- Carhartt started their fashion forward line a few years back, making their cuts a bit slimmer and materials higher quality. The con is that the WIP line is double the cost of ordinary Carhartt clothes. After considering several copper/tan canvas jackets by Freenote and Rogue Territory I decided to go with something a bit warmer and opted for the lined Carhartt WIP Detroit jacket . It is warm functional and about half the price as some other utility jackets on the market.
This video helped me a lot when I bought this outfit directly from overseas. Thank you👍

Thanks for explaining WIP ... I noticed the original Detroit has extra wings on the back shoulder... These are definitely more fashion forward ... 👍
I have used a lot of regular Carhartt over the years for construction work. Personally I think WIP is a huge upgrade.
Thank you for your review. I bought both a M and a L and I think I am right between the sizes. I like the fit of the M around the chest and waist but I absolutely hate it around my armpits and shouders. The jacket feels tight there I would probably be adjusting the fabric regularly.
Then again, the L is much much more comfortable, yet the jacket is HUGE. I feel like I could stick basketball between my stomach and the jacket in size L.
I've spent the last 30 min trying both jackets on and I cannot make up my mind for the life of me. Too bad, I like the jacket, the look and the price.
It's tough being in between sizes like that. I actually sold my jacket because the arms were too short by over an inch. If you look at the wide shot wearing the jacket you can see how short the arms are.
I had the fucking same experience, I'm 1.78 meter tall.
In my first attempt to the store i was in between L and Xl, but it took me 10 minutes to find out that L was my size, but through out the week i start thinking about, what if im M size after all.
All the models in the website where taller than me by 10 cm so, so i came back to the store with a hoodie to layer inside the jacket to see the diference.
At the end i took the M size just because i wanted to use it without layer it, thinking in a minimalist style. For the record I had never use an M Size before in terms of jackets or hoodies so it was hard to makeup my mind.

I have a carhartt WIP shop not far from me in London but I’ve been buying carhartt clothes for over 40 years and current have in excess of 25 different items . For me the original American carhartt workwear clothes are what carhartt is all about so for that reason I have no WIP stuff , but I do admit lots of it looks really nice but what about the price “ OUCH”
It is expensive. I'll only buy WIP on sale now. Normal Carhartt is getting expensive too.
Could u tell me any info about stores in the uk that sell American cathartt?
@@zeqiyang3750 Is regular Carhartt hard to find in the UK? In Canada and the US we have workwear stores because our construction industry is so huge. I wouldn't know what the availability is in the UK. My advice is to guess which size works for you and order it online. I think even Amazon sells regular Carhartt.
@@vancanadastyle3365 it is hard, I might see a lot in the vintage shops but not the new ones. I’ve only seen Wip in the UK so far, quite annoying as I might need to try some trousers to know my perfect size😭 But thank you very much for replying me and the friendly suggestion. I guess I will buy the American style when I travel in the states
Just got the black one and It's fantastic. Except the zipper problem lol
The zipper is a pain. Having it for a while now I don't have a problem with it anymore.
What are your measurements if you dont mind me asking? Im 5’11 205lbs. Just wondering reference.

Hey amazing video, I was wondering what about the warmth, I live in Brussels and the winters are kind of harsh here what do you think ?
It's definitely no replacement for a winter parka. In Vancouver it is around 0 degree C in winter and I wore this most of the time. I took out my parka maybe 10 times this year.

I got this as well as an RGT lined supply jacket, and Tbh they get similar amounts of wear. Only thing I prefer about this one is the beautiful canvas and how it ages.
Is your RGT jacket canvas or waxed cotton? Ive been waiting for RGT to make the canvas jacket lined and I would buy first day.

Nice review! I have a couple of questions. How's the wind resistance of the canvas material? Have you by any chance ever worn it riding a motorcycle? Thanks!
Wind resistance is good when walking around, but not sure about biking as I do not bike or motorbike. I did however wear it in winter with a henley under and it was warm enough. BTW the Detroit jacket is warmer than the vest. The blanket lining in the jacket is warmer than the thinsuate in the vest.
@@vancanadastyle3365 Thanks! I don't live in Canada anymore, so I don't need it for extremely cold weather. More like Canadian fall weather with no snow. I'm wondering if the blanket lining will be too warm for me when paired with the vest. Maybe I should get an unlined Detroit jacket together with the vest. I know I'll need the vest anyway.

@@kinslowrainer3982 I was wearing it with a henley under in 2-5 degrees C. Not quite freezing. It’s warmer than I thought it would be considering it’s not considered a winter jacket.

I bought from offthehook.ca . It was around Black Friday and unfortunately its not available on the site anymore.
Only thing I like better then the regular detroit jackets (Usa made) is the darker corduroy collar
Do the regular jackets not have the dark collar?

@@colemancalgary5260 I was surprised how much darker this jacket was then the pictures online. I guess the idea is when it wears in more it lightens up.

Yes, I have tried on a Large and for me, it fit way too baggy for me. The Medium fits perfect except the arm length. Its unfortunate as I don't feel like I have particularly long arms for my height.

@@guntarskauls8627 Yeah. From the top of my deltoid running down the outside of my arm is 24" to my wrist. So the jacket fits fine in the sleeve when I'm standing relaxed. But when I'm doing any sort of activity like driving, its way short.
@@vancanadastyle3365 Soooo, despite you and I having identical measurements I went ahead and ordered M. It comes to no surprise that I had the same sleeve length issue 😃. Ordered L and will be sending back the M. Wish me luck 🤞😄

Other than the tag it looks exactly like one I got at my local farm store for $80.00. I honestly don't see the difference.
The regular Carhartt one fits a bit looser. I would have got the regular if it wasn't as loose fitting.
@@vancanadastyle3365 I did notice the pocket lining is different and mine doesn't have waist adjusters.
Very nice jacket. My only complaint would be that the shoulders are not pleated for reaching when working. Also, the price. Seem way overpriced and more like a fashionable jacket than a work jacket.
Its definitely a fashion jacket. And overpriced.
Do you think the winter OG version is suitable for -5 degrees C to -10 degrees C?
No. Not unless you layer with a fleece.

