  • Step inside celebrated Australian architect John Wardle's family coastal retreat. As the founding architect and partner of Wardle Studio in Melbourne, John has created a unique home on the Victorian Surf Coast intended for generational use. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding ochre cliffs and rugged coastline, Burnt Earth House embodies a deep connection to place and cleverly chases the sunlight.
    In this exclusive film series presented in collaboration with Shade Factor, John guides us on a journey through the home, uncovering how his angular and precise design serves as a space to explore collaborations with artisans and craftspeople and embrace the unexpected. Discover how this home reflects John and his wife’s life journey and has become a place enriched with their collection of art and objects.

    John's family retreat beautifully reflects the soft serenity of its surf coast surroundings & the architectural angles & handcrafted materials perfectly mimic the cliff meeting the edge of the water. I love how the home frames each view whilst capturing the changing light throughout the day.

      Yes exactly, John designed the home to capture the magnificent views of the Great Southern Ocean and at the same time orienting the jagged shape to make the most of the natural light. Thank you, team estliving.com

      Correct. Further such considered design born out of the exact location using materials, a colour palette and angles to reflect this in the design. Stay tuned, we always enjoy your feedback, team estliving.com

    Burnt Earth House .... moody .... sums this up so succinctly. So unexpected by the sea but so appropriate given the history and for me it almost brings the desert interior to the coastal edge. Thank you so much for allowing us in to such a poetic home.

      @@est_living I did think that was the intent, and it probably had nostalgic value also, harking back to childhood memories. I personally didn't like it, that's all. Thanks for your reply.

      @Barrrt Місяць тому

      @@elephantintheroom5678 Agreed, the net felt overbearing as an element in the rest of the space. It takes up a lot of visual space because of the contrast and creates a visual density. Different color would help. I think he should paint the net in brown/terra cotta with some natural die created from local plants :)

    Australian architecture is phenomenal, est living, The Local Project, or Architectural Digest feature always deliver, however I can't get a sense of why my opinion of those interior CMU looking brick patterns bother me so much. Seems like a constant theme in Australian Architecture.
