He made it alll the way across the ocean and basically within sight of his goal a huge rogue wave caused him to capsize. He 100% had the skills and preparation, more so than most anyone else, but even the most skilled sea kayakers in the world would be majorly risking their lives trying what he did. Watched the full documentary. I suspect a rogue wave took him out 30km from Milford sound which apparently is common in the area. Freezing waters and a broken / sinking kayak eventually caused hypothermia and the inevitable drowning.
Reports keep saying it's a mystery on what happened to him. I hate to say it, he did say at one time himself in one of his videos that he woke at one point with great white sharks trailing him. It's like they were stalking him waiting for him to hit the water, so sad!!!
Hypothermia and then drowning, which then his body most likely sank and preyed on, the water in the Tasman is brutally cold. A good cold water wetsuit with booties and gloves would have been a good addition to his emergency supplies.
Sharks don't just stalk someone for that long of time. Yes they'll get curious but if he maybe tried to defend himself they might get scared and buggered off. I think he might have drowned.

wyatt m He was very poorly prepared. His “traditional kayak” was an improper choice of boat for this kind of expedition. You basically need a waterproof cabin for protection and recovery to do this properly as two other successful kayakers demonstrated.

Incredibly brave. 30 days at sea alone and it looked like he was genuinely going to make it. The footage from the kayak is incredible. What an amazing and inevitably tragic story.

Such a tragic story. Absolutely insane that he actually made it across the Tasman in a sea kayak, not custom built or nothing. Hitting a beaufort 10 storm just as you're coming into land is pretty horrendous luck, can't imagine what it was like rocking over 10m waves in a kayak! The kicker is, as he left, he secretly knew his fate. That's why he cried like that. He knew what he was doing, and he knew his chance of surviving was low. Shame he gave up his family for a little fame around kayaking.

I have done many solo and group kayak trips. The craziest ones I’ve done are Mississippi (Source to Sea - not solo), and the English Channel (solo but I had a boat trailing me since France does not legally allow human powered water craft to arrive on their shores - I had to get on the boat about 300 m from the French shore and we dragged the kayak) - I did both of these in my early-mid 20s. As I got older, in my late 30s, (I’m 40 now) my trips have gotten a bit more “recreational” and relaxed in nature. But I absolutely do not take the water lightly. When you do this sort of a thing, preparation is key. While I understand the “point of doing this” myself at a personal level, it is mandatory to have some respect for the body of water youre traversing. If it is a river, you wear a life vest even if the water is only 2 feet deep (a swift, highly directional river current can and will pull you under even in 2 feet!! If your leg gets trapped in rocks momentarily). If it is the ocean, you need to wear and secure a life vest at the very first moment when the water shows signs of getting rough. I wear a life vest at all times, trading in a bit of discomfort to pretty much assure myself a 100% that I don’t drown no matter what. I was on the Mississippi for 4 months, paddling slowly and letting the current do its thing ! I wore that life vest every day, all day, while I was in my kayak. Complacency sets in slowly after a few days, but I fought that thought and put the vest on. In cold salty water, a dry suit is recommended. From what I see here, the guy had a dream, but pursued it without basic prep work. He was crying about being scared, but at the same time not wearing a life vest. If you’re getting in large waterbodies and you have kids and a wife to go hime to, make sure you CAN go back home. Wear a life vest, and secure it well on your body. RIP brother. This was avoidable and it makes me upset.
i have a friend that he told me about a man tried to a cross the sea with kayak but he sadly he didn't make it and i was thinking on doing the same from Brisbane but after what i saw in this vid and how sad the family were, I will not but my family through this.

It is really amazing he made it as far as he did in that small kayak! He did it all in open water 1,000 miles ALONE without any stopping points to rest on land in between. That is like paddling from Michigan to the Atlantic Ocean without stopping. Incredibly he almost made it!

There was no false bravado. He WAS mentally prepared. He knew the risks because of his experience but even he realized later this was on his limit. But he never quit. Wish he had 24 hours earlier. If he wasn’t mentally prepared, he simply could not have endured what he did.

When I started to enjoy sea kayaking, one of the very first stories which crossed my path was the one of Andrew McAuley. It really impressed me. Would you advice not to sea kayak? That is what is on my mind sometimes when I am on large distance paddles and thinking of Andrew. There is been said all kind of things about Andrew´s expedition. Inspiring and a brave man, but in my opinion, this man is so irresponsible and damn near heartless for doing something like this with a family to come home to.
wyatt m He was very poorly prepared. His “traditional kayak” was an improper choice of boat for this kind of expedition. You basically need a waterproof cabin for protection and recovery to do this properly as two other successful kayakers demonstrated.

Such a tragic story. Absolutely insane that he actually made it across the Tasman in a sea kayak, not custom built or nothing. Hitting a beaufort 10 storm just as you're coming into land is pretty horrendous luck, can't imagine what it was like rocking over 10m waves in a kayak! I have done many solo and group kayak trips. The craziest ones I’ve done are Mississippi (Source to Sea - not solo), and the English Channel (solo but I had a boat trailing me since France does not legally allow human powered water craft to arrive on their shores - I had to get on the boat about 300 m from the French shore and we dragged the kayak) - I did both of these in my early-mid 20s. As I got older, in my late 30s, (I’m 40 now) my trips have gotten a bit more “recreational” and relaxed in nature. But I absolutely do not take the water lightly. When you do this sort of a thing, preparation is key. While I understand the “point of doing this” myself at a personal level, it is mandatory to have some respect for the body of water youre traversing. If it is a river, you wear a life vest even if the water is only 2 feet deep (a swift, highly directional river current can and will pull you under even in 2 feet!! If your leg gets trapped in rocks momentarily). If it is the ocean, you need to wear and secure a life vest at the very first moment when the water shows signs of getting rough. I wear a life vest at all times, trading in a bit of discomfort to pretty much assure myself a 100% that I don’t drown no matter what. I was on the Mississippi for 4 months, paddling slowly and letting the current do its thing ! I wore that life vest every day, all day, while I was in my kayak. Complacency sets in slowly after a few days, but I fought that thought and put the vest on. In cold salty water, a dry suit is recommended. From what I see here, the guy had a dream, but pursued it without basic prep work. He was crying about being scared, but at the same time not wearing a life vest. If you’re getting in large waterbodies and you have kids and a wife to go hime to, make sure you CAN go back home. Wear a life vest, and secure it well on your body. RIP brother. This was avoidable and it makes me upset.

There was no false bravado. He WAS mentally prepared. He knew the risks because of his experience but even he realized later this was on his limit. But he never quit. Wish he had 24 hours earlier. If he wasn’t mentally prepared, he simply could not have endured what he did.

He probably hoped to get money from publishing a book, lectures, documentaries on television, etc. He was hoping for his family that he loved so much and I think he had already made commitments in this regard. At the time of leaving I think he regretted the quest but now he could not stand back in front of the whole world. He did not want to go from cowardly and decided to risk even knowing that he was very likely not to come back alive. Respect for him and his family.

When I started to enjoy sea kayaking, one of the very first stories which crossed my path was the one of Andrew McAuley. It really impressed me. Would you advice not to sea kayak? That is what is on my mind sometimes when I am on large distance paddles and thinking of Andrew. There is been said all kind of things about Andrew´s expedition. I just feel admiring and sadness at the same time. Probaby he will always be in my head during future expeditions.
