  • In this episode we complete the M50 and have it ready to be dropped into the car. Unfortunately, due to a large ridge on the top of the cylinder bores oversized pistons would be required to use the 3L (m54b30) rotating assembly. So the decision was made to stick with the 2.5L rotating assembly. The piston rings were gapped and bearing clearances checked. However, a few snags were ran into with bearings and rod bolts. Once the rotating assembly was installed in the block the head was mated to the block using ARP headstuds, and the remaining cam buckets and cam shafts were installed. The motor uses a M5430 Intake cam and M50B25NV intake cam on the exhaust. This is a pain to time as none of the marks line up, I suggest using the 3D printed tool (linked below) as this made it much easier. From there the remaining parts were installed on the engine, including intake manifold, exhaust manifold, accessorises and wiring harness. The motor was now ready to be mated to the gearbox and installed back into the car.

      You should give it a crack, wasn’t that hard to do

    There’s a guide on pelican about the cams. Usually you can rotate the cam so only the front lobe is pushing down a valve. So you fully tighten that cap down and the rest of the cam just sits in place as there’s no force on it. Done it on an s50 tons of times. No danger of uneven pressure on the cam.

    Why did you check clearance with old bolts?? Isn't should be done with brand new??

    • @jpbuilds5
      @jpbuilds5  8 місяців тому +1

      Because the bolts are stretch bolts once they are used once they are weaker, we use the old bolts so we can measure the clearance without wasting a brand new set 😎

    So I am intrigued by this cam setup but I would like clarify what is being used. The intake cam from a non vanos m50 is being used as the exhaust cam, and a m54b30 intake cam is being used in intake side. Do any m54 vanos components need to be used? Are there any good tutorials on this conversation

      It’s pretty cool hey! No other m54 parts are needed. However you will need to machine the m54 cam vanos splines down so it’s shorted. You will also need to machine the m50NV cam gear mounting face down too. There should be some info online in forums and stuff!

      @jpbuilds5 so do you have a link for the cam blocks to set timing or if you printed them what would you charge to print a set for me and ship them to me in the States?

    Could you have got the bores machined so the ridge at the top would go away without overborig it?

    • @jpbuilds5
      @jpbuilds5  3 місяці тому +1

      I got them to take out as much as they could but it’s impossible to machine the ridge out fully without making the entire bore oversized

      Thanks! I'm using Hopwood rings for my naturally aspirated M50b30tu stroker build. Top ring is gapped about .016", and second ring right around .018". Slightly larger than I was hoping, but close enough I reckon.@@jpbuilds5

      Haven't dyno'd and changed a lot about the car so couldn't really tell, I'd estimate 5ish hp. Would be more on a 3L bottom end!
