Tony and I flew our Aeros Microlights down to cruise the ocean coast between San Remo and Kilcunda. The day was very calm with a high pressure inversion capping any rising air to about 2300'. Above this the air was much smoother but travelling south at 35kph. Okay for travelling south but no good on the homeward journey. The coastal run was magnificent! While sitting at home during the Covid-19 shut down I thought I'd put together a video about a paddle around Phillip Island I did in a day. I was generously given a ticket by Zoe and Pete to two laps in an actual V8 supercar at Sandown on the Friday before the Sandown 500. The driver was 17 yo rookie Alex Rullo, the youngest V8 supercar driver in the field and the track was soaked after a day of rain.This didn't stop him from keeping the 'pedal to the metal' and exploring the absolute limits of adhesion of the wet weather tyres. Hi Thomas. Thanks for your encouraging comment. The videos take me a surprising amount of time to put together (using Final Cut Pro), but I enjoy the time as it hones my editing skills and allows me to relive the flight again. The advantage of videoing a flight, for me, is that I can go back at any time to revisit it (evoking lots of memories), and also see things which I didn't pick up on 'in-flight'. High Rico11b. The right contraption is a remote control for the GoPro out on the strut in my case or for the helmet cam in Tony's case. Battery life in GoPro's is a big problem and I'm now taping a little 5000mAh power pack next to the GoPro just to get extra time. I have found the DJI Osmo cameras to be way better than the GoPro with battery life but the GoPro remote is better. Ya win some and ya lose some🙄. Cheers, Lance.

    • @7Lance1
      @7Lance1 6 місяців тому

      Hi Rico11b. We ordered the nose fairings through our Aeros agent here in Victoria, Australia. Yes, you can retract the wheels in-flight. I haven't tried but the difference in drag, I have been told, is negligible. It's also one less thing to do if you have to make a quick landing due to engine failure or the like. Having said that the Cosmos 300 is proving to be very reliable. Cheers, Lance

    Great Vid. Is that Oudie N?

    • @7Lance1
      @7Lance1 6 місяців тому

      Hi Elan S. The Oudie is a 5 XC. Tony and I chose these initially to keep an eye on each other in-flight which they do reasonably well. However with the increasing GA traffic in our area we chose to upgrade to an EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) in OzRunways installed on the iPad mounted on the kneeboards. This, along with the SkyEcho ADS-B, allows us to see other aircraft and their movements on OzRunways as well as them seeing us (most of the time!) This system helped me to avoid a potential mid-air with a Cessna as I could see that we were on intersecting tracks. I elected to do a 360 turn and straightened up to see the Cessna cruise past 300mts ahead, and only a little higher! I was impressed with the Aeros E-trike you are flying and would like your opinion on it if you have the time. Cheers. Lance

    • @elans2844
      @elans2844 6 місяців тому

      @@7Lance1Understood. The Aeros with Combat T wing is primarily for soaring hence why I am focused on Oudie or something like that. The wing is high apex wing with all the regular characteristics for the type. No major traffic thankfully. I understand Aeros has developed a new wing - the Nine. Which sounds great for flying. Batteries are great but only last an hour at best. Its expensive but really well made. Once you understand the battery management system it is very reliable.

    • @7Lance1
      @7Lance1 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for the response @@elans2844. We have flown the Combat T wing in some fairly rowdy air and it has inspired nothing but confidence despite being bounced around due to its light wing loading. Tony and I flew hang gliders for 30+ years and are used to thermic conditions but I think you're right, the instant start electric motor would be ideal for soaring. No dramas with fuel motors cooling off and having to be warmed up if turned off for a short time. When we do decide to utilise a thermal we find it is easier to just run the motor at low revs to keep the warmth in it ready for cruising between thermals. It does mean having to have engine noise all the time though. Either way these are great little machines and a joy to fly. Our Aeros agent has a Nine wing on order so that will be interesting to compare to the Combat T. Stay safe, fly high and above all be Happy. Lance

      @@nodnerbsAn Islander! (Phillip that is). My folks retired there over 30years ago and we holidayed there regularly from when I was born, so like yourself I got to know the island and its waters pretty well. But it's when you begin kayaking distances that you really get to know it. Good luck with bringing the Tasman back to seafaring condition. I hope it goes well. Be happy to go for a paddle with you sometime if you so desire.

      I would love that, trying to learn from someone like you would be great. I have the bass strait in my bucket list so I want to learn as much as I can over the next few years. I have been in the ultra running world for the last decade and now looking for a new adventure and this fascinates me and scares the heck out of me all at the same time.

    Very nice 👍 With that 300 on there, must climb like a rocket? Cheers

      Hi Patrick, thanks for the response. While it is still early days, the Cosmos 300 is proving to be very smooth, reliable and powerful. Yes it does climb very well if you 'give it the berries' but I prefer to ease revs after initial takeoff for a more relaxed climb rate.

    Also is there any chance you can do a video, detailing how you prepare for a long trip and what gear you take? 😉

      Hi Dana. I have a Mirage 582 kevlar sea kayak. This has been built specifically for expeditions and is extremely strong with a reinforced deck for the sail. You asked about the sail and how often I use it. For me it is a game changer! You can extend your paddling trips quite considerably using wind forecasts in pre-planning. And it is a lot of fun to blast along downwind using the power in the sail to catch waves for longer. Regards making a video of preparations for a longer trip, I am hoping to island hop from Victoria, Australia (not sure where you are?) across to Tasmania (about 330kms) and will post a video of pre-planning, and the actual trip (hopefully end of summer next year). The essentials I take for any trip are spare paddles mounted behind me, emergency strobe and OceanSignal PLB which you can see on the shoulder straps straps of the PFD, minimum 2 litres of water, bilge pump (I also have an electric pump as well), spare hat and sun-glasses, a marine band VHF radio and mobile phone in waterproof pouch. If you haven't already seen it, you can click on the big 'P' at the top of the comment section and that will take you to a video I made paddling around Phillip Island. Be well and above all Happy. Lance (alias Pep)

    Hey what kayak do you use? And is there much needed to attach the sail? Great video. Keep posting them

      Hi dana marias. I've only just noticed your comment (very slack on my behalf!). If it's still relevant, I have a hand laid kevlar composite Mirage 582. The deck has been reinforced to take the pressure of the sail. If you haven't already - get one! They're a blast!!

      Thanks for the comment Jason. The day was a wonderful mix of cruising south with the tide over windless glassy water to belting along with the tide again, this time with a steadily increasing wind at my back. You wouldn't be dead for quids! (that's showing my age :))
