I don't get how people damage these things so much. I bet that if I took out my old original DS, it would still work with no problem despite it being in a drawer for years.
Yeah, and the fact that he'd scavenged the batteries. I sold a Nikon 5400 that I broke while deployed for the Gulf War. When I Got back, I sold it on eBay. It went for about three times what I expected to sell it for. I contacted the buyer to make sure he knew it was broken. He said yes and left me positive feedback.
Tbf sometimes when you buy a single item like a PSP out of a draw. I've brought 3 untested ones like that. And all 3 worked.. untested no charger etc. But when I seen 5 i was like hmmm lol
Is never a good idea to buy Non working from a seller than sells working and modded gameboys as a daily basis since he is obviously already took the good parts and trying to clear out some room on his shelfs of broken parts... CHECK ALL HIS SOLD LISTINGS to get an idea of what are you getting into
Cesar Melendrez right? Is just logic, if I was a modder I would do that, save the good working parts for me and sell the junk to others, but hey even that junk may work as parts.
I remember finding one of those in a bag next to a trash bin , didn't even needed charging it turned on first time and shell was in good condition ! These are tanks literally
I was literally in the same room at the exact moment that my buddy opened up his childhood ds phat and the hinge broke. The plastics these are made of must get brittle as they age or the design puts too much strain on the hinge area because I've seen far too many of these with broken hinges for it to be a coincidence.
Actually, the 3DS is worse, switching the upper screen or fixing a broken hinge on it is maybe one of the worst things to do. Fixing a broken hinge on an old NDS or GBA SP is way easier, because you can actually take the upper part apart, on the 3DS you have to cram the ribbon cables through the right hinge and hope they don't break while doing so. There are tons of broken 3DS (first gen, XL, N3DS) with broken hinges or just broken ribbon cables. If you find one on ebay that "doesn't turn on anymore" or "just gives out a klicking sound" it means the ribbon cable is broken 99% of the time. That said, I have an old NDS around here that maybe needs a new top part of the upper shell, because that one is really scratched (the silver paint has actually been rubbed off of it in some parts), but the hinges are fine. It used to have a dead pixel on the touch screen (which isn't scratched at all), but that seems to have fixed itself. I got it a few years back from an easter egg hunt done by some reseller on his website.
I just opened up my old school silver DS when I was home for Christmas. I always took care of it, never had any issues. I popped it open like I used to, and the hinge literally DISINTEGRATED. Snapped into multiple pieces. My stomach hurts just thinking about it.
You have to flash a v5 ds with flashme v7 and it gives it 4 brightness levels. ds lite is v5 also so when you flash a normal ds v5 with flashme it thinks its a ds lite.
Here goes. The DS has had a few different versions of firmware in it, this can be checked with the pictochat test. People that have v5 firmware in their DS (note not V5 flashme, v5 firmware) may have had a chip in it that was used in the lite. This chip being there means you can install a version of flashme and gain the variable brightness levels on a normal DS. Onto the flashme part. V7 flashme breakdown. First there was V7 original, this was not able to take advantage of the variable light levels of the DSlite. A beta release was err released which enabled this variable light levels to work on the lite. Lastly the beta version and the original version were bundled together with some detection code to get the current version of flashme, confusingly for some this was also called version 7. In conclusion: You will need to have a DS that has V5 firmware, no DS with a lower firmware version has the chip required. I do not know if all DS' with v5 firmware had this chip but it seems likely. You will need the very latest version of flashme (you can force the beta but I do not advise it) and when you try and run it the chip, if you have it, will be detected and the version that allows variable light levels will be installed. You now will have variable light levels.
To this day i still have this ds lying somewhere in my house and i cant find it for the last 8 years.. But that one also had a broken touch screen since everywhere i touched it would appear on like 2cm next to it.. And calibrate did not work
I immediately recognised the disney and friends music. It was my sisters game maybe 13 years ago and she loved it so much, we played it all the time. It’s one of the few of our original DS games that I still have.
The reason most of them don’t turn on, is because the DS system performs a system check before turning on, so if one of the screens is disconnected or smashed, it won’t turn on. People make Game Boy Macro systems by removing the top screen assembly and soldering a resistor to trick the system into rebooting. They then switch the GBA screen to the bottom and play GBA games.
I love the original ds. So much so that I have a near complete collection of all the colors that were available in Japan and the US. You could try out the quad speaker mod.
This is the style DS that i had all throughout my childhood! I had the grey, and it ended up breaking on the hinge just like some of these! But it took many drops for that to happen. Had many good times with it tho

