  • Fantastic Four #88 and Thor #165. Note: When I mention The Mole Man hadn't appeared since issue #31, I forgot about his cameo in annual #3.

Thank you very much for your efforts on this one. These two issues represent everything that I love about the King's art. A story of a haunted house and the arrival of the future. Even though it would be on the declining side of the King's creative contributions to the series, the Mole Man's threat to the Surface world diminished for way too long. Then there was the Thor saga with Him that could very well be that moment in time when an impressionable Jim Starlin became inspired. Oh, before I go - as a fellow Canadian thank you so much for the Canadiana music kaleidoscope - Steppenwolf and Blood, Sweat and Tears - nice touch. (p.s. Mole Man also appeared in Avengers #12 - the same year as Annual 3 - 1965 - 4 years without MM!)

Thanks, Jay. Of course I wasn't counting Moley's appearances in other comics.

Just bought the King Sized Kirby book at my local comic shop. I need the Strength of Thor to lift it.🤔🤔🤔😆😆😆

That Thor book is certainly worth a few more bucks than that FF, but the value of Thor comics has taken a serious beating due to that last Thor movie.

For one, I prefer the classic scale of Thor's hammer. No doubt Jack and his blue-collar,NYC roots were inspired by a sledgehammer used by construction crews. I don't get the current version of the massive hammer and thin stick for a handle drawn today. What was the editorial or artistic reason for changing the look and dimensions of Mjolnir?

I remember buying F.F.88 and noticing that Kirby's signature style, from even ish #68, which was the first I had been able to buy on my soda bottle refund money, had almost begun to characature itself. Not in any bad way, just in proportion and thrust. Even more bulky muscles and at times the feet were akin to shovels. If you look at the issues of the F.F. in the end of the 40s and throughout the 50s, the characters are much softer looking. More subtle. Jack never stopped developing. That surrealist house interior is visually interesting but totally impractical. I always found 'Him' to be a rather boring character. In design and in personality. That full page headshot of Him at 3:32 is repleat with some serious crosshatching on Vince Coletta's part. If you were annoyed by his lighter feathery line work, that stuff was seriously overdone. But at least he was trying new things as well. And anytime Sif showed up, that was worth your 12¢ right there. Thanks for another Kirby excursion.

Nice observations again, Tony. I sometimes try to imagine the real world itself as Kirbyesque. All the men would have bulky muscles and the women would be Amazons and everyone would have impossibly thin ankles.

@ Fredflix - And Man! All those Awesome Kirbytech spaces and vehicles and equipment and guns and on and on and on into infinity. Someone with the skills needs to create a Virtual Reality space where all of that exists. " I'd buy THAT for a dollar! "
