The screwdriver set in the link is actually wrong. I have the same set that you used today, they are the IFIXIT electronic screwdriver set, which is very worth the money, and incredibly helpful in my gameboy repairs. Just saying, you need to update it.
My older brother worked in GAME and was able to bring back my in store pre-order like a full week before its release. I took it into school and literally the entire playground stood around me and watched me play Mario 64. My claim to fame at the time
My first DS was a DSi and I was soooo confused as to why games were referring to the lanyard, or why the “DS” track in Mario Kart was looking like that weird thing. I also thought that people saying DS and not DSi were just shorting it out. One day a girl came to the playground with her DS lite and I didn’t know what that was, but it was similar to mine, so I, with only good intentions but the grace of a 5 y.o, told her it was fake, and she cried. I then understood that multiple DS existed and we became friends when we grew up a bit lol
I was a little too young for the original DS but both of my older brothers had them and actually broke each others' during a fight on vacation. They each took the other's DS and when the older brother threw the first DS on the CONCRETE floor, the second one followed quickly behind. Surprisingly the only damage was to the hinges, both consoles worked fine after and I think we still have at least one of them somewhere in the house. We just used duct tape over the broken hinge, it conveniently almost matched the color of the DS. And yes, we did have the lanyards on them :)
I feel old, you had that as a kid, I had it as a 20 something, pre-ordered with demo of metroid prime hunters, still got it, it still works and is in good shape.
lanyard :) I had a green one on my ds lite, mainly because I played that console religiously and knew I would never be able to get another one if I broke it.. still got that ds, still play it all the time
Not using the lanyard is a big reason there are so many damaged DS's now. I'm an "experienced" gamer, so I never had these as a kid, but I've always used wrist straps on portable consoles (and motion controllers!)
There's something uniquely enjoyable about repairing/cleaning your childhood gameboys. Finally cleaned the original gameboy my brother and I shared as kids and the gameboy color I've held onto for over 20 years.
The "every console has a story" bit made my day. It's great to hear some wholesome stuff and hear some of the reasons behind your passion. Great video Elliot. Thanks as always!
I love some backstories about old consoles, and especially about one I just refurbed. This one was an old yellowed DMG, and I took it apart to find lots of wear on the pads, dust, and finger prints on the outside. That made my day by just know that console was probably their favorite, and never slammed it, as it has not a single dent. I thought how much fun this kid had in the 90s, playing his gameboy with his friends, competing in Tetris rounds, secretly playing at night, I just love the thought.
I have a story behind my ds lite I originally had a white ds lite that was a hand me down from my brother I played it every day until one day when I was walking up to my dads house I dropped my ds lite and the hinge for the top screen came un attached and I had to hold the screen hinge down to keep the ds on and play without annoyance until I got a new ds lite that didn’t have working trigger buttons and then finally got a original fat ds with working triggers but there was still problems that I had to fix so I contacted a friend to come over and fix the touchscreen he came by with a new digitizer that he ordered from Amazon I played a UA-cam video that walked through the steps to make sure he knew what he was doing and make sure he didn’t destroy my ds and he did everything perfectly and saved my ds and now I have a fully working ds again but there is still one problem I need a stylus that can fit in the stylus hole of the fat ds
Hehehe, the same kind of break happened to my sisters DS. The way I fixed it....was I took a tiiiiiiny drill bit, drilled through what was left of the gray plastic loop from front to back, then I slid fishing line through the holes and looped it around the black plastic hinge and back through the holes before tying it off. Lasted for years until the fishing line wore through, but they aren't using the DS anymore anyway so I'm in to rush to 'fix' it again.
In 2007 i was given my first DS second hand, the same shell as the one in this video. Its now unfortunatly badly bashed with the top screen no longer working due to the hinges almost falling off, i over used that thing all until the age of the DSi. So good to see this modle given some love :)
I still remember my old DS Lite that I had growing up, and I played 2 games for countless hours a day and I was contented. The games were Bakugan Battle Brawlers and Kirby Mass Attack. My old childhood DS Lite broke 5 years ago, but now I have the new DS lite that I bought around 2 years ago.
Since I used to take my Ds everywhere I went I had the Lanyard on my metallic blue Ds for year until I gave it to one of my younger cousins... And he still has it on 😊
OMG I have that the same thing with my DS when I was a little girl it gave me good memories play Mario Kart with my brothers but I still have my DS for 2006 the good old days
I had to do this exact repair just 2 days ago - the DS had been on a stall baking in the sun for god-knows how many days before I bought it and all the plastic had turned brittle. Yikes!
