The British Rail Class 159 is a class of British diesel multiple unit passenger trains of the Sprinter family, built in 1989-1992 by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL)'s Derby Litchurch Lane Works as Class 158. Before entering traffic, the original 22 units were modified at Rosyth Dockyard to Class 159 to operate services from London Waterloo to Salisbury and Exeter St Davids, replacing various locomotive-hauled passenger trains. The units were originally branded by Network SouthEast as South Western Turbo.
The units were dedicated to the West of England sector of Network South East, operating services between London Waterloo and Exeter; they also worked services between Salisbury and Southampton and on the Reading to Basingstoke line, replacing elderly DEMUs. They then transferred to the South West Trains shadow franchise in readiness for privatisation.
Upon the privatisation of British Rail, the West of England route passed in 1996 to the South West Trains franchise, which was won by the Stagecoach Group. Starting in 2000, units were progressively refurbished and repainted from Network SouthEast's blue, red and white livery into South West Trains' express livery. Other post-privatisation modifications included clearer LED destination displays, upgraded air-conditioning, and more openable windows.
Currently, the Class 159s operate mainly from London Waterloo to Salisbury/Exeter in formations of six, eight, or nine coaches (2 × Class 159, 2 × 159 plus 1 × 158, or 3 × 159 respectively) and between Salisbury and Exeter in three- or six-coach formations. Until the December 2009 timetable change, some trains continued beyond Exeter to Paignton, Plymouth and Penzance; these usually operated as three-coach units, though at weekends there were some six-coach formations. These services are now operated by the Great Western Railway. The service to Bristol Temple Meads is now also in the hands of Class 159s.
Since 2006, the original Class 159 fleet of 22 has been supplemented by eight three-coach 158s (renumbered into the 159/1 series) and 11 two-coach Class 158s. The decision to standardise on 158s and 159s allowed the nine Class 170 'Turbostar' units to be transferred to other operators. Eight went to First TransPennine Express, with the remaining unit going to Southern for integration into Class 171 Turbostars.
    Accidents and incidents
On 4 January 2010, Class 142 diesel multiple unit 142029 collided with a train composed of two Class 159 units at Exeter St Davids. Nine people were injured.
On 31 October 2021, South Western Railway Class 159 unit 159102 collided with a Great Western Railway Class 158 train at Fisherton tunnel in Salisbury.

Looks a very nice model . I have a Scotrail 158 . As you found out they have a motor in each driving car . The decoration is superb it looks stunning . It also is a very smooth runner . However it sounds like a whaling banshee while running , beating some of my old Lima models when it comes to screeching . I phoned my retailer to send it back but was informed “they are all like that” he further sent me videos of him testing some and indeed they were the same . There is a theory that it’s the pulse wave modulation of some controllers that’s causing the noise . I’m not convinced . I think it’s just the motor cavitating . To fix that you would need to take the body off and I’m really a bit scared to do that for the moment . I think if you pack the motor with a bit of tape that might solve the issue . However for a £280 model that my 158 was it is really not good enough .
I think Bachmann do a fantastic job of parting the enthusiast from his money . Not convinced these are worth it compared to others . Frankly my Hornby 156 which was £130 cheaper while obviously being very basic , runs much better

Your right, the decoration is superb. It's a shame that it does make the noise and that all of them are like it but like you say, it is poor for how much it costs. Honestly I'm not too bothered with the noise because I do have some older models that make noise. The camera did also make it sound louder than it actually does.
Your right with Bachmann being experts at charging big money. I don't think it is worth it but it is better detail wise and it is dcc ready compared to the old tooling but I'm glad I managed to get mine for £250. The rrp for this is absolutely pathetic. I can't see how these companies are gonna attract younger people with how much they charge these days, particularly Bachmann.

Very lovely model man. Wow, £400 pounds? Probably around $600 US Dollars? That is freaking crazy man. Isn’t this the second expensive one you have? And two three pole motors for £400 pounds? Come on Bachmann! Why you never install awesome five pole motors for better performances is beyond me. GAH! 🙄
Tis a great model though. 🤘

£400 is worth exactly $484.39. Yes I did just search that up because why not. The last expensive one I had was the class 411 which was £420 and that has probably gone up in price as well. Bachmann just love to charge ridiculous prices for their multiple units. I don’t understand why they put two 3 pole motors though, maybe they though two instead of one 5 pole but it would have been even better if they had put two 5 pole motors. Apart from those parts though, I do love it. Sadly I never got to see this livery in real life but it is still one of my favourites.

Very nice looking model. What a difference being Dcc ready compared the older Bachmann 58s which I bought a number of years ago and didn't realise it wasn't even dcc ready.. just for interest regarding engine noise I parchely striped down my Bachmann 108 and re oiled the gear train , motor and wheel bearings and it now runs virtually silent... I remember being told that they all sound the same !

I know the feeling. I got an old tooled 158 a few years ago and when I found out it wasn't dcc ready I was disappointed so when I heard Bachmann announce this I thought 'I know it is gonna be expensive but I must get one'. I certainly look into what you say about the re-oiling.

Do you proof-play your videos first? The volume increases MASSIVELY around 28mins when the music plays! Next time please try and normalise the overall sound level...
