Thanks for sharing your content. Have been thinking of sharing my own 33years in Germany. Hope I can connect with you my sister because I know I have a lot to share.
As a Jamaican immigrant living in the USA for a lot longer than 25 years, this is the best discourse I have heard of someone summarizing their life in another country. My sister, your presentation is very candid, honest and balanced. Well done! I just stumbled upon your channel but it is truly a breath of fresh air amid the many voices decrying racism, violence, crime, and lawlessness (and rightfully so) around us in our new adopted countries. But life is what we make of it (the good, the bad and the ugly) and with God's help we most assuredly will emerge victorious and you have certainly demonstrated that. Blessings!
Same question I asked myself when I first walked the streets of Downtown Toronto in 2018 looking at all the buildings I thought to myself. There is no way I will not find a desk here. Thank you for the inspirational message
I came here with my family ( hubby + 3 kids) in 2022 as a student, i started my professional work in 2023. A Proudly South African, i miss my country everyday, my plan to go back home will NEVER change, to continue from where i left in making the difference and contributing to the economy of my beloved country and more specially serving the people of my nation.I cannot complain about Canada, people here are nice and what my family understands is that no matter how much we love it here, SA will always be our home sweet home, the place of our origin, our roots and our culture!🥰
This is why South Africa is well developed than Nigeria. Their citizens have this sense of service and hold dear their country at heart. 92% of SA resides in SA. They go back home after few years abroad. But you see Nigerians, they’re unpatriotic & would rather be slaves abroad than be a King in their country. Very unpatriotic people. Go serve your country.
Very good content 👌. I'm Kenyan in my first year in Canada. I've met a few people who don't have very nice things to say about Canada. I thank God I found this channel. Can't wait to see what God has in store for me in this great land!
This was very enlightening. I too left Nigeria in 1999 to the UK, I go back regularly (1-2x a year), however, I DONT think of going back to live. Sadly, year on year going back, things have been consistently declining, even if this weren’t the case, my life/livelihood has firmly taken root in the UK. I guess it’s the sentiment and sense of belonging that perhaps plays mind games with me atimes to consider a possible return, but in reality, for me personally, that a chapter long gone and closed. In my old age, I prefer to be where there’s easily available structures (hospitals/carehome/etc) than been in a country that I haven’t lived in for years all for the sake of nostalgia. But to each their own and wherever your journey takes you and your family, may God blessings and protections and guidance follow you through.
@Moabayi-yf6ul Anti immigration sentiments exist everywhere these days, even in Canada, too. I think it is fueled by the current tough economic situation all over the world. And some people take advantage of it. As I have said in my videos, these people are not the majority as the majority of people are good and want to live in peace with other people. At the end of the day, we are more alike than we are different, and the prayer is that we can all see this and learn to love our neighbors as ourselves. My 2 cents. Thanks for watching!

Wow! That is a very long time. Yes, missing our home country is normal, especially if we grew up there before moving. Thank God for the option to move back home if we choose. The most important thing is the impact we make with our lives, not necessarily where we live. I wish you many more strong and healthy years 🙏🏾. Thanks for watching!

I absolutely love this video! It feels like you’re speaking directly to me. As I navigate my mid-30s, retirement is constantly on my mind. I’m actively investing in my future through various financial avenues, including real estate and stocks. Yet, I find myself pondering: Do I want to settle here forever, or will I return to Nigeria to enjoy my investments? I haven’t fully made up my mind yet, but as you wisely said, time will tell. Hearing from someone who has walked this path is truly inspiring. Thank you for sharing your story.

