  • While sitting at home during the Covid-19 shut down I thought I'd put together a video about a paddle around Phillip Island I did in a day. I value the experience of being out on the water and the challenge of longer days requiring a bit of planning, which is really a game in trying to fit in with the whims of Mother Nature aided by predictive weather tools like WillyWeather, PredictWinds, BOM and the wetted finger poking into the sky. There is so much to see and feel out there on the water both externally and internally. For me, being immersed in Earth's natural beauty is a wonderful gift and I find my self reflecting on the mysteries of life in ways that I otherwise wouldn't, being caught up in the daily busyness of my life elsewhere. Unfortunately, in this world burdened by thoughtless human greed and selfishness (just think of the panic buying recently), these places and the time to enjoy them without prohibitions are becoming seriously compromised.
Kayak: Mirage 582 handlaid kevlar (a little heavier than the IRT kayaks but stronger for expedition paddling due to the extra resin used)
GPS: Garmin 78scMap loaded with Australian marine charts
PLB: OceanSignal PLB1 registered with the AMSA (Australian Marine Safety Authority)
Marine radio: Icom IC37M handheld tuned to Ch16
Weather: Kestral 3500 waterproof pocket wind meter and weather station. Will give alarm with sudden barometric drops
Cameras: GoPro Hero 5 rear and DJI Osmo on front using RAM mounts.
Software: Final Cut Pro X (license payed for)
Music Credits: 'Imidiwan Winakalin' by Aman Iman from his album 'Water Is Life'
'Rushing' by Moby from his album 'Play'
A shout out for Moby who has made his music available to videographers. See mobygratis.com

Thanks Brendon. For me there is a special appeal being out on the water. I think it's because, while you may have an idea of what you're in for, Mother Nature always has little surprises for you. Stay safe, be well.

Thanks Greg. It was a great day and something I'll never forget. I've since been around the island twice more with the last time following whales and paddling the last 25kms in total darkness. Eerie to say the least!

Thanks Uncle Baggy (interesting moniker). I've been around Phillip Island twice more since this trip, with the last two trips involving a 2 hour paddle after sunset; the last being a surreal experience paddling over mirror flat water reflecting the stars above in a cloudless night sky . It was like flying through space!

gold absolute gold....paddling at night is super special...there is a spot off the SA coast where one night heading back from a klm or two out fishing we were met with slivers of green dayglo splashes from the paddles .....luminensence etc....incredible night paddling...kudos!

Thanks Brendan. A little bit of planning and awareness of tides and potential winds can mean the difference between a paddling delight and a paddling 'slog'. Especially in places like Westernport where high tidal changes can see flows of 6kph or more at their peak! What kayak did you settle on?

I have a Tasman 19 that I’m fixing up over the next few months, putting new rudder and pedal system on, making new fibre glass hatches. It’s old one but it a great looking kayak that I’m going to bring back to new. I grew up at Phillip island at surf beach estate so I know the island pretty well. Doing that trip around is very impressive.

@@nodnerbsAn Islander! (Phillip that is). My folks retired there over 30years ago and we holidayed there regularly from when I was born, so like yourself I got to know the island and its waters pretty well. But it's when you begin kayaking distances that you really get to know it. Good luck with bringing the Tasman back to seafaring condition. I hope it goes well. Be happy to go for a paddle with you sometime if you so desire.

I would love that, trying to learn from someone like you would be great. I have the bass strait in my bucket list so I want to learn as much as I can over the next few years. I have been in the ultra running world for the last decade and now looking for a new adventure and this fascinates me and scares the heck out of me all at the same time.

Thanks Tube rider. With extra time at home and a stock of videos just sitting on the hard drive...might as well make the most of the situation.