Cliffymetal598 oof if it was cheap then 👏 👏 👏 great deal! But..... why don’t people just charge them if they don’t turn on ugh 😑 but great deal if it was cheap!
Well, at least you have replacement parts for next ds or mod projects. Either way I think the touchpad of this console is pretty cheap to get. Good video as usuall. Keep it up
I scored for of these off of eBay. They were 30 bucks. The seller was from Japan and he stated that they were all untested with no power cables or batteries. I ordered them a month ago. They all arrived today and to my surprise, they all work.
Honestly, You have enough of them and enough working ones where You could use the ones with broken hinges and broken touch screens and make Gameboy Macros out of them. It requires soldering 1 resistor and that's it. It would be rather worth it if you didn't feel like fixing them up
The way I got my first DS was one of my family members found it in the back of a taxi cab with a copy of Yoshi's Island. the driver said he could have it.
i need to get one of these to mod with a capture card some day edit: also not sure if you knew this, but when the charge light flashes for a second, but the battery isnt actually charged it means that the system thinks it has no battery inside, so it stops charging
My DS came from the factory with a broken touch screen, the right side of the screen works perfectly but as you move left it'll get increasingly more out of sync. Imagine mouse or controller acceleration but in touch screen form if you're drawing a straight line from right to left. Made for a very frustrating Christmas gift. What you have with that one DS is most likely factory error and you will never be able to correctly calibrate it.
I'm sorry you couldn't do much with them. Tell me you at least paid less than what a fully functional ds goes for. Anyway, I love your refurbish videos! Good commentary and editing! Regards from Argentina!
Just a tip for the future. The day systems tend to be finicky with the battery so if they are dead for a long time (a year or more) ya gotta leave em plugged in until they are charged. Also if they won't turn on and the charge light goes on and off open it up, remove the battery, clean the connectors with rubbing alcohol and put it back in. Then connect and disconnect the charger until the charge light stays on as it will jump the battery. Then after it turns on let it charge.
I did buy a few DSes like this and managed to make them all working by buying some parts like screens and digitizers on eBay. The cases are in terrible condition (Not broken but with very high discoloration and scratches) but I did not manage to find replacement cases at a decent price. For the blue one that has the flashing charge light it’s very likely it’s due to a blown fuse.
That's kind of the downside to these newer hand-held units. The tech behind them gets more and more sophisticated but the durability is no longer there. I still have my original gray GameBoy from when I was a kid and it still works. Even after being forgotten in a box in a shed for who knows how many years. Ya, it doesn't work 100%, but the screen works enough to show that it turns on and boots a game. But it has no sound. When I can eventually get a set of security bits that has the two tri-wing bits I'll take it apart and fiddle with it. I probably won't ever play it again, but I'm happy that I still have it and that it does work to some extent. :)
These are really rough! Everything has replacement parts, including outer shells, so you could probably get them all working again. But of course the cost adds up and it may be more than you're up to putting in them.
I refurbished my broken DSlite a few days ago and I have to say the internals are a lot more durable. It had a cracked hinge and shattered touchscreen. Spent maybe $15 total on a new screen and case. I accidentally broke the plastic ribbon cable clamp but because the design is so compact the case actually just holds the cable against the connector
The battery on the old ds's needs a while to charge before it actually has enough power to turn on again. If the charger light came on though, that means it works. It just may take a while before it can turn on.
I wish I could do this. would you do a tutorial on how to do something like this step by step, explaining how things work and what you shouldn't do, or would that be a too dangerous DIY for untrained people?
3:42 I swear I almost feel like I'm looking right at this one DS I had as a child, except it was a DS Lite that I accidentally dropped in pool which resulted in its touch screen not working anymore :')
I have a pink one and the two screens are not together anymore (yikes ) when I try to open it it (obviously) tries to open but then shuts down immediately. My mother says it will cost a lot to fix it so I have it in my room sitting there.
Don't throw away the touchscreen that doesn't work, those things can be used to make single screen DS's for use as a Gameboy Advance. just moving top screen gives it 10 hours of battery life, and if a game has cheat codes to swap the screens and you really only need one screen to play the game at a time you could play some DS games.
arent there some models of the phat with screens similar to the lite? I have a broken one my uncle gave me (top screen discolored, broken hinge) and the screens are nice and bright, and look just like the lite screens.
I repaired mi DS fat (conector, fuse f1 and battery), a DS lite (upper screen, botton screen, digitalizer, F1 fuse and P6 conector ) and a DSi XL (battery, Charge motherboard's pins on the motherboard, corrosion clean and looking for the motherboard problems...). The DS fat its the most strongest, easiest and cheapest DS console ever made. Nothing more to say. Greetings from spain!
I got a silver DS for my birthday 2012 and I loved it like a baby.until I accidentally dropped it in the water and I was devistated. It still turned on and what not but it didn't read the Cartridges.I got a New Nintendo 3DS XL. It was awesome and I could play with my cousins. But I would never forget my DS.
Get a ds lite if you don't want the hinge problem Actually scratch that I had a ds lite and the hinge broke for no reason lol and it caused dead pixels on my screen so my mum bought me a new one *2 years later when the 3ds came out*
Thank you for the video, I love these refurbs. I recently got a DS, and it seems to work fine, except every once in a while after turning it on it will ask me to re enter my nickname, and birthday, but the date is still saved. Any ideas what could be the issue? Thank you.

