Try out the reactor as well … it has that touch of extra stability over the hex and the hand feel is absolutely perfect. Feels like the hex but the slightly higher parting line just fits in the hand sooo good.
I use the Hex all the time. Unfortunately for you they have incredibly high quality control and I've never seen one with actual dome. I played a round a couple days ago after a little hiatus, and noticed I struggled with my understable discs, getting those trees out of the way. I think that's kinda the thing about the Hex is that it has that layer to its mechanics that you can utilize once you're used to it. Also it feels the best in hand.
@Snxpes if you have a straightish mid that's working well for you, then probably not. For example I still use a Mako3 I had before the Hex, it works great too.
totally! The new prism plasma for OTB had some dome, I don't think any eclipse or neutron ever have that I've seen which is unfortunate because it would make it such a better disc! Hoping the fission ones I have coming in have some but will be solid either way. Definitely still a great disc, but prob a little overhyped imho. Plastic is plastic.
@Snxpes If you lose a disc and wanna check something else out, maybe. It sounds like you're putting in work with that Buzz though. I wouldn't change if I were you, at least not without some serious consideration about what you hoped to change. It's too easy to FOMO on beautiful plastic.
Try the Mint Discs Mustang for that MD3 ish slot if you haven’t already! Super sweet disc, one of my favorites!! The Patrick Brown glow ones are money but a little flatter than stock ones. I prefer flatter mids but if you like the tiny bit of dome you may like the stock ones :)
My 3 mids are light fission hex for some turn, a glow reactor for straight to stable, and a Pyro for pure beef. Those three could handle any needs for a mid imho. I have a few other hexes and reactors that rotate depending on the day, but the molds are consistent.
I recently found a Mindbender and threw it a bit before I could get it back to the owner. I liked the way it flew so much I immediately went to buy my own, only to find that new examples were very expensive, so I picked up two C-line MD1s and then later found a reasonable priced Mindbender. At Denver altitude the Mindbender is noticeably less stable than the MD1s. I throw it for most shots out to about 260ft, both forehand and backhand. It's torque resistant but will turn just a little bit then fly dead straight and fade very little. The MD1s just fly straight out of my hand and fade a bit at the end. I also have a Glow Hex, and it's annoyingly overstable (seems to be the problem with all my glow discs, including Glow Envy, Glow Buzzz etc).
I have been liking one of my 2 lizottle hex's. One flies like a hex should, and the other is a baby firebird meathook. I got a fission reactor for the OS miod, but the 2 hex work for me. Additionally, it would be my preference if you could add a touch more saturation & contrast to your videos.
Do you have a cheat sheet or something you could post identifying the differing manufacturers’ plastics? How do you keep track of all the plastics and the overlaps between the manufacturers?
Had fun playing that course last year on a visit to the Denver area....great to see it again and to watch you throw those mids on it! Going to experiment and possibly make some bag changes of my own based on what I just saw here. Thanks brother!
I don't actually bag one myself, but have tried on bag swap rounds, but the Westside Discs Tournament Sling seems to be similar to these. I feel like Westside midranges don't get the love they deserve except for maybe the Warship, the Tursas and the Anvil (Sling, Bard, Pine seem like almost forgotten molds)
I've used a Hex for a year as a 2 year player and it was instant love. Got my second ace ever with it last week. I have no interest in trying an MD1. People are gonna have preferences and I doubt one is "better" than the other.
very helpful. loving the content, love the colabs.. im a fan boy of buzzz, but the hex is solid, what works well with the buzzz is the reactor and flippeiest of all the paradox(-4), uplink super flippy too.. great combo.. im struggling with mids at mo and just bagging 1 buzzz, loving the lander by launch as a 80-280 feet so not really needed any mids. love the mindbender in calm winds, i hear the new md1 c or s line is comparable to it.. do you think we put too much focus on mids only a 5 speed disc, when there are 13/14 speed slots, why the focus?? struggling with a reason to bag so many
If you are trying to find a slightly flippier hex, try the MVP open fission hex. I bag one of those and one neutron, the fission has reliable turn and the neutron has reliable fade. They compliment each other very well. No dome though
I use a pathfinder for this slot. I’ve found that it’s more consistent and I can throw it softer and it still holds the flight and doesn’t get more stable
Both my Mind Benders are super understable. I was hoping they'd at least match the Mako3 but now I only really use them for pushing turn over shots. Nice video mate, love these types of videos
I know some people with a lot of spin that throw those very straight. Never have seen one thrown properly turn like a super under stable disc. Just my two cents
You might try a Halo Star Roc3 for a stable midrange option. It's slightly more stable than stock Champion Roc3s that I've tried, but it slightly more grippy.
I love Discmania. I have an MD3, MD5, FD and FD1. But my Axiom Hex is my absolute favorite disc I own. Sounds dumb but I credit it with improving my game.
