Looks dangerous. Can you imagine knocking that thing over with all that molten solder? Reminds of the Game of Thrones and that melted silver helmet from the Dothraki.
Great directions and the tinning solder bowl is brilliant. I am planning to use these connectors for my Lithium packs for my go cart and others. I was thinking since you cover the leads when doing the one side, you could possibly cover the other completed side still with tape when dealing with a live high current battery situation. Thanks for showing these steps
Great video, as usual...and informative. Interesting, in an "interesting" way, that this video went live just as I was finishing up soldering the connectors on the Mamba X going into my Axial Capra.
I appreciate the tutorial. Im still failing half the time. Either i overheat the connector or cant get solder to flow on both the wire and connector at the same time.
Great info But I must say you have to be lucky that you have a nice powerful soldering Iron I only say this because you should try tip tinner and keeping your tip clean. I had the same issue all the time! black tips smoke coming off them! I just have learned how important it is for heat transfer to keep that tip shiny! I have not used a gun style in quite a few years but have been using the pen style. I want to get one of those so I do not need to struggle though
Myself coming from using pencil and gun style soldering irons I can 100% tell you that investing in a decent soldering station is well worth the increased ease of use and manuverability for soldering in tight spaces like we constantly find in RC! Nice vid mate, I'm thinking if switching to XT90 from EC5.
I new to doing this but if it's kinda like guitar stuff I do, don't wiggle the wire if if it's a bit warm to touch. Think I'll give it 5 minutes to cool before wiggling any wire. Got a few I want xt60, got one I want xt90, only cause it'll be 2 batteries and needs a 2 battery feeder.
@DriftomaniacsRC Where did you buy the metal ingot solder bars to melt in that pot ? And do i mix it with anything else ? Do i need flux paste ? Where does one get them on Amazon ?
Hello. I’m wondering if you can put XT90 connectors on Traxxas Batterys? I really want to know because I want to get the Max 8 and maybe a new battery.
hay i have ruined so many of these damm things and will go with this vid and give it a final push...the soldering iron is key but technigue is up there cheers
Right on this is a great video. I am so new to this I have only soldered 2 sets of leads Deans and now EC5 which I think is far superior and helps temps stays cool What solder are U using is it core flux filled This connector looks good will it work good for 4 and 6 s lipo batteries or does one want EC5 connector’s for that much voltage. That is a good question what size batteries need what particular plugs Deans Xt90 EC5 Traxxas style plug uno 2 cell up to 6 cell I think I may have a idea but definitely need to learn this stuff . 👊😀
I would like to see EC5 connectors soldered as well please because I personally think they are a better connector. The XT-90's are a great connector, but they loosen up quickly and the EC5's seem to stay tight
So I was watching this video because I'm going to try and solder ec5 connectors and the pack I purchased are prebuilt. I was wondering if there's a way to solder them without melting the plastic casing. Why do they sell them prebuilt if they melt easily?😔 This will be my first attempt at soldering so I'm a little nervous.😟
Hi watch the other video I've shot on how to solder EC5 Connectors. They are NOT made of hi temp plastic like the XT90's. If you try and solder EC5 connectors with the pins in place they will melt the plastic. You can do it with XT90's as shown in this video but DO NOT try and do it with the EC5's - I responded as fast as I could on this one as don't want to see you make a mistake. With EC5's you have to solder the pin then push it back into the connector.
Well I tried removing the preinstalled bullets and there is no way they are cming back out. They do have that extra long opening on the soldering side like the xt90s but I'll have no choice but to tray and tim them or throw all 20 connectors in the trash.😩
Do yiu have correct name for this machine i have called up companys to see if tgey have any and no go I have looked it up on wish and eBay but no luck under tining machine
Ahhh man... I'm going to replace my Dean plugs with xt90's on my batteries and I'm soooo nervous about soldering these wires when they are so close together.... Wish me luck...
all my lipos are xt90/xt60. I do find the ec5 and ec3 connectors are easy to solder. On the ec style you can heat it up stick wire in and done. I want to switch over but thats a lot of lipos lol.
YES newbie here lucked out and got my EC5 connector on my battery leads. I need help with this. The plug I had a bitch putting the pin back in after it was soldered. Make sense pushing it In was hard Wanna we’ll hope to see a better way of doing the job. 👊😀thanks for reading my comment
I give up with soldering. I have tried over and over and the results are terrible. I bought a Weller soldering gun and a soldering pot. The soldering pot melted the solder just fine but when i dip the wire in barely any of the solder will stick to the wire. My soldering joints look awful.
no need for a soldering pot, did you use flux? without flux you will get terrible solder flow. allow your iron to reach the temperature and simply press the solder iron UNDER the wire. then feed the solder into the wire NOT the iron. obviously don’t hold the iron too long to damage the wire insulation