You are on the right track for starting early and thinking about and investing in your future. I wish you the very best in your journey. Thank you so much for watching and for being a part of my community!
I've been away since 2003, first to study and now working and raising a wonderful family. originally from Ghana, I visit often and I'm planning to go back eventually. Not a single regret. Every opportunity and challenge has been worth the experience. Thank you for being an inspiration. There's a proverb in my Nzema language that translates loosely " the one who has travelled is the one who has lived, not one who has lived longest." It's good to be adventurous. God bless!
If one can afford to live in a luxurious estate in Lagos , Abuja , PH , Enugu or any other big city in Naija at old age, that is arguably the best thing to do in order to enjoy all round good weather and natural foods . One can occasionally visit their kids overseas or take a vacation to beautiful places. Your retirement savings won’t be drained quickly due to relatively low cost of living when compared to living in Canada or US at old age. These posh estates like Harmony Estate PH , Lekki Phase 1, Shell co-operative Estate PH etc are top notch with all the facilities and serenity.
Things are different for different people. For example, a woman who japa-d as a married mother but is now single abroad, with all her children and grandchildren abroad, might be better off staying abroad with them than returning home to restart by herself. Japada is not for everyone.
I hope these estates have ambulances and firefighters nearby that can arrive within minutes if something happens? I hope incidents like a bike rider who had an accident by the roadside, ignored by the police, with no ambulance to call and no passerby to help(rather, taking photos) until he gave up the ghost after over two hours of fighting for his life, won't happen in the estates you mentioned.
Congratulations to you! I love hearing stories like this. I have been in Finland for 14 years and I have regrets. I did not even get internship until almost 13 years in the country and that has been the only professional opportunity I got apart from studying. I hope to move elsewhere soon.
I think moving back to Nigeria at an advanced age is very OK if you can afford a house in a posh estate in Lagos , Abuja , PH or any other city and enjoy all round good weather conditions . Occasionally, one can visit their kids living abroad or travel to other countries for vacation. Nigeria is a lovely country to be if you have your money to spend. I just found this channel today, as an immigrant in the United States from sierra leone. My sister you are such an inspiration. Thank you for doing this
This is great! As a young Nigerian that came to Canada for uni and stayed - it's so refreshing to hear from older/wiser Nigerian-Canadians that truly understand the entire spectrum of the decisions we have to make and what it takes to thrive. Ese gan gan.
I agree with you that people will still be moving into and out of Nigeria even when there is good governance and better economy. But the reasons for moving will change and less of economic reason. At the moment, Nigerians 'japa' because of suffocating economic situation. As a Nigerian who has lived in Europe and Australia for more than thirty years, believe you me, the desire to return back home increases the more successful you are in diaspora. When you have acquired all those degrees, bought and paid off that big house and achieved financial success, the feeling even gets stronger and there is still that void inside you that needs to be filled, the desire to go back and help install good leadership and make your home country function well as your adopted country. If Nigeria is, only by one quarter, well run and safe as the country where I am presently living, I will move back to Nigeria, and in a jiff too. Well done, another good video!
I hear you. I do think that there are very many ways we outside the country can help with change in Nigeria, including going over physically, if desired. We hope and pray for that change happens in our life time. I appreciate you watching!
Great video 👍🏾thanks for sharing your perspective. I'm grateful for my parents immigrating to the UK in the 60s/70s. I'm now in my early 30s and have an older sister who immigrated here 🇬🇧 and has moved to Canada some years ago. Nice to see Nigerians thriving ...😊😊😊
Japa is not a term applicable to me. I do well in every place I find myself. But honestly, I want to travel because I want to see what other parts of the world looks like. I want to experience the racism. I want to be a part of stories. I'm tired of sitting in one place and living among the same people. So, next year, canada will see me, and I will see her. She will greet me, and I will greet her. And in a few more years, other parts of the world will see me. And in the end, I will be able to say I CAME, I SAW AND I CONQUERED. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
I love it! We have only one life to live, why live it stuck in one place? And yes, i dont know why people think you can only thrive in a particular location. I wish you God's speed in your adventures. We look forward to seeing you in Canada! Thank you so much for watching and sharing this perspective🙏🏾