I had this dilemma for my first tournament round this year and chose the mindbender simply for hand feel. All three are decent though...its literally just what feels best in your hand Ps though: the mindbender was the right choice
Simon did an in the bag in like 2012 and said he used the SG Line MD1 for shots with a low flight and reliable finish. Doesn’t sound like our idea of an MD1 at all.
For straight to overstable, look at the Matrix or Pyro. Pyro is more stable but depending on arm speed, might work out better. The Matrix (glow) is a more stable hex
Loving the content! I highly recommend checking out the remix battleship for an overstable mid. I just recently got it and it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite discs. This video definitely makes me want to try a hex sometime for that straight-to-understandable slot although I have a stable meteor that flies very similarly. A Z meteor would make another interesting comparison that I would enjoy seeing.
Streamline Echo has been my go to hyzer flip to straight farthest flying mid. It's pretty close to the hex. Verdict for my os mid(still pretty new tho). Give them a try.
I'm having trouble figuring out when to throw midranges. For me, it's either full power 4 speeds or touch 7 speeds. I'm trying to work in a buzzz and a pathfinder, but so far not so good.
definitely get that. one thing that helps me when learning a new slot is if you think it's a shot you "SHOULD" throw the new trouble disc in, DONT, throw what you're most comfortable with, but throw a second shot as practice with the disc you "should" throw. That'll help build confidence and show you some different lines potentially
@Bodanza Disc Golf that is fantastic insight, and it makes sense! I know especially the glide and less skip aspect is valuable in mids versus fairways. Just have to put in the time!
Are Pathfinder and Buzzz similar in hand? I know that flight is similar. If those are close, maybe those just don't fit your hand naturally. If you get your hands on Compass, Trust, Truth, Reactor or maybe even Claymore although it might not be stable enough. Or just go to the field and throw again and again and again until it works. But there are players who don't throw much midranges. Putters and fairways and don't throw much fairways because have a stack of midranges. My opinion is that ideally player should have throwing putter, midranges, fairways and faster drivers if they have arm speed or skills to throw those. I have been playing for 20 years and I have never bagged a Buzzz on regular basis. I just never got comfortable with the feel. I can throw it, but there are better options for me that feels good right away and don't have to force to get comfortable. Bad thing is that you need friends with a lot of discs and have test discs or spend money to buy and try. Kaxe Z (unfortunately stopped making those) is faster and more stable than Buzzz but quite close and has a very different feel. Or Latitude's Warship. There are so many options that in my opinion it is good if you find a mold that feels good right away. That gives confidence as well. Or like both people replied, throw and throw until those that you have work.
@Kimmo Matikainen 100% agree! I do need to explore other molds. My problem is I throw my 4 speeds like the zone or envy 270-320. My fairways I can throw 340-375. Which doesn't leave much room for other discs currently. So there is a need for that slot in my bag, but I have to get used to the hand feel.
Furthest mid? There's the Warship, then there's everything else.... Honestly, I just temporarily replaced the Warship in my bag with the new OTB Hex as I don't need that extra distance of the Warship. But I can't wait for the 2023 Trilogy Challenge Orbit Warships to become available.
The dome of a disc doesn’t make it go further nor have more glide. It’s the wing of the disc. Think about an Aerobie - no dome but can glide for days and goes far.
To test this, take an old disc and cut the middle out of it and see how flies. My guess is it will drop out of the sky after a much shorter distance. The aerobie has a very different overall design.
It may be worth noting the difference in flight between the c line md1 and the most recent iron samurai. C line version is much more stable in comparison.
Should of compared the original MD and the new Md1 they are the comparable molds. The old MD1 is a roc esque 4502 instead of the old MD 4500. Interchange the 4 for a 5 and the old MD and new MD1 are the “same”
I am pretty sure he will throw Hex more in wooded courses. Hex doesn't suit his arm speed on open and windy courses. Players' bags change quite a lot depending on the course. But just purely based on flight path Proxy is closer to Mind Bender than Hex is. Hex has more fade at the end. I bought couple of Hexes when those came out, but never made my bag. Too much fade for the purpose I bought those and I have another mould in that slightly stable category so I gave those away. Proxy is little slower than Mind Bender but doesn't really matter with Simon's arm speed.
@@kimmomatikainen1843 You can definitely find hexes or beat one in to have that proxy/mindbender flight, I bag one of the first run skullboy ones that has that nice straight flight. But yeah Proxies are sooo good, you can put so much power on compared to other straight putters without it turning over. Simon throws his 450+ feet so hex definitely has less uses in his new bag.
proposal. don't think it's fair to establish a winner when putting is so heavily involved. why not incorporate a CTP component into these to even it out?
@@BodanzaDiscGolf one more thought.... Grace v. Flow? Been throwing a 173g opto flow for about 6 months now and it kicked the grace/wraith out of my bag
