  • At this point I have been riding on my S40 Boulevard for 5.5 months now on about a weekly basis. This is my first bike, so please note this motovlog is a beginner's perspective on the Suzuki S40 Boulevard 650 cc.
My TOP Revzilla picks for gear and garage bit.ly/TopRevz...
**NOTE: I have since learned of a 5th "sticky" gear
    • FINDING 5th GEAR: Suzu...

    MY BIKE: 2005 Suzuki S40 Boulevard 650cc
    MY CAMERA: GoPro Hero 3+

    Why I LOVE this bike:
    1) Light enough for me to handle and pick up if dropped (c. 380 lbs)
    2) Comfortable, cruiser style
    3) Quick dodge from cars if necessary: 0-60 in 8 seconds vs. a standard car, like my Chevy Cruze, goes 0-60 in 9-11 seconds
    4) Easy to make tight turns once you learn the "friction zone" concept
    5) Low seat allows me to keep both feet flat on ground (I am 5'3")
    6) It's soooo prettyyyyy!!
    Things I dislike:
    1) Once you hit 55 mph the vibration is pretty intense, mostly on the seat, but as you continue riding also on feet and hands.
    2) You can feel the wind swaying you when it is very windy
    3) Very basic features (no fuel gauge)
    4) Horn sounds like Mickey Mouse
    RECOMMEND?
DEFINITELY. Particularly for new, riders, especially for short. An experienced rider may think it's too rough and basic in features.

So do you recomend me to get S40 blvd and ride it on the freeway? 65 or 70 miles per hour it is still ok? Or the vibration is too much?

I'm 56 years old and haven't road a bike in almost 30 years, but I got the bug again big time. I wanted something lite and easy to handle, I went with the Suzuki S40 Boulevard. I love this bike, it has amazing torque and is a dream cruiser in my opinion. I am 6' Tall 230lbs man and this bike is incredible. I know now why this bike has a cult following, it simply a great motorcycle. And don't let anyone tell you that the S40 is not capable of highway speeds, this bike handles 60 to 70 mph 2up no problem. Expect to pay around $5,749.00 new I got my 2016 showroom leftover for $2,900.00. Again I haven't rode a bike in many years, in fact I let my bike license lapse so I had to take the 2 day motorcycle safety course in NH and I can honestly say that it was both informative and fun. People who get the bug to ride again who have been away from ridding are in the number one camp for fatalities, our skills are old and the bikes are more powerful. But if you take the safety beginners course and follow it up with the advance course on your 2nd year back in the saddle you are not part of this fatality group. Get a helmet and some body armor, gloves and be safe and have a blast.

In 1977 I purchased my first motorcycle a 78 Honda hawk 400... Fantastic bike especially around town but I took it on the highway no trouble in fact my dad and I used to go riding from Connecticut up to New York State and all over on a day trip seven hour ride.. he had a Suzuki 500 2-stroke at the time no problem with either motorcycle getting where we needed to go on the highways no problem

Our first bikes are the same year model and color, and the vibrations weren't that bad to me until around 70 mph. Mine came with a windshield and saddle bags which were handy, especially when riding down country highways. Until I got bucked off of my S40 last year the only thing I had to remove was the windshield and I fixed everything else that was damaged, and now I got used to riding it with no windshield. The S40 is a great bike especially for in town. I've been riding mine for 5 years and I also have a boulevard C50 which I would recommend to you if you are thinking about an upgrade. Its light, smooth, also fuel injected, liquid cooled and shaft drive which means less maintenance. These are both great bikes and I would recommend them to anyone. I kept my S40 as my regular commuter bike and save my C50 for longer trips.

I just did a video on my wife's first bike and in it I mention how she was inspired by this video and how we ended up getting an S-40 for her to learn on. I left a link in the description to this video I hope you don't mind I am still new to this and still learning, and once again thanks for inspiring my wife to keep trying, this journey has really boosted her confidence.

I've been riding for 50 years, and I think I'll buy one this year. Not everyone needs 200 HP, or a 700 pound hog to wallow through traffic or mountain roads. It's the only thing I've seen in years that actually looks like a motorcycle.