Your case is the only one that I will support people leaving Nigeria 🇳🇬. You want to see the world . Tell the embassy that because it is a good reason to travel. I left too for the same reason not because Nigeria was not good at the time in fact my life was better in Nigeria than when I arrived abroad.
You want to experience racism you said? Are you aware that what you just wished for may include racially motivated attack’s against your life? Obviously you don’t understand the depths of racism. Although Things appear milder in Canada compared to other parts of the western world, immigrants do lose their lives at the hands of racists. Some years ago in Kansas, a white kan stormed into a restaurant and shot two Indians dead thinking they were from Middle East.
I don't believe in luck at all, so I don't think that i stumbled onto your video. Ma you are God sent and I believe that coming across your video today is divinely appointed by God I'm in the process of relocating to Canada and I was in need of some answers since I've been surrounded by negative talk all around me. Thank you so much mommy may the good Lord keep you and bless you for us. More grace Ma.❤ Much love from Botswana. 😊
I hope you got some answers. Life is a journey we have to live by faith. I pray the Lord perfect all that concerns you🙏🏾. Thanks for watching, and welcome to the channel!
Okay. This is my Internet big Aunty right here. That moment you said immigration is as old as it's been in the scriptures was it for me. Will camp here for more content. I decided to wait till my late 30s to relocate, I have no regrets. Every phase is a blessing. Do your own thing. Thank you. ❤
Thank you for such inspiration message. Been here since 2021, settled well with my hubby, financially independent now. Thanking God for His faithfulness throughout the ups and down while living here.
Business environment here is very toxic and tricky. Agric business is no exception. When you combine these with security issues that restrict every form of farming activity, you have to consider it well before retiring into farming here. Yours truly is a retiree too, but from a Nigerian organization and a farmer. I can’t but share this experience. Please am not discouraging you sir.
This video brought me to tears and gave me clarity. We relocated to Canada five months ago as a young couple. I have wept several times and questioned our decision to move here. It hasn’t been easy starting afresh with two children under three while trying to secure our dream jobs. Childcare has been challenging, but we’ll keep trusting God and take each day as it comes. Thank you, ma’am.
I am so happy that you found this valuable. It is tough in the beginning, but it does get better. I have many videos on the channel where I share many tips on how to be successful as an immigrant. I hope these will also help. I encourage you to stay positive, keep trusting God, and not give up. Thank you so much for watching!🙏🏾
Thank you so much for this. It’s our fourth year in Canada and I am encouraged. This video is ray of light shining in the midst of so much negativity about Canada immigration.
Going two decades now, for me it is both and, knowing what I now know that this land was forcefully taken by the settlers it is all about keeping my heritage and ensuring having a presence in the place of my origin and be proud of that place no matter the current drama or issues.
@@ThisSideOfLifeWisdom I don't really dwell on the concept called "old age" but the idea is to go back and forth preferable 6 months here and 6 months in Nigeria and allow things to unfold with passing time. Keep up the good work of sharing your ideas/thoughts.
Great video Sister Diekola! It was like that for us when we decided 15 years ago to leave everything we knew to the unknown here in Canada.Looking back now very well worth it. We travel back and forth to visit and hope to stay more in naija in the coming years. We were so blessed to not have to sell off to move in the first place.I can say now that wife an I are enjoying both worlds as our kids are now adults in their chosen fields in Canada. God is good!!
I love your content and the analogy of Abraham leaving his native land to immigrate to a new land where God showed him. I also agree that people immigrate to different places for a variety of reasons. I've been in the US for a long time and have a family of my own since i arrived from Kenya. The biggest challenge came from my parents pressuring me to move back. It is something I wrestled with many years back but ultimately made a decision to stay. I realized that I can make an impact from here in whatever way I can from here. Like you said - life is what you make of it. Thanks for sharing. Good content.
To me, your impact is what matters, not where you are located. You can always change your location, too. May God grant us the wisdom to do what is best for us. Thank you so much for watching!
"Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt and honest journey! It’s inspiring to see the resilience, growth, and success you’ve achieved over 25 years in Canada. As someone considering a big move, hearing about the challenges and rewards firsthand is incredibly motivating. Your story gives hope to those of us dreaming of new opportunities abroad. Looking forward to more insights from your experience!"
Young folk like myself are in dire need of profound, mature and level-headed perspectives on immigration like this right here, drawn from decades of experience. Greatly appreciate your candour. A gem of a video!

