    Concept artist and voice actor Trent Kaniuga goes in depth on this behind the scenes look at the making of Final Fight Streetwise a full 10 years later. Trent talks about the challenges of developing a ps2 game, working with a license, and what the primary difference is between AAA successful games and those that don't make the cut. Why did this game fail? What have we learned? Possibly nothing. But possibly... in the bowels of gaming history, we may discover the key to successful game development.

    I absolutely LOVED Final Fight Streetwise. My friends and I were debating in high school if it was David Hayter (Solid Snake) who was the voice of Kyle Travers before we completed the game. I loved the dark, gritty tone of the game. A lot of other franchises in the early to mid 2000's were going from bright, vibrant presentation to less saturated moody presentation ala. Twisted Metal. The game had a killer soundtrack, but most importantly the fighting mechanic was intuitive and very reminiscent of the classic arcade Final Fights. Thanks for sharing this Trent!

    I put so many hours into this game, despite its flaws there was a certain charm to this game and I could see where you were trying to go with the concept. kinda sad to have come across this video a while year later but it definitely confirmed the heart that went into the project despite Capcom's misdirection.
    I'm currently developing a 2d brawler influenced by this game and others. thank you for your works.

    Love the moments where you switch into the Kyle voice. Was surprised to hear you have not done much in voice acting, but I think your work as Kyle was pretty great. As for the game itself, I don't think it's as awful as the general reception makes it out to be, and I actually enjoy a lot of the game up until the junkies start rioting. Glad to see you looking back on it fondly, the artwork is great and I think a lot of the ideas that made it into the first half of the game were decently executed. Slamming the Weasel dude's head with a door on two separate occasions was hilarious, and I actually liked how gritty the game's aesthetic managed to be. This game came out around the same time as the first Yakuza game, and the parts I liked the most seemed to line up with gameplay in Yakuza - and look where that series is now. It was sorta ahead of its time, but I do wish the last portion of the game was more in-line with the first three quarters - it kinda gets hijacked by Malebolgia around the 80% mark. Prior to that, the game is solid, though, and I don't think it deserves quite the degree of slating that it received.

Your cody and haggar are the best version ever. I do a custom action figures of both basead on your art. I wanna thank you and for me, its still a very nice game, totally worth of final fight franchise.

    I discovered this game when I was like 6 years old, and that was in 2010. Me and my best friend used to play it the whole time. We totally loved it, man, every single aspect of the game. We never got to finish it during that time because we got stuck on the Bijou Hotel doors puzzles xD. In late 2021 we found the game again, so I turned on my PS2 and the game was still running. After all those years, the game was so fun to play. We finished the game in that week of 2021 December, and we didn't upgrade any of Kyle's move list or health and stamina because we didn't know we could HAHAHA. It was a crazy feeling, a closed chapter. We looked at each other during the final cutscene and did a handshake, then we looked at the screen, Kyle and Cody were doing kinda the same thing. Pretty cool if you ask me xD. We clapped our hands during the credits and waited for them to end.
    I don't know if you'll read the whole story, but I just wanted to share it anyways. It is not just a part of your and Capcom's history, it is also a part of my best friend and my history too, a core memory for us. Anyways, thanks for making this game, man

    Game was great but now that i hear all these reviews and rates on the game i will love this game no matter what, why? because i grew up during these times, i was young when i played this like around 4-5 and was fun to go around kicking ass staying up tryna get through some levels in the story and figuring out where to go and shit, the co op too! 2 players me and my bro going through these waves of people til we die in the game. Im a person who enjoyed the game and doesnt care what people say this was my game growing up as a child and so yeah. Cody one of my favorite characters glad to see hes in SFV so yeah

    SF6 is the colorful, expressive "urban appeal" game they should've allowed Streetwise to be.
    I pine for the extremely slim chance of Kyle making a return, he was given a redesign for an entry in the SFV database, and I want more of them dulcet tones in my ear while picking up cash-wads and hamburgers in the streets of Metro City lol

    Hey buddy, thanks for this awesone video. I love what you done for the franchise, you created, by your designs, a very nice vision for the future of this characters, something more dark and adult. OK, some points of game history has big problems , and are kind of silly , but this atmosphere , that you helped to criated, is amazing. I like so that much, that a customized some action figures inspaired on your concepts for this matured final fight heroes. You have my gratitude !!!!!

