  • Is a 650cc cruiser enough power for a beginner bike, is it too much power, or will you grow out of it? This is my first motorcycle, and I'll tell you what I think about that common question for starter bikes after riding on my Suzuki S40 Boulevard/ LS 650 Savage for 8 months.

    I've put 10K miles on my 2014 in slightly over a year. All cruising Kentucky country roads. It is a wonderful bike for that. Performance? Carb rejetting and a Jardine exhaust made a serious difference in my all around performance. More muscular and faster from entering 2nd gear up to 65. The bike is no slouch for a cruiser. Did a 200 mile day ride through Kentucky recently and it loved it.

    I consider myself an “early advanced” rider. I have been riding only 7 years (I am a 54 year old former trucker). I have put over 35,000 miles on various bikes over 7 years, even with my busy schedule. I have had a 49cc single scooter, still have a 125cc single Yamaha Zuma scooter, a VStar 650 Twin, a BMW 1150cc flat twin sport bike, and now I own an old Yamaha Venture Royale 1300cc V-4 Touring Bike (heavy). The older I get, the more I yearn for the light, the nimble, the simple, the easy. I tend to enjoy the little 125cc much more than the big 1300cc (although, if it has 2 wheels and a motor I like it). My hope and goal is to someday build a single cylinder bike collection: a Burgman 400, a Suzuki Boulevard 650, a Kawasaki KLR 650, a Yamaha XT250. I do love the storage of the big bikes but, nothing feels more free or more fun than a simple single.

    I really appreciate your opinion, and letting other riders know your background when sharing your opinion. So often in comments, riders share opinions but state them as facts, and we have to be mindful to respect others' comfortability when talking about what bike is best for what rider.

    Ride with people more like yourself. Group rides take you places you've never been before which is great and I enjoy it. Just ride with people who are in adventure mode rather than adrenaline mode.

    I'm glad you finally took up this topic :) It also seems that the S40 is perfectly suited to you as a person. The S40 is a calm bike, and it doesn't like to be hurried. Taking it your time is what that bike is all about. And from my impression of you the two of you are a perfect match :)

    Do you want to race or do you want to ride. That bike will cruise 2 up at any speed limit. It is much easier to handle than a 600 pound beast, and much easier to ride than any crotch rocket. Forget that it gets great milage, and never breaks down. It reminds me of my early 650 Yamaha, and Kaw, Z 1. You just rode, and rode, and rode, them. Let them sit out in the rain and snow, and just rode them some more. besides that, It is the only motorcycle made that actually looks like a motorcycle anymore.

    I took the MSF course in January of 2015 and ended up buying a 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan Classic LT. I rode it about 8 months and wanted something bigger and with more power for longer distance riding and because my wife enjoys riding with me so I now own a 2012 Harley Ultra Limited. Now my wife is thinking about learning to ride and after watching your videos I think an S40 would be perfect for her to start out on. Keep the videos coming.

    Totally teaches you how to ride a motorcycle! Hit the brakes, fishtail turn a corner man it is so primitive and fun. Ya know when you’re not going to stop in time and it just trusts your instinct and decisions. Wow! I don’t think we will be seeing a bike like this for much longer. But they will continue to be easily fixed and live on!
    All hail the Suzuki ls650

    I have a 2005 white 650 first and only bike . I love it, getting it road ready again I never had a complaint about my bike other than when I get it up to 55 or higher feels like you will get blown off of it. Maybe just me . I've been a off road rider ATVs and atcs and dirt bikes. But it is a nice motorcycle to ride.

    Also realize, the S40 is REALLY good at twisties and back roads.....you can easily Dust bigger faster cruisers....so don't sell a bike Just because it can't keep up in a straight line.....get on the some back roads and PUSH that sucker....cause you might be missing out on what the bike Really does well.

    Do not even be concerned about going 0-60 in l5 seconds or less, or in other words keeping right
    up there with the others in a group ride setting!! The S40 is a beautiful bike and 650 cc's is
    nothing to scoff at!! Let the other's get right out in front. Who is getting the great gas mileage
    and the cool ride the S40 offers! Just ride the S40 and be diggin it!! Look at the handling advantage
    and the ride it's great!!

    solid content I agree. I've been riding for a little over 3 months now and I've outgrown my savage although it is a great bike for cruising. like you said it all depends on what you want it for. after 60mph I feel like the bike begins to drag but otherwise for cruising it's an awesome bike, very reliable and fun. this is a perfect starter bike for those who want a beginner bike for cruising. keep up the solid videos 💪🏽

    I am six years too late for this to do you any good, I reckon, but let me offer this: I have been riding since I was nine. I am sixty-three now. I currently own seven bikes-- from a 250cc Chinese bike to a trio of Honda Valkyries. The most fun bike I own is a 600 VLX. The problem is _not_ the bike, and given that particular bike, it never really will be. The problem is group rides. I have never been on a pack ridge where I wasn't just miserable-- not once. My opinion? If they can run off and leave you, let them. It's much more pleasant after they're off your mind anyway.