Don't forget if its a very late model original DS it can be flashed with the DS lite firmware for a brighter screen's . Google it .
Only if it's board is revision C/NTR-CPU-20. It is much more common to find in japanese models.

When you see "unable to test, sold as is" on eBay, you should always assume they tested them and they were all broken.
The reason most of them don’t turn on, is because the DS system performs a system check before turning on, so if one of the screens is disconnected or smashed, it won’t turn on. People make Game Boy Macro systems by removing the top screen assembly and soldering a resistor to trick the system into rebooting. They then switch the GBA screen to the bottom and play GBA games.

i was considering buying these exact same ones on eBay just a few days ago, glad i didn't; thanks to me, you guys get a video this week :D
I wish I could do this.
would you do a tutorial on how to do something like this step by step, explaining how things work and what you shouldn't do, or would that be a too dangerous DIY for untrained people?
he should do them with a warning before the video
3:42 I swear I almost feel like I'm looking right at this one DS I had as a child, except it was a DS Lite that I accidentally dropped in pool which resulted in its touch screen not working anymore :')
Anyone know the song at 9:03?
After a bit of searching; soundcloud.com/dominusbeatsofficial/pret
did u save it it was deleted on soundcloud pls
The original DS systems were known for having it break into two but a broken touch screen never happened before to me without touch screen abuse.
I have a pink one and the two screens are not together anymore (yikes ) when I try to open it it (obviously) tries to open but then shuts down immediately. My mother says it will cost a lot to fix it so I have it in my room sitting there.
it wouldve been so cool to end up with a half blue and half pink DS

- Clicked on it
- Subbed before it loaded
Ah thanks!
Don't throw away the touchscreen that doesn't work, those things can be used to make single screen DS's for use as a Gameboy Advance. just moving top screen gives it 10 hours of battery life, and if a game has cheat codes to swap the screens and you really only need one screen to play the game at a time you could play some DS games.
for the ones with broken touch screens, you should make gameboy macros
Did you try the in software calibration?
I got rid of my original DS in 2010.... Went through a lot. But these things did scratch easy
Looks like this was super cool in 2004
Didn't Mario kart come out in 2005 so it would've been impossible for you to get it Christmas 2004?
CalizpzZ0 exposed?
@@solstice_day4920 He obviously just remembered it wrong
Is it possible to adapt ds lite screens to a phat? Cause the phats have garbage quality screens.
arent there some models of the phat with screens similar to the lite?
I don’t know why but I have this really vivid memory of playing mario kart DS on my 3ds on my way to pick up my mum on a Wednesday
I think I'm gonna buy one of these badboys, I low-key love handhelds
Just be careful of the hinge, dude
Get a ds lite if you don't want the hinge problem
Actually scratch that I had a ds lite and the hinge broke for no reason lol and it caused dead pixels on my screen so my mum bought me a new one *2 years later when the 3ds came out*
Thank you for the video, I love these refurbs. I recently got a DS, and it seems to work fine, except every once in a while after turning it on it will ask me to re enter my nickname, and birthday, but the date is still saved. Any ideas what could be the issue? Thank you.
What would we have to do to get the busted ones? having trouble finding a lot like that, any tips on finding them would be very much appreciated.
Why not vinyl wrap the cracked one on the upper shell? If you do it right, no one will be the wiser and it will be a strong repair too.
