The trick with the steins is to keep the global master higher than channel master volumes.
Dime the master and then bring the channel volume up for level and it really shines.

This is cool. I've got an old JCM 800 Tony modified before he got Krank amps up and running. It has the sweep control too. It can be a pain to dial in but once you get there it sounds pretty damn sweet. He described the sweep control as the Q on a parametric EQ to me.

I own a krankenstein + 120 watt head with matching cabs full stack, bought new in 2007, never has been my go to amp. but it's the heaviest and loudest amp I have ever owned. I still have it today, with original tubes, and never have had any problems, built like a tank, great review Kyle

So many of those classic Andy Sneap productions were using Krank Revolutions and Krankenstein’s. They’re very similar circuits. Killer sounding amps as long as you dial them in right.
Build quality is a little weird, they get the job done but they could have done some simple tweaks to the pcb’s that would save a lot of problems

So awesome that you made this video on a Krankenstein in 2022. I bought mine in 2005 new which I still have. I love it. You're right about spending time to dialing it in. I gigged with it using a Ibanez with a JB in the bridge through a Mesa cab with V30s. I also ran a TS9 to make it less dry. I just turned up the volume on the TS9 only. It sounded great. I'm going to have to revisit that setup again soon. I'm curious to see how it would sound with my Kiesel

Excellent vid! That TC Integrated Preamp side of the Deadweald really had that amp sounding fantastic which makes sense as those pedals tend to make the low end more percussive and this amp apparently does that well already. Speaking of which finally on the waitlist for that Deadweald Duality DX.

I ran 2 different eminence speaker set ups and both sounded absolutely killer. 1 was 2 swamp thangs and 2 texas heats in an x pattern in a Valveking 4x12 and then 2 legends and 2 texas heats in an x pattern in a randall xl 4x12. SD-1 in the front and an EQ in the loop. Thing to remember is that the sweep works with the bass and mid knobs. Once dialed in it's my absolute favorite amp that I've found to be unmatched. I’ve owned three variations of Krankenstein and this is a fair example of what to expect with it. I prefer the 50 and 20 watt Jr models as they have a little more compression and can really breath fire. The power tube volume knob isn’t really necessary for this amp and can make weird things happen on your channel volume as you turn volume up and down

The real secret to krank amps is using the recommended speaker for the amp. Play the Kstein through Texas Heats... it's easily the best sounding amp I've ever heard for metal. Play through a V30? - becomes a tighter 5150ish amp

I would really like to see a video with different speakers. When I got my krank I only bought the head. A year or so later I found a matching cab with the Texas heats and it did make a big difference. Try adding some more gain into the sound too. I found it likes to be almost at max. The sweep know was killer for me when I first got the head but it definitely takes some time to get use to how that knob effects the amp.

Top end definitely has some paper/cloth ripping quality to it here and I could definitely see where Emi speakers would help that. Still sounds pretty good though! I remember seeing this in guitar mags when I first started playing and drooling wishing I could play one. My taste in tone has swung more to the polite side so I chase more rolled-off top end now, though.

The last big head I had was a Krank Rev1+. It was pretty cool. Had the roar of a Marshall but with a lot more bottom end and less Marshall "karaaaang". I never played a Krankenstein, but I loved my Rev1...until I got Rev+ (which might be one of my favorite amps I've ever had). The Rev+ had better thiccer lows and low mids, and that overall chunk that the 1's lacked. This demo sounds pretty good overall, but definitely would give the upper hand to the Rev. Ok, a couple things, so here’s a story for ya and then some tips. I live in Phoenix where these amps were/are made. I had a revolution I was selling and a guy came to buy it that personally knew Tony. He told me the reason the krankenstien is so sharp is because when Tony was tweaking the amp to dime’s specs, dime kept sending it back saying it needed more of a certain frequency. Tony noticed every time he increased the presence dime was happier with the tone. Apparently this went back and forth a few times. Basically dime was tone deaf in a very specific frequency and kept having him increase it because he couldn’t hear it. So dimes signature tone was created by his inability to hear properly haha. I know people shit all over dime’s tone nowadays. Regardless, his tone is instantly recognizable and really what would you rather have? To sound just like everyone else or to have a unique sound that makes you distinguishable? Anyway, Tony finally got the amp to dime’s approval and was going to send out 2-4 amps but then dime got killed. Dime never got to play on the finalized version of his amps.
The master and channel volume have a dramatic impact on the amp’s sound. Running the channel volume equal to the master I’ve found equate to a better sound. But, you can really tweak the mids and treble by running them out of sync. Running the channel volume higher makes the amp thinner and scratchy. Running the master higher makes it fatter.

