Jimmy Stewart is aces in my book too, but Carol Lombard!!? In the SAME picture? A great American TREAT! I knew that she was a comedy genius, but to see her act in this Drama blows me away and keeps pace with Jimmy. What a pair! What a treat this film was on a sweltering summer night. 😊❤

Thank you so very much for uploading these old gems. Jimmy and Carole were a wonderful team :)
I had pneumonia as a baby, and it is true that every minute counts in such cases.
It was already midnight when my frightened mom decided to take me to the nearest hospital. They said, I was too small for their institution and that I would have to be transported to another hospital that was one hour away.
Then a doctor, who was on his way home, took a quick look at me, saw that I was regurgitating blood, grabbed me, and said "There is no time!!". He was still in his trench coat while he was taking me away, and giving instructions to find a room for my mom. She had to stay because she was still breastfeeding me.
For some days they have been fighting for my life.
When I finally made it, the doctor told my mom to go to St. Marie`s Church and thank Mother Marie for my life.
Whenever I watch this movie, I have to think of my poor mom, and how scared she must have been.

How good of the pilot to fly despite the storm, and be so conscientious. And of the boss to be humane, and of the Dr to care. And so correct about shyness, inhibition and low self-esteem: When somebody else is at stake and needs our help and we can forget about ourselves, we can step out of the fearsome paralysis and be the man. Cf his Guardian Angel's solution in "Its a Beautiful day", as James Stuart is about to drown himself out ofutter despair, and his angel jumps in for him to save it while forgetting his own plight...

This is the first Carole Lombard movie I watched.
In the late sixties (1969, I think) ABC had a retrospective of David O. Selznick films, and this one was shown. I wondered who this pretty woman was. I didn't know anything about her career or her early death.
One thing I have always liked about Carole Lombard is her performances hold up very well. She had none of the theatrics of stars from her era, she was always more realistic.

@@Nortongroove That one is fun to watch. Universal offered that role to William Powell. He told them he would play Godfrey only if they also cast Lombard as Irene. Powell and Lombard were divorced by this time but had remained close friends. As a matter of fact, when Powell had colorectal cancer a few years later, Lombard was there to give him moral support. He survived, of course, and lived another 45 years.

Worth a watch and thanks for the upload, Retrospective. Not a classic by any means, the last act goes against the comedic feel of the rest of the movie and though the leads are always the stars we know them to be, the quality of writing and slow direction does not allow anyone to really shine. The new year scenes are probably the only stand out moments for me and it is uncanny how close the scene at the table, when Stewart is wearing a crown, is to the similar scene in Billy Wilder's 'The Apartment'.

They should only show up for Secret Wars. From there pass the torch on to someone else, may it be another actor or character that should be enough. They shouldn't have to go back to them to bail them out of trouble do to poor project writing. There are to many good stories in Marvel's catalog to pull from. Let those actors go and be free to do other things, they did their time. Let someone else shine.

Sad the character didn't see his family as the treasure wealth not everyone has a family even then often pretty awful and devastating to each other. Diamonds made by slave labor to a mink coat made by animal abuse slave labor as well. Marketplace still runs off slave labor practices continuing now.
To the baby sold as property medical debt slavery what would have happened if he couldn't have paid the medical bill they sell the baby at auction? Hold it for ransom? See not much has changed actually got much worse. And debt slavery still happening to lousy bossholes.

HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jimmy Stewart left fame, fortune and Hollywood to fight in WW II flying combat missions. He stayed in the reserves and became a colonel. One of his boys was killed in Vietnam. BO could only dream of that kind of service.