    I just got my first......bike, a Honda Silverwing maxi-scooter. Now I know a lot will say “that’s a scooter, not a “bike”. Ok, fine, whatever. I know this after owning it for 2 days, I almost ALMOST, wish I had gotten something smaller! ??? I got the Silverwing for multiple reasons; no clutch! Big plus to me, as a beginner especially! Fuel injected, no carb to constantly wrench on! Lots of storage! For me, that’s a big deal. I needed something to run errands with and go to the store with or pick up dinner with, so that’s a big plus in my book! And the Silverwing is the FSC600. Which means it has a 600cc engine which I liked in case I need to take a trip on the highway to see my kids or my dad who all live nearby but still out of town. And it can easily reach highway speeds and maintain them....easily. It weighs just over 500lbs and has a top speed of over 100mph and is much longer than my sons Vstar 650, which for me, being brand new to motorcycles, is very intimidating! It kind of scares me! No, not kind of. It scares me! I just think after riding it multiple times now that I might have been better off getting a smaller bike? A 250? A 650 with a smaller frame like the boulevard? A smaller scooter? Idk? It just feels a little much right now. I’m sure I’ll get over it, but for right now the “fun” factor is more a “fear” factor until I’m comfortable on this bike.
    P.S. I wrecked it the first night I got it!!! Not bad, just scraped up one of the fairings on a curb before I got control again! But it could have been nasty real quick!

    This is an awesome bike. I have a 2011 gsxr 1000 and I also have a 2016 s40. I love riding it because of gas mileage and its super light. I got it because it was cheap at 5000 dllrs. It gives my 1000 a rest since im holding to trade it but Im keeping the s40. May pass it on to my gf later. She likes it.

    I have been riding for well over 50 yr and bikes from 50 CC to well over 1000 cc, owned about 20 bikes altogether fast and slow, but the ones I rid now put a smile on my face every time I take them out and have no problem keeping up while on group rides, I have a Suzuki S 40 650 cc and a Kawasaki versys X 300 cc the versys x with 33 liter hard side bags that come off so almost like having 3 bikes.They are 2 different bikes and love them bough, It is much more fun riding a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. Do not see the point of having a bike that well do 200 + KPM other than on a race track And when you can leave 90% of the cars behind at the lights what more do you need. Size is not every thing, it is also knowing how to ride and knowing your bike. When I had my 883 HD a young kid keep bragging about how much better his 1200 sportster was, when we got to the lights and he start revving his engine, and saying how he is going to show me how much better the 1200 was, the light changed and I left him well behind and when we got so some very tight turns left him even farther behind. When he got up with me he wanted to pull over, and asked me if I had the kit in it and would not beleave me that it was stock, the next time I went to the dealer they said he was in there asking what I had done to the 883, and they said it was stock, and he had a long way to go if he wanted to keep up with me, It is as much skill as power. Have fun riding what ever you have, and don't look down on any one they just might surprise you, even some of us old farts can still ride, pretty good,

    Doodle, I'm looking at an S40. I'm not a speed demon. Just wanted to say, I think it was rude of the other riders to "leave you in the dust." Group etiquette dictates that the slowest rider be in front. Taking off quickly, esp. from a light is a bad idea: any good rider will tell you that. Maybe you should find a new group to ride with. BTW, I wish I had started my riding journey at a young age. I didn't start riding until I was almost 60. I rode for only two summers before I had to sell my Virago 535. After 9 years, I'm wanting to get back out there. I'm now 70 and looking for a bike that suits me. I think the S40 might be it. Thank you.