My first wage packet bought my black DS Lite. Used to play Mario Kart, 42 All Time Classics and Bomberman regularly with my best friends and their siblings. The good ol' days. Found it during lockdown and discovered the left on the D-pad didn't work. Took it apart, bathed and scrubbed the buttons and pads, used contact cleaner on the motherboard for good measure. Bosh. Works perfectly. 😎
As an aspiring "refurbisher," I'd love to be able to see versions of these videos just completely unedited. I want to be able to follow along. I absolutely love this channel. Keep it up Elliot
I remember playing Mario cart for hours on my blue DS. I loved that thing. Sending messages to my brother with curse words in them and us giggling about it while our parents were none the wiser.
I wish the DS was before my time.... I would've loved to have grown up playing PS VITA'S and 3DS's lol. I grew up playing on a super Nintendo and Gameboy's. They are not how I remembered it its awful and no wonder I'm blind. I do still have a place in my heart for the super Nintendo though... Donkey Kong and Top Gear were amazing.
@@buildinasentry1046 yeah I enjoy the Super Nintendo it was a good system and had great games. I absolutely loved top gear the music the background ect it was a great game. my first ever console is a DS phat and i still have it, perfectly working 100% functional, no issues at all with it, some of the paint got off because i dropped it a few times but that is still completely functional, i started to play it again recently because i found the cable to charge it, its as old as me (17 years old) i also have the box, i will try my best to keep it as much as possible, my mom wanted to give it to my niece but i didn't let her
Lanyard :) Was absolutely incredible for playing 007, I cant remember if it was golden eye or another but used it to play multiplayer with my neighbour, those were some great times.
My first DS was an original red one that my mom gave me years ago she had picked up at yard sale somewhere for $5, I then got a silver one with the broken hinge from my cousin for parts so ended up taking the black bottom off of it an added it to my red shell which I thought looked better than the original red/silver combo. I got to get around to fixing it again since I like the original model a lot better than the smaller DSlite I have
last week I fixed my husband's NDS fat because it was really busted, and with the leftover pieces from a donor NDS I was able to build a gameboy macro, tried to do a good job and I'm quite happy with the results, now you're fixing the same NDS model
Funnily enough, the DS lanyard is the only thing left from my original DS (Had a cobalt blue one). Really wanted to get an original DS again, so I recently picked up a graphite one from J4U, and I christened it with my old lanyard :)
did this recently with one i picked up that had a totally destroyed hinge that hadnt caused damage to the ribbon yet, the new shells are a must, they used a better plastic so the whole shatter at a glance thing wont be a factor anymore, though getting the hinge together is absolute hell and i forgot to reroute the ribbon back under the foam backing on reassembly but it doesnt seem to affect the functionality, also its worth noting that the new shells have untapped screw posts so initial assembly is a pain
NDS lite is my most favorite handheld game console. The amount of great games library on it are absolutely monstrous! And I haven't even add in the GBA library yet.
Funny enough I had to do this last week to mine I only had mine 4 weeks before it broke for me I just bought a factory shell replacement it worked amazing looks like brand new and functions amazing
4:00 I use a sewing needle or clothes pin to prize up these little covers for my repairs. Lanyard! But not the original unless it's still in good condition.
I still remember when my parents bought me an original GameBoy when it came out in September of 1990 (UK) I had to wait till that Christmas to play it. I knew my parents bought it, waiting for three months to play it... that was painful. But what a Christmas it was, worth the long wait. They also bought me Super Mario Land. I was addicted to Tetris and Super Mario Land. The original GameBoy was my first system, Super Mario Land was the first game i ever finished. I replayed that game all the time. And two other GameBoy games i remember owning and replaying/completing were Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes (the game was based on the children's cartoon that was around at the time) and Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. Both i would replay nonstop.
The black ds lite was my first console ever. It was in 2011, i guess as i was 5. I still have it and love it❤️ New super Mario Bros, mario Kart ds, nintendogs,... was my childhood Ps: love and good night from Germany🇩🇪
Used Black DS Lite was also my first console around 2010, but I was 22 😂 Still in near mint condition, except plastic around buttons got smooth from years of use.
