions of Voltron not include the lion numbers on them??
The animation did not include the numbers. That was something the toy makers added.
I needed one to match up against my 3rd party TF Predaking. I'm hoping the size is comparable when displayed together.
I had a GB36 when I was a kid, and I still have my G1 Optimus Prime. But with the progress of Transformers design and even engineering, it's really disappointing to see how little Voltron progressed in the same time.
Not gonna lie, the $700 price tag might dissuade most colectors but if you're a Voltron collector this might be the best version currently available on retail. If I can also nitpick I would've liked chrome individual lion weapons, a "Form Blazing Sword!" effects parts, and I would've liked the standing pilot figures to be posed just like in the end credits (Keith with his arm raised, Hunk sitting cross legged, Pidge doing a hand stand, etc). Otherwise, this is PURRFECT.
the soc was just to test the old versions and offer an improve version as a newer and better design based on what the fans and market wants. wait for the DX chogokin version, it will knock everyone out. Bandai always challenges new versions hahaha
You still have the 3 zeros Voltron to add to the collection.
my only gripe is they always make the arms so small
For me it's not over yet. I'll be getting threezero voltron next
Wait a second, you can buy a unicron for this price !
Also, you can buy original Metroplex and Tryptcion for this price, boxed I might add.
Come on now, you’re telling me about these imitation lions but we all know that you cannot challenge Predaking and the predacons.
I dropped my megaphone 📢 ahaha
The Unicron is of no interest to us. We also already have the G1 Transformers that are of interest to us.
I feel you on being selective. I like watching your channel foe that but of nostalgia but my real hobby is HEMA & collecting weapons/armor from history (as well as some reproductions). Its just not feasible to get involved that deep in all the things im interested in. Which i admit I have an abnormally large range if things that i like. It sucks. Just not enough time, space etc
There is the ko now
That thing's crap
@@timothyward8695 no it's perfect
I hate to be the Debbie Downer but this ain't the last Voltron a collector will need. It has restricted waste articulation. And it's only a matter of time before this figure rereleases with but with waste articulation next time.
A great review and mini history of Voltron lion toy attempts... The Blitzway version is beautiful 😍 Thanks, Michael.
I’m a sucker for Voltron and I bought this one. Highly recommended if you have the money. If not I hear ThreeZero is coming out with a cheaper option. Don’t know how good it’s gonna be but, we’ll see. With this one I don’t need another.
That Threezero one has me conflicted. It is obviously smaller, but everything else I've gotten from them was so amazingly well engineered that I really want to see what it has to offer. On the other hand, if I wait for it to come out, there's a good chance the Blitzway will be sold out by then.
@@Freefall347 I had the same struggles..but ultimately gambled on the the ThreeZero for the reason i posted above. But also seeing how there is alot of competition in the Voltron combiner fig market, going with the newest one , could have its benefits. We will see how it is...
They should have had the 5 lion contrails light-up in their respective colors... would have been easy to implement with an LED in each of their 5 colors shining through the acrylic.
Great idea! Maybe I can modify mine to do that when I get one.
shit with how cheap led strips are now and easy to independently install without fuckin anything up if u wanna remove them it should be a relatively easy thing to do and at a cheap price. I say go for it but if u do it come back and post pics
My family all chipped in and got me this for my 50th- which was last September. Just got it on Thursday and I can’t wait to assemble it!
You have a great cool family!
When Michael said Voltron can dance it made me think of that you got served robot chicken sketch.
I just want to shoutout @5prostudio for their design and engineering on this figure. A lot of people are calling this the Blitzway Voltron, but 5PRO are the robot guys behind it.
Yes I get it. Just wanted to give credit where it's due.
Appreciate your no-nonsense sit down toy reviews! You put things in great perspective and really nail what we are all feeling! Thanks for your video Michael!
This just so happen to pop up on my feed. As a collector myself, I have to admit this is an excellent rendition of Go-Lion!
Man I miss my matchbox Voltron from childhood. That thing was the coolest.
Thanks for making an amazing, nostalgic, historic, detailed video. This Voltron absolutely deserved it. Absolutely amazing review! I’m so excited and I’m definitely going to pose him like you said. Lions in flight with SOG behind them. Perfection!! No other way possible. Thanks again!
Great review as usual; all the pros and cons down to the smallest and the reasoning behind them along with comparisons. Incredilbe figure. After this point anything better that comes out will either be the same but just a few improving tweaks (but only making it worth buying for those who don't yet have this one and who can afford the price hike), added bells and whistles (nice but just fluff) or will be some futuristic automated machine that actually transforms, by which point they'll be sold at banks with an accompanying loan.
Watching the opening flashbacks, I KNEW the epic roasting of the Matty Collector Voltron would show up sooner or later. Easily your finest work alongside the Wheeled Warriors Pitch sketch.
Thanks for this video Michael. While I could never afford the price tag, it's great seeing the big guy still getting love. It really does look like an amazing piece.
Blitzway came out with a cheaper Voltron version but with less accessories!
The Blitzway Voltron is an amazing piece of toy art and RetroBlasting's review video certainly does it justice.