Nice review. My daughter is about your size and looking for her 1st bike. I greatly appreciate your review on this bike. It is the one that I have suggested to her, if we can find a good used one that is reasonable priced.
As far as a 650cc being to big for a beginner, that BS, unless you are talking about the sport bikes. The S40 has about the same HP & torque as my first bike (305cc Honda Superhawk, 1966) and I put a lot of highway miles on it (40k+) before I went bigger.

Not counting a moped in Italy, my first bike, back in ‘88 when I lived in Las Vegas, was an ‘84 Honda CM450 with stock seat and milk crate on the back, carbed for altitude, chain drive. During the MSF course I couldn’t wrap my head around their description of counterstearing, then when I rode home and cleared my head by slolumming between the dashed lane markings I realized that’s what I was doing! The overdrive handlee the highway great, but the stock seat wore my butt out on rides to he Coast! Wow, Doodle, didn’t know you’d been doing this for 7 years!

The torque of this bike is awesome. Sure, its only a 650. But the pure basic simplicity of this bike SCREAMS of the days of what a real bike is...Low tech, and minimal in every way. I rode an '87 Savage brand new, pure basic as it should be.

Great review, Ms. Doodle! The more people giving an honest perspective of a product, the better-informed the rest of us are! I used to have a Suzuki Savage and I loved that bike. They're simple, just big enough to be a usable road-bike and light enough to be fun. I've been Jonesing for one ever since. I remember that adding a 140/90-15 rear tire messes a bit with the final gearing to raise your cruise speed a bit and more importantly, change when and how the vibes kicked in. Thanks for a great video. :)

It gained a 5 speed in the 90's so yours must have a 5 speed and hence all the high rev vibes you are feeling. Your videos were really enjoyable and I bought a 2015 S40 for it's low weight, low seat height and reliability. Age and injury have forced me to downsize to this from big twins. I ride gently and almost exclusively back roads but it is nice to know I can get on the highway when I have to. These bikes are so underrated and hence cheap to buy with only a few miles on them. They are like a living dinosaur, virtually unchanged throughout their production run. I quickly discovered the carburetor was set far too lean from the factory and turned it run properly without backfire. Perhaps you will pick up another someday.

February 2022 in VERY snowy Finland: I bought a low mileage 2003 Savage 650 a few weeks ago as a second bike, without even taking a test ride on it. I've been riding my Hayabusa for 12 years (I've had 5 Hondas before that), and being +50yo I wanted something slow and light to just do easy cruising on, probably the stereotypical midlife crisis thing (this IS my first custom, even after almost 30 years of riding). And I can probably take this apart and rebuild it without a masters in electromechanical engineering, which is exactly what I was looking for. I wish it was summer already, now I'm stuck watching reviews of what I bought. And yes, I've ridden a rent-a-bike Savage/Boulevard before, back in the late 90's in Greece/Crete, so it'll not be a complete surprise.

Long term; the best bike for anyone who doesn't do a lot of multi day rides. Best bike for anyone with short legs. Best bike for anyone who doesn't weigh more than 300 pounds. Best bike for dang near everyone. I've ridden everything from 200cc to 750cc bikes on a daily basis. I had a 400cc Honda Supersport for a first bike, rode someone else's 750cc Honda for a season, had my 200cc Honda for a few years, switched to a Suzuki 450cc and loved it, crashed it and bought another one and rode it to a standstill. I got my first Suzuki 650cc in 2007, rebuilt it in 2014 and someone drove a Ford F-350 in front of it a couple of months later. I used my insurance to buy a brand new Suzuki. It's just about to go in for it's 5.000k service. I was a bit shy after the accident, but am back to normal now. The Suzuki S40 is the best bike out there.

Oh girl, I just bought mine 2 weeks ago and I love it!! Mine is the white color as well :D I do agree with the wind thing, I think that the bike is just light enough that the wind can pose a problem in extreme wind. Good video no wind screen, one of the best things about riding is the feel of the wind on your chest, just use your gut mussels to hold you up not your arms. When you said 3 seconds I though I would have to take mine if for some maintenance be cause it takes me closer to 8 seconds. I have done over 400 km on the highway on my Kawasaki 750 only stopping for gas and no problem, I was on the 400 and 401 so was doing 100 kph. I have had much bigger bikes 850 and 1000 cc but do not see the point in them. If a bike will to a tun what more do you need. And I can have 2 bikes for the price of one. A S 40 and a versys 300 X bough great bikes

Last thing: Do some research on kidney belts. I don't know when they are essential, but if your bike vibrates a lot, it may be a life saver. A back protector is crucial, too. Don't know if you've already gotten yourself one? Oh, and that is perhaps a topic for a future video: Safety gear - what you have and what you still need to get.