What is the strongest wire that can be soldered to the XT90 connector? Does it have a current rating of 90A?
3:25 speaking of safe sides, with the cord hanging down you're at significant risk of stepping on them and launching a pot of hot lead over your bare legs
Very helpful, thanks. I realized my soldering iron wasn’t hot enough. Bought a new one and it worked perfectly.
Never knew about that soldering pot. Awesome idea! Thanks!!
Looks dangerous. Can you imagine knocking that thing over with all that molten solder? Reminds of the Game of Thrones and that melted silver helmet from the Dothraki.
@@gaffle-411 You just got a sub for GOT reference. I would 100% knock the pot over haha. Everytime I solder i get burnt at least once.
Thanks for your clear and informative DIY video!
Great information my friend, I am switching the XMaxx to xt90 . Cheers 🍻

Helpful video
Thanks buddy great idea with the soldering pot 👍
Are there solderless XT90? What size solder should be using for this?
4:39 thanks for mentioning this, im pretty sure my small iron is the problem 😅
Can you remove the pins on the xt90? The plastic melted on mine
Kindly what is the wattage of the electric solder?
Thanks Joseph

Nice job mate ! Well Done !
How many watt shot i go after?
Just wondering how to solder three cables that size to one XT90 plug. Really challenging but that's what I try to do currently on my scooter.
What size soldering iron do you use
Thanks for the vid , they look way easier than soldering traxxas trx plugs..I'm gonna go to xt90 on everything.
what gauge wire did you use?
Hi, thanks for the video. What tinning pot is that? And What do you think of Maxamps batteries?
What is your Solder spesification ? Can you give us the link for buying it ?
THANK YOU
Thank you!!

which model number weller iron are you using? Thanks and very informative
The DP550PK it's the 260/200 watt version, I have tried the 300W version but found it to be erratic in use hope that helps

Best video on this topic!!!
Btw, is there a way to solder AWG 8 to XT90 please?
You could try it the same way BUT I think the AWG 8 will be too big for the connectors.
@@DriftomaniacsRC Thank you. It is fine. I found datasheet. And it should be designed for designed for awg 8 (according to datasheet)
use a piece of heat-shrink on one or both sides.

I would use FLUX on wire and on pins.

That is how i like soldering. The xt60 cant take much heat. I melted so much plastic...
NEVER...EVER Blow your soldering. You'll contaminate it with more oxygen than it is supposed to have. You'll get a bad connection!
Mmh!we sell 2-3k sets of leads a year how many do you sell btw????
How many of you were blowing at the screen when he first made the connection?
Thanks for making a video which doesn't pronounce it as "sordaring"...
What is this accent bro? Where are you from
Your soldering wire is too thin. You need thicker wire when dealing with these plugs.
DEANS FTW !
Shucks. You forgot forgot the flux.

Bullcrap, when I do it , it NEVER ends up like that. More like silver balls all on top each other. There's gotta be a better way!
Same here! I think that's where the higher power iron comes in. He said 200-260 watt, think mine is a 60.
Lot of smoking.
A solder gun? Really?
Yes! Really!