    You know, I used to say that this game was really crappy, and the CD i had wasn't in good condition either, so I had various problems but, seeing you commenting about it and explaining some thoughts behind everything made me see the game with new eyes, I now can see the beauty of creation behind it, and since you asked us to share our opinions and thoughts about the game here I go.
    The "zombie" guys... that is something that I still can't like it, it felt so out of place for me, I never had other experience with Final Fight so this game was my first Final Fight game, and the first hour of the game was like a comic urban fighter, funny steryotipes and such (And i don't mean it as a critique), and then out of nowhere there is these infected guys that looked more from a sci-fi shooter or survival, it broke the atmosphere in my opinion, if i'd continued playing more maybe this wouldn't seem so bad, so I don't like to use it as a reason to call the game "crappy". But that alone wouldn't be a problem if the gameplay didn't felt so generic (I still want to believe that was me the dumb one when playing, but all the fights seemed like the same but with different enemies).
    Also you emphasized the fact that you had to make the NPCs more "generic", this is something that really bothers me in games, I see your work now and I can feel that each piece is something by itself, that together forms a bigger picture, feels like a NPC isn't just a fisher for the sake of being a fisher, he is a person that happens to be the fisher we need to buy the golden bait from (or something like that) and it adds to the universe in a way that make me want to enter in this world and discover more, makes everything more orgarnic and even though it's a fantasy, makes it feels more "real".
    One of my favorites games is Ookami also from Capcom, and I can remember at least 75% of the NPCs in that game; but there are implications like the art style which allows more space to character design, and some other game aspects that are irrelevant for this topic, But my point is, if the characters in Street Wise had this level of individuality it would probably be seen with better eyes today, i don't know, it may be me the one who wants something that the game isn't. And I'm not saying that you designs were souless, but they're not as alive as other things I've seen you done (still love you man xD)
    Overall your work was amazing, I really enjoyed the main characters design, specially Haggar since he feels more cartoony than the rest (Which you can guess it's my favorite kind of game). I really like your style, in fact your name is the one I carry with me, and whenever I see the chance of mentioning you in a conversation about WOW or game designs I do. But yea, it's sad to see that the artists involved in the project have to cut their creativity, but that's business I guess.
    By the way sorry for the long comment it's just that I got carried away, but I'd like to ask you about the very game I mentioned, Ookami, have you ever played that game? I'd like to know your thoughts on it if so. And Yes, I'd love to see more commentaries about your works in the game industrie, it's revealing. Thanks for the video, hope to see more, again i'm sorry for going so far with it, if you didn't really got my point i'll gladly explain it separately for you. hugs!!

    Great insight into the making a game. Pity the artist was over ruled on such great ideas.
    Years ago I had an idea called Final Fight Redemption with all the original 3 characters playable.
    1. Thur. 5pm. Cody gets out of jail, gets a job in Poisons night club Poisons Cure where things kick off.
    (Get to a point)
    2. Thur. 5pm Introduce Guy who's been called back to Metro City by Lucia Morgan now chief of a corrupt Metro PD, she needs help.
    (Get to a point)
    3. Thur. 5pm Introduce Mike Hagger in his town house bidding the new mayor of Metro City and his soon to be son in law a good night, but he's attacked by 3 masked assailants.
    (Get to a point)
    Eventually have all 3 come together and see which path unfolds.

    • @SynthLizard8
      @SynthLizard8 8 років тому

      Trent Kaniuga So "generic" was a artistic design choice when it came to a Street Fighter universe?
      Also, don't know how it being 12 years ago is a excuse, it's not like the PS2 and Xbox couldn't have fancy environments at the time.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  8 років тому +7

      +PurpleStorm8 Yes, The intention was to make a more realistic "GTA inspired" Final Fight. It was the biggest point of frustration for the whole team, but it was our instruction from Capcom. 12-13 years ago, I was a 1st year concept artist trying to infuse flavor and style into a game, where the publisher didn't want flavor and style. Of course, the decision bit them in the ass in the end, as the game did not sell well. But I feel like many games have pretty generic, realistic environments these days. In that way, we were ahead of our time!