You are right. Everyone right the right to any country he/she wishes. The most important thing is to know your purpose and not just move because of the trend as many people do today.
First time watching you and I love this. This is very similar to my life in the UK. I came all by myself about 20 years ago. I've since married, had kids and I have a career I'm proud of. Keep it up!😊
I just came across your channel today and I must say, you are beautiful and I love everything you said. I and my family also moved to Canada 3 years ago. You gained a subscriber!
Thank God for everything sister l live in U S with my husband and children at first it was a little tough in our first year after that with the help of friends and church members we were able to get ourselves together. I went back to school likewise my husband all my children were doing fine two graduated and doing their masters. We visited Nigeria in December 2023 after 15 years abroad my sister it was a regret we provide all amenities to make our mansion looks welcoming for our children but bad road mess everything up. Presently there is nothing like JAPADA with me unless everything is better.
It is really sad to think about Nigeria and where we could be as a nation. We hope and pray that things get better in Nigeria. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's very much appreciated 🙏🏾
Out all UA-cam videos, yours stands out @This Side Of Life with Diekola . You speak God’s wisdom. I’m in Canada and I wouldn’t mind if you could mentor me. I will stay tuned!
Having lived here since 1989 when i moved here with my parents from Naija i can totally identify with you. I miss Lagos and at times I almost wish i could move back but i also have come to the realization that I have become too Canadian at this point for that to be anything other than a dream.
I think we have the ability to adapt wherever we find ourselves. The world is such a different place today that you can live wherever you want, but should you? Based on your vision and passion, conviction and purpose? Those are more important than your location, in my opinion. You should try to go home from time to time too. I enjoy doing that. Thanks for watching!
This was my thinking. I lived in Canada for 13 years, visiting once in that time. I’m back in Nigeria and after a year I’m still adjusting. The thing is, there are lots of people like me. Many people who constantly travel or have just moved back. Many are thriving in Nigeria. Many are still traveling back and forth.
Same came to the UK as a teen in 1989. This is home I visit my other home Uganda but can't see myself working and living in uganda with a young child. Things are so different there to adjust can't be easy!
My first time coming across your channel and I love instantly ❤ Very put together video Thank you for so much wisdom And amen to the prayers at the end of the video
Thank you for this authentic video of you sharing your story of life of a Nigerian emigrant in Canada. How lovely the way you intertwine scriptural references and yoruba proverbs while revealing a balance of challenges and victories along your journey. What kept me glued and huming is the background music. Please Ma'am what's the name of the artist of your soundtrack?
I appreciate your feedback. Thank you very much! The music is from UA-cam's audio library - Island dream by Chris Haugen🙂. I am so glad it made a difference on the video for you. Thanks for watching!
thirty years ago - Nigeria was not OK, Abacha was in charge, Abiola won a free and fair election and we know how that ended. It's also interesting that every generation have their age old question of should I stay in the west or go back home. Our parents with their friends came to the UK in the 60s & 70s some stayed and others went back home to Nigeria to an oil booming country that later became a nightmare of an existence for many. i think what ever decision people make they should leave other options open. thanks for sharing x oh also Canadians are one of the friendliest people I've ever met.
True, every child is a child of his/her generation. We pray for wisdom to make the right decisions for our time. Thank you so much for providing your insight. And yes, Canadians are very friendly. I appreciate you watching!
Thanks for your kind feedback. I am so sorry about your job. It is not the end of the world, even though it feels like it is. You should get up and look for another one. Reach out to your network to see who can help. Pray and trust God, and you will bounce back. I wish you the very best. Thanks for watching.
Hearty congrats on your Canadian Silver Jubilee anniversary! Your relatable story is indeed a positive and inspiring one! There are a few Nigerian folks who settled in Winnipeg since the 1980s and also have rich stories just like yours. Wishing you another prosperous twenty-five years ahead!