    • @DoodleOnAMotorcycle
      @DoodleOnAMotorcycle  8 років тому

Thanks, Jonaswang- yes I have a back protector! Gear would definitely be a good future video. Yea I may be looking into kidney belts... but I tend to avoid higher speeds anyways partially because of my fear of the speed and partially because of how much it vibrates. Thank you!! :D

Look, ride a bike that you enjoy, don't mind what anyone else thinks. I've had over a dozen bikes, most of them very fast, my last bike was a Yamaha R6, I was done with stupidly fast, I wanted, and missed the fun, forgivable, reliable, and raw experience of cycling again...the kind we had with the Standards in the late 80's. I tried a lot of used bikes, and nothing gave me the thrill, and fun that this big thumper did! No, it's not a great long mile bike lol, but it does cruise for forever at 70-80, yes you need a screen if you're going to be going highway speeds, or at least a full face helmet. Loads of torque, it's very weird, because there's not much power, but it feels like there's more than enough. It's super flickable for a cruiser, which are typically sluggish, but this things weight is so low, you can corner with any novice on any sport bike....where they lose you is top end, anything past 85mph is very uncomfortable, but the only time I worry about that, is when I do the hour ride to the beach weekly. This bike hangs with anything light to light, and has a cool factor that's hard to nail down, it's just oddly satisfying doing everything with it, and super difficult to get into trouble, the back end kicks out and you reel it back in just by thinking about it lol. It's the Mazda Miata of bikes imo :) It's not a beginner's bike, it's for anyone that wants something a little different and a LOT of fun! Oh, and let's not even get int VALUE! For the money I DARE you to do better! try it, doesn't happen, This bike is so simple, even someone that's never handled tools before could, with access to the internet, and some simple supplies can replace most things on it, and even adjust the valves. There are standard fixes that everyone should apply to the bikes right when they get them, easy enough to perform, and look up(DO IT!) Let me explain one more thing to the people that don't think 90mph is fast enough, this is a cruiser, that's lighter than most 600cc superbikes oO It gets very scary the closer you get to 100, they are not made for speed, they're for roll on's, light to light fun, looking great, and sounding better. Yes they corner tho, few people can keep up with me thru the twisties(obviously a seasoned light crotch rocket..like me on my R6^^... would make me cry, but those are rare, most just wear the gear, and copy what they see on TV, which generally means a crash is inevitable....ok this post was way too long, so The S40/Savage/Thumper/LS650/whatever...it's for fun! If you want more, spend double and get it, but if you want the most fun you can have on 2 wheels(that a real bike, not a Grom, or a scooter, a real ass legend of a thumper!) for under $3k, this is you ticket to freedom, and adventure, and that's *ALL THAT COUNTS!*, beginner, or pro, everyone loves it after about a 2 minutes on it.

Most of these people talking about CC's don't understand the difference between engine types, s40 is a thumper a single cyclinder engine which can have a lot of low end torque but not high end speeds. Kinda like a v-twin a lot of torque yet no high end speeds, look at a yamaha bolt 949cc and its high end speed is around 110 give or take. The new rebel 500 471cc, is a parallel-twin and can get to 105 give or take. I've been told my multiple people that the rebel would be to small and something like the yamaha bolt or harley iron 883 would be more fitting. LOL they just don't know but refuse to take knowledge when you tell them.

For what it's worth, I believe that your bike should have 5 gears, not only four. The older Savage version had four, and when Suzuki changed the name to Boulevard s 40, I believe that's when they also gave it a 5th gear. I just bought a 2017 in black, and it has 5 gears. I love it.
I rode a Yamaha Virago 250 for 8 years, and still have that bike with its 75 miles to the gallon. Don't plan on selling the Virago any time soon, but I am also really enjoying the s 40. It is much faster. So I figure, for now, I'll use the Virago for shorter trips and when I am on Idaho gravel roads because it is chain driven, and the s40 for longer road rides where I need to go faster to keep to the speed limit.
    Enjoy.