*The missing ear cannons bother me.* When I was a kid, I wanted the Matchbox Voltron and ended up with the Panash(?) plastic one, and the ears didn't work. I guess I'm still one of the weird kids. Not that I would buy this anyway, far too expensive for my personal tastes.
The Black (dark) Voltron is coming out in June 2024. So I doubt this will be your last Voltron. 😂
Debating weather to get this one vs the upcoming 50th anniversary reissue of the Soul Chogokin Bandai version. Would love to get both but I can only afford one. Would really appreciate any input on which option to get would greatly help.
Great video Michael! Beautiful Voltron!
For $700 the Blitzway Voltron should have came with a charging cord for the eyes with internal rechargeable batteries. $700 and I have to buy and swap out pain in the butt tiny batteries? Eh
You hit it right on the head. The lions in flight mode hit the nostalgia button so hard I couldn't resist. That will be the permanent pose I leave them in as well. Blitzway went out of their way to bring a feature I didn't know I wanted, into one that I truly appreciate. Great stuff 👍🏿👍🏿
It's absolutely an amazing set. Still not enough for me to get. I have both Lion and Vehicle Soul of Chogokin sets, and I'm happy with those.
Excellent, but not perfect. This is not your last Voltron 😂
Fun fact the design of Go-Lion aka Lion Voltron inspired the design for Zyuranger’s Daizyujin also known as the original Megazord from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers or Dino Megazord as the designer of that Super Sentai robo/Power Rangers Megazord was a protégé for the man who designed Go-Lion/Lion Voltron.
Damn, this is the only Voltron set I would display with the separate lions because that display is dope. Is this worth more than double the price of the Tamashii Nation set though? Def no.
i would love a dairugger by blitzway
👋😧Whoooolly! Shiiiiiiiiit!👍😧
You are dead on about the prices of Japanese Voltron and robot figures. They have always been expensive even here in Japan where they are made. $700 is a major purchase. Congrats on your new Voltron figure. 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
What a great review absolutely outstanding.
Great review. That $700 price point...ouch. I personally went with the ThreeZero version.
It is not perfect but it is the best in the market today, nothing comes close.
I bought two of these things one for voltron mode and one to display on the flight stand. Gonna be working some overtime to cover these
That's gonna be a badass display though, congrats 👍
This is the best video I have seen regarding your thoughts on this Voltron. Not the typical review you get all over youtube. You brought in some history lesson on past Voltron which was interesting and also you touch on the right points I wanted hear. You ate the first Blitzway Voltron video that I watched without skipping sections, from start to finish I watched with interest.
Damn you! I shouldn't buy this. But you sold me. It'll be my first and last complete 5 lion/buildable Voltron purchase.
Nabbed it at retail too. Bigbadtoys!
That looks awesome! A thought on fixing the pilots. Instead of a heat gun, try very hot, but not quite boiling water. Once you can bend them into the right position, rinse in cold water to set the position. I've used this to fix lots of resin miniatures with bent weapons, etc.
The only thing about boiling water is sometimes water will weaken the paint to plastic bond and you can get paint chip or removal. (Those miniatures appear to have delicate paint on them) Heat gun in too hot for that size use a hair dryer. Hold it with some tongs. Not to discredit anything BrokenWolf668 said, as that is a great technique.
@@JeminiThaBard No offense taken, it's a valid point I didn't fully consider. I'm using it on stuff before I paint them, so it's not an issue in that case.
Very Awesome but For 700 something Dollars They could have took some Tips from Hasbro Star Wars Have Miniature Action Figures that Come with Tiny Posable Figures that have Articulation and They can sit in the Vehicles!! I'm just Saying Those Details should have come at that expensive Price Tags
Don't know if you are a fan of KO, but I recently purchased the MuscleBear KO of Blitzway. Approximately $200.
The color on the “contrails” should’ve carried over to the insides of the arms/brackets (or made them solid colors instead of clear plastic). Because unless you put a mirror behind it or display it facing away from you - you’ll never see the colors.
I would have loved if they could have made that feature light up.
@@davidmreyes77 that’s an even better idea!
I think the intent was, facing you, lions doing their typical flying pose. Facing away, flying to form voltron. You have two options at hand.
I want this SO BAD lol, and I normally wouldn’t spend 700$ on a voltron, but this one seriously has me wanting to save up n get it, mainly cause of the pilots lol, I’m sucker for realism, why I loved panosh as kid, not to mention this is first time any pilots have been even close to actual scale from cartoon, I would have preferred micro figs as kid to be more realistic to cartoon lol, I really love it, it’s obvious whoever made this loved voltron too
JUST GOT 2 of these in the last 2 weeks 1 from Big Bad Toy store and the other from Eknight Media. I will NEVER open these boxes NEVER!!
Lego Voltron is what got me back into Lego after not really getting anything new since I was a kid in the late 70's early 80's. I always wanted a Voltron toy growing up but it was either too expensive or hard to find because they were Japanese imports. It's one of my favourite sets still after collecting nearly 100 sets since. In retrospect it would have been cheaper to just buy a damn die-cast Voltron off E-Bay. 🤔
I had this on pre-order.. then the order was cancelled.. then the price was released (that is why all orders were cancelled).. I was like.. I am out.. $800 USD is not $800 AUD and it is just too expensive!!
