I'm a Porsche guy, but this is my favourite modern GT3 car. Absolutely stunning! And keeping the old N/A engine is just a cherry on the top of the cake!
IIRC the BMW Z4 GT3 was allowed to use the M3's V8 because it came from a then-current model in their range, so if that's true then maybe the M159 was still in use on another Mercedes model the year the GT GT3 was homologated and that made it OK. Maybe that's also why the 'Evo2020' update kit isn't a full-on new homologation!
Its in the same manufacturer family. And its already homologated, why change what isnt broken, doesny make sense homologating the 4 liter engine. Thats why vanwall had to rehomologate their car because its a new engine from a different supplier
@@kevinwho. small blog v8 just gave the answer the M156/9 wasnt exclusive to the sls. Because it was in the same engine family is why they were allowed to use it Additionally look at the volvo 850 estate and the s40 btcc cars. The s40 never had a road goinf car with the 5 cylinder engine, but since the engine was already homologated and TWR werent using a new engine in the s40 the 5 cylinder could be used in the s40. Same thing applies here because amg already homologated the m156/9 engine and werent gonna invest in homologating the the 4.0tt the fia allowed the use of the m156/8 There is no rule that race cars have to use the road car engine
4:00 "making almost a mid engined but front engined car" I don't understand why people still have to police themselves on this. Most people when asked to list the defining characteristic of a "mid-engined" car will tell you that its the engine being within the vehicle's wheel base. So why do we think we are catching our selves on some technicality? the thing is literally a mid engined car!!!
Had the pleasure of driving one of these at Donington a few year backs on a test day. Really surprisingly how friendly they are given the amount of downforce. Engine sounds great inside…you feel it as much as hear it. Throttle is surprisingly long and linear, and low end torque is huge despite being NA.
I absolutely love this series of videos. Honestly top notch! Please consider doing a deeper dive in the future. Most of us will be relatively familiar with the cockpit and steering wheel, I think you can be brief here. What I'd really like to see, is more under the "skin" of the car. An indepth look at the suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, and aerodynamic devices. All the bits that make the GT3 so capable. Thank you for considering it. I look forward to 80s and 90s vintage race cars if you have them!!
Incredible video, it seems these have reached less than the other user guides but honestly, I love how involved this is and the nerdy details. You don’t get this anywhere else. Thanks guys
I think F1 teams are too paranoid and precious about their cars to risk being so open about how they are operated. GT3 cars are available for privateers to buy, so there is no point in being secretive.
@@joelambert7128 Yeah I understand the need for F1 teams to protect their IP. I was coming from the angle of the focus of the coverage towards the technical and away from driver features/interviews. Like i'd much rather listen to a mechanic talk about their role than listen to Lance Stroll being interviewed at home repeating the same boring rubbish "We're all working hard at the factory. We have to keep pushing. I'm working with my performance engineer to get the most out of myself BLAH BLAH BLAH."
I'm about to build a Tamiya model of one of these machines! This video has given me lots of reference footage for a mega detailed build thankyou for sharing this in depth look!
Absolutely phenomenal video. Thank you for showing regular people what it’s like in the Mercedes GT3! Really appreciated how in depth it was, and even the details like showing the flashing lights. Was also amazing to hear it all first hand from a driver. Would love to see the rest of the GT3 fleet if at all possible, would be so cool
What a beautiful video with excellent, clear communication.

Fantastic guide.. As you explained all the things, as a GT3 car fan it blowed my mind as you goes through the steps. And the real raw footage is also absolutely mindblowing, how harsch metal sounds are there as you touch kurbs. Thank you!
James. I attend 8 IMSA races each year as well as a couple of SRO and Historic events. I always have more questions than I seem to think about asking. You have provided a lot of answers and some additional questions a well to think about. Thanks.
Having attended most of the Brit GT races for the last few years this was really informative in giving more insight to the car, so thanks, much appreciated.
I loved the 3 part GT1 series, but as a big British GT fan this was my favourite episode yet! The drive from the pits in Donnington to Brands must have taken a while! What i really liked about the onboard was how aggressive you are on the curbs, must try harder on ACC! It would be good to hear your opinion on the new WEC and IMSA regulations and whether that has changed your racing plans.
Thank you. Very interesting. Love this class and Brands was my first track in the 60s. Always been a petrol head on 2 or 4 wheels. Rallying was my main competition in the 60/70s. I enjoy the sounds of these cars and admire how technology has become a huge part in the development. Drivers are still a main part of a winning team, probably more so than in F1 today. Thank you again.🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴
I have tested a Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo (very easy car to drive) but the AMG GT3 is my fav GT3 car. Great video. Sure does teach you that you need to be careful in that car when attacking the curbs not to go too far.
Hey James, fantastic video. This is without a doubt my favourite GT3 race car, so it's really awesome to see such an in-depth and well made guide on the car. One thing I was curious about was the brake bias knob. Is there any particular reason it has to be a knob, or is it some type of preference thing? Thanks for the video, looking forward to more race car guides!
Had the pleasure of seeing this car race at multiple British GT races this year and the sound is phenomenal it’s like a spitfire, will we see you back for the 2024 British GT season.
A tuned SLS AMG Black with a supercharger, headers, exhaust along with an AMG GT Black with upgraded turbos, full exhaust, intake, fuel system, and tune would be an absolute dream to own.
Many are surprised that these still had the mighty M159 6.2L engine from the Mercedes SLS in them. Amazing car, absolutely demonic sound, I can only suggest people watch some videos of these cars in action.
Great information. It’s amazing all these guys, struggling to buy Porsche GT3, thinking they have the real deal, when a real GT3 car it a totally different Animal, at least 80% different animal. FIA gt fantastic. Also says it all, DK running Mercedes, great stuff
Very cool seeing the all the little features and engineering challenges that go into making a good racecar, besides just aero, powertrain, suspension, etc. There’s a video where Kevin Estre shows inside the RSR (I think?) which is similarly neat.
What are the homologation numbers? How many road cars does the manufacturer have to build? And do ordinary Huracans and 911s count or only the special models like the GT3 and GT3RS?
Another awesome video James. What a fantastic machine 👌 Keep the videos coming - I always enjoy your detailed reviews of the fantastic cars you work on and drive. Merry Christmas to you and all at DK Engineering 👍
I needed this tutorial thanks so much! i was so confused on how to properly use my mercades amg gt3

best video of GT3 car I have ever seen, thank you so much for making it
Still have no idea how Mercedes managed to homologate the old engine and are still able to use it!!

Fantastic addition to the user's guide series, James' knowledge and delivery on point as always. Love it.

What type of motor oil do you guys use? I assume each car in the series has to use the same brand of oil. But is it a 5w50, or something like that?
Did you also find yourselves nervously hitting volume up as soon as start up process begun? 😁
can you do it with bmw gt4 m4.