I remember this issue happened with one of my Mom's DS Lite's. I still enjoyed playing Animal Crossing: Wild World on their though. This was around 2009 when I was 2. Animal Crossing: Wild World was he first game I ever played!
Lanyard :) I actually used that, cause you could use the plastic piece as a stylus wrapped around your thumb, which for some games made life 10X better to play
I’ve had a ds lite and a dsi in black, the ds got rolled over by a van, yet somehow still turned on😂 sold my dsi a few years ago I am thinking about getting a XL sized one again
My first DS was a metallic pink DS Lite. I had wanted the DSi but I didn't get specific with my grandma so she got me the cheaper option at the time. I was thinking of turning it into a GBA but in the process I ended up ruining the ribbon cable and I don't have solder equipment (or the money to ship it off to some one that can fix it) so that might be on hold for now.
My first ds lite had thenhinge bust and that caused one of the speakers to go out with it. Unfortunately, i tried to open it up and probably damaged the bottom screen ribbon cable, making it short out whenever powered on. Though, i have my second one still at 100% and its the one with the red top, so im happy.
I grew up with a red DS Lite. I ended up selling it for a coral one and I miss it so much. To see yours just gives me hope that one day I’ll find mine.
You didn't talk to the villagers in animal crossing. I recently did that with my old gamecube game. The villagers went absolutely mental that I had not talked to them in 171 months.... (don't forget to put the correct time in the menu when trying to talk to them) I was mostly surprised that the battery for the rtc in the memory card is still working.
my first DS which was the same original fat DS actually had the screen ripped off due to a similar hinge breaking issue. very cool to see this repair and makes me very nostalgic for all the fun times I had playing with the big chunky thing
Charky Its funny because when this happened to my original DS it was around the time I had gotten a DS lite and then when it eventually happened to my DS lite I had gotten a DSi so I just used the bottom screen DS's as a backup GBA
Lanyard :) yes i had the blue metallic version of the ds when i was a kid and always had the lanyard on it. Played animal crossing and mario kart on it. Unfortunately the hinge broke off and the ribbon cable was damaged. the top screen is broken. R.I.P. blue fat ds :( p.s. your channel is relaxing to look at and i learned a lot from you. i am student electrician and mechanic.
@@ToxoRetro Thanks for the information. Unfortunatley i was 13 years old when it broke and i didn't had the knowledge i now have as an adult. It breaks my heart that i threw it away back then.
Accually, og ds don't work like that. The screen is fine, its what I call the connection cable. There is a separate board that only the OG model had were it connected everything in the top screen to the bottom. All you have to replace is the ribbon cable. If you had a DS lite, then yes, the screen was screwed.
@@airplane6417 Thank you. 😀 I admit I own a Lite as I missed out on the original, hence the lack of research into it. I'd be surprised if Zedlabz (or other similar companies) didn't stock it though.
@@ToxoRetro It saddens me to say, but og ds parts are probably the hardest parts to find, especially parts like that, I have found the ribbon cable once or twice before.
I’ve been watching those videos while quarantined and it’s such a relief while also being super entertaining the other channel is awesome keep em coming, also lanyard 😁.
Honestly I've restored my DS with an aftermarket shell on eBay and at least the one I got was pretty amazing actually. The plastic feels exactly like a genuine DS, the silver shines exactly the same, it comes with stickers and everything. The button holes were perfectly shaped, I didn't have to sand them down or anything. The replacement went well and the hinges feel just as satisfying in the new shell. Transferred my lanyard over too ;)
I still have my childhood Wii I got rid of a few games that I used to have like i had this Kung foo panda game when I was a kid but I still have all my other games from childhood like Wii fit and Wii sports
Wish I had such luck. About a year or two ago, I dropped a 2ds and the screen got obliterated. A year earlier, a former 2ds lost the ability to charge. Now I have to switch the batteries between the two to play a game.
I love how the guy in the spot "plays gameboy" without a module inside :D It's just a funny detail but it really made me laugh. Nice to see that you are sponsored now! Keep up the great work!

I remember someone in my kindergarten had the black one. I was jealous ngl
Used Black DS Lite was also my first console around 2010, but I was 22 😂 Still in near mint condition, except plastic around buttons got smooth from years of use.
hydreg Yeah Same but for me, he is holy, so i cleaned him up and now he‘s like a mirror😈😂
A fellow german viewer woohoo
SergeantGyros 😂
I used the lanyard with Project Rub which is the game I got with my DS. Thumb swiping was really handy on a lot of minigames
I always liked the design of the OG DS. Still have my old Phat DS and still play on it from time to time. 👍
Using plastic pry tools helps a lot if you're worried about keeping it mint and not scratching anything, awesome video
I used the lanyard for Mario 64 analog controls!