    I wanted to respond to your motovlogs, I came across one of your videos by chance just the other day, I usually watch Cyclecruza, I don't know if you've heard of him, but he's over the top most of the time, he swears and gets angry a lot, but I think his heart is in the right place You are very informative and entertaining and also funny You seem to care about what you do and I appreciate that Just a few minutes ago I saw one of your videos where you got really upset at someone who you said was very disrespectful and perverted I don't blame you for being upset, guys like that make us other guys look really bad, so we get a bad rep just like some girls who do wrong, are gold diggers, high maintenance, etc...doesn't mean all girls and women are like that Well my point is I don't know why both men and women whatever their age and race seem to always bring sex into the picture I believe there's a place and time for everything and if someone's is watching a video on motorcyles, painting, gardening, whatever it may be, they should stick with that topic and not bring sex, violence or any other negative topic into the picture Before I go off too deep, let me just add that I think you're doing a great job, I am also a biker, I have a Suzuki Boulevard M109R, but am thinking about getting a 2nd bike, possibly the Suzuki S40, the BMW R9T racer or the Indian Scout, or possibly another one, I feel bad that this person did what he did, well I have to get going, my email if you want to respond is
    inthe2ilight@yahoo.com I thought about this title because I feel that life can feel like The Twilight Zone sometimes, my alias is Cool, bye for now, I usually don't send any comments but your situation upset me and I wanted to let you know I'm on your side and I'll always be respectful to everyone I know, I'm not perfect but I try to learn and improve from past mistakes so I can be a better human being, for now motorcycles are a great substitute to relationships

    I've been riding since 1962; started out on a Honda 90, so your starting with a 650 blows me away! I have raced Husqvarna and CZ 250 motocrossers that would, in the first three gears, blow away my current Sportster 1200. If the bike is enjoyable to you and you feel comfortable and safe on it, it has sufficient power. As you gain more experience, you may notice a creeping desire for more power, but with more power, one can usually expect more weight. No free lunch! There is no rush. Just enjoy your bike!

    I've had mine 6 years, 12k miles. I like it, and think it has plenty of power. People who speed on a bike are generally assholes. I'm starting to mod it this year. New pipes, new mirrors, and some powercoat. I painted it blue when I first got it, this time I'm thinking white.

    If your friends were taking off from a light and your 650 was left behind they must have been accelerating pretty hard. I just got a very nice 06 C50 Boulevard after 25 years without a bike and it's plenty for me. I don't get the fast takeoff from light types. But then I've always been a cruiser guy.

  • @blupupher

    Sounds like you were riding with a bunch of jerks.
    Group rides should be geared to the slowest/least experienced rider. If you feel your being pushed above your level of comfort, then don't keep up with them, it is only inviting problems.
    Plus, why are the other bikes doing 0-60 at every stoplight?
    I can ride my 1100 shadow (published 0-60 is ~6 seconds I think, never actually timed what mine does) with a variety of other bikes from smaller 300cc bikes, 1000cc sport bikes, 1800cc cruisers and never have an issue, because as a group we work together. The biggest issue we have is some highway stretches with speed limits of 75mph, the smaller bikes do make us keep our speed to around 70 or so, not the normal 80 (not a bad thing IMO).

    There is no such thing as a "beginner motorcycle". Someone may choose a Rebel 250 who has been riding for decades, someone may choose an S40 as a stand-alone motorcycle for all-purpose use. I have known beginner riders who have started out with Harley's. I have known people who have only been riding for a year who have more actual riding time than people who have been riding for 10 years. If the bike feels good sitting on it, and has enough power to do what you need it to do, then its a good bike for you no matter the size. People in Asia and Europe travel all over the country on 200cc motorcycles, power is not everything.

    You are only left behind for a few seconds - 65mph is the same 65mph, no matter if you are on a 350cc or a 1500cc.. What matters is the fun factor.. You should challenge those who left you behind to start at 30mph in their top gear (5th or 6th, no downshifting just full throttle), and see who gets to 60mph first.. I will almost guarantee you will win.. lol.. Or put a tow rope and see who can pull who backwards.. hahaha Your 650 has gobs of torque and low end pull.. It is more fun to ride a slow acceleration bike flat out than to ride a psycho revving bike slow..

    Seems you're too focused on 0 to 60. The "group ride" you mention sounds like a group RACE. Do riders really do that around town? Try to see who can go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds? The Boulevard S40, as you know is a cruiser. It's for cruising. And yet it has plenty of power for getting around town, passing cars, etc. If you want to race, get a sport bike. You probably already have one by now.

