This is part of a new interview series Paul Gilbert (bit.ly/2nzjJIv) recently filmed up in Portland with scene legend and jazz guitarist Dan Balmer. They discuss many musical topics and have several jams and musical exchanges of ideas.
Please note: this is just a little highlight video from the full interview featuring some discussion and some jamming. This is only a small sample of the much larger interview (which is almost 2 hours long!). ArtistWorks members can find it online in the Music+ area of the Rock Guitar school.

Paul still loves being a student. It's always so great to see his positive attitude.
I think cause real masters (as professors -scientists) are in some sense "students" until the end of their life - they still try to learn something new
sometimes the teacher becomes the student
True professionals have a desire to keep growing in their journey to enhance and compliment their repertoire.
@@yonathanvalensia9613 Can't disagree. Paul newer stuff is pretty good and pretty underrated.
I've met Paul a few times and he was a very kind, humorous and humble person.
0:57 - 1:26 thirty seconds of pure bliss. I used to watch Balmer at jazz clubs in Portland back in the '90s, he's always been so fun to listen to!
How can PG ever be faulted? He's always open to exploring new styles and is willing to learn. A real musician.
kamaboko1 Alex skolnick is another example of this attitude
Yes.
paul gilbert besides being a excellent guitarist and super humble , I am unconditional fan
I like the way how gilbert listen to his senior...this is how one can get more better...i am proud to follow gilbert...is anyone here feels the same????
no
that c major jam was just so fluid and holy shit eargasmic even tho it was the most basic key to jam in
Its a cool idea so basic that its easily overlooked.
I've probably listened to it 15-17 times today. Just a great sound. The notes fit all together. I love the part from 5:00 too 5:06.
Who cares what key it was in? It is all the same, and all just as hard/easy. Keys don't change that.
That off the cuff Cmaj jam was awesome. Could have listened to that all day.
That c major pentatonic solo from Paul was awesome!
Jim Knight it effin' made me smile out of the blues (pun here) :D
jazz guy: plays tons of great phrases
PG: plays run of the mill pentatonic solo
Typical fan who doesnt know guitar but worships PG: wow the pentatonic was awesome
@@jfar3340 Lol stfu the scale doesn’t matter, it’s the fact that it sounded amazing
@@Johnnysmithy24 yeah Dan sounded amazing we can agree on that.
@@jfar3340 Of course he did
Holy sh*t.. that C major pentatonic solo was awesome!
Paul is type of guy who would be wonderful neighbor. He's about as natural as you can get, but still a great, popular musician. Why is it so many rock "heroes" think they have to be weird assholes?
paul can sound good over anything he is a true master....
I love learning and watching Paul, he has such a look of enjoyment everytime he plays the guitar
wow, I used to live in portland. I know Dan, good to hear him again, But it´s amazing to hear Paul , I was never into his thing, but he´s just incredibly melodic improvising. I´m gonna check him out more now!
I love this video! Paul is an amazing guitarist and he has this infectous curiosity to expand his own knowledge of music and guitar styles and he takes you on the journey with him. You can't help but want to try this for yourself, and at the end of the day, isn't that what music is all about. A shared experience using a language we all love and are learning to speak on our instruments of choice. Keep it up Paul! I love these videos.
Never heard of dan balmer before. This guys got an awesome style.
paul so humble...even though he is a legend a living legend. But always humble...I love em
This series is just brilliant, not only for the content but also by showing how much love for music a legendary, technically superlative hard rock/metal guitar player still has after all these many years and after all his incredible musical accomplishments.
Paul Gilbert, shredder extraordinaire, loves the guitar so much he is still going to school in order to grow musically - brave enough to step out of his own gigantic shadow and to really learn from true greats in other musical genres.
Thanks so much to Paul and everyone else involved!
Just fantastic and a lesson to all musicians everywhere...
If Paul Gilbert comes out with a jazz album I'm buying it.
what jazz album have you bought or listened to recently?
vibrato, but it is kinda jazz fusion
Can see Paul isn't in his element but still has come a long way since the 80's
Man this is awesome. Paul you need to do a
Jazz album as a side project. Haha.
Dan Balmer Is Amazing! :D
That Paul Gilbert can learn from anyone else is a testament to why he is so good. And Dan Balmer is amazing also!
Years ago, I guess when the "United States" album was released, I was really bummed and ran across Paul Gilbert's web page, the old one with all the funny photoshops of his head on all the Beatles meeting Ed Sullivan and the like. It really made me laugh and picked up my spirits so I shot off an email thanking him and "just in case you actually read this" asking about the guitar he was playing in the "Barks" video with he and Freddie Nelson jamming to "Pulsar". Paul actually took the time to answer and tell me what guitar it was, where he bought it (I'm not revealing his "secret" lol! ) and telling me that it "is KILLER." Despite also living in Portland I've not seen or talked to him since that exchange but to my mind he showed himself to be a total class act and a decent human being, in addition to being a crusher on the strings! As for Dan, my mom of all people came home with one of his CDs and it was totally badass! I want to say that one of the songs was called "we'll be right back" or something but that was "around" 1988 so a ways back :) I've not seen Dan live, I was a full on metalhead at the time and the Portland metal scene was thriving and providing a good show at least biweekly but I do remember as a young guitarist being blown away by his chops.
loved this, i could watch this kind of stuff forever. Its fun seeing this part of your journey.