I hear you. I do think that there are very many ways we outside the country can help with change in Nigeria, including going over physically, if desired. We hope and pray for that change happens in our life time. I appreciate you watching!
This is the best video I’ve watched on living in Canada. Love it.
I appreciate you watching. Thank you very much!🙏🏾
God bless you ma. Just came across your video today. Just kick starting my journey to canada and I trust God for the best❤.
Thank you for watching! Wishing you the very best on your journey🙏🏾!
Great story! Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it!
Amen! Thank you for the beautifully delivered message, ma'am.❤
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
@@sacassashimidrama7088😂😂 Nigerians can be so delusional. The country was never good
@@sacassashimidrama7088 😂😂 Nigerians can be so delusional. The country was never good
You want to experience racism you said?
More grace Ma.❤
Much love from Botswana. 😊
I hope you got some answers. Life is a journey we have to live by faith. I pray the Lord perfect all that concerns you🙏🏾. Thanks for watching, and welcome to the channel!
Love your intelligence in discussing life abroad. I am abroad and have not regretted anything at all. The blessings are countless.
I am happy for you. Thank you so much for watching!
Okay. This is my Internet big Aunty right here. That moment you said immigration is as old as it's been in the scriptures was it for me. Will camp here for more content. I decided to wait till my late 30s to relocate, I have no regrets. Every phase is a blessing. Do your own thing. Thank you. ❤
Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you resonated with the content! Welcome to the Wise Tribe ❤️!
Quite inspiring. I'm definitely subscribing
I appreciate that 🙏🏾. Thank you very much!
Thank you for such inspiration message. Been here since 2021, settled well with my hubby, financially independent now. Thanking God for His faithfulness throughout the ups and down while living here.
I'm very happy for you! Thank you so much for watching!
I have lived in the uk for 35yrs. Finally getting ready to go back and retiring into the farm
Congratulations! Is that Nigeria? What kind of farming? That should be a very interesting experience for you. Thanks for watching!
Someone recently retired in the US and started farming in his home town in Oyo. He was murdered on his farm. 😢
@@carolineakin7107 why are you sharing this exactly? What is your intention?
I am a farmer. Started small and exoanding to 1,000 Acres in 2025. Please Nigeria is very okay for business in the agricultural sector please
It's always like that sis. We all passed through same challenge. You will be fjne
very interesting story. What work for you might not work for somebody else. May God lead us to our destiny path to success.
Amen! I am glad you found it valuable. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this. It’s our fourth year in Canada and I am encouraged. This video is ray of light shining in the midst of so much negativity about Canada immigration.
You are welcome! I wish you the very best with your time in Canada. Thanks for watching!
Going two decades now, for me it is both and, knowing what I now know that this land was forcefully taken by the settlers it is all about keeping my heritage and ensuring having a presence in the place of my origin and be proud of that place no matter the current drama or issues.
By both, do you mean growing old in Canada and also going back to Nigeria? Thanks for watching!
@@ThisSideOfLifeWisdom I don't really dwell on the concept called "old age" but the idea is to go back and forth preferable 6 months here and 6 months in Nigeria and allow things to unfold with passing time. Keep up the good work of sharing your ideas/thoughts.
@@StirUpYourPurpose Got it! Thank you!

Almost the same time I left Nigeria. I am very happy for you. Thank you so much for watching!
Brazil is beautiful. I lived there for a year.
I'm very happy for you! We thank God for His goodness. I wish you continued bliss enjoying both worlds. Thank you very much for watching and sharing!
I agree with you Dieko, know your purpose, stay in your lane and enjoy the ride. Thanks for sharing your journey

Glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate the feedback. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for sharing . Am particularly happy because of your faith in Christ
We give God all the glory🙌🏽. Thanks for watching!

My first time coming across your channel and I love instantly ❤

Our parents with their friends came to the UK in the 60s & 70s some stayed and others went back home to Nigeria to an oil booming country that later became a nightmare of an existence for many. i think what ever decision people make they should leave other options open. thanks for sharing x
oh also Canadians are one of the friendliest people I've ever met.