Aaaah, the Suzuki LS650P Savage - this was my first "real" bike, after a couple of made-in-China engineering and manufacturing atrocities. I don't ride it anymore (it hasn't been in a working condition for some 10 years), but I still keep it 🙂
BTW it can do 80mph and even more, but it starts being quite uncomfortable trying to do so before hitting 70mph.

My name is Ivan Mercado, I live in Brenham, TX. I just passed my motorcycle class and got my certificate, this pass Labor day weekend. I'm 5'4" 160ish lbs. I too am looking for a small cruiser type bike. Yours looks like a perfect one for my stature, plus they're cheap $$$$. Right now my wife's cousin's husband is letting me learn on his 1970 Honda Trail 90, that's a fun bike, got it up to 50 mph. So I'm looking around, saving up and this bike seems to come up a lot. So hopefully I'll get one. Thanks for the feedback on your bike. Enjoy.!

the 600cc mark is for sports bikes. For cruisers and tourings it's the beginner level. But you're correct: it depends on how the person is too: my first bike is a 600cc sport bike, and I also have a 600cc Honda Shadow, which is also my first cruiser (ever ridden). Don't like it much, so I'm looking into touring or sitting upright with feet right under my body instead of hanging in front. Still love my fazer though.

Hey lady, nice video! I truly enjoyed it. I’m a girl as well and trying to decide what’s best for my first bike so watching some “reviews”. This is 2 years old but a good video. I think I might just go with a Honda Rebel 500 just because it’s fuel injected. I’ve read and heard bad things about air-cooled engines (carburetors), so I won’t be taking any chances there. Hope your bike is treating you well though❤️

Hey doodle. Great first vid. Have a question though. Not trying to be a jerk, but about your acceleration to 60. Are you sure that bike can do it in 3 seconds? That's extremely fast. My gsxr 1000 super sport barely beats that! The m50 Boulevard takes 5.4 seconds, and my boulevard 109r could only do it in just under 4, so I'm pretty sure somebody lied to you. Doubt it matters to ya, but for people looking for a first bike it might. Anyway congrats on the bike. It's nice! Looking forward to seeing all your vids!

+Denis Rousseau I don't know why but it's not letting me like or respond to your comment. What I was trying to say was: My mileage is at 9.4K ( I put about 1K on it myself, thank you :D) That's good to know! But my bike has a belt, do I still have this "chain tensioner" on my bike? Oh gosh thank you for your help

    • @denisrousseau9071
      @denisrousseau9071 8 років тому +3

      Hello Doodle
I know your bike is belt driven but the cam chain tensioner is inside the engine , this chain can be seen only by opening the engine casing, this chain is driving intake and exhaust valves on the engine head.
It can be pricy to change if ignored it can ruin the engine. Be careful so if you keep the motorcycle at 16 k-20k miles you should made it inspected by a qualfied mechanic!
Have fun with your bike , you are so sweet !

Versys x for long trips and shopping ( have 33 liter hard bags on it ) and the S 40 for sort rides of around 100 Km. Right off the bat, the S40 does not do 0-60 in 3 seconds. The tech specs is a 1/4 mile in 15.5 to over 16 seconds. top speed of 88mph. This is a slow bike. But fast enough for city driving. Vibration is bad enough over 60mph. A good beginner bike. Cheap too. I bought a 2007 w/7k for 2000$ four years ago. And have changed all the light bulbs. (vibrations) speedo cable, the clutch linkage broke, but after 4 years and 13k miles it's been a good bike, not great but good. My last 3 street bikes were GREAT bikes. This is a cheap easy to ride easy to fix beginner bike. But 0-60 in three seconds, lmao not in a tornado.

I'm going to try running it down the road fro a while and see if whatever loosens up. Failing that, I'll fill the case with Magic Elixir (acetone and transmission fluid half and half) and let it sit for a day and then drain and fill with oil and see if she'll shift properly. Don't wanna take it apart if I can help it/ We're in Hall County if you ever get over this way.

Well, they used to have only 4 gears, but yours should be new enough to have 5. But you should know better than me (or be able to find out easily). Also, I think the 3 seconds 0-60 MPH guess is on the optimistic side :) It should be in the 7-8-9 seconds range :) Maybe that's a small fun thing to try on your next video? There should be 0-60 apps out there :D I owe you a beer if you get it below 5 seconds! ;D