Not only is he a killer player, but he's sporting a Federer hat. I knew I liked this guy
Incredible! Gotta love how Paul still wants to learn while being cinsidered one of the best rock/metal players out there. That solo in C was awesome :D
I'm a huge Gilbert fan and love all his shred-tastic metal in all it's glory, but there's a part of me that would love to see Paul take his chops into the jazz world and see what it would sound like. Would love to hear his ideas over a standard like Autumn Leaves or All the Things You Are.
Respect for Paul Gilbert. Beside the fact that he is one of the greatest rock guitarists, he is so humble and open to learning new things.
its funny to see paul gilbert as a student kind of haha, the greatest !!
these guys are really awesome... PG so open to play different styles...
Oh my godness the tone melts.. as the word itself it melts..!
Awesome!! I can smile for the rest of the week after watching and listening RNR
It seemed like Paul was in student mode until Dan stopped talking during the C major solo. Then he was like "holy shit, i forgot im amazing. Check this out!"
Thank god at least one person that moved to Portland had something to bring to the table.
This might be the best guitar jam on UA-cam! The first Gilbert solo might be one of his best.
C major pentatonic scale sounds so awesome??!!.. I never knew.... Paul Gilbert is Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
I love these videos. Thank you so much.
The little jam in C major sounded great There is a hit song there guys !!
melody is and music is melody! what a great melodic jam!
Paul Gilbert is...just....so....awesome...
I could watch this for hours!
Amazing video. Amazing to see paul as almost mortal (almost)
C maj pentatonic, the sound the peace
Two dudes havin fun with guitars. What could be better?
what an awesome video..just amazing..
Beautiful!
Cuanta infoo!! Gracias x subirlo!!☺👍
That was killer, thank you!!
Gosh I love Pauls tone! is he still playing the vintage moderm marshalls?
How are the shapes called I have to learn to solo like Dan 0:57 ?
Im trying to figure out arpreggios atm, but they dont feel complete
The dude can play!
I loved this
Paul is so versatile
Dan really knows his shit!
yikes... so awesome.. so smooth.
You guys are so good and make it look so easy, I’d like to say”screw you both!!” 🤪🤪
5:25
Me too, Dan.
Me too.
2:50 rime of the ancient mariner
James Evans haha.. and as the albatross fall one by one... lol!

@@ahmadnawarabdkarim6823 lol
Really nice.... love the video. Tasty!
paul looks so happy...
very good!!!
Paul can make it sound good even if not his forte. A true master senpai!
and he's wearing the roger federer hat!
01:04 oh magnifique
Besides PG Mr Balmer is VERY awesome! !!
Love the hypnotic chord. Dont know if i like the solo over it that much tho, would have done something else :)
Nice, paul its modern jazz note outside
4:50 This is the first time I've seen Paul hitting a wrong note. And I don't care.
6:14
Guthrie Govan once hitting some wrong notes too when jamming with bumblefoot on spiderman song.. and i don't care
Huge fan of gilbert, but it's pretty clear here Balmer is way better than gilbert here and it is pretty sick he's seeking knowledge in this pursuit, rather than sticking to blues kinda stuff for like the past decade or something lol
It just seems like there's so much more tension and color to Balmer's phrasing..
What hollow body is Dan Playing? A Gibson?
Looks like Ibanez Artist 2630
THE COOLEST EVERY !!!
paul gilbert wow
Watching Paul jam is like watching GOD creating life.
4:40 how EAAAAAASY it looks like to build the song for somebody who knows what he does :D
didn't know C major pentatonic can be soo good 4:39
Uh, well, you can tell that Mr Balmer is a freakin theory and guitar genius....not that Paul did not acquit himself - he did very well and sounded very musical
That C major penta jam sounds a lot like Maggie May.
That was weird, like hearing Paul do Opeth stuff.
Dan Balmer has a Santana vibe going on....nice
I could watch Paul Gilbert all day. He absolutely loves teaching and is a genuinely real guy. Satch is full of knowledge but not as captivating and can be too technical at times to the point of being boring.
VX84 agreed. Satch is my favorite guitarist of all time but I've really been enjoying watching Paul Gilbert's videos recently
Paul is an exceptional teacher and speaker. A great ambassador for the guitar.
wow...
is he christoph waltz older brother?
1:13
0:42 Good to beat you... we'll yeah, in jazz probably.
don't underestimate the power of old jazzers! ever
I didint Paul is that great improviser. Amazing that he has such a great ear...
those a grown up chords!
Paul Gilbert is amazing but why the fuck is everyone talking about him here? Dan Balmer is playing much cooler stuff than him in this video. That solo at 0:57 is like the physical manifestation of a boner's energy and everyone is talking about Paul's improv over C major (which is good but is nothing we haven't heard before).
solo c tab?
Man Paul is a monster!
4.50 "ow"
Does this guy even know who Paul is?
It's the third time I burn my guitar
God exists...
It must be a woman why would Paul leave the sun of so cal?
paul is a master class in all areas this looks boring to him
5:00 Mr. Big-ish ...