    Can ANYBODY tell me Please if the S40 has 'Soul'?
    Has it got that 'Thumper feel' being a single pot?
    I did take one for a test ride once and it was good/OK/fine, BUT, did not really grab me. To my Big surprise it was very smooth (no vibration) and had NO 'thump' in the single cylinder engine. (not that I noticed anyway)
    I did have a SR 500 about 40 yrs ago and it was G8! PLENTY of 'thump from the 1 cylinder engine. AWESOME memories.
    I assumed the S40 would have plenty of character and plenty of 'feel and thump'. (and vibration)
    Maybe I missed it. Did I miss it? I thought and feel the S40 did not have any 'Soul'.
    I am/was looking to purchase the S40, but now maybe I will go for the SR 400 Yami.
    Your comments will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
    Thank you so very much.

    I love thumpers. masters of the slow ride. back road country crusin. my first bike was a gsuzuki gn 450. the gn series were the predecessor of the boluvard series. Poor bike stuggled to make 65 mph but it was a master I f the slow ride.

      Doug I had a Ducati 250, 350, and 450. They were slow, back then, but you never need to change gears. They seemed to pull strong down to 0 RPM. I always wanted a BSA 441, or 500 Victor, but never got around to it.

    that speedo on fuel tank is so nice .... I'm looking for my first bike and i have Yamaha v star 250 , Honda rebel 300/500 or this s40 on my list and its a hard choice becaus I really like the yamaha v twin 2 cylinders. The way they look when you see the bike from the side ( suzuki is kinda ...meh ) but from the other hand that speedo on tank....... I'm in love with that ...i know v star 650 has that speedo on tank also but that bike is too big for me so idk what to get .

    The engine size can be deceiving. My bike is a 750cc moto guzzi v7 but it's only 40hp. Torque is decent though having a v-twin so acceleration isn't a problem.

    • @DoodleOnAMotorcycle
      @DoodleOnAMotorcycle  8 років тому

      +Joshua Kleiner oh maybe that's what I should've specified? Torque? At least the acceleration time...

    • @surrealchemist
      @surrealchemist 8 років тому +1

      Well the torque is related to the horsepower. The 0-60 would be a good indication of it. With different engine configurations and bike weights the weight/power ratio could change, so just going by engine size doesn't always indicate how fast it will go. Wow I also was searching to see what the dyno power curve looks like for your bike and saw this ryca motors page where they have some really awesome kits to transform the bike into a cafe racer or bobber. (Maybe not your style but they look cool)

    • @DoodleOnAMotorcycle
      @DoodleOnAMotorcycle  8 років тому

      +Joshua Kleiner yesssss I have seen those cafe racer converter kits so neat!! Yes that's a good point as a 650cc sport bike accelerates twice as fast as my bike...

    • @Boysenberr
      @Boysenberr 7 років тому

      A light-weight, high-flow muffler (with carb re-jetting?) can add significant top-end power plus decrease the bike's weight by perhaps 20-25 pounds. This is cheap additional acceleration and can be done by your local shop in about 40 minutes.

    hello, great vids! the wife and I are thinking about getting into riding. question, if the new Honda Rebels 300/500 were out when you were making your decision on what bike to start with, would you have gone with the Honda instead of the Suzi?

    • @DoodleOnAMotorcycle
      @DoodleOnAMotorcycle  7 років тому +1

      Excited for you two! No I would not. The S40 still has a slow acceleration time (0-60mph in 8 seconds, whereas a standard car on the highway, like a Chevy Cruze, does 0-60 in 11 seconds) is lightweight, and the throttle isn't too sensitive making it a great beginner bike. My S40 was low in power for a while on the highway, and it didn't become unbearable until about a year of riding when I was used to using it and not afraid anymore. The Honda Rebel 300/500 may have this happen faster.

    Hello there I just purchased the same bike a week ago and I am having problems find my friction zone consistently. Was that a big issue for you? And when u broke it in was shift to 1st hard? As a new rider I have a tone of questions. I only have male friends who ride and their advice is so basic I just stop asking.

    • @DoodleOnAMotorcycle
      @DoodleOnAMotorcycle  4 роки тому

      Hmm - when I first got my bike I would just sit on it and practice friction zone while it was parked until I actually even took it out to a parking lot 🤪 letting it run in 1st gear, clutch all the way, no brakes, and kept slowly letting the clutch in and out and playing with bringing the clutch back in before I stalled it... then I did this in the parking lots but added throttle when I would slowly release the clutch. Eventually got used to it 😁

This type of behavior is dangerous, juvenile and will get you thrown off a group ride and maybe get you expelled from the group! Get with some REAL riders not a bunch of hotshot that think they're riders!
