It makes absolutely ZERO sense how this product rollout was handled. Initially ship two cases of two of the same figure, that's 4 black lions on wave 1. Then ship one case of 4 different figures, that's red, blue, green and yellow, on wave 2. Thus you're left with 4 collectors at each location looking for the same single case of figures to complete their Voltron. Those who purchased the black lion in wave 1, basically locked in their purchase of the rest of the set, that's 4 other lions. Instead of understanding this and releasing wave 2 in a 1:1 ratio, that's one case of wave 2 (4 lions) per 1 black lion shipped.... They opted for a 4:1 ratio, one case of wave 2 (4 lions) per 1 black lion shipped. At the end of the day Playmates could have potentially shipped/sold 2 cases of wave 1 and 4 cases of wave 2 per store. Instead they chose to upset, potentially, 3 collectors per store. Just want to point out on the original 80's Beast King Golion toy, Yellow Lion had a unique hidden twin blasters on each ear that fires missles as well. I wished they would have kept that feature. Both ears opens to the sides to reveal them. Also, the Blue Lion had a hidden missle on it's forehead as well that pulls upward to reveal.

downside on this is that the side parts of the chest rotates with the "armpit" Connection - if...if there are any remedy...it would improve this version much - great review
Oh man, i had the original from the 80s. All metal! Sold it, of course. This was 20+ years ago. I was offered 2k, and i said sold. Had all the pieces, sword, everything!
I had the Panosh Place Voltron as a kid. I remember only knowing of the die cast version - my brother had the black lion from matchbox. When I was asked what I wanted for Christmas I asked for a Voltron that would fit the pilots in it. I didn't even know it existed. So getting the figures and a big honkin' set of Lion bot ships that could fit the figures AND form Voltron? Blew my mind. Still my favorite Voltron to this day. Not the most articulated, but nostalgia and all that. I have this Playmates version is a box set with all of the Lions as well as a vintage motorized LJN Voltron (they're small and combine), and both SOC Lion Voltron and Vehicle Voltron. Pretty sweet stuff. One day I'm going to have to pony up to get an original die cast. Got a few cool Power Rangers zords too, but Voltron was my jam as a kid (even before Transformers, GIJOE, and TMNT).
I had the OG Voltron up until a few years ago. Had to sell off some of my toy collection and always hated that this had to go. So these will fit well enough even not being vintage

I grew up playing with my dad's diecast version and now anything not diecast looks kinda cheap to me, but I like the size and articulation for the most part.
I had this set when it was first released. I couldn't get past the lack of paint and the weird arm articulation (no bicep swivel, and shoulders move in the wrong place). Sold it and bought the Bandai SOC version, and don't think I'll ever need another Voltron, even though the Blitzway is probably slightly better. Tip: the tails on the Red and Green Lions will push in further than that, particularly if you twist a bit while pushing them.
I have the whole set from the 80s still. Think a couple pieces may have some broken components, but that's due to my playing with them as a kid. Sadly, as a kid, I wasn't interested in collecting, so the boxes are all gone.
I got mine yesterday and I love it but like u said the stability is off and it really needs some heels or heel extensions. This guy is a Grail and well worth the price and the box it came in is sweet, mine is from Amazon and to use a size comparison it's taller than the ZAP ASTRO Megazord from Hasbros power rangers lightning collection

If they would have improved the combined shoulders, I would have gladly bought it again. Still nice for those that missed out before. The sound gimmick is extremely well done and a big selling point. The set is an interactive 'member berry with all the sound clips.
Ngl, while it's cool that Voltron's getting a 40th Anniversary? imo it would've been even more cool if they did this for Robotech too since both Voltron and Robotech are equally my faves dispite their differences :)
my ONLY gripe is the torso on the original 80s toy from back in the day you could rotate the arms at the shoulders without moving the parts of the torso they were attached too other than that it's an awesome toy if you don't want to pay the 100s of dollars some of the bigger and more detailed sets of this figure are out there

I’ve gotta Japanese Lionbot from ‘80 and an ‘84 Defender, and I just like the look of the die cast sooo so much better. This figure would be ideal for art reference however .
It had limited availability even in 2018. I only saw it at Toys R Us and Target back then, and Target didn't stock a lot. I'm amazed that it's happening this year.

as a kid who actually watched the original; i have to get these: it is a shame with the yellow lion; he was my fave and stood out as the tank of the team because he was the only one with a visible cannon on his back and the new series really ignored that feature and they did the same with this; really wish the back cannon launch projectiles i think the original did but its been so long and i got mine used form the good will as a kid

To push the lion arms' tails, i saw somewhere that you bring out the connector pegs first so you can further snug in the tails.

I member the metal ones. Between me and my cousin we had them all. Freaking loved them, especially when they were fully assembled.
My brother still has his from the 80s. It's beat up, but he still has the lions. He also has the Voltron Castle that's pretty much in new condition.

One day they’ll finally reissue the 80’s toys and I can finally complete my original voltron with keeping both my kidneys

I noticed they didn't fix the arm swivel. It always annoyed me how the 2018 84' Voltron had a wrist swivel but no upper arm swivel.

my ONLY gripe is the torso on the original 80s toy from back in the day you could rotate the arms at the shoulders without moving the parts of the torso they were attached too other than that it's an awesome toy if you don't want to pay the 100s of dollars some of the bigger and more detailed sets of this figure are out there

Only the black lion is available. What about the other 4? Looks like I missed out? Are they being released late?
The black lion the two grey connectors on the wings yellowed. The grey square on back of legs where it bends back yellowed. And the grey plastic above the its four paws where it also bends got yellowed.
I like this figure. The only part I don't like is how Voltron's shoulder rotates using the Black Lion's joint.
The only Voltron I had came with 3 3/4" pilots that fit in the lions, making it a beast!

If memory serves me correctly, the limbs were $14.99 and the Black Lion was $24.99 the first time around.
I’ve gotta Japanese Lionbot from ‘80 and an ‘84 Defender, and I just like the look of the die cast sooo so much better. This figure would be ideal for art reference however .

It had limited availability even in 2018. I only saw it at Toys R Us and Target back then, and Target didn't stock a lot.

If they would of retooled the shoulders of the Black Lion I would of gotten another one.

My main gripe is that voltron robot mode has no waist swivel or ab crunch.
as a kid who actually watched the original; i have to get these: it is a shame with the yellow lion; he was my fave and stood out as the tank of the team because he was the only one with a visible cannon on his back and the new series really ignored that feature and they did the same with this; really wish the back cannon launch projectiles i think the original did but its been so long and i got mine used form the good will as a kid
When the blue lion connects is that actually a recording of BJ Ward (Allura's original voice actress) or is that someone doing an impression of her?

I grew up with my dads voltron box sets, he has a really cool version that has mini individual pilots almost like a Gunpla master grade, it’s a shame this doesn’t have individual pilots

I didn’t get it back in 2017. Something about it was off. Plus my priorities was different too. Ah lol the tail I had a problem lol. Of course I had the 84 or 85 match box version.
When they do something for Vehicle Voltron I'll be interested.

I wasn't really familiar with the original series... Were fans just all like "The hell is a Shiro?" when the Netflix series came out? That COMPLETELY re-contextualizes Koran's "I'd never cut you from the series Shiro, you're our most popular character!"