Have had my ds lite for like 10 years still play it to this day
Always nice to see an old chilhood console/handheld being repaired ❤
Elliot's instructions for removing the the rubber pads on the DS is basically the full description of circumcision, cut round and back and over.
I’ve had a ds lite and a dsi in black, the ds got rolled over by a van, yet somehow still turned on😂 sold my dsi a few years ago I am thinking about getting a XL sized one again
Cheers from Texas. I love your channel. I still have my 1989 gameboy that my brother and I had to share. Rough times. :D
I had to see at 0.25x speed to see your hidden message at 0:41, worth it.
Greetings from Peru btw Elliot, you also have fans in this part of the Globe. :D
@@serviciosdorianmenendez That's great, i'm watching from Argentina.
@@mercury3775 Brazil :)
I love the care you put into something that’s so special to you
Lol intro 😂 My first was Black Dual Screen Lite and I still have it in very good condition with working original battery 🙂
I remember getting my DS Lite and playing Pokemon and Nintendogs on it😊😍
I didn’t own one back then. But I did use iirc a landyard from the OG DS on my own 2DS then later on my phone to hang a keychain from it.
I’ve been considering reshelling my first ds, which I bought off eBay. Can’t wait for the second channel vid. :)
I legit gotta give you some cred, I have nightmares about routing that top screen ribbon cable through the hinge
GBA and psp was my first console and I still have them
lanyard :) I always liked to use lanyards on my consoles, I think it gives it a nice look
I recently bought one. I came with THE LANYARD. So happy with it.
I grew up with a red DS Lite. I ended up selling it for a coral one and I miss it so much. To see yours just gives me hope that one day I’ll find mine.
My first DS was also a red Lite, then we got a black one and still have it :)
My first DS was a blue DS lite. The first one I had, I think my dad broke it iirc
The replacement blue DS lite I had lived its whole life until the 3DS came out
You didn't talk to the villagers in animal crossing. I recently did that with my old gamecube game.
The villagers went absolutely mental that I had not talked to them in 171 months....
(don't forget to put the correct time in the menu when trying to talk to them)
I was mostly surprised that the battery for the rtc in the memory card is still working.
Lanyard :)
I only used it for Metroid and Mario 64
my first DS which was the same original fat DS actually had the screen ripped off due to a similar hinge breaking issue. very cool to see this repair and makes me very nostalgic for all the fun times I had playing with the big chunky thing
It was a really common issue. We had to send a few of these and a few of the lites off to Nintendo over the years.
R.I.P. blue fat ds :(
p.s. your channel is relaxing to look at and i learned a lot from you. i am student electrician and mechanic.
Not sure how different from the original it'll be, but companies such as Zedlabz stock replacement screens and hinges.
This makes me remember, when I got my DSi. I had a lot of fun playing New super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS and SM64DS, good old times
Transferred my lanyard over too ;)
The ‘Lanyard’ was a wrist strap so you don’t throw your ds away
The nostalgia! Literally the same model. Same game. Same year.
How cool, it makes me miss mine I use to have honestly I don't have ANY of my original consoles as a kid
I still have my childhood Wii I got rid of a few games that I used to have like i had this Kung foo panda game when I was a kid but I still have all my other games from childhood like Wii fit and Wii sports
I love Nintendo products, they're just made to last my ds still works and I dropped it a few times and left it out in a really hot car
Wish I had such luck. About a year or two ago, I dropped a 2ds and the screen got obliterated. A year earlier, a former 2ds lost the ability to charge. Now I have to switch the batteries between the two to play a game.
I used the lanyard as a touch option man, worked very good when you needed some thumb action
Lanyard :)
Just got a 3ds XL locally, it has a damaged shell and top screen, I should try and fix it 😄
I love how the guy in the spot "plays gameboy" without a module inside :D It's just a funny detail but it really made me laugh. Nice to see that you are sponsored now! Keep up the great work!
Also, is that the longboy?
cool, wish I could do this with my old PSone but I'm really afraid of screwing my console lol
Guy plays a game boy without a game inside for an audiobook ad, nice Elliott.
