Another great repair, this one a particularly tricky job. You are quite the inspiration. As a result of watching your videos I have tried, and succeeded in putting right several of my own old locos. Thank you.

I sign class 158 on my traction card, by far the best units to work :) Amazing job as always restoring life into faulty trains

Great video . I don't know how much ends on the cutting room floor with cursing and local descriptive phrases but you seem calm and relaxed with it . Great model . 👍

Similar issue with some ancient scalextric cars I was renovating a while back. Prone to split axle gears which eventually caused them to stop running. Replaced them with a successful result. Another great repair Bill.

Nice job, Bill! I have been 3D printing gears for my old split chassis and other locos. It has been well worth the effort. If parts are completely unavailable, there is a modern solution for that problem. I have printed body parts, too, like missing smoke deflectors. And completely remanufactured a front clip to encorporate mountings for led lighting. That was an old Hornby LMS Maroon 4-6-2 Duchess of Sutherland. Keep up the good work, I am always looking forward to your next video. Thank you!

If you haven't already done so, consider listing the parts on ebay, as you can be certain you won't be the only person needing them!

The old bachmann 158 is a fantastic models and even today is still one of the best DMUs that was made by bachmann, as an owner of one myself in the WYPTE livery I can say it is a great DMU and I have had no problems with mine, if you are looking or one Bill you can pick these old ones up from various places for very reasonable prices, when I got mine it only cost me £75.
When it comes to split axles and gears this issue can be avoided if people are willing to take part in some certain actions that can reduce the likelihood of an axle or gear becoming split. some of the things that can be done are regular checking of the gears which isn’t very difficult, either I clipping the bogie frame like on this DMU or unscrewing the plastic base on the bottom of steam locomotives can allow a person access to the axles and gears.
If an axle or an axle with a gear on it has started to split pull the wheels off the axle then apply superglue to each end of the axle then reapply the wheels to the axle, this is another simple job that I have done many times or various locomotives split chassis locomotives that I have in my collection of locomotives, one time I even superglued a whole axle together that had broken into very small parts and that axle is still together to this day and the model still runs well to this day, other models that I have glued the wheels directly to the axles are another bachmann b1 which is older than the other one I have mentioned in this comment and an old mainline J72, both of these run very well.
While split gears and axles is annoying it is an issue that can be avoided and people need to start doing the things that I do here because the things that I have stated here can reduce the chance of a gear or axle splitting to the point where it could be irreparable and can allow models with these nylon axles and gears to run and run reliably.

I am impressed by your level of tenacity and knowledge to identify a problem. The chaps in the high viz jackets obviously did their bit, no doubt. Also, lovely looking scenery as well, and a nice place to go for a walk.

Another excellent and interesting investigation and as usual, thoroughly entertaining. Many herds of donkeys years ago, I was a Maintenance Electrician and used to work on all sorts of electronic stuff. In those situations when resisters etc needed changing in delicate locations where solder could become a problem, I used to have a small tubular device known as solder sucker! Heat the solder to be removed up, press the button on the sucker and behold! Solder gone and previously blocked hole clear and reusable without any further faffing about needed. Should be on amazon (Although other retailers are available!) and well worth a few quid to enlarge a toolkit! (along with the carefully bent bits of wire that will only ever do one specific job and the array of bits that you have but cannot, for the life of you, remember what they are or why you have them)

I have one. But usually would need three hands to be able to use it properly. I'm not very good with a soldering iron.

Split gears seem to be a perennial problem with Bachmann (and some Farish) locos. Got an 7& B-unit in n-gauge with same problem but they are SO hard to source!. Great result, Bill. Cheers, Jim L

Very nice model. You have your gauge clearances down to a tight tolerance. No need to mind the gap on your layout. Some of my passengers need a taxi to get from coach to platform :-)

Good fun working on modern models. I've got two of the 108's in BR green, I remember those from my days sitting at Ayr station or running up Glasgow in one. Split gears from Bachmann is a problem and it does occur quite regularly, I have two S&D 7F's with the same problem that one day I'll fix.

    Nice model that!
Love watching you perform open-heart surgery on these models and bringing them back to life!
I used to have an OO layout many, many years ago, but then we swapped to N gauge to fit more in the room we had as a train room.
No longer have any layout but still a strong interest in all aspects of model railways. All the N gauge stuff is in the loft somewhere..!
    Best wishes from Merseyside!

Get some solder braid. If you want to clean up where there's already been soldering, add some fresh solder, then soak up with the solder braid. I use it as part of the tools for rebuilding and repairing PCBs.

Split gears is also affecting Heljan on some of their O guage diesel locomotives. I assume it's the tight fit of the axle shaft into the gear that is causing the material to stress snd eventually fail.

Split gears are a VERY common problem in N scale Bachmann stuff. The ones of white plastic seem more susceptible than the black ones.

I have 6 of these 158/159's, and for a model that came out in the mid 90's, it's still a great model... even though it has been eclipsed by the new version.
As regards you wanting a ScotRail marked 158, they're easy to convert from any Class 158 in this livery.
All you need to do is remove the original 'Regional Railways' lettering (which was added during 1991) with IPA, and buy some transfers fro Fox Transfers (code no F4247).

    • @oobill
      @oobill  2 роки тому

Thanks for that. I really like the Saltire livery but I'll keep my eye open for a Regional Railways bargain too.

Hi Bill, try some soldering braid tape it will soak up solder from boards and pickups leaving holes clear, great video.

Trouble here was desoldering would probably loosen the resistors as well. I just don't like messing around with soldering on PCBs of any sort if I can help it. Just drilled a wee hole for the wire and job done!