    • @clugokillscluco

    • @VIRAEMIAPHXAZ
      @VIRAEMIAPHXAZ 2 роки тому

@@vorpalblades I understand what you are saying. One thing to remember is that today's great tone will be tomorrows shitty tone. When Dime was playing with Pantera his tone fit for the time and there were many copy cats that loved his tone. Nobody knows what the next great tone will be but I can guarantee it will change.

If you have all your settings marked it's cool to play live with until you get in a weird sounding room and try to change your eq and then it turns into a cluster fuck. It's a cool amp and sounds great once you get it dialed in,but definitely not my number one.

Great amp demo, Kyle! I've never played the Krankenstein, but after hearing your amp demo, it's not a tone that I really liked to hear or play through. No disrespect to those who own or play that amp! I wouldn't buy the Krankenstein since it would fit for my style of playing, but kudos to those of you that can dial it in and make it work for you. I have to agree that adjusting the sweep control & amp EQ is key to getting that amp's tone dialed in.
I have a Krank 1980 Jr. 20 watt amp head that just sounds awesome for hard rock/classic metal. It's more of a hotrodded '80s Marshall amp tone with a good usable clean channel. If you can demo the Krank Nineteen80 80 watt amp along with its matching Krank 4x12 cab with Eminence Governor speakers (voiced like a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker), that would be great! I know that Frank Hannon & Dave Rude of Tesla and Michael Wilton of Queensryche were endorsing the Krank Nineteen80 amp heads for awhile in 2010 and there's a UA-cam review from Premier Guitar as well.

The low end was massive. Great mids. Now,......... the factory gain was a bit hard to dial in without the pedal. But,....it didn't take but about 10 mins of tweaking before it was ripping faces off. I will say though,...the factory voicing is more like Slayer territory instead of Dime territory. However,....with the MZ it was very convincing. Very loud. Very heavy.

This sounds totally sick. The brittle/harsh tones are still very 3D, but it's cool you can mix them out. You can mix any head, obviously - since you're a pro at tones.....but I'd go out of my way to add this to my collection. Currently, I have a 2203 from 1978 (JMP) and a USA 6505+. ROCK ON!

Yeah, you can definitely tell that this amp was meant for a cab loaded with Eminence speakers in regards to the high end. 😅 honestly though, i don't think that's too bad of a thing. I've played digital models of Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers before through a set of Eminence CV-75's and they sound absolutely crushing. The CV-75's have a lot of complex midrange frequencies going on compared to the V30, and it in turn pairs really, really nice with the scooped mids of a Mesa Boogie Rectifier amp.
I know i say this all the time, but it's always worth checking out different speakers and pairing them with the right amps, wether you do so through buying the speakers theirselves and putting them in your cab, or using an IR.

This was the quickest I got rid of an amp. Too much fiddling for a decent sound, move to a new room and start tweaking again. They sound decent, but aren't very practical for a consistent sound.

i love dime but i played this head through it’s 4x12 cab and man i couldn’t get a good sound out of that amp. it’s funny he saids the highs are too harsh. when i played it i couldn’t get any kind of good highs out of it at all. the amp was just super dark. somewhat tight but i don’t know if it was the speakers or what but no matter what i did the amp was just always dark. this review sounds way better than the one i played.
funny think with signature gear is people will have a hard time using it but the artist can walk up to it turn two knobs and be done and set sounding great.

Correct me if I'm wrong. If you know how to dial your tone and have a Boss SD2 you can get your tone out of every single tubes amp head that you can check ✔️✅ I'm not that an expert in tone as you are, but I think I will be able to gig with almost every amp I can borrow. Even a Solid State amp head. I think we're kinda obsessed with the tone and sound and what's really important is the make the audience headband or mosh. Cheers bro.🤜🏻🤛🏻

I tried to buy one at a guitar center about a decade ago. It was the only one I had seen online in years, and I haven't seen one since. It had clearly been dropped hard at some point before it got to my hands, so I wound up cancelling the order. All the transformers and tubes were sitting at a 45 degree angle, and it barely functioned. I was so bummed.