What color is this? This suits you very well.
I’m choosing between the 3 options (winter):
1. Hamilton Brown (rigid) - I can’t see the details of the stitches on the wip website, but I like the color of the lining
2. Hamilton Brown (heavy stone wash) - I love the details of the stitches but the lining is too plain
3. OG Deep Hamilton Brown (aged canvas)
I love the color but the NOT fan of the quilted lining and the black collar
The colour they call it is just brown. They have several options to buy now. I’m not sure where you live but in Canada I have a couple places I buy WIP where it is on sale frequently.

Looks like yours is the first one. Hamilton Brown (rigid) I got mine from the US which is the OG deep hamilton and they used aged canvas (worn-in look)

Are you having problems with the zippers engaging, particularly the bottom one. I’ve owned it since 9/30/20 and the bottom zipper has been nothing but a headache.
Yes. Now that you mentioned I have been having problems with the zipper.
@@vancanadastyle3365 i got news for you, brother, that’s how it’s going to be. I almost returned it because of that problem. I literally have a “routine” for zipping/unzipping, it’s ridiculous. But I’ll be honest, it’s a good jacket, I’ve put it through hell. If anyone out there is considering this jacket, beware, the zipper is going to be frustrating. Take care and happy New Year!
Bloody hell. I have a Bartlett from their non-WIP line, and the zipper kills me. It's like the bit that goes in is tilted inwards so it doesn't catch.
@@walidkhan4411 Yeah. There is a fold of canvas that impedes the zipper from clicking on easily.
That's my pet hate. I F***ing hate the double zip system. 😡😠🤬 I think companies do it to enable wearer to partially close the jacket whilst driving or riding a horse. I don't care. I've complained about that to the Gant company here in UK. I only buy jackets with one zip. Liked the Carhatt, but now won't buy cos of the bloody zips!!!!!
The zipper is a pain! Got the xxl. Sits tight. Wish they offered larger in wip range.
I sort of fiddled around with it and with a little practice it's not that big of a bother. But they need to make their zippers better esp. with how much you pay.

Yes. This is most ideal for spring/fall.

Sorry. I didn't mention my weight and measurements in this video. But I mentioned in other videos. I am 5'10 and 165 pounds and have a size medium. Warning though. The sleeves are slightly shorter than I would like.

I think the sleeves might be too short. Best would be to find a size guide online to see what the sleeve length is. Or call a shop that has one and ask if they can tell you measurements over the phone.
I don't understand why wip is so much more expensive than regular Carhartt work clothes, they look so much nicer and more original than wip, i have sierra and detroit jackets vintage soo it’s beautiful jackets ever. I dont like WIP Detroit😕
Yeah I wouldn’t pay full price for WIP. I really like this jacket except the sleeves are too short.
Ive ordered this in medium i am a 42inch chest and wonder if it will be too tight also can someone let me know what the waist (hem) width is

@@vancanadastyle3365 Hi, the fit was tighter under the arms thsn i thought but I'm used to wearing the large J22 which is designed for layers so yes overall good fit.

Honestly I think buying a large and paying to get get it tailored to slim it down. You are taller than me and the mediums sleeves are too short.
Would this be ok for winter with a sweater?
Freezing probably not. But it’s warm. I’ve worn it in the warmer winter day with a Henley and it was just fine.

Are you skinny? or stalky? There are several factors about which size you should get. The Ssense website used to have a fit guide so maybe check there. I would take a jacket that you like the fit the most from your closet and measure it. Than compare to guides online.
@@vancanadastyle3365 I’m a skinny guy, I’m a small in the dickies Eisenhower jacket even though that’s a more boxier fit I’ll just trust go with a small, worst case scenario I’ll just go to my local tailor

I’m 5 ft 10 and this is a medium. The arms are too short but my arms are maybe a little long for someone my height.
Hem at waist looks a bit lower than the originals. The originals had a really high hem that would sit at or above your belt in normal jeans. Too bad for that.
I do like the body length and overall fit. The sleeve length is too short by over an inch. And I don’t have particularly long arms.

tough call. I would say XL maybe because the arms might be short on the L for a taller dude.
Carhartt Detroit jacket same look way lower cost.
I would have got the regular but the fit is too loose compared to WIP. If I was a bigger dude I would have just got the regular one.
can't even buy the non WIP version of this jacket anymore. they changed it.
Makes you wonder if it's a sales tactic by Carhartt to encourage people to buy the WIP version or nothing.

Made in America is always better, but does cost more. If I were to do it again I would have paid more and got a lined Rogue Territory jacket in copper canvas.
I think carhartt WIP started to produce their own collection in 1997, it's an european offshoot (they got a licence deal to sell products under the same name), the quality of the materials is also not better, often a bit thinner and the stitchings can be worse then the og workwear stuff.
I’ve bought regular Carhartt for construction. Here in Canada 🇨🇦 regular Carhartt is not the greatest quality. I’ve found WIP just a little better. Does it justify the price? If you manage to get WIP on a sale than yes. I think so.

It was smth about covid, like carhartt supported vaccine mandates or smth and thats why they're mad at them. People calling themselves proudly purebloods that will never buy carharrt again because they're against freedom and shit. For me, it's another reason I'm going to buy more carhartt

It’s ridiculous. There is a tiny flap of canvas that blocks you from cleanly zipping it up.
